Alright. Let it rip.
This is pretty bad. Restart your PC again, and now, try the 3D Standard test. (This is the one for video cards.)
Set the usage limit to a very low value like 5% first.
Yep
Then let it rip
What's the GPU power?
where do i check
Click Power here
Yep
it just hit
44
then 50
...
it spikes up randomly
wen i go on discord
then goes back down to 23-30
@devout seal
Your PSU sagged to 11.695V
OK, 5% test is done.
Now...
Stop the test, and restart it with usage set to 10%.
alr
Let me know the wattage and voltage you're getting.
running
lowest 1.7
both ss's
still has the random spikes to 60
@devout seal
are they good?
OK. Now increase it to 15%
We keep increasing this until the computer stops working, or it hits 100%
Alr
Each time, we check the voltage and power usage
This is normal. Limiting algorithms don't kick in early on
For 15% right?
yep
Yeah, til the computer shuts down, a voltage goes below 11.4V, or you hit 100%
Still good so far. Now try 50%.
60%
Now what
Go back and attempt a CPU test, but use the default settings:
Data set Large
Mode Normal
Load type Variable
Change the test duration to 60m
done
OK. Start the test. If it doesn't shut down, let it hold for an hour
If it does, culprit is very likely the motherboard
Since CPUs usually don't just die
still no shut down
I'm thinking of this being the proable cause now.
The motherboard is unable to supply enough power to the CPU when the CPU requests a large amount of power and causes the entire computer to shut down.
You're already using 113W on a "normal" load.
so its the power supply?
No, the motherboard
Oh
Thr voltages check out on your PSU even when loaded down with 200W on the GPU
While we're at it
Since you wanted to confirm stuff
so the psu is fine ??
Can you check if the GPU voltage is near 12V rn?
Don't stop the test.
OK, I think I can tell you to try another AM4 motherboard that isn't barebones
Make sure you can return it in case the faults still happen
ye i can
Which then rules out the motherboard.
So should i just buy a psu and motherboard?
OK. Keep us updated on if the CPU dies on the new motherboard too
The PSU you probably can wait for now
i mean i can always return it
Since it can power a GPU at full tilt fine
So I'm thinking it's not the PSU sagging too low.
il just order both
are they hard to put in and shit?
ive only done ram cpu and gpu
are these solid?
Replacing the motherboard will require you to remove basically everything that isn't storage or fans or psu
Replacing the PSU will depend on how accessible your case is right now. (You can always remove the motherboard first.)
This board shouldn't need it - it's made for 5000 series cpus
is this one fine
also do i stop the test
it dropped down to 60
i didnt stop it yet
Leave it running
OK. I think your CPU is probably fine if it ends after 1 hour without errors
Make sure your new board can fit in your current case btw
alright
how do i check
so how forsure are u that its the motherboard and not psu?
@devout seal
Well, CPUs running a power virus is likely still lower wattage than the 3060 ti's 200W
And we know the CPU's perfectly fine when it'd doing normal stuff
I'd still suspect the PSU tbh
If neither a new board or psu help the last thing I'd check is a new CPU
But you do already have 2 CPUs and both fail, right
the old one js made my pc turn off
unless i go in bios like this one
Hmm. I guess we can only hope that replacing both mb and psu stops the shutdowns...
Yeah i guess
OK. For now probably just test with the new motherboard and psu. If it goes away then it's one of these two at fault
and if it dont
Make sure to also test the previous CPU. We already know most of the rest of your system is fine
It was apparently able to handle a 3900x that was being overclocked
Honestly you'd probably want something with a better VRM
Do you need wifi built-in?
na
Then get the b550 tomahawk
Yeah, you just gotta do the BIOS update before you put the CPU in
so this one isnt good?
Nah, it has a BIOS flash feature
It's an ATX motherboard
is it?
What case do you have?
i got some
prebuilt
cyberpower
small ass case
u tell me if itll fit 😂
It should
Yeah
the images just look bigger
You have standoffs to the right
Those are for a bigger board
You have the rear fan exhausting and the fan on the CPU cooler also exhausting towards the back of the case right?
