#

hi, so my 3060 ti is underperforming and i feel like ive tried and looked everywhere but i cannot seem to figure out why i have this issue can somebody pls help me.

bleak zephyr
#

whenever anyone has time, could they pls help me

iron ginkgo
#

In where?

bleak zephyr
#

oh hi, sorry what do u mean by in where?

#

i just wanna figure out why my gpu is underperforming

iron ginkgo
#

In what game?

bleak zephyr
#

oh okay well for example sons of the forest

iron ginkgo
#

CPU?

bleak zephyr
#

i wanna show u an example can i send a quick yt link with a time stamp?

bleak zephyr
# iron ginkgo CPU?

my 3060 ti is combined with my intle i5-11600kf, that shouldnt be an issue right?

#

cuz i dont think im cpu bound

iron ginkgo
#

Not a problem. You're talking about a new game, though. Some weirdness may be to be expected.

#

RAM config?

bleak zephyr
#

idk if im allowed to send links in here

iron ginkgo
#

You could try that, yeah. Or you can simply press ALT-R and tell me the numbers it's spitting while at a problem spot

#

That key combo should bring up the GeForce Experience performance oveerlay

bleak zephyr
# iron ginkgo You could try that, yeah. Or you can simply press ALT-R and tell me the numbers ...

Sons of the Forest running on the RTX 3060Ti at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. I tested the ultra settings with and without DLSS!

#

at that time stamp hes using 1080 ultra settings + dlss on quality, he keeps hovering around 90 fps but if i do the same i hover around maybe 65

iron ginkgo
#

OK. At the part you want to check, bring up the performanxe overlay.

bleak zephyr
#

and i even tried the same location on the map so it cant be caused by gpu intensive areas

iron ginkgo
#

What's the FPS and GPU usage?

bleak zephyr
#

im confused perhaps u meant alt-z? cuz alt-r isnt giving me anything

iron ginkgo
#

Press ALT-Z to bring up the main overlay. If it does not react, is GeForce Experience installed and logged in?

bleak zephyr
#

no no i can bring up the main overlay and then press performance if thats what you are talking abt

iron ginkgo
#

That works too. Make sure the performance overlay is in advanced mode.

#

The numbers I want:

FPS
CPU usage
GPU usage
GPU temperature
GPU clock

bleak zephyr
#

in game im guessing?

iron ginkgo
#

Yes

bleak zephyr
#

gotchu 1 sec

iron ginkgo
#

The numbers are meaningless otherwise.

bleak zephyr
#

quick question where do i switch it to advanced mode

#

nvm i got it

#

the fps during this screenshot was hovering between 69 and 71

iron ginkgo
#

What's your monitor's display refresh rate, and is it VRR? (G-Sync, FreeSync, VESA Adaptive Sync)

#

58% total usage is pretty high btw considering a hyperthreaded hexacore

#

Something is preventing the game from running faster than your GPU actually allows. Which means either vsync, frame limits, or CPU

#

New games are pretty harsh on the CPU.

bleak zephyr
#

its a 1080p 60hz monitor but could be set to 75hz (dont know what thats abt since its a 60hz but alr) i believe its g-sync or freesync but im not sure i could try to find the monitor and check its specs again

iron ginkgo
#

Game might be not running any faster than around 70Hz then if vsync is on. (Check your monitor specs.)

bleak zephyr
bleak zephyr
#

well, before i checked the specs i went and checked in the monitor menu and freesync is turned on idk if that helps u

bleak zephyr
south crow
#

Turn off freesync

bleak zephyr
#

alright

#

is that the issue?

south crow
#

Could be limiting your FPS

#

Test without and go from there

#

Usually freesync doesn't auto lock the FPS

bleak zephyr
#

alright turned it off let me test it

#

unfortunately no changed, same fps results

south crow
#

Ok, wait for mymhilda, he'll help you

bleak zephyr
#

alright

iron ginkgo
#

Turn off freesync in monitor, gsync in nvidia control panel, and check game settings if vsync or frame limits were on

#

Also

#

It's unlikely you're acrually freesyncing

#

Cause HDMI 1.4

#

Your monitor is likely behaving like a normal 1080p60 monitor

bleak zephyr
#

im in the nvidia control panel rn, where can i find gsync?

south crow
#

If you set freesync off then you won't have it

bleak zephyr
#

i did turn off freesync on my monitor

south crow
#

I mean you won't have the option in nvcp

#

Check max frame rate lock and vsync in nvidia control panel

bleak zephyr
#

i dont use the manage 3d settings so i dont have a max frame rate turned on there

south crow
#

Ok, what about in game?

