#Nvidia recording constantly stopping to work.
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Besides one simple detail, I remember having tried it out.
shadowplay is notoriously riddled with random issues like this that are nearly impossible to troubleshoot. i would recommend giving obs another try if you want a recording/replay solution that will remain reliable.
Ah here it is, found my comment: Medal can't have Discord overlay for reports, OBS can't add chapter-marks and Camtasia sure is a decent recorder for ANYTHING but games.
Nvidia is one by few recorders who can save the last five minutes recorded with a single keyboard-shortcut just in case of trying to save a situation.
and shadowplay freezes/doesn't work reliably
you can do that with obs as well
From what I've seen, doesn't seem like it.
there is a setting called replay buffer
and you can also configure how long the replay is
and set hotkeys to start/stop buffer and also for saving replay
Start replay buffer?
having the replay buffer running is basically equivalent to having shadowplay running
But then there's a possibility to stop replay buffer as well, then it's not saving the last 2-5 (whatever) minutes, am I mistaken?
Ah, ok.
it remains running until you turn it off. you will set a different hotkey for saving the replay which will be your specified length.
So where do I change keybind to save the last few minutes of my recording?
i personally start/stop the buffer manually in obs without hotkey but you can set those in the hotkey menu
the important one is the save hotkey
the only difference with obs replay buffer vs shadowplay functionality is that you need to remember to start the buffer, but i think the reliability is worth the tradeoff.
in output settings you can control how long the replay is
at the bottom of output settings
So something strange happens in the recording, I press to start the buffer AFTER the strange thing happens and then I choose to save it?
no you want to start the buffer when you start playing a game. leave it running. then if you want to clip a replay you would use the hotkey to save.
So OBS records twice at the same time then I simply make one of them stop and start it over in case of future clips?
Ah no wait.
sort of yes, but the buffer is using ram and constantly recording however long your replay is set for and dumping. exactly what shadowplay is doing.
so it's like a sliding window kind of. i'm explaining that kind of poorly.
It continues to record, I simply press "save replay" and not "stop buffer" to save the last few minutes?
correct
Then once I am done playing in general THEN I press stop buffer.
... Then what's the difference between start recording and start buffer? 🤨
recording is saving the entire recording
from the moment you start to the moment you click stop and then it saves the entire thing on your drive.
buffer only saves to your drive when you click save or use the save hotkey and it only saves the amount of time you specify for your replay.
i personally do one minute
And there's no way to save buffer even though I simply start recording? No way to save a buffer/1-2 minutes to a new clip while I am still recording the entire thing?
you can run both at the same time if you want. saved replay will be a separate file from the entire recording.
So I need to start/stop both recording and replay buffer upon starting and stopping to play?
if you want to have a recording of your entire game session as well as replays yes. if you just want replay clips you do not need to start recording. for that you only need to run the buffer.
And yay... Both both buffer and recording can't have the same key-shortcut as well... OBS sure likes doing things complicated. 😐
An other thing comes to OBS that I find useful and bam! I press my entire keyboard to check/start/stop/mark/whatever. 😒
I suppose three minutes on the buffer is what I have to start with.
What do you btw mean by using ram? And having started the buffer I get no icon anywhere about it actually having started, how do I know?
worth the tradeoff for better customized experience and reliability in my opinion
if it's running it will be blue like this
and by using ram i mean that it's not saving it on your drive. it's using ram to have a running capture of your last three minutes, or whatever time you set, and then if you click save it goes to your drive.
No idea as to why but apparently I can't take screenshots on OBS, replay buffer doesn't show up.
do you maybe have an older version?
Where do I update in that case?
OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Stream to Twitch, YouTube and many other providers or record your own videos with high quality H264 / AAC encoding.
Nevermind found it.
then i recommend checking out this link
Thanks to the hard work of volunteers on OBS Studio, it now includes the powerful functionality of scripting. More on that here.
This has enabled a very cool feature: Instant Replays.
This guide will go over how to setup an instant replays It...
No updates are currently available.
settings > output > under recording section click the checkbox to enable replay buffer
forgot that this is not enabled by default
Oh! The list tells me to add a keybind to the "save buffer" as well, perhaps that's what I am missing... ... ... Nope nevermind, there is no "save buffer" button here to keybind anyway.
Screw this! Going to the OBS server to hunt this issue down.
scroll down further
there is a section to save buffer
and it is the only thing in that section
in output settings have you set a save path and replay buffer settings yet and also enabled buffer?
Yeah the output folder was already fixed and... Enabled buffer? ... Isn't it already enabled??? ... Checks the settings category. NOPE! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Enabled it and now all seems to work. 🤣 🤣
nice
Well then, last case missing on my part then. Where do I modify how long I save?
i do understand that it's a little bit of a pain to set up over shadowplay but it will work much better
in output settings at the bottom there is a replay buffer section where you can modify the length of the replay
Ah, twenty seconds being the original. So 600 seconds in order to have ten minutes?
exactly
just keep in mind the longer it is the more ram it will need
but it still won't be a huge amount of ram unless it's long replays with high bitrate video
Alrighty, and OBS seems to have that red dot above it's icon whenever I record with the buffer as well. Thank you so much for your time and help. 😄 I really you one.
And well ofc, the longer a video is, the heavier. But upon finishing the recording (and if I happen to remove the video afterwards) then all of the ram will return right?
yes
Alrighty, then again thank you for everything. 😁 Hopefully that will be all for my part.
and no problem. i was excited to be able to ditch shadowplay previously because i was having similar issues with it, so i'm happy to spread the word.
Just today I realize something regarding OBS that might now throw it, but certainly came close to.
Medal can't record Discord overlay, Shadowplay constantly crashing and this time OBS seems to limit the strength of my microphone, I tried to increase the strength but then it just went in to the red, making the OBS-microphone unstable going from decent quality to bad, from bad to decent and so on 24/7.
I try to ask about it in OBS's Discord server but no matter the case I can't get a simple or proper answer. 💀