You'll also be able to do some cool stuff with your 5900x with the new board
But yeah, before you install it, download the latest BIOS version for the board and follow the directions for BIOS flash
You need to name the file a certain name and place it in a USB
Then insert the USB into the USB slot that is specific to BIOS flash (should be colored or marked), then follow the instructions on hooking up power (you shouldn't need everything installed or plugged in yet). Then you power up the board, press the flash button with the USB connected and wait for it to flash that it's completed the update
The directions will go into more detail
link a video?
or is the directions gonna js tell me
yea

@vast mirage just to clarify it will run the ryzen 9 5900X right?
Tomahawk will run a 5950x bruh
Alright tysm
#1079584759056978020 message
whats that mean
@vast mirage
yooyoyoyoyo
i need u rn
my power supply that i ordered isnt compatible i think
Can't fit?
I hope your not trying to reuse cables from the old PSU
it's a standard PSU. Just make sure you use the cables that came with it
i am…
im using the ones that came with it
lol
im getting no sign of life
on mobo or psu
did you connect front panel connectors?
im pretty sure
Use a screwdriver to contact the two POWER SW pins
wym?
Not on a desk
You don't have the CPU in
And the CPU is mia
Do you actually need to update the BIOS?

yeah
99% chance not necessaey
A B550 board should already have BIOS support for 5000x CPUs
it aint compatible
If your box says 5000 series ready
Unless it's old stock from years ago
Never follow random youtube guides
Ah, old new stock?
i got a ryzen 9 5900x
you also have no RAM in
OK, to make sure you are flashbacking correctly... drive is fat32 and 32gb or less?
why are these 2 different shapes lol
yes
i cant even get the psu on dude
They look the same shape to me, you just have the cable upside down
your connector is upside down
Clip to clip
ik?
The clip is "up" so to speak
it aint the same shape
You gotta visually flip it
it really is
Cause it's getting inserted
100% it is the same shape
ma g
That's a different cable ......
Plugs inserted to hole
its the same one???
are you ok
I think this may be a big problem
No it's not lmao
Connector misidentifying
Yeah that will fit
When you are inserting the cable.
Yes it is
Your plug will be FLIPPED HORIZONTALLY
holy shit dude
Thr "flipped horizontally" is key
You're looking at it backwards
See that cable?
Round Square Square Round Round on first row.
Flipped, it's
Round Round Square Square Round
oh i see
ok both are plugged into psu
OK now try doing the bios flash again
i cant even get the psu on?
did you watch the video?
yes
just press the button for 2 seconds using a screwdriver
You need a case's front panels, or a screwdriver to short POWER SW
WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN
im sorry im new dude
That's what turns the PSU on
This is normal
And please insert this to the motherboard too. Otherwise it ain't getting power
done
You should also insert the CPU (EPS) power cable too
make sure PSU switch is ON
it is
Yeah
then hit the bios flash button for a couple seconds
on is the line
Uh
hit the switch
It's hard off
The "I" should be pressed yeah.
You forgot to switch on the PSU
It's at the "off" position
...
Yeah, you forgor
oh
Press down on the "I"
I feel your pain. Thank you for your service
now press the bios flash button for 2 seconds
It's just the fact they've said they've watched the video, but done nothing from the video
good
The fans on a lot of PSU's don't turn on until they get hot, just fyi
Yeah it might not stay on, don't use that as a reference
the motherboard is on and flashing thats good?
They only function when the power supply gets hot, which on modern powersupplies is basically never
its this thing: "Zero RPM Fan Mode: Virtually silent operation at low and medium loads"
Well if the lights are on it's getting power. Follow the instructions for the BIOS Flashback
Yes the CPU light is on because you have no CPU plugged in.
