For me, it’s super satisfying seeing their feeding response, and unlike wild ants, I can see into their nest and how they’re growing.
It’s also really cool to see how much they’ve grown since I got the queen.
Talcum powder works very well at keeping them in, they slip off it and can’t climb up. That’s why an empty ice cream tub with sand and a test tube inside for a nest, and a lining of talcum powder works really well to keep them contained at a low cost
Unless you’ve got the notorious fire ants of Asia and the Americas, they won’t even try to escape if you give them food and sugars and water. Ants don’t even know that they’re in captivity for their whole lives, they just act how they would in nature
TL;DR it’s fun if you’re into nature and insects and it’s surprisingly easy to keep them contained.
