So basically I've always liked the idea of playing the guitar and after messing around with one properly for the first time at a freinds house I decided to see if there were any good deals. I'm pretty new so not really sure what styles of music I'd like to play but I'd like to try some nirvana and red hot chilli peppers and maybe some sorta chill campfire songs. Basically long story short is this a good deal and alright setup for a total beginner?
#Squier by Fender Stratocaster (£75) + Blackstar lt-echo 10 (£26) for an absolute beginner?

I only plan on playing in my room (pretty darn tiny) and most likely with headphones most of the time so figured I could get away with a smaller amp
The guitar looks alright, could go for something better, but you're gonna get bored of the amp, or you're gonna hate it
A good practice amp is the mooer hornet 15w
It has eq and effects so no need to hoard pedals
It's about £70
as already said ..the amp is the first thing you'd want to change ... if you're playing with headphones anyway : Nux Mightyplug Pro would be a great tool
I found a Fender Frontman 15B for £30 if thats any good?
oh wait hold up does it not have a gain knob?
Found this "Electric guitar amp 40 W" for £30, doubt it's actualy 40W but still looks half decent
They'll make a sound so that's good at least.. The frontman 15B is a bass amp though.
ah k, sorry i'm super new to all this XD
Those are the typical starter pack amps that don't sound good but at least they will amplify
I see you want to play with headphones, then a headphone amp would be much better (like ElSchaap says)
I meen i would still like to playwithout at times, how much would i have to spend for a half decent actual amp (2nd hand) compared to one of thoes? Like where does the price to quality line even out?
Good question, I have an old fender mustang I V2 and I find that usable. Those aren't expensive used
It just has a shit unnecessarily complicated interface
Like i'm seeing some for like £15 brand new, surely thats gota be wayyy to cheap right?
Yeah those can't be good
Is this the one you're talking about? Might be slightly out of my price range but I'll see if I can find one cheaper
I did find this, looks half decent?
That one yeah, well the V2 has some fixes over the V1 but either is pretty old now lol. I don't know what else there is in that price range though.
Tbh I grew tired of all the modeling options. Every preset has a bunch of effects on it already but there's some legacy software that you can use to overwrite them. The cleans are kinda nice but it's definitely not a metal machine.
Much better than a frontman tho
all these are kinda ass
I'm being real cheep, I realy can't aford anything great right now, the absolute max i'd be willing to pay is about £50
for learning I would really suggest getting something like this : https://nuxaudio.com/product/mightyplugpro/
or https://www.thomann.nl/mooer_hornet_modelling_combo_wh.htm ... it's only 30 above budget
Wait so how does that work? I plug it into the guitar and then plug in headphones to it?
yes
and you have all kinds of amp models and effects
bonus is that you can plug in powered speakers too ... and use it as an interface
it's actually pretty powerful ... i have the old one and still use it from time to time
oh ok, I might be reading into it wrong but if I got that and a cheep-ish speaker would I still get the same-ish efect?
yes
i even ran it into the aux of my car just for shits and giggles
Ok that actualy sounds realy good, I can't find where to buy it on the website, how much do they go for?
