#PC not staying on
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
djx, what are your PC's specs?
What model motherboard? Possibly faulty ram or not properly seated. Agreed with TLG though. Need full specs
what is the xmp profile on your RAM?
I have no clue what that is
the speed of the ram you have
ok
I just know GPU and CPU
Was it working when you got it? No DRAM light?
the light indicates you're getting a no post at the dram stage
There is 4 lights there
when the board does its checks
Maybe something got loose… did you happen to do any BIOS update?
turn off the PC
And turned back on again
Also no power to keyboard
And it keeps shutting off and back on
turn off the pc
Understand the symptoms.. TLG and I are trying to determine what happened or what you’d need to do
No update and PC hasn’t moved in a month
I don’t even open the glass sliding door
once you've turned off the pc
Oh ok
You won’t me to flip power switch off after pushing down power button
you can do that yes
Yeah hold power down until it stops booting then switch
ok, uninstall your RAM
each RAM stick is held in by two tabs
There are little latches on either side of a ram stick, you’ll push away from the ram to unlock then open
I don’t even know what a Ram stick is man
I know it’s embarrassing
No one ever showed me this stuff
The things that say GSkill on it
those 4 things that say g skill on them
Hahahahahs
Out
Don’t know why your laughing at me
you push the tabs in and you'll be able to gently slide the sticks out
Am laughing cause I was just like you
concentrate bruh
Get out of this thread boy
I know there's an Adderall shortage, but I need you to stay with me here
Gotta move surge protector so I can open the door
One moment
Push in the tabs
And the stick will just fall out
Nah, it’ll pop out slightly then you can pull it out the rest of the way gently
If you are a new pc builder and want to make sure if you place the ram sticks correctly then you came to the right place. Watch the video for more information!

if you need a video
Ok one second
Yeah maybe check the video first
Yea tried pushing them in and they don’t budge
And don’t want to snap the plastic
Check the vid
the video will show you how to release the RAM
the tabs should slide back to unlock the RAM
on some boards only the top tab is able to move
When pulling out the Ram, can I grab it anywhere
Not a lot of room to get a grip
After pushing the tabs
Anywhere yeah. Just don’t touch the contacts at the bottom
One of your tabs, you’d push on the ribbed part
once you have them out, let us know
You’re so hot
Is that black trident thing coming off too
Yep
yeah that whole piece will slide out
All part of the ram stick
do them one at a time
yes
On each end
and just wiggle them
Yup
Should I put these on towel
you're gonna remove all 4, but you're gonna do it one at a time
Desk is little dusty
On the table is fine
that's fine
Yeah
Reason I said not to touch the contacts at the bottom is that’s where it touches the motherboard. You can clean those contacts if you touch accidentally but easier to just not touch
I remember removing my first RAM stick.. was super nervous but everything turned out well. You’ll be a pro in no time
you never forget your first time
I touched the part that looks like a wrench
Ok hold up
Where you’re holding is fine, the contacts are the little gold bits.
awesome
@vapid raft you just want him to reseat the sticks?
the ram sticks will only go in the same way you removed them
so line it up like your previous pic
How many possibilities could it possibly be
Thanks so much man
I can’t thank you enough for wasting more time helping people with there computers
it's possible it was the RAM settings, but booting in with a single stick should reset the memory
Worst case you’d need to buy new ram, okay case is you’d be short a stick or two (that may be faulty), best case or most likely is what TLG said. Possibly just ram settings
Does it matter if they go in the same slot
you can use whatever slot you want
What slot do I fill first
Find a slot 0
Ok one sec
Well, that’s my preference.. but anywhere works
whatever slot is physically easier for you to install it in, knowing you will still need to fill the other slots eventually
we are just trying to get you to boot, performance doesn't matter at this stage
Yeah true
and we can also use this as an opportunity to rule out a bad stick of memory
or a bad channel
hopefully it was just the board trying to train the memory to a setting it was having trouble with
Does that writing next to the slots mean anything
Just put it in the left most slot
I will say that my PC froze last week while streaming and the only way to unfreeze it was to restart with power button
A1 and B1 are the slots you'd want to use if you only had 2 sticks, but you have 4 so you'll be fine
Lol why does it say first for 2
Second from left slot
The one all the way to the left
Meuwn, I gotta shower bruh, can you help him make sure it loads with a single stick and then add multiple sticks without xmp to see if it will boot?
