Hey! I’d be glad to give you some notes, I’ll look over the vod and send them over after I write them up

1:01 – Though the positioning of this kiriko is odd, the shuriken +dash combo is good. You just missed the finish. Seems you may not be used to the dash quite yet. A skill to learn going forward is to determine where you’re going to end up after the dash, before you use it. This will help with your awareness. Once that is done you can go for the finish much easier (such as a quick turn around followed by a melee or right click depending on the range)

1:08 – good finish with the dash! I see afterwards you seem to get a little nervous and/or lost. In that situation where you get the kill remember your dash resets upon every kill. Also, that Baptiste is unaware you are there for a good while giving you an opportunity to get some damage on him before he can react. If its nerves just remember to breathe and take your time, if its awareness don’t worry that will come the more you play.
(also, I’m suspicious that you play on controller so I recommend you play on a higher sensitivity with Genji on controller as you’ll be doing a lot of spinning around)

1:49 – be careful about wasting your abilities like that. You did not need to dash nor deflect there, and this could leave you in some very sticky situations as Genji. Use all your abilities with purpose.

2:03 – I don’t want to go too deep into this, but your mechanics need some work. I’m assuming you’re a new player? The mechanics will improve over time of course, using code VAXTA in the game browser will help get you started on some aim training for sure, though most of your improvement will be coming from just playing the game.

2:06 – though this is a bronze bastion who doesn’t know better, walking in front of a bastion while they are in turret form is 90% of the time a bad idea. The only time it is ever a good idea is if you have deflect ready to use. Though that trick will not work too well on a good bastion, it will be good to use for now. Instead in this situation, while you hear him in turret form, block his line of sight with the lamp right in front of you, or use the sigma shield to the right, or both. Anything is better than going left here.

2:27 – you know they are there lol don’t ignore them when theres only 2 of them in the fight vs your whole team.

3:14 – good job helping kill the sombra. I saw you tried to run away and ignore them a little which can work. Running away is one thing, ignoring is another. In this case running to your supports to make it a 2v1 is a good call, but it looked more like you were running away to ignore them but in this case, it would only lead to sombra being in a fight with Lucio 1v1 putting Lucio out of the fight.

3:58 – good job isolating the kiriko. You didn’t get the kill but that’s ok because you forced her to use her teleport which is a very important ability to force out. Think about where she was looking when she used it, she can only teleport where she’s looking. Which just so happened to be deep into your own team, finish the kill, you got it!

4:18 – THIS is a scenario to ignore sombra. That moira is in your team damaging them AND you watched her use her fade. She has no way out, free kill

4:20 – no reason to deflect there, bad habit to fix, use it with purpose. Think about WHY deflect is good, what is it good for? Common answers would be a tool for both dueling, and escape. Use it to deflect an enemy’s tool back at them (ana nade, Cassidy nade, hanzo arrow etc…) or use it as a means to get out and walk back to your team if you’ve gotten in a pickle.

4:33 – good dash to finish the kill, teabag for style 😊

4:50 – im cheering you on so hard right now! That is a good engage, isolating the kiriko is amazing here because she must choose to keep her tank alive and die, or let the tank die to kill you. Practice your mechanics and you’ll get this kill next time for sure. (also, side note, if you are this close ALWAYS do the fan shuriken not the 3 round burst, that is mostly a mid-range poke tool)

5:35 – ok blade time, I like the timing, supports are clumped together which can be nice. There are a lot of micro decisions that go into making a good blade. Tracking enemy movement abilities, enemy position, team position, enemy ultimates, etc.. but for now, I don’t think we need to go too deep into it. One thing that is off is that you use blade, and then you stare at them for a whiiiiile before you do anything, you have 6 seconds you gotta get in there. You kill the mercy which is good she’s a good target, but then you turn to the tank instead of the other targets that are much easier to kill. General rule of thumb do not attack the tank with blade. I like to look at the scoreboard and pick a target, in this case mercy is a good pick. Generally, like to go for immobile targets, the less defense the better. So characters like Zenyatta are normally my #1. For now, just don’t fight the tank, pick a target, and kill them, and don’t die trying to get a big clip.

6:18 – good kill on the bastion. Looks like you’ve got some space and time right now. Take a second, look around for a vulnerable target, someone unprotected. It’s possible you couldn’t have stopped the rez form mercy but maybe you could have killed her after the rez.

