#help with sculpting out a metal guitar tone

i got this for now
not sure where to go with it now, also not sure if im in the same key as the bass since the backing track is an old file
should i get a more 'metal-y' backing track? this one was branded as one so idk
what are you using for said tone ?
zoom g5n (mainly noise gate and golddrive), katana g3 100w on the lead setting, but mostly using it for eq and reaper for recording
why not just use the katana ? ... it has so much potential and you basically don't use it
and how are the EQ settings ? it feels like you have way too much top end
i thought it would be neat to gainstage using the zoom g5n so i can control how much gain there is
for more of a classic rock or heavy metal it sounds sort of okay
everything is at 50
yea right now i draw lots of inspiration from iron maiden so thats great to hear
but if i want it just a little bit heavier what should i change?
boost with a pedal, don't use the drive
drive is fine ... if it's set up as a boost
other amp model.. different speaker sim
wdym speaker sim
the katana has some sort of speaker/cab emulation right ?
yeh
use the lead channel and the gain at 7, bass at 7, mids at 7, treble at 10, also use channel 2
yea but if thats the speaker sim then what is the amp model
no the amp model is the lead chanel
do u use the app for the katana
yea
do u have like a picture?
Dude the katana + g5n is a good start wth
i think you're gonna have to mess around with the amp first before applying the multi effect, since you're gonna use the katana's amp sim. Or completely bypass the amp itself (idk if its possible with the katana) if you wanted to use the g5n entirely
For me i think i would start with the gain around 4-6, low 5, mid 6.5, high, 4. Presence around 6. (Leaning for a not too bright sounding).
It would probably sound slightly thin but you're going to boost it with effects and some eq-ing
yea i just tweaked the eq on the katana, havent really done much else
and tweaked the gain on it and on the g5n
sounds pretty decent for a tone with everything set at noon
lol yeah its a good amp paired with a good digital effect
i think im aiming more towards using the eq only for surgical stuff and tweaking the rest with the knobs
since i want it as a versatile base tone to use while playing with my bandmates
Do you want it more trashy or in the middle?
wdym by trashy
i mean its at 50
oh, so it's just how the katana lead sound then
ahh you mean in the recording
Yeahh
it could be a little bit from the g5n
i could reduce the treble on the boost there
its at 56
Yeah. It needed more mids and lows. Also mess around with the presence, see if you prefer bright sounding or less
You’re playing southern rock riffs bro
lol yea in the recording it does sound like it
it was just a one take thing
how does the melodic metal tone sound good with distortion
im trying to play something more melodic with distortion on but i feel like there should be less distortion
and when i turn it down nothing really changes
i still get that buzzing
after playing around for a little bit i made this tone, would you change it in any way?
excuse the sloppy playing
dial back treble a bit and add some mids
is it normal that the distortion seems a bit harsh now that ive added mids in
this is scratch city
what does that mean
that it has a very nasty grindy topend that is not pleasant
ok how do i fix it
roll back the treble but add a little presence
and add a boost, this already rolls of some top end and lowend
what boost? isnt boost only od?
you can use an overdrive as a clean boost, it pushes the amp a bit but also acts like a filter
you dial back the drive to 0 , dime the level
when set as a boost, an overdrive boosts 5-10db of all the frequencies 600-2,5k hz. those are the frequencies that push clarity and definition .
what's your setup from start to finish
HB CST-24T -> zoom g5n -> boss katana 100W gen3 (using the boss tone studio)
are you recording your tone in the room or through the software?
im using reaper
use an ir
whats an ir
"Impulse response"
When you're playing through an amp, you hear the sound from the speaker
When you're recording directly through the software, if you don't have an ir, it's like you're playing through the amp without the changes of the amp.
An IR is necessary to avoid extremely fizzy sound.

i thought the katana had something like that
microphone emulation or is that different
it is that, yes
well then i shouldnt have problems with that
im trying to recreate the tone from Spiral Dreams - Coroner but theirs is somehow really clear
i havent yet used a parametric eq for this tone maybe its from that
my tone sounds so farty wtf
i tweak it for a while and think yea this sounds kind of like the song then i play the song and its nowhere close
one sounds like wet farts and the other like good metal guitar
best thing you can do is edit your tone with the song playing in the background