Yeah
Ideally just put it in the second from left slot. We didn’t see the diagram to the left of the slots
If you push it in gently all the way the tabs will snap up to lock it in place
Just make sure you’re lining it up right, there’s a key
See how the side with the contacts has a notch in it?
Like more push than a click/snap
I think I’m doing it wrong
Why
Do i have to gently push the Ram in the slot
GSkill text should be at the bottom, right?
The tabs don’t close automatically
Yes
But I don’t want to put too much force on the Ram stick
Okay so you have it in the right orientation
I don’t know if I am supposed to balance the stick while closing the tabs
you can push one end in at a time
If you can’t pull up the tabs to close them on the sticks you might have to push harder
i usually lock the bottom in place first then the top
I close the bottom tab but the stick slides out the bottom still
They don’t close on there own. I have to force them down
When the stick is all the way in the tab should close. If you have to close it on it’s own, fine but it should be locked in place then
Shouldn’t be able to fall out
I close the tabs but the stick slides right out
open the tabs
I don’t want to push the Ram too far in
you should not be closing them yourself
when you push the ram in, the tab will lock it in
on it's own
Leave the tabs open and then push in farther
You’ll hear a click when the tab closes on one side
Ok yeah top one closed on it own
Now push the bottom in
Nice
sometimes it needs a bit of oomph
TLG are you wet and naked right now giving tech support
not yet
Both tabs locked?
Think TLG wants you to just boot with one
Fussy thing
good
half the problem is solved
it just means you didn't put the stick in the ideal place for a single stick of RAM, it's not gonna matter
Just saying that we didn’t put the ram stick in the optimized slots. It’s fine for what we did
Shut down through windows
And do another stick
Then flip the switch, then yes another stick
For what it’s worth…the monitor went from having no signal to having signal
But I also have my LG HDR monitor plugged into
But PC is shutting down now
Want me to turn my other monitor off
Or unplug it
Nah
Ok
The issue is strictly with the ram
Ok second stick right next to it
Uhh..
Can I use paper towel to gently wipe the contact off
Give it a space in between
It’s fine, I wouldn’t wipe it
Paper towel might scratch or leave particles
Oh ok
Yeah ideally we would’ve put in the slots that will be empty
Ok
But this is fine for this test
Ok
Booting up
My keyboard doesn’t have power for whatever reason and PC is on
But nothing
Booting up
No screen
Second stick is all the way in?
Yea it clicked
Exactly
Shut it back down
Flip the switch again. Then I want you to remove the first stick and move it to the slot to the right of it. Then remove the second stick. Keep that second stick handy so we can use it next test.
I’m wanting to check the other channels first and use the slots the motherboard wants us to use
we need to determine if the stick is faulty or if the slot is faulty
Ok
actually showering now
LMAO
I’m just gonna have him check the other slots first unless you wanna go about it differently, TLG
Boot it up
Where is the ram now? Original stick on the second from left slot?
Send a pic of the ram slots
Booted up
Please
The second stick I put in I have set aside
So only stick in now is the first stick we put in in slot two
Second from left
Okay
Shut it down again
Meauwn is gonna help you figure that out
(really showering now)
Thanks for helping man
Not sure just yet. Hopefully just another stick of ram. Honestly if a slot for the ram is bad I’d just go dual channel and not fill all 4 slots
Instead of replacing the mobo
I have just 2 16GB sticks
Initially I was gonna do that but when I bought these sticks they didn’t have the 16 Gb sticks available
So I got 4 8’s instead
Ah gotcha
So what to do now
Now try that second stick we used again… on the slot all the way to the right
After you shut down and all that
Try booting again
Same original issue
Okay, shut down again. Try a different stick
Take out one of the sticks
Err.. shut down. Remove the stick you just put in.
Put a different stick in that same slot
Okay then you know those two sticks in are good and same for the slots 1,2,4
Wait is that pic from the most recent test or what
Yes
The dram light is on and it’s booting like normal?
