I agree, but I think the lack of supply hubs is part of the idea. It becomes incredibly difficult to push into the part of China that's the least developed, and if you want to have supply you have to invest into it yourself

China struggled to modernize in the late qing simply because they underestimated the importance of railroads. So investing into supply is actually something that an invading army has to do.