And would I be able to conect it to my computer? I do a little bit of stuff and being able to directly record audio would be nice
yes you can ... it doubles as an audio interface via USB ... you can record the unprocessed sound or the sound from the device itself
#home-studio-gear message here's a little demo I did using a tiny BT speaker
https://www.thomann.co.uk/nux_mighty_plug.htm thomann still has the old one for 59
Oh awesome that sounds actualy perfect for what I want to do, Tysm
the pro is 77
What's the diference between them? The older one is probably just about in my price range
pro has an upgraded engine, some more amps and cab emulations and such .. better drum machine etc
How do i control like the settings and stuff? It doesn't look like there's any buttons on it
i'd spend the extra 18 bucks ... just to have a newer device
there's one button to switch presets ... the presets themselves you can edit with a phone app
Ah ok, tysm
i'll have a look see if any are going for cheep 2nd hand but that looks like a realy solid option ty
Is this it? Never knew cedx did audio stuff
Is it realy worth it? the pro was going for £55 but was out of stock
it's just a bit better ... and has more features ... and probably still some support
but the mp2 will already sound WAY better than most 'shitbox' amps ... and have way more features
your average interface will set you back 50 to a 100 easy
my one compliant is that I have a perfect spot in the corner for the amp and can't put anything there now XD
i might buy a stand and put it there tho
tonight I will record a quick track using only tones from the mightyplug ... been itching to do that for a while
save the spot ... you'll might get something like a katana in the future
It's this like perfect cube of dead space XD I already have my ski stuff on the other wall and nothing cool to put there
Did you get this done? No pressure if not but it would be cool to see how it sounds with some of the diferent settings
Alas I couldn't find a suitable cable ... But I just bought one
Nice XD looking forward to it
Don't expect too much ... Just going to be a simple demo with some cleans and some chuggy stuff probably
If you can somehow find a Katana go in future that'd be great as a headphone amp
I quickly hacked some stuff together ... minimal post processing besides some EQ and my default mastering chain
the heavy guitars were kinda low in the mix so I upped them a tad
@split portal ^ although the drums and the virtual bass make a big impact ... It's still quite impressive from a small device like the MP2
That's awesome man, sounds great
Whoa man...
That sounds very good, man. Never had the MP2, I only have the MP3, but that sounds great. 👍
@upbeat yacht I have the Mighty Plug Pro (MPP), so if you have any questions about it, let me know. I would also recommend that over a shitty beginner amp any day of the week. You get so much more than with a beginner amp, which you'll quickly get tired of and have to sell again.
Nowadays for most new players, all you really need is a decent guitar, a practice amp like the MPP and a decent set of headphones/in ears and you're set for a very long time.
The MPP is currently 77 Pounds on Thomann, I think, so pretty much a no-brainer. Can't go wrong with it. 🤘
Awesome man, thanks so much for the help :) I found the pro going for £55 refurbished 2nd hand so I'll definitely be getting that. One question is though what sort of cables/adapters I'd need? Basically I'd like to be able to conect it to my pc, headphones (with a 3.5mm jack) and some half decent wired speaker I might get down the line.
Great choice!! 👍
Cables... If I remember correctly, the USB-C cable came in the box. So 2nd hand you might have to get a USB-C cable for it if it's not included.
Other than that, you don't need anything, really. The unit plugs straight into your guitar, you plug headphones into the unit, and bob's your uncle.
For connecting it to external speakers, any 3.5mm plug will do since you're plugging directly into the headphone jack/Aux port.
Another added benefit is that it is a TRRS port, meaning if you connect headphones with an attached Mic, you can record / stream guitar and voice at the same time. 😉
Oh awesome, what type of usb-c cable is it? I've got a 2m usb-c to usb-c and I think I've got a 1.5m usb-c to usb-a lying around somewhere
I think just a regular USB-C to USB-C cable will do. There's nothing special in the documentation mentioned. Just make sure it's both data and power carrying since you want to be able to charge the unit's battery. Other than that, nothing special, I think.
@upbeat yacht You can have a look here and download the manual already to familiarize yourself with the unit and its functions.
Also, bookmark this page for patches. I've tried a couple from this site and although I prefer creating my own, some of them were a good starting point for tone-shaping needs.

Free NUX Mighty Plug Pro Patches - Improve your sound with these free tone presets
As long as it's a data cable ...that's why my old micro USB cable didn't work
Does the pro have the ability to load custom IRs ?
The mp2 has but you have to patch the firmware so it kinda hacky
Yep. I use pretty much only custom IRs with it now. The stock ones are good, but not the greatest.
I might just get one myself then
Do it, man. About time you upgrade, heheheh.
Might go for a bigger upgrade ... Hotone stomp 2
Now there's a proper upgrade!! 👍
Not quite as plug and play though, but very good choice.
But first I need a new bass
What're you thinking?
