the thing i struggle with is knowing what to change. Because i can adjust tone on my guitar, both my drive pedals, and the eq on my amp

Keep one thing variable...play with that ... See what it does , change the variable ...rinse & repeat

Or put everything at noon on the amp ...see how changing your drive setting influence the sound
