I assume that the ability to sound vaguely similar to bands you like will help you feel like the journey isn't impossible or pointless.

I like the following bands: Anberlin, Bongo Chico, Brave Future, Breaking Benjamin, Citizen Soldier, Demon Hunter, Disciple, Fight the Fury, FM Static, for KING & COUNTRY, Gable Price & Friends, Good Weather Forecast, Hawk Nelson (only the older stuff), Judge & Jury, Kutless, Manafest, Memphis May Fire, Micah Ariss, Nine Lashes, Owl City, RED, Relient K, Run Kid Run, Satellites & Sirens, Sent by Ravens, Set for the Fall, Seventh Day Slumber, Skillet, Spoken, Stellar Kart, Stephen Stanley, Switchfoot, The Protest, Twenty One Pilots, We as Human, and Wolves at the Gate.

After telling ChatGPT that, it recommended I buy a Yamaha PAC112V MSS guitar. Is it full of beans? Or would that be a good first guitar if I were like, somewhat serious about getting better at playing?

ionic cape
#

I recommend the Yamaha Pacifica 112 aswell

#

its very versatile

#

and good for the budget

#

what is ur budget

#

i dont think there is a "mss" version of it tho

lethal shell
#

i barely know the terminology anyway

ionic cape
#

best beginner combo is probably Yamaha Pacifica 112 and then a used Boss Katana MK2 or mk3

lethal shell
#

that's what chatGPT said

#

thx

#

Excellent...

Next: How do you learn songs the way you want to play and not just the common first-timer songs? can you? or is that petty?

and when can I expect to play through a song i can be proud of in front of people? yk... like, show off my skills?

ionic cape
#

also dont rely on chatgpt for everything guitar related

lethal shell
#

no no no

ionic cape
#

if i wanna learn a song

#

like something thats tricky

#

What i do is try to play it first, get the hang of it

#

by then im probably still sloppy

#

so I play it slowly by adjusting the playback time on youtube

lethal shell
#

ah

ionic cape
#

go up by .5 every 3 attempts

#

eventually til i go to full speed

#

use the slider at the top

#

but thats usually for solos

lethal shell
#

would you consider yourself a pro at the ones you can do FASTER than 1x lol?

lethal shell
#

awesome

#

i have so much respect for you proficient players

ionic cape
#

Thank you

lethal shell
#

I am one of those kids who was accidentally taught to quit things that were hard and just stick to what i was good at so this is a mysterious and NOT easy endeavor but I've always wanted to be able to do this and I'm withering away as a lonely and bored teenager at the moment, i need something to throw myself at

ionic cape
#

💪

lethal shell
#

agreed

ionic cape
#

dont push urself TOO hard ofc but

#

just do stuff thats like slightly harder and so on

lethal shell
#

yeah

ionic cape
#

Outside of learning songs tho

#

you need to practice with like a metronome

lethal shell
#

actually that leads me to another question

#

there is such a thing as freestyling right

#

like riffs and just messing around for fun

ionic cape
#

yeah

#

improvisation

lethal shell
#

after you get really good

ionic cape
#

yeah

#

just learn some scales

#

learn how to make ur guitar sing w said scales

#

phrasing

#

learning scales is like learning words

#

learning how to phrase is liek learning how to form sentences

lethal shell
#

i see

#

funny story -- when I was little i did this ridiculous thing where I'd perfect one sound before going on to learn a different one, when i was a baby. ironically that's a lot like guitar from what I've gathered

ionic cape
#

here, il lgive u a playlist to watch

#

this helped me ALOT

#

when i was starting out

#

what do u know about guitar so far

#

highly recommend u

#

u write stuff w him

#

recommend wtching w out skipping aswell

lethal shell
# ionic cape what do u know about guitar so far

yeah... so i vaguely understand the first 5 minutes of most music theory vids lol but after that I'm lost and I learn kinda fast if i am like... in my element. YT vids aren't my faves for learning but i CAN learn so I'll try! lol.

#

basically what i learned today from vids i watched was this... there are 12 notes, but more exist on diff. octaves. Keys are like, basically which of the notes on an octave sound good when played together, and there's a specific pattern to figure that out that, if you're looking at a piano, you go 2 whole notes over, then a half note, then three wholes, and then a half... or something like that. and if you play a particular combination of notes within a key, it's a chord, and chord + different chord + different chord + different chord + different chord + different chord + different chord = a song, once you plan it out and stuff.

