There are zero alt history options so you just have to do EXACTLY what your country did in WW2
You can't really change ideology. Politics is bare bones. You can be influenced by other countries. You can't join a faction your country wasn't in IRL. Your research and production is destroyed. Combat is horrible and has to be micromanaged. AI is op. No focus trees.

There is a bug that when you take a state it might be considered still in control of your enemy. Also your cores could be that tile in Northern Italy or Slovenia, but I'm not sure about that, also south Denmark you can core too I'm pretty sure

Usually most focus paths allow you to steal Slovakia. You want to get as much natural terrain barriers as possible (rivers, mountains, etc.) to bear against the Soviets or Germans
Hungary has a large vulnerability, it is quite flat. Which means armies have an easier time invading, except for the giant lake. That's the only defense Hungary really has. Stealing as many mountainous provinces as possible makes it easier to last amongst the two giants on the east and west
This is generic advice since it isn't specified what political ideology you want to be
but I had tons of fun as democratic Hungary actually
I can't remember if it was because I had a mod that turned on democracy justification but there's quite a bit of land in the dem tree and the Soviets start off friendly (at first) and you get to be in the Allies which means doing whatever the frick you want
