Don't worry, we all did this on our first time playing, it's no big deal, but this game is more than just "soldier shoot enemy soldier, me win battle".

i'm back. if you ask me, yes i do think hoi4 is certainly worth learning, since not only is it fun but it also teaches you to discipline yourself to pay attention and use your brain. plus the first 100-500 hours is the hardest time; after that it's just a breeze.

i would say treat this game like a hobby/skill you wish to learn

compartmentalise the game into "knowledge modules" so it doesn't feel as overwhelming

start with bittersteel's tutorial video to see what you need to learn first. focus tree? division design? battalion/support companies types and stats? air design and mechanics? naval design and mechanics?

pick one topic and slowly digest it over a week or two. use your brain and read every single tooltip you come across (hover your mouse over any icon you see. there are tooltips in the most obscure places in this game), and cross-reference with the videos, hoi4 wiki and discord communities

spend a lot of time into each playthrough. my playthroughs take a week on average since i pause the game a lot to make decisions

if i were you i would focus on taking in what's being shown to me instead of just "having fun". ask yourself why certain things exist (ie. if you are presented with two mutually exclusive foci where one is worse than the other, ask yourself why it is worse. is it because of bad game design, or are you going to be rewarded with something better down the focus tree?)

Yes. If you want to use them in mountains make them 32w, else 36w is the right width. With 40w you can only put one div into a battle at one time losing out on around 70-80% attack. Also add Medium Flame throwers as support if you have NSB

Artillery is very expensive and does not add a lot of soft attack per combat width while providing almost no breakthrough. It's good around 1936-37 but falls off when you hit better gun techs and finish stuff like doctrines (SF get like 20% more attack from doctrine + commando advisor it's 30% total)

most countries get a 100% on mech, without ahead of time bonus that Canada get it still finishes researching late to have meaningful amount built before '39

if you have mechanised researched you can go to your production tab, click on the customise icon of the mech and spend like 200-300xp to lower its production cost from 8 to 4, which can be lowered further to like 3 with mios

you can use cav before you get mech

So just tested with the US, if you IMMEDIATLY rush the 100% research bonus for mechanized (which is a terrible idea that royally messes up your economy) and start researching them as soon as the focus is done, all while maxing out any research bonus you can get, you finish the research in early august '38 leaving you 5 months to produce ~2000 mechanized starting with base efficiency, you would then need ~ 100 mils on it, which you definitely won't have.

Realistically, you can have them ready somewhere between end of '39 to mid '40 without delaying getting rid of isolation and great depression (and you are giving up important stuff for that, like delaying your extra research slots by several months)