#

i think

#

that's what I got

#

and then i was like "oh, i get it, therefore i quit"

#

probs unwise but I'll come back when i need to know more... and I know I'll need to know more

ionic cape
#

it makes it very

#

overwhelming

ionic cape
#

is very good

#

i recommend

#

watch that one video first

#

then

#

learn a couple songs

#

that u like

#

and when u REALLY want to

#

watch the next one

lethal shell
#

noted ||pun intended||

#

hehe

ionic cape
lethal shell
#

thank you so much for all this

ionic cape
#

of course man

#

remember

#

dont overwhelm urself with information

#

just enjoy the instrument

#

play what u wanna play

lethal shell
#

yeah

ionic cape
#

most "theory" are more like guides

#

if u ever feel like u wanna quit

#

just go here and as for advice

#

ask*

lethal shell
#

i am a learny person tho so this is lowkey fun until it gets tricky or put into practice. i just have to have faith in the method and eventually I'll get there with enough dedication

#

what's a good end goal

ionic cape
#

For me its to play like allan holdsworth lol

lethal shell
#

should it be within a time limit or should it just be 'get HERE at all costs'

ionic cape
#

Im not too sure

#

personally i dont do it within a time limit

#

since like if u surpass that time limit

#

youll proly think ur not good enough

#

everyone learns at different speeds and everyone learns differently

lethal shell
#

like let's say (and i know it's corny) i wanna get to be able to play the Free Bird riff lolol, do i just go till i get there orrr

ionic cape
#

Learn some stuff fthat u need to learn before learning the solo

#

like

#

how to bend ykwim?

lethal shell
#

yeah

ionic cape
#

maybe learn some solos that are easier first

#

before going to freebird

#

some riffs

#

til ur confident

lethal shell
#

right but once I can get to the point where learning freebird maybe... takes a reasonable amount of time

ionic cape
#

yeah itll take abit

#

the fun part about learning songs is that

#

ur not only learning the song

#

ur also learning technique

lethal shell
#

like once I have the skills to make it a two month endeavor instead of like taking three years and giving up by month 4

#

yeah

ionic cape
#

yuh

lethal shell
#

I need to learn to relish the journey

ionic cape
#

also i have a VERY important tip

#

remember to take breaks

#

Breaks are just as important as practice

#

sometimes throughout the week

lethal shell
#

good advice

ionic cape
#

i take like a one day break

#

and afte rthat break i play so much better

#

its like going to the gym

#

you dont constantly strain ur muscles

#

u need a break

lethal shell
#

yeah

ionic cape
#

same w guitar

#

u need a break so ur brain can process muscle memory and stuff

lethal shell
#

breaks are great

ionic cape
#

yup

#

very helpful

lethal shell
#

i know my dad used to teach himself stuff by basically cramming or something and then NOT THINKING ABOUT IT for a day and then when he went to pull up the mental info, it was all neatly compartmentalized in his brain

#

and he did well on tests and stuff

#

btw i am curious

ionic cape
#

very good for ur brain t take breaks

lethal shell
#

is musical ability a gift or is it just something you need to work on

ionic cape
#

i mean

#

mayube if ur born with like

#

perfect pitch sure

#

but honestly

lethal shell
#

i hoped that would be the case

ionic cape
#

Technique etc

#

is ALL practice

#

i used to be so bad at guitar

#

like i thought i had no talent

#

but then i realized

#

talent isnt rlly real when it comes to guitar

#

its all practice

#

sure people will learn faster than u

#

but people learn differently

#

just because u learn slower doesnt make u any less better

lethal shell
#

right! yeah.

ionic cape
#

dont compare urself to other peoples progress, compare urself to what u used to be

lethal shell
#

i have always struggled with awkward pacing in life

ionic cape
#

thats normal

#

but progress isnt a straight line

lethal shell
#

either being too fast in one area or too slow elsewhere

ionic cape
#

its all ups and downs

lethal shell
#

i kinda just take it as it comes

ionic cape
#

i see

#

its normal tho

#

you got this man

lethal shell
#

Thanks!!!

ionic cape
#

also another tip is sometimes

#

dont rely on motivation to practice

lethal shell
#

heck no

ionic cape
#

its a somewhat bad habit

#

yeah

#

again same w like working out

#

you go even if u dont want to

#

but yk after the practice youi feel very good

lethal shell
#

I am trying to get more conscientious and i am hoping that this endeavor helps with that

