Oh ok. I’d suggest getting some experience by trying something a little smaller. Maybe try making a mod where the murder drones burrow out of a county in the base game, creating a new nation on the map with a focus tree.
That’d help you get experience without getting overwhelmed by a large project

Most useful „idea“ ppl are the ones that make for example an focus tree concept with pictures and allat, shows you what the focuses will do and their modifiers.
They may not be too particularly helpful but as a coder, you can get straight into coding instead of just mapping out an focus tree, thinking of national spirits, the modifiers etc. etc.

This shows up when code contains the old references to the new doctrines.

You could take inspiration from country's history file or peep into the focus trees that give the doctrine advancements.
As a temporary fix, I just used notepad++ to remove all doctrine instances.

For the doctrines, you can just relocate those out of the technology and do as given (taken from UK's 1939 start date country file):

Yeah, I guess you can delete the effects in the focus trees, those could be updated later to fit the new doctrines.

For the building.txt, I go into the nudge and press "random in every state", "validate", then move the "buildings.txt" from documents/../HoI4 into the mod. That usually does the trick.

Try running the game in debug mode, map related errors won't crash the game on startup so you'd be able to open the nudger and see if something is really wrong

Ignore it or disable the extension I guess, if you run the game in debug mode (by adding the -debug launch option in steam) the game will conveniently open the error log

Check the bottom right corner when looking at the localization file.
There should be a box saying UTF-8. Click it, select save with encoding and then select UTF-8 with BOM

Are there any evergreen mods that are compatible on any version of the game, or is it all needing to be updated to the current version?
I can't think of anything else but the music mods, because those aren't affected. Partially counting mod that replaces all ".dds" portraits. The newest versions could work with older versions of the game without any issues, but I guess that needs some maintenance.

Smaller mods, particularly those that don't add content tend to still work. Most ironman compatible mods tend to also work without an update.

You have to scope it correctly, focuses are already scoped to the country so it is unnecessary
Hey guys so im working on a mod and i added a few new states, and manually moved a single province from a state to another state. The game somehow crashes, does anyone care to take a look?
Me and two of my friends want to work on a mod, i created the mod and started working on it early before they could start workin on it,
when they were ready i made a GitHub repo and after that my changes dont register no more.
I literally removed the political power that one of my focuses give and replaced it with add_ideas but in the game it shows that the focus still gives 150pp although i removed it

If it is in a folder different from hearts of iron iv/mods, are you maybe editing the code in the repo's folder instead of in the mod's folder?

uploaded my mod by dragging the mod from my explorer,
added my friends as collaborators and i worked on the mod by opening VS code in GitHub Desktop version
You probably have 2 copies of your mod then, check documents/github

it's on_weekly, you could also use on_weekly_TAG (in your case on_weekly_LSA) for a little performance optimization. on_weekly_TAG only runs for the specified tag, not every existing tag

You can create a local repository directly from GitHub desktop, where you can then select the path in documents/Paradox Interactive/Hearts of Iron IV/mod
Your friends could follow one of the many available guides (here is RoN's https://github.com/stuffi3000/Rise-of-Nations/wiki/How-to-Create-a-Local-Copy-of-a-Git-Repository) to clone the repository directly into the mod folder, where they can then start working on it. The -debug launch option enables hot reload for most files so it is also really useful to enable if they haven't already. Make sure the name and folder of the mod is the same for all of you since it does simplify stuff quite a bit.

Hello, I assume this is the correct channel to ask a modding question. If I define additional, unique cosmetic tags in cosmetic.txt in my mod, and someone else defines additional, different cosmetic tags in cosmetic.txt in their mod, is one mod going to overwrite the other or both would be loaded ?
maybe you need to delete the main models of the country to add fix it

The good thing about most cases like that is that, as long as the file is in the correct location, it can have any name you want

If you search last/first name in the char files its usually really easy to find characters
You could just rename the localization/english folder if searching for it manually doesn't work
well for some reason the character i was looking for didn't have any portrait (probably had the default one) so i had to look at the txt file where characters are defined
DLC folders have portraits too in case you cant find it
including the integrated_dlc folder for WTT/TFV/MTG/DOD

Use the official hoi4 modding wiki tho, it‘s very useful
You can skip like the first bunch of vids if u rlly want to dive into modding immediatley, watch the vids u need to do what you want to do and uh you should be able to start without much problem

Their hoi4 tutorials are up to 9 years old, anything that isn't a core feature will have changed by then. It won't have any of the designers, the "new" character system (from NSB), potentially won't have the changes to carriers (from MTG), shared focus trees, post NSB doctrines, post NCNS doctrines, factions, special projects, collections, the map has changed quite a bit since then, MIOs, a lot of triggers, a lot of effects, a lot of modifiers, the entirety of dynamic modifiers, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of stuff here

continuous_focus_position = { x = ... y = ... } somewhere in the focus tree, I'd recommend before the first focus since that's where vanilla and most big mods put it. The steps are really small, so don't shy away from using big numbers

Can't someone make a mod about PoW's where you can set the surrender rate of each army when encircled, like you can set it to low medium and high. Low = 5 procent of the soldiers surrenders (the country from which that army was receives 30 procent of their equipment,other country receives the rest) and whit high = 60procent of the soldiers surrenders (the country from which that army was receives 5 procent of their equipment, other country receives the rest). The country that takes those PoW's can build military factories (cheaper ones then normal) where the PoW's can produce equipment (you can also trade these PoW's between your faction.

You can show it on the country selection screen if its a starting idea
If you upgrade the idea always in a fixed order, just make it into multiple ideas sharing the same name
if you can upgrade it in different orders, make a dynamic modifier, unless its only upgraded like 3 times

You shouldnt use nudge for anything but fixing building/unit positions unless youre doing huge map changes

- Copy the old state into your mod if it isnt already
- Duplicate that file as basis for the new state
- Change the filename, ID and loc line to the next available ID. Do not rename the old file if youre overriding only part of the vanilla map
- Clear the province list from the new file and cut and paste provinces from the old state into the new one that you want to split off
- Correct buildings/population in the state files
- Launch the game with nudger, select units/buildings and validate the new and old states, check for errors by comparing the new and old file before applying the /map folder from Documents into your mod