#

Check framerate lock or vsync if there's any of the two

bleak zephyr
#

same thing in game, v-sync disabled and fps cap unlimited

south crow
#

Also adaptive target, something like that if there's that option

#

When you look at the sky, what's your fps?

bleak zephyr
#

90

#

between 85 and 90

south crow
#

Ok so it isn't locked

bleak zephyr
#

yeh its not

south crow
#

I can honestly think it's just the game

#

It has just launched

bleak zephyr
south crow
#

Try fullscreen instead of windowrd

bleak zephyr
#

i did, if i use exclusive full screen i get -10 fps

south crow
#

You have any issues in other games?

#

I'm certain it is the game

bleak zephyr
#

miles morales is one of them, same thing i look at a bunch of videos with people using the same gpu but getting way more fps

south crow
#

What about your temperatures of cpu and gpu?

#

Ram speed same as the youtube videos?

bleak zephyr
south crow
#

Could vary from system to system, same for glitches and other stuff

#

But answer the above questions

bleak zephyr
#

and these are from the yt vid

south crow
#

You have a lot of games installed that you play?

bleak zephyr
#

yeh but all of them on installed on my hhd, this game specifically is installed on my ssd since they said it will run better

#

other then this game, no other games are installed on my ssd

south crow
#

Ok

bleak zephyr
#

my ssd has abt 850 out of 1tb of storage left so idk think that could be the problem

south crow
#

Can you head to localappdata and go to nvidia then dxcache and tell me how many gigabytes does dxcache take

bleak zephyr
#

sure one sec

south crow
#

And what about your ram, is it the same speed as the one on the yt video?

bleak zephyr
#

yes it is i checked yesterday and got the same result

#

i dont rlly know what to do here

south crow
#

Roght click on dxcache and go to properties

#

It'll say how much space it takes

bleak zephyr
#

there u go

south crow
#

Ok

#

You could try setting your cache folder to a bigger size in nvidia control panel as I have no idea how big cache is at default

#

Set shader cache size to 1 gb

#

And test the game, if it is the same you can either keep it or set it back to default, however you prefer

bleak zephyr
#

sure, im in the nvcp rn but idk where to change that

south crow
#

Manage 3d settings

#

And find shader cache size

bleak zephyr
#

sure let me switch to the manage 3d settings

south crow
#

Also can you go to device manager and go view resources by connection and expand interrupt request (irq) then find you GPU and screenshot

#

It'll be at the bottom I believe

bleak zephyr
#

just tested the game, no difference yet, ill go check device manager now

#

cant seem to find the irq

south crow
#

Click view at the top

#

Then resources by connection

#

Then you'll have it

bleak zephyr
#

mah bad i clicked devices by connection

south crow
#

No worrie

bleak zephyr
#

there it is

south crow
#

It's fine

#

Honestly I can only suggest reying turning off core isolation in windows security, if you have virtualization enabled

#

And trying turning off tpm in BIOS

#

Also if none make any difference reset them back to the previous state they were on

bleak zephyr
#

ur convincing me that i know nothing of pc's anymore hahaha yeh sorry i dont rlly know aht those things are or where to find them

south crow
#

You can type core isolation in windows search, it should pop up

bleak zephyr
south crow
#

It's already off

bleak zephyr
#

yup

south crow
#

Try TPM off then

#

It's somewhere in BIOS

bleak zephyr
#

alright let turn of my pc and destroy my delete button

south crow
#

If you don't notice any improvements turn tpm back ON

bleak zephyr
#

whhats tpm?

#

cuz idk where to find it and idk if you use the msi bios but idk where im gonna find that

south crow
#

It's an module that is one of the requirements for windows 11 and some games with anti cheats

#

Was known to cause issues with performance but mostly on amd systems

#

Worth giving a try even tho you have intel

bleak zephyr
#

i’m in

south crow
#

Wait

bleak zephyr
#

sure np

south crow
#

I must find how it goes in msi bios

bleak zephyr
#

alright take ur time

south crow
#

Is there setting sbuttin anywhere xd?

#

Or advanced mode

bleak zephyr
# bleak zephyr

haha i’m still on this screen i any settings button or advanced, anywhere i could click on to see one of those?

south crow
#

I'll try and find a video as I'm not sur emyself ahahhahaha

bleak zephyr
#

haha totally fine

south crow
#

Oh click advanced button on top of the window

#

Or F7

bleak zephyr
#

oh, i’m blind

south crow
#

Hahahhaha

bleak zephyr
#

bingo

south crow
#

Now click settings

bleak zephyr
#

done

iron ginkgo
south crow
#

Security

iron ginkgo
#

did you forget xmp?

