I currently have a fender stratocaster and a fender mustang amp. This coming christmas I want to ask for another guitar. Mainly to play really clean things like midwest emo. I like the sound of the telecaster but my dad says it's pointless to by another guitar when you can just by a different amp to make it sound how I want.

Is he right? Should I just get a different amp?

Yeah hes right, get a proper amp or a digital setup first. If you like midwest emo you might wanna get an overdrive and compressor pedal and if your amp doesnt have reverb/delay maybe one of those. I assume you live in europe or america, so you have some good cheap pedal options. Ampwise i wouldnt go with a tube amp or most modeling amps, probably a modern ss combo, like a laney foundry or blackstar debut or something, but theres plenty of options. Brands to avoid(mostly due to cost, and value/cost): fender, marshall, orange, vox. Also a telecaster is too close in sound to a mustang in sound to justify buying that, id get an hh guitar first, for versatility. A modeling amp that might be fine is the boss katana gen3 50/100. Also dont look at positive spark, they're okay but ass in comparison to amps with better cabs.

If you really want a tube amp look at the used market or get a bugera v55.

Oh you mean you have a mustang amp

Still get an amp first, you have a solid guitar, that covers like 95 percent of tones you need.

I'd say guitar first until your main guitar is like a 250-300€ one

then a good bedroom amp like the boss or fender

strat is fine, amp seems fine.
change guitar, not necessarily upgrade, if you want a different physical feel, like weight, balance, thickness of neck, neck curvature, body profile, or even just color/look.
change amp if you need more sound out of your amp, because you are playing in larger venues and cant be heard well by the audience, or if you specifically want to try different types of amps, or needs features from an amp that other amps dont have (fx loop for example).
other things would be to try a computer-interface to try messing with stuff on software
similar but different is to try out a pedal or two to get different sounds out of what you have.

maybe do something else like get a camera to record yourself, or audio recorder. maybe a mic, or other support.
