You can download the assets manually. There's a separate folder for ozone, xmb, etc iirc.
The assets folder is probably set to a restricted folder without write access.
Change it in your directories to something in your home directory.
I did that, updated the assets again then restarted, still the same
Unless by manual you mean with something like Yay or Pacman
Gonna try a reinstall to see if it changes anything
Should I try installing it with Pacman again or Flatpak?
Reinstalling did not work, gonna try flatpak
Nevermind downloading the Appimage worked
I'm good now
Okay, I've read from hunterk's post that RetroArch through package managers has a lot of things that lead to headaches. They can all be changed, but it's best to use the appimage version in Linux. I had the same problem with assets not working, so I manually copied the assets to the appropriate folder, which worked. The default folder was in a restricted location too.
Yeah I used the Appimage version and its much better
simple rule : if you installed it from your package manager you have to install assets from your package manager.
As they disabled the Online updater.
Otherwise, use AppImage package or compile your own version.
@broken goblet in case you should have installed the package retroarch-assets-xmb for xmb menu driver https://archlinux.org/packages/?sort=&q=retroarch-assets&maintainer=&flagged=