#

click xmp profile 1

bleak zephyr
#

what do u mean, something wrong with my ram?

south crow
#

Oh damn didn't even see that

iron ginkgo
#

very yes

#

2133mhz is basically safety speed

bleak zephyr
#

oh alright

south crow
#

Don't touch tpm, most likely the ram xmp

iron ginkgo
#

bruh indeed

#

you were running ram at 2133 all this time

bleak zephyr
iron ginkgo
#

enjoy the free upgrade!

bleak zephyr
#

how abt now

iron ginkgo
#

yeah, now save and restart. (doublec heck the speed in bios after restarting)

bleak zephyr
#

was the esc button safe button?

iron ginkgo
#

yeah, press Esc and it should start asking what you wanna do.

#

or click the x at the top right corner

south crow
bleak zephyr
#

alr safed it, now just restart and go back to the bios?

iron ginkgo
#

settings need to be saved

south crow
#

Ah my bad

iron ginkgo
bleak zephyr
#

alright one second

south crow
#

It's fine now

#

Test the game

bleak zephyr
#

alright

south crow
#

You can also revert shader cache size to driver default if you wish

bleak zephyr
#

oh

#

my

#

lord

#

u guys are LITERALLY

#

life savers dude

#

running in the exact same areas rn but with a 20 fps boost

south crow
#

Excellent

bleak zephyr
#

perfectly matching the video

south crow
#

Well if mymhilda hasn't been watching we'd miss the xmp ahahahhahaha

bleak zephyr
#

haha true but ur the reason we went into the bios

south crow
#

Glad you got it sorted out!

bleak zephyr
#

otherwise i wouldve never sent the escreenshot showing the xmp

#

thank u guys so much seriously

south crow
#

😀

#

Also if you get more CPU usage then in videos, nvidia container will use 20 percent as it is a new issue with latest drivers. Just in case you notice that

bleak zephyr
#

oh yeh sure ill keep an eye on that thanks

#

i did turn off freesync on all 3 of my monitors, any reason i should turn it back on?

south crow
#

If you plan on using it then you can turn it back on, but you'll have to stay below your refresh rate for it to work

#

I'm not sure if it works on hdmi 1.4 on nvidia card

#

It'll sync refresh rate with your fps and get rid of screen tearing

bleak zephyr
#

never even used it before i always stuck to using v-sync or normale frame rate cap

#

idek how to use it its never in any games graphic or display settings but i always had it on

south crow
#

Freesync is that but causes lower input delay than vsync

#

Turn it on inside monitor osd and check if you have gsync option in nvidia control panel

bleak zephyr
#

sounds perfect cuz i have indeed noticed significant input delay with v-sync

#

gotchu

south crow
#

If you don't then it doesn't work over hdmi

#

I'll respond later, I'll have to go now

bleak zephyr
#

well, funny thing, i use a converter cable from display port to hdmi

#

idk if that helps

south crow
#

I'm not sure if it'll work as I neve rused converters

#

You could try. Reason? No dp port on monitor?

bleak zephyr
#

yeh well its okay ill look into it later im just happy im hitting 90 to a 100 fps in sotf now

south crow
#

Ok 👍

bleak zephyr
#

thanmks again man

iron ginkgo
#

freesync doesn't work over hdmi 1.4

#

if nvidia gpu

#

if the monitor does not have a displayport connection, it basically is a normal monitor

bleak zephyr
#

alright, i dont rlly plan on using freesync, any reason i should replace my monitor?

#

do i need like a better one?

iron ginkgo
#

a VRR monitor with displayport and at least a 120hz refresh rate can help with both motion clarity at high fps, smoothness at low fps, and eliminates tearing thoroughout

#

note: the freesync range should be something akin to 48-120 at a minimum. a good rule of thumb that the display isn't terrible at VRR is that it:

  • has g-sync compatible certification OR
  • has freesync premium certification OR
  • the display's maximum refresh rate when VRR is turned on is at least 2.5x of the minimum (e.g. 48Hz-120Hz, where 120Hz is 2.5x 48Hz) (if the monitor's minimum is 60, the upper bound should be 150.) (this ensures that the monitor can do LFC in all situations)
south crow
#

Also keep in mind that most VA panels flicker brightness with freesync
