2 types of factories

Civillian factories -> The more you have, the faster you can build stuff on your territory, and the more resources you can import, whenever you import a resource you trade 1 of your civilian factories to get 8 of said resource

Military factories -> making guns and military stuff ofc

Dockyards-> military factories but for ships

2. Infrastructure, your own land has resources in certain provinces, the better infrastructure in a province, the more resources it generates, the faster you can build in it and sometimes it adds more building slots

3. actual fighting, just pull up a combat guide for beginners