Unrelated but this is the only speaker I have to hand right now XD might not be it lol
The middle one lol, I got it for free a while ago at some event XD
Probably won't sound that good but will do ... anything that has an aux works ...or simple computer speakers
Yeah, my monitor has some half decent speakers so i might see if I can get those conected
Computer speakers go for cheap at goodwill, or even some small stereo system
Shouldn't be too difficult.
As for good studio monitors for relatively cheap, I've heard good things about the PreSonus Eris E3.5.
Or the HeadRush FRFR Go is supposed to be quite nice as well...
Sorry for the ping bug are you sure it would fit in this port? Looks like it might not fit
It'll fit. 😉
My Ibanez has a port that's even more recessed than that, and it's no problem.
Cool ty
I've got those and they're great for the price
if you can get the slightly better ones they're worth it
No worries! 👍
Yes, that's what I keep hearing as well... I have to say they seem quite cheap, but everyone's raving about them... Great to hear it's not just a hype. 🙏
Thoughts? £65
Description is:
As title 1996 Squire Affinity Strat partscaster, black gloss hardwood body, gold coulered Wilkinson bridge, Ibanez pickups, replacement pickguard, chrome tuners, sold as is, couple of small dings to the body, all electrics work.
This is how I bought it, I didnt do any of the upgrades etc.
body is hardwood thickness 44mm-45mm
Use as is once set up or use for parts.
There are some better photos if y'all want?
@split portal sorry for the ping but you've been really helpful XD
I have no personal experience with that guitar, but I've not heard good things about it.
Honestly, a guitar for 65 Pounds? In 99.98% of the cases not worth it.
Really? Seemed like a good deal to me, what's bad about it?
Just the craftsmanship, bad tuners, etc. they were pumped out of the chinese factories at a blistering speed and sold for about 120 Pounds new.
It's cheap and from what people are saying badly made, sold in thousands and everywhere from toy stores to supermarkets.
Honestly, for a bit more you can get something a lot better
It's a 90s low end squier, there's been a lot of improvement since then
Exactly!
You could probably find a current squier for about the same price
Or probably not. Not here I think.
Although the pickup config does look cool haha
Fair enough, it did say the tuners were replaced tho, should I just keep looking for something else?
Yeah, I'd keep looking. I wouldn't take the chance of it being more frustrating to play than a new or sligly used modern Squier.
Or a Yamaha Pacifica 112. They're quite good for the money.
When it comes to guitars, you want to spend a bit more and then have something you can truly use for a while
What about this? £110 - looks like it's in brand new condition tbh
Looks nice!! What's the make/model
Comes with an amp (in theory could I use the might plug pro in the guitar and use the amp as a speaker???), strap, stand and cables
Squire strat by fender made in Indonesia
Apparently never been used
Much better deal!!
Indonesian manfactured ones are pretty good.
Nice :) looks pretty good to me
Thoughts on this slightly whacky idea?
"This beautiful Guitar in Sunburst colours has never been played nor even practiced on.
It comes complete with Raygar Guitar Stand, Fender Guitar Strap, Fender “Frontman 10G”
Amplifier and all the required cables and instruction manual, Boston BTU-150 Guitar String Tuner and a Guitar Chord Practice Tool.
A great instrument for the beginner and more accomplished player alike."
Yeah, looks nice. I'd probably ditch the amp and / or sell it right away since life is too short to torture yourself with cheap amps, but the rest sounds great!
But yes, you could use the amp as a speaker if you really need to, but guaranteed it won't sound as good as the MPP through headphones.
So hang on are you talking guitar > mpp > amp or just guitar > amp?
Guitar-->MPP--Amp
Cool, I'd probably need some wild bullshitery with cables and adapters but I doubt I could sell that amp for more than £30 so might not be worth the hassle XD
Well, it does make for a good paperweight... 😄
Who knows XD ill see, tysm for the help again lol
No worries! Lets us know how you like the guitar. 😉
footrest too
Yep, that's not a bad idea either. 👍