You need to follow the procedure for the BIOS Flashback
yeah i plugged it in and hit the button
It should have some sort of light to show when it's working and when it's done. It will explain it in the manual
there wasnt a manual
the dude in the video also explains it
if you had watched the video and paid attention you would know
theres no manual
Powered by AMD Ryzen AM4 processors, the MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK inspired by the military armor design, tuned for better performance by Core boost, DDR4 Boost, Lightning M.2 with M.2 Shied
how long do bios normally take
couple minutes
Updating BIOS with Flash BIOS Button
- Please download the latest BIOS file that matches your motherboard model from
the MSI® website.- Rename the BIOS file to MSI.ROM, and save it to the root of your USB flash drive.
- Connect the power supply to CPU_PWR1 and ATX_PWR1. (No need to install CPU
and memory.)- Plug the USB flash drive that contains the MSI.ROM file into the Flash BIOS Port
on the rear I/O panel.- Press the Flash BIOS Button to flash BIOS, and the LED starts flashing.
- The LED will be turned off when the process is completed.
Once all LEDs are gone, install it to a case, along with everything else
alright
(You did back up your files before replacing the motherboard, right?)
the red light stopped flickering and it restarted
its brand new ma g
my old pc
is still on
with the old psu and motherboard
do i need to back them up, i factory reset it not to long ago
i got like nothing
It's up to you, but I would suggest, if you haven't also got a new hard drive / SSD to completely clean install Windows to use with this motherboard.
i got it on a
hard drive
windows
external
its how i reinstalled it last time
OK. Go ahead and clean reinstall Windows now.
Yeah don't just swap the hard drive from your old PC to this one and think it will work. You need a fresh install for this system.
Usually you can't carry OS installations across different motherboards
Just put the new PC together first.
Alright
Make sure to confirm that all of these are in place.
CPU (processor)
Its cooler
RAM
Video card (-X Ryzen CPUs before 7000 require a video card)
At least 1 internal storage drive
yes ik
Don't forget the PCIe power cable for the vid
so unplug it all?
And to re-iterate from before, just in case. DO NOT reuse power cables from your old PSU.
They likely won't fit anyway, but if they did, that's how you get it to go bang.
i wont
And yes, because you're replacing the motherboard and PSU, you need to take all the old stuff out if your reusing that case.
You can leave the case fans in position
alright
Do you have new thermal paste for your CPU cooler?
Also, if it were me. I'd plan on getting a larger CPU cooler as well.
I've got this beast on my 5900x https://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/1378
do i have to replace where all these are
I mean your taking the motherboard out, so yes you need to unplug everything
the whole mobo
Make sure you've taken out all the screws, then push it in from the IO Shield and lift it out
Where you plug all your USB stuff into on the back
The shield around it snaps on, so it's sometimes a bit stiff to come out
how do i take this out
Just push it
Yeah, you'll probably need to, to get it in the case.
If your new motherboard has an IO Shield install that first.
yh
But I think that motherboard might have an integrated one
Remember to put the stand offs into the case first
You'll need to just move your current ones to line up with the larger motherboard
?
so i got sumn to show u
all my fans and shit are connected into this mess…
nor do ik where to put everything else
old psu^
I mean they all go into the same sort of ports on that motherboard. I linked you the manual which tells you were everything is.
The fans should just be able to plug straight into the motherboard. I have no idea what's going on with the cabling you have on your old PSU.
Looks like a pre-build classic connector mess.
yep
its from a prebuilt
untangle it if you want to use whatever they've done, otherwise, just plug the fans directly into the motherboard.
Was it new or used?
new
whats it supposed to look like
Yes those
You'll likely have a couple
I would suggest putting the GPU in last though
As it's the biggest thing and it will just get in the way otherwise
how long will this whole process take
What process, plugging everything in?
yeah
i got it all untangled
its still a mess
lmfao
idk where anything goes
I mean however long it takes you. If you've not done it before it will take longer.
update to all: it indeed fixed my problems thank you so much
Nice!
Did you set any BIOS settings yet?
Don't forget to enable resizable BAR
It does close to nothing
oh okay
whats the best way
to test my fps?
in a game
Did you test OCCT Power test and it passed without shutting down?

Every % helps
yes
