I'm at a loss for what to do in order to win with this character.
Thanks fam appreciate it.
big things i noticed are u being a resource hog, as in taking lots of dmg
and ur target prioritization isnt optimal
ideally u take out squishy isolated targets
ASAP
i notice many times where u go for big damage in clusters rather than the easy free isolated kill
At the start that is what I used to try to do. The problem I'm having is if I'm waiting for an engage to get on a good target. My team just gets picked off around me. I don't really have time not to be a distraction. It's a weird one cause I totally understand what you are saying and agree but I can't make that play style work cause someone will just eat an arrow or get picked by a hit scan then I'm jsut waiting forever
It’s the proper playstyle. Being a distraction and taking tons of damage is not
You want value but you don’t want to be a resource sink at the same time
Small things like peeking and hiding next to walls as you would do with a bubble will drastically reduce the damage you take
I watched the code in the title of this post
I’ll point out specific timestamps of egregious mistakes
0:00:53
ignoring the illari and focusing on being in the "action" instead
illari was a free kill, but you didnt pick it up until 15 seconds later
0:01:49
with no bubble in a 3v4, you jump into 3 enemies and take enormous damage
0:05:05
you should be bubbling the entrance and holding the ducklings behind, but you jump after tank instead
this one was extremely bad as they just walked through uncontested and killed your bastion and mercy'
clearer picture of above incident
this is all feeding into my point that you need to target squishies more and stop going for the "immediate action"
0:09:55
jumping 1v5 into whole team, taking way too much damage then dying
It feels like if I don't do anything that someone on my team gets picked, some of these are bad for sure. Guess I'm expecting too much for my team to not die while I'm gone for a few seconds aha
Ill play more patient and wait and see how the games go
i think you need to watch your healers POV and look how much they are doing to keep you up, you dont allow them any freedom to do anything else
thats 2 less people healing your dps, thats 2 less people doing damage to the enemy team
also this isnt a healthy mentality for climbing, i think you need to stop focusing on what your team is doing wrong or right, and focus on what you can do better
its also not a patience thing, its about getting better timings
there is no easy answer to just improve, but over time you test and find better when the good timings are
and when the bad timings are
Once principle that really helped me improve my timings was the A10(if you don’t watch him you should) duckling principle.
The tank is a mama duckling and the squishies are the baby ducklings that follow
Just wait for the tank to cross and u can get the ducklings
Fair fair
Do you mind checking one of the other vids just to confirm that its an issue all round. I know games can change but if what I'm doing is consistent then I need to get on that hard
Even if it's just a speed watch and then - you do the same things...
Thanks again fam
obv theres lots to work on, otherwise u would be champ rank. I think something i want to convey is that you need to play winston at a far higher level than plat if you are going to stay winston into 2-3 counters every game and climb out of plat.
i watched ur other games, and i think you are clearly better than others in the lobby by quite a bit, but you are being forced to play at a much higher level in order to win, an almost insurmountable task(unless ur deep smurfing)
I am also a one trick believer though, and I will always support just playing one character only to really learn them well
@tawny ice I disagree on this one. You’re not good at holding chokes at Winston. You should instead be fighting where your team can capitalize on the space/distraction that you are creating. Unless your team is setup to fight there for some reason, I don’t like this spot as Winston.
You’ll zap for ult charge, but it may be better to flank and wait for their frontline to move into your team’s LOS(unless a kill presents itself).
Hallways like those are death traps for Winston.
I'm open to all feedback so hit me up with whatever you got. It's all good to me :)
Doomfist, DVA, Junkerqueen, Orisa, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma, Winston, Wrecking Ball, Zarya- need help with any of these heroes? Need help understanding tank as a whole (heck, SUPPORT and DPS as a whole, too?)? Coach Spilo gives a COMPLETE seminar on how to play this entire tank cast (besides the soon to be reworked Roadhog) including (but not ...
The Winston chapter is a solid one
But another good one is this

Yeah I've seen that one
If you try to stuff them in a choke, you’ll get a lot of cleave damage but nothing will come of it besides feeding your HP and bubble cooldown
I started watching that one but the issue is, the way you play Monkey up in those ranks is a guaranteed loss in gold/plat
You want to demand attention while also receiving follow-up
Not really, no
It’s the same principles, but you are thinking more independently
Keep in mind that follow-up isn’t just a teammate 321diving with you
it can be a hitscan that is benefitting from the attention you’re receiving and is instead free to shoot to their little heart’s content
even if it’s on a different target
It’s the exact same principles as that vod, but you’re playing to create more individual value and to rely less on support/dps help
that means your timing, staging, and target priority need to be better than a tank of your rank
For example, a big part of low elo prefers hard brawl tanks because shoot when the guy is attacking is easy
and those tanks are healing sponges
dive is different in that you have a limited window of effectiveness before needing to hard disengage
if you’re plat on winston, you likely go in at the wrong time and/or without a plan
you also will likely drop your bubble at the wrong time
have a little more patience and take a second to see where your team can fight
then stage your dive accordingly
it’s super easy at that rank to prey upon a target that’s too far away from their team
I haven’t seen your replay, but you’ll likely be trying to force kills when you’ve already gotten value via enemy cooldowns/disengaging to heal
don’t do too much and work to understand what value on Winston really means
does any of that make sense?
Normally I’d agree, but if you check the vod and see the tank went off into narnia and jumping after that in this scenario was not really worth it
@hoary rain more clear view of it
I was looking over threads during a coffee break and missed this gem of a picture - the battle monkey jumping the battle cattle