6:21 – good target priority! The tank is all the way on point, but both of his supports are attacking your team and you go for them instead, good idea. There tank will die, once you kill them, good job. Not going to talk mechanics, instead I’ll say, don’t bother deflecting against moira, never a good idea. Instead, you want to save your dash as your panic tool. If you want to challenge a moira you need to remember you have to aim, she doesn’t. don’t overcomplicate your movement, focus on hitting shots and either dashing for the kill, or dashing for escape.

7:00 – I like the routing here. Going to the side of the main fight, and not becoming the center of attention, you’re keeping up pressure on their backline while there tank and others stare forward. GREAT JOB KEEP DOING THIS! Remember, you are a ninja, you CAN sneak around and ambush people when they aren’t aware of you.

7:20 – too much tank attention, your team is dying around you, make the enemy tank’s team die around him. Also, if the moira is right up in your face like that use the fan shuriken, it shoots faster which will give you more burst damage

7:37 – Too slow to decide. That mercy is alone, you can kill her. Making the right decision right now is more important than the speed of the decision though in my opinion. It looks like you ended up going for her, but the bastion interrupted, which is solved if you made the decision faster. So, I commend the correct decision, speed will come as you play more. HOWEVER, you recognized once the bastion showed up that you were in over your head, and you got out which is a VERY important thing to recognize and act upon so keep that up.

7:50 – you stopped playing lol id assume something went on outside the game, but if not, you gotta play until the buzzer sounds. The fight isn’t over until it says the rounds over, so make sure the team is dead and everyone who is killable has died, and then set up for the next fight. Take a strong position where you feel safe but threatening.

8:04 – that moira just faded into your face, she has no escape, kill her. Also, you heard bastion ult, try not to get killed when using blade, also I’m suspicious hat you just used your ultimate because everyone else was, that is a bad habit for blade, you will get shutdown very often. I also see you did not have a target in mind when you used it (unless it was the sigma, in which case don’t use it on him) and just kinda improvised. Try coming up with a plan on who you’re going to kill and how your going to do it.

8:54 – you’re kinda just standing out in the open fighting the sigma. Try to always play near hard cover, being out in the open is how you die to things like bastion, dva bomb, high noon, etc… also stop shooting the tank, you don’t do enough damage to out damage the healing he gets so your just likely gonna die. Generally, you shoot the tank to farm your ultimate, which is fine, but you don’t want to go all in on it like you are now UNLESS you can kill him, which you cant right now because he has all of his abilities and full health

9:10 – you get rezd, but then you target the echo while shes flying. Killing echo/pharah as genji can be a very mechanically challenging goal even for diamond+ players. You se the mercy at half health to your right, try targeting her. The bastion is there as well but your team is in a position to help you right now. Instead, you target the echo for little value and ignore bastion in turret form and die to him promptly.

9:57 – I feel like I see lag here so im not gonna comment

10:10 – you look very lost. You watched the moira fade into your team again, another free kill.

10:40 – keep going after that mercy here, she is just trying to stall. Kill her and the objective will move. Mercy is incredibly vulnerable here and if you keep trying, she will die, do not switch targets to the echo

Things to Keep Doing:

  • Isolating supports, keep flanking and pouncing on the backline, even if you don’t get the kill, it may distract them enough to impact the frontline.
  • Keep taking side routes. Off-angles are INCREDIBLY important, this relieves pressure on your tank and takes support away from theres.
  • Keep recognizing when you’re in over your head and retreating with wall climb to high ground safety or dashing out.

Main Takeaways:

  • Use VAXTA to get a better feel for shooting and move around your targets and using dash combos.

  • Think about when you’re using your abilities. Who are you using it on, what are you using it for, why are you using it.
  • Don’t focus too hard on the tank, if you can’t shoot anyone other than the tank, you need to move to a different angle where you can see others.
  • Pick ONE target for blade and do all the preparations you can to get that one kill (ask yourself, do they have a means of escape?)
  • Punish moira when she doesn’t have an escape (fade)

I know this is a lot but take it one step at a time. It takes a lot of time to put all of this into action, just focus on one point and once you’ve got that down to habit, get the next one. But don’t forget about the ones you’ve already practiced. If you’ve got any questions id, be super happy to answer! Good luck out there!

it takes practice for sure. remember to get the drop on them for starters, make sure their attention is somewhere else when you start to use the blade. also for closing the distance use your dash, it resets on every kill regardless of if youre using blade or not. but also you get the dash reset whenever you pull out your blade, so if you want you can close the distance, blade, and then youll have your dash again