Okay now.. this will sound really dumb but to save some time put the last stick of ram in the slot between
Ahh between the other two sticks
Im not 100% on this but I think it would still boot just not be optimized if that stick is good
Plus side is we know 2 sticks are good right now
I can’t see
Open your eyes. Jk
If I get the top part in, does that mean bottom will be in
Or can it still go in awkward
Yeah
Probably not
Sorry should’ve said to shut down. Always best practice to shut down before doing anything in there
Had to take out the right one
To get the other in
And gonna insert it back in
Ok all 3 in
Boot up
Light was on but it powered on like normal
Ok I think it’s working
Yup booting up like normal
Okay
So bad stick of Ram
Then you have your answer, one bad stick of ram
Shut down, flip switch. Put the stick in the middle all the way to the left
That’s the best orientation for that ram.. I think? Honestly I’d just get by with 2 for now. Not sure if the 3rd stick in that slot by itself is better than not having it, TLG would know
Can I still do my normal gaming and streaming with 16 GB Ram
So I don’t think they sell quad channel ram as individual sticks, I could be wrong. Might have to just go with those three or rebuy a quad package or dual channel. Since you stream idk what the recommendations are for ram
Should work with 16, can try it
Damn that sucks
A dual channel one is probably cheaper
But less performance
But if TLG says the 3rd stick in is fine, I’d just go with 24gb ram
Not by much
So you should have 1 in left most, another in 2nd from left, and one in right most
So 3rd slot will be empty
Yea
Ok great
Boot up
Yeah you should be able to run it
Yea it turns on
So this 4th stick is trash
That screen that talks about Ram being not optimized didn’t show up
Yep. Can drop it off at a Best Buy or microcenter to recycle
Oh ok
Yep, becauze it wants you to use the 2nd and 4th slot
One second gonna make a phone call
I have a lifetime warranty on this PC but gonna see if the company that built it for me can send me a stick or something
But I’ll brb
Oh nice 👍
Can’t thank you enough
No problem dude
I truly appreciate you taking the time to help me out and for TLG
Hope the warranty works out
Yeah I’ll ping him here
It won’t be ruined by using the 3rd slot. Might just be more or less performant by using it or not
More ram but at the sacrifice of less performance is what I’m wondering
Can I ask in general chat about the streaming
@vapid raft one bad ram stick. All slots work. Does it matter if he uses the third stick that works? Wondering if it would be more detrimental to use it
About the Ram
I googled it, said 16 or 32 is fine
Might be better with 32 but should still work with 16
If I can’t find a single quad stick
If it’s not good to use it as a third stick, I would keep it as a spare 🙂
Anti static bag or just leave in a small box or something
Ok thanks again for your help
Not like a grocery store bag, but like the ones you get with pc parts
Check warranty first. If that doesn’t work out, look at dual or quad channel ram based on best cost. Idk if this is a good article to pick new ram but I found this https://levvvel.com/best-ram-for-i9-10900k/
When they built the PC, they said they optimized the Ram
Does that mean I have to reoptimize everything again
I am relieved but just seems like more stressful
Just don’t know what to do right now
They probably meant they turned on XMP setting in the bios for the motherboard
I don’t want to get new RAM and it not run good or get the wrong type
I don’t know what that is man
Unless you update the bios you won’t need to mess with that
I just want to have a good running PC. I don’t get to play that often
Because of work
Just stressed out but thanks for your help man
I don’t know what to do right now
XMP is basically just a saved overclock profile for the RAM
Contact the seller about the warranty first. See if they can replace the stick
Oh ok
If not then you pick out new ram maybe from that site I listed (or someone more knowledged can recommend a set that’s good for your CPU). Once you install those you can worry about XMP
It shouldn't matter, I assume he's gonna get a replacement or RMA it if the RAM is in warranty
Yeah if it’s in warranty this should definitely be covered
Nice
On phone now
EZPZ
They are transferring me to tech support
I gotta run some errands
Thanks again
Good luck!
So can I leave that third stick in
Yup
12,4 yes
Thanks again @mighty orchid @final laurel and @vapid raft for everything man. Really helped me not stress out
So when third comes in, do I just pop it in
Do I have to do anything on the computer
Like anything special
Yup, just shut it down. Flip the switch. Pop it in
Probably not, unless their tech support tells you
Oh ok…thanks again man. I really am glad to be a part of this server. Sounds selfish but really I appreciate it
That XMP stuff is set in the bios (what tells the motherboard to do it’s thing).. unless you had to replace the motherboard or do a bios update it should still be set at whatever is ideal
