if I am going to be attacking with infantry space marines would be most optimal for the armor stat

but then there is a question of SPGs or regular tanks? (medium of course)

SPGs have higher soft attack making this division more useful against other infantry but it has lower breakthrough and SPGs get like one bonuse from doctrines (assuming only specifically SPG buffs actually apply to SPGs, I think regular tank buffs dont apply to them just regular tanks)

normal tanks have a bit lower soft attack but higher breakthrough so you take slightly less losses on the offensive
