#Are Jazzmasters really worth it?

Guys, when I bought my first guitar a little over a year ago, I got a superstrat with two humbuckers and a mahogany body. I really liked the guitar, it was perfect for the kind of sound I was looking for. Now I’m looking for a new guitar that can expand my tones and techniques while also giving me a more professional image as a guitarist.

So I came to the conclusion that I wanted to buy a Jazzmaster XD, which is by far my favorite guitar in terms of looks. I really love the sound of Arctic Monkeys, and I find the tones on Humbug and TBHC to be so mystical and deep. So I thought the combination of the Jazzmaster’s unique Fender pickups and its tremolo system would be a big step forward in my guitar journey.

However, the more I research the Fender Jazzmaster, the less interested I become. Almost every review I find says the bridge is terrible, it doesn’t stay in tune, it’s unreliable for live playing, it lacks sustain, it's not good for bends, and it doesn’t handle high gain or fuzz/overdrive very well.

That really discouraged me, because I used to believe this was the perfect guitar for me. I like to play heavier stuff (nothing really beyond numetal, maybe something around Metallica or Alice in Chains) but I also wanted to explore clean tones, and I thought the Jazzmaster would be a good middle ground between those two worlds.

I expected it to give me pickups that don’t lean too far in any one direction, allowing for more tonal variety. I liked the idea of a big solid body for sustain, and the tremolo system as a way to gain experience with floating bridges. But apparently, I was wrong about all of that.

I even looked into alternative bridges like the Staytrem or Mastery, but I’m not sure if those would really fix the string issues.

What do you guys recommend?

U could lock the bridge and it would probably stay in tune better

would I still be able to use the tremolo even after locking the bridge?

No

#

Locking a trem makes it a hard tail

#

Although u could lock it in a way where it could only go down then u would still have a trem

are jazzmasters worth it? if you're asking this then you probably don't feel strongly enough about em, so no they're not worth it for you

#

im just confused

#

though

#

i dont know why you specifically just locked onto the jazzmaster

#

when something like a basic HSS strat just sounds like more up your alley

#

more stable tremolo, wider range of tones, easier to find, and there's a reason why it's most peoples "do it all" guitar

#

why dont you just get a guitar who'se tremol system is more stable

The main point of a jazzmaster is looks and the pickups if you dont like the trem you can either lock it or buy a baseplate without it. If you really want a good trem get another guitar

This is a very personal question and the only way to find out is to actually play one

For me personally, the Jazzmaster is my favorite guitar ever

a bass VI also has that shape

or a Harmony Silhouette

#

if you want something cheaper ... the gear4music subbrand Hartwood has some nice looking ones too

I just realized that the best way to have a well constructed and good looking jazzmaster is to custom shop one

JM doesn't really excel for stuff like Metallica, AIC, FNM.. For indie, experimental, postrock etc they are great. But this is all because of how the traditional JM bridge reacts, all the "cons" you mentioned are specifically what's enthusiast liked about JM, what's unique to this guitar.

#

If looks are all that matter I suggest getting one with a TOM bridge or hardtail, but those are solely JM by name with none of its character. Also its probably easier to finda better guitar at that price which are better for your purpose,

Join me while I assess and discover this little gem of a guitar.

I couldn't reviewing this Sire Larry Carlton. How well will this hold up amongst the current quality of guitars? More importantly though, Is it a nice playing instrument at reasonable cost? Let's find out.

Hi everyone. I'm a luthier based in Devon, England. I make electric guitar...
