So this specific match i felt really good in my gameplay throughout the whole game, i make plenty of mistakes but overall i think my gameplay with mercy was good. I struggle a ton with trying to get good rezzes off and when to rez, I always either do a super risky rez that doesnt always work, or i miss a rez that couldve saved the fight. I also struggle usually with positioning but thats something i focused a ton on in this game. I feel my strengths are in my awareness (pointing out flankers, escaping situations where our DPS/Tank cant peel, and calling out important targets to our team), my ult usage, and whipping out my pistol when needed.

I'd like to inform that we were in voice comms during this as well but my team was pretty toxic to their healers.

First round i think went well though i kept getting cussed at for not damage boosting the whole round. I had a ton of positioning errors whenever a fight would get hairy and the frontline would mix with the enemies frontline (i did get doomfist punched a bunch in this game for it).

Second round i felt that i maybe had a ton more positioning problems than the first round. I pulled my pistol out a bit more this round and im not sure how to feel about it. my aim is definitely not the best i will say. Overall though i think my healing really saved the team a few times despite getting flamed everytime a fight would end for not healing enough...

All in all i want to gain some insight on what my true strengths and weaknesses are because i have a gut feeling that im a little overconfident in my strengths due to the constant blaming for not healing enough.

Edit: My IGN at top of post

First, I'm gonna recommend some setting changes with Mercy. (Options -> Change Hero -> Mercy) turn on Toggle Beam Connection (makes it so you don't need to hold left click/right click) & change Guardian Angel Target priority to either Prefer Facing Target or Facing Target Only. (Default is Prefers Beam target).

There's a lot of times when your beam on a friendly just instantly goes away when you go behind cover, the beam will last 2-3 seconds on the target once they are out of range or out of Line of Sight(LoS).

Your target priority could use some work. Generally when you play mercy your job is as an off-healer (outside of zen/lucio). You should always attempt to heal your other support so they can focus on keeping the tank up. Mercy should only really be focusing on DPS/Supports. When the tank starts falling to around 50% you can start healing them, but they should not be your priority. Your priority is basically: Other support > 50% tank > DPS > damage boost > tank.

Your ult should also be used more offensively, unless it is a situation where you are saving it for your own survivability. An example would be saving it for Genji blade so you can dodge his blade while still being able to heal your team. But in this situation there's noone to really pressure you so you should just be using it at the start of a team fight as soon as the enemy engages.

Also don't worry about damage boosting anything below diamond/masters. The reality is in this situation they don't understand that a damage boost/healing beam isn't god mode. For example the bastion was constantly standing in front of your tank trying to 1v5, not understanding that 5 people can deal 250 damage to him much faster than he can break a 700 HP shield + grasp, let alone kill anything. Bear in mind, people that overextend like this you can just use to get your valk by putting a heal beam on them since they WILL take damage in a few seconds.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ve always had the mindset of I need to damage boost when I’ve got no one to heal. I’ve always learned Value is key like what can I be doing other than sitting there doing nothing. The settings I’ll take a try on. Question, I’ve seen the toggle beam connection, I’ve been real worried about how I will get my beam “stuck” on someone due to always playing mercy the way I have now, how does one overcome that once I turn it on? like should i find a map or something to practice with it or should i just turn it on and mess up but learn to fix it?

You can disconnect the beam by just pressing the button again. So like, you'd just left click again to drop it from someone. It's literally just so you don't have to hold mouse 1/2 the entire game. Any change you do it going to feel awkward when you start, this is just so you can focus more on whats happening.

Bear in mind though, damage boosting is the best thing you can do.. if they're hitting shots. But the reality in low MMR is usually when you would be damage boosting you'll have more value just pulling out the pistol and spamming head level at the choke.

If you're going to practice, I would recommend practicing turning while you're in guardian angel and pressing space to go into different directions. Like you can guardian angel towards a target, turn to the right, press space, and now you're going in a completely different direction. just practice putting a beam on someone then hiding from the enemy
