(Fedora 37) I think this may have started after I installed protontricks to enable Rain World mods. I tried deleting my WINE configs, as well as reinstalling WINE itself, but I still can't open .exe files that I was able to just a few weeks before. The only app that gives me an error notification is Risk of Rain (the first one, running through a launcher other than Steam), and the reason says: wine64-preloader killed by SIGSEGV. I'm not sure where to find the logs or anything like that, I'm pretty new to Linux. It's also worth mentioning that Windows games opened through Steam via Proton work fine, it's just the games that I download from, say, itch.io that won't open anymore.
#[Somewhat solved] Can't open .exe through WINE anymore

does winecfg open in a terminal successfully?
Yes, that worked!
interesting, so wine itself is still functional
I bet the problem has to do with wineprefix or something but I have no idea how any of that works
you can try a fresh wineprefix yeah
How can I reset it?
you can nuke the existing one by deleting the .wine folder or WINEPREFIX=(a different folder) wine (exe) to temporarily use a different one
each wineprefix is its own virtual copy of windows
steam uses its own for each individual proton game, which is likely why those still work
interesting
I will try that momentarily
okay, well a new .wine folder was generated on launch but it still failed.. let me see if I can copy the whole output from the launcher'
s terminal thingy
Maybe that will help?
No
thanks a bunch
i found a strikingly similar bug report on the fedora bugzilla, also with 7.22-staging... no activity on the report though https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2154394
but at least it isn't just you
perhaps as a workaround you could use lutris or bottles in the meantime (both have their own copies of wine, and we know proton works)
I think I’ll try using bottles, I’ve heard good stuff about it
Thanks for the advice
Well, Bottles seems to be working wonderfully for any itch.io games I have downloaded
Now for the hard part, getting RoR to work
The launcher I'm using is made in gtk and it's able to edit mods, and it basically just runs the game using wine
So I'm wondering if I can just edit my mods with the launcher and then open the .exe through bottles...
I guess we'll see very soon
well, changing mods seems to work, and achievements also seem to sync. Thanks a lot!
hopefully the upcoming ror remake will make things a bit more seamless for ya in future
