#I have the "amp" (ampless), now I need help finding effects

I am returning to guitar after many years and am going ampless. The core of my setup will be the Simplifier DLX.

If I had to use only single-effect pedals, I'd probably start with at least a digital delay, tube screamer, wah, volume, and tuner. These four things (and their power supplies/cables) would cost at least $500 used... probably significantly more. Add in the fact that I'd like to have other effects to experiment with and suddenly a multi effects unit starts to make more sense.

Whatever I get needs to have the following:

  • Dedicated tap tempo OR the ability to easily connect an external one
  • Expression (for wah and volume, although I may buy a dedicated volume pedal regardless, so maybe just wah is fine)
  • At least 3 footswitches that can be used to turn on and off individual effects
  • Decent tube screamer and stereo delay
  • Stereo output
  • "Stomp box mode". I want to turn on and off individual effects with one switch, don't make me go through banks/presets/etc.
  • If amp/cab modeling is built in, I must be able to easily disable it and have that setting be retained

Other considerations:

  • Older units (10+ years old) are fair game as well as the latest
  • I've looked at the ME-80 and it can be had for very cheap, but the tap tempo situation seems undesirable, plus...
  • ...the ability to do "any effect on any switch" would be nice (a knock against things like the ME-80 that restrict each switch to a specific category of effect), but I may be able to live without this feature depending on cost
  • I'm willing to consider options that aren't a single, self-contained MFX unit, but the price has to be right OR the benefit has to be worth stretching my budget
  • My budget is more of a "target" cost of around $300. Less is great, more will need justification. Since I don't need [excellent] amp modeling/IR, I feel like this is do-able.

Thanks in advance!

(Heading this one off: I will not consider an HX Stomp. It seems extremely popular to recommend it to everyone, but it is far too expensive with features I would not take adantage of. Plus I'd still have to buy expression/volume/etc.)

Valeton stuff seems feature packed for the price, I just can't seem to find information about how friendly it is to my "no amp modeling/setting" requirement.

Right off the bat, I would say look at the NUX MG-30. It has everything you listed, and it was recently updated with the ability to load NAM profiles.
I was in a similar situation to you three years ago and am very happy I went with that unit.

For some reason I feel like real user pics help me make decisions, even if it doesn't tell me everything about specs

#

I like that there is (what appears to be) a set of buttons that are "on/off" toggles for everything.

you didn't misread

i was just curious if you had it on a board with something like another amp/cab modeler

etc

no problem, just a passing curiosity

It is really nice that there are individual buttons for the effects blocks, and the UI is great - makes you feel like you're adjusting the actual pedals they're emulating.

Sound-wise, I find the MG-30 warmer and more responsive than a Valeton unit, for instance.

Is the 30 newer than the 400?

No, I think the 400 is a bit newer. Though the 30 is more versatile, IMO. Both units are great though. Have tried the 400 as well and it was pretty good as well. I just prefer the processing/tone and the robustness of the 30.

yeah i just saw that the 30 has a better resolution for some things

is this something that has been fixed via firmware?

ah, dang. while it's nice that it comes with the external switch, this issue makes the mg-30 a nonstarter for me

#

it looks like it checks every other box, but this one is pretty important

I can see how that would be useful for a lot of players, but unfortunately it isn't something that would help me.
