what do you want to do exactly? keep the same settings you had before shutdown?

#

have you tried using an hdmi cable? you said you only swapped dp cables

#

also try to set a custom resolution through nvidia with the native resolution + the frequency setting you want and check the box "enable resolutions not exposed by the display"

Well it is supposed to be! I mean, at least, if its not, still being able to choose the 144 hz option in NVIDIA settings without having the reboot the PC.
I've didn't tried an HDMI cable. Might solve the problem but there's still something wrong with DP cable which isn't suppose to happen.
Usually, it's not really recommended to set a custom resolution. If it do not let you pick the 144 hz, something must be wrong, no?

Why do you have to change it through Nvidia at all?

#

Change it through windows

@carmine flame there issue here seems to be that the monitor changes to 120hz at random intervals

Am I blind? O_o, where is the option? @valid shell

carmine flame
#

Can you also send all of your OSD settings

valid shell

#

On screen display of your monitor

#

Also have you updated monitor drivers?

tepid summit
#

Yep, I've tried to update firmware from Asus website, no luck

#

Is that what you were looking for?

carmine flame
#

Yes, take shots of all the menus

#

First of all disable any kind of preset

#

You're at racing mode right now

#

Disable it or set to default, not sure how it's called

tepid summit
#

It is the color calibration mode, its actually the default one

carmine flame
#

Not sure, usually racing mode sets boost mode to on, not sure about asus models but check it I believe racing mode isn't default

#

I know it's a color calibration bur some of them enable strobing

tepid summit
tepid summit
#

They're also greyed out

valid shell
#

First one sort of rings a bed, what are its options?

tepid summit
valid shell
#

Can you try the third one and apply and see if the issue occurs?

tepid summit
#

Sure can try. It can take several days before the issue occurs again unfortunately, but worth a test.

valid shell
#

Oh that sucks

carmine flame
#

What about hdmi?

tepid summit
carmine flame
#

Ok. How does it look like when it goes to 120hz? Does the monitor flicker or just changes the refresh rate

tepid summit
#

But there must be something explaining why this happens with DP, which is suppose to be better than HDMI

#

Nope!

#

Its like if it was a 120 hz monitor

carmine flame
#

Can you wiggle lightly your dp cable if you're near your monitor

#

Lightly wiggle it and see if anything changes

tepid summit
#

Already tried that to see if there was something about a loose connection, but its fine. Also tried 2 monitors and 3 different DP cable, so should be that kind of issue

#

DP are clipped too

#

wiggling doesnt change that much thing 😅

carmine flame
#

Just thought it might be been a 'damaged port'

#

But damn

tepid summit
#

Damn indeed, probably the most difficult issues I've been facing in PCs

carmine flame
#

Honestly have no idea, I'll try and search on the web and if I find something that might be of use I'll send it

#

Never seen anyone with the problem like yours

tepid summit
#

I found 2 similar issues, and thats it

carmine flame
#

I'd also contact asus and let them know of the issue id you haven't already

tepid summit
tepid summit
carmine flame
#

Yes, that's true. They have problems on the support side as well, in USA to be exact

tepid summit
carmine flame
#

When did this start happening? Something recently or was it from when you got your monitor?

tepid summit
#

a couple months after buying the monitor, but maybe I didn't notice the 140hz->120hz before I first notice there was an issue so I coudln't tell exactly when it really started.

#

It's my second monitor aswell

carmine flame
#

You ever clean installed windows?

tepid summit
#

Should have done 3-4 time since I firstly noticed it

carmine flame
#

Just about to type it might be something with task scheduler but you already fid clean instals

#

So can't be that

tepid summit
#

And yeah, reproducing the issue on a complete different system eliminate pretty much the PC being the culprit

#

And swapping the monitor/cable being hardware at all

carmine flame
#

Have you tested with gsync off

tepid summit
#

Its always off

#

I main Rocket League game and its better to turn it off for competitive games

#

So I never use it

carmine flame
#

It's on inside monitor osd

tepid summit
#

Probably yes

carmine flame
#

Try turning it off and see if it fixes anything

tepid summit
#

While it happens, I should just try to enable/disable stuff in it

valid shell
# tepid summit From what I can see, I feel it couldn't be hardware, except if I had 2 monitors ...

Probably something software I feel like, but seeing nobody having the same problem on my monitor and Asus telling me its an unknown issue make me very confuse.
Look, the reality is that when it comes to any piece of software there's going to be niche cases, and GPU driver development is one of (if not the most) complicated part of computer science. I've seen countless issues in the open source drivers be caused by one line in multi million line software lol.

#

You're very likely hitting some niche case.

tepid summit
#

But yeah I understand what you're talking about!

#

There is no setting that, when enabled, it caps the frequencies to 120 Hz right?

carmine flame
#

Inside nvcp and inspector no

#

Inside your osd no as well

tepid summit
#

Alright

carmine flame
#

Some monitors do requires gsync to be active in order to achieve maximum refresh rate but yours isn't one of them

tepid summit
#

Okok!

carmine flame
#

And that's the only option that could kind of be the thing that's causing it but then again a really low chance as well

#

So test it and we'll see

#

And about custom resolution, have you tried running at custom resolution?

tepid summit
#

Because actually, my G sync is "On" in OSD, so I can enable it on Windows but its disabled on NVIDIA settings. When the issue will occur, should I try disabling it in OSD?

carmine flame
#

Some monitors moght get blurry if you create custom resolution tho

tepid summit
#

Yeah thats what im afraid of

tepid summit
#

And even if I do so, would still be an issue

carmine flame
#

I'd also suggest that when it happens, the problem, then head to create a custom 144hz resolution and see will it apply

#

Or will give a blank screen

tepid summit
#

Alright, worth a try!

tepid summit
#

@carmine flame @valid shell
Good morning guys,
The guy with the same kind of error on Reddit answered me yesterday.
I feel, after all those troubleshooting steps that he's right. It's probably something wrong inside the monitor itself unfixed by Asus (or in his case Gigabyte) that cause the issue. I probably have to deal with it until I change the monitor completely :/

carmine flame
tepid summit
carmine flame
#

Is it under warranty?

tepid summit
# carmine flame Is it under warranty?

It is, but doubt they will do anything for it since the monitor has been swapped. If they ever do something worth it, it would be to swap for a similar monitor, like VG27AQ (like the other one on my dual screen setup) or VG27AQL1A, which perhaps doesnt have this issue. But coming from Asus, high doubt.

#

Still in touch with them right now thought, waiting for a reply.

carmine flame
#

Have you bought it from retailer or directly from asus

carmine flame
#

If you got it from retailer than contact them if Asus doesn't comply, as retailer should be responsible for defects

#

Third party or asus?

tepid summit
#

Shipped and Sold by Amazon. But its been a year now. Already contacted them as sometime, Amazon are really chill. But they told me to contact the manufacturer.