#

I am like a platypus

#

i don't do much

#

kinda common for teens but I wanna get ahead of it

ionic cape
#

soemtimes u just wanna

#

rot in bed

#

im 16

#

i do that all the time

lethal shell
#

ah

#

fun

ionic cape
#

but

#

u gott alearn to discipline

lethal shell
#

for real

#

I'm also homeschooled so this is kinda an effort to make the isolation more bearable

ionic cape
#

if you can, maybe try to find a music teacher

#

maybe he can hook u up with some gigs

#

and stuff

lethal shell
#

gigs? like chances to play?

ionic cape
#

eventually maybe try to find a band

ionic cape
#

play at like bars or whatever

lethal shell
#

that'd be...

#

something

ionic cape
#

its good to get urself out there eventually

lethal shell
#

i never considered that

#

I am a mega introvert... I would maybe sing... i do it sometimes around friends but like idk if i'd ever sing so people would appreciate it

ionic cape
#

i used to be like that too

#

honestly

#

my first gig was so ass

#

i was sweating

#

i could not play properly

lethal shell
#

lol

ionic cape
#

but yk

#

the more u do it

#

u get less nervous

lethal shell
#

you do jazz right? so do you sing AND play at the same time?

lethal shell
#

ah

ionic cape
#

i play

#

yup

lethal shell
#

i always wondered how people play AND sing at the same time

#

I can't even play without my eyes glued to the guitar

ionic cape
#

thats normal

lethal shell
#

I'll get there

ionic cape
#

its all muscle memory

#

yup

lethal shell
#

yea

#

can i confess something tho about my first guitar

ionic cape
#

sure

lethal shell
#

i tried to paint it, and make it look cool

#

and i just ruined it

#

it was so ugly and i didn't know how to reassemble it

#

😭

lethal shell
#

why

reef plank
#

They’re good

#

And they are used by alternative/indie bands

ionic cape
#

i wouldnt get a jazzmaster personally

lethal shell
#

can i get as heavy as a rock song tho

reef plank
#

Mabye one with p90s

#

Of course you can lol

ionic cape
#

pacifica is more value for money

reef plank
#

Jazzmaster are great for overdriven tones

ionic cape
#

u get more guitar for the money

lethal shell
#

i have no clue what I'm talking about so you are teaching me stuff as you talk

ionic cape
#

these r jazzmasters

#

i think the pacifica would be better value

lethal shell
#

ah

ionic cape
#

u get more guitar for the price ur paying

reef plank
#

But it’s just a Strat copy

lethal shell
#

that seems to be the case

ionic cape
reef plank
#

But strats aren’t really a guitar meant for heavy music

ionic cape
#

bro

#

it has humbuckers

lethal shell
#

chatgpt said they had M HSS pickups and that M HSS pickups were good(?)

reef plank
#

Oh

lethal shell
#

HSS

#

yea HSS

#

i think

ionic cape
#

HSS

lethal shell
#

HSS

#

yes

#

just checked

#

my bad

#

so that's a thing that they have, idk if that's good or not

ionic cape
#

its very good

#

pacificas are very good

#

versatile

lethal shell
#

i figure it'll last longer too

#

apparently Yamaha is like really good for cheaper guitars?

#

and longevity?

ionic cape
#

yuppp

#

one of the bnnest for the price

#

best(

#

best*

lethal shell
#

sweeet

#

idea

#

what if i get a job at a music store

ionic cape
#

i mean go for it

lethal shell
#

even tho i dunno the first thing about music other than my preferences?

ionic cape
#

uh

#

theyll proly have requirements

lethal shell
#

fair enough

#

ik some places like it when you have zero experience tho

#

probably not the same way

lethal shell
#

what is the word music-people use to describe what pedals do, assuming pedals basically modify the input sound in a very particular way so that the overall noise is like, different?

like, what is it called when the sound changes or becomes distinct?

and what are all the different ways to do that?

#

a more relevant but still-related question...

i have a dopey little Sqier amp, is that gonna do the Yamaha justice or should I save up for the damaged-but-therefore-cheaper-and-still-fully-functional Boss Katana MkII i found online for cheap?

ionic cape
#

and why is it damaged

ionic cape
#

i guess tone shaping?

#

also i think u should spend abit more on a used katana that DOES work

#

itll be better in the long run

lethal shell
lethal shell
#

don't think so

#

it looked like a sophisticated seller tho

#

or like it wasn't even used and the business wanted to still sell it for what it was worth

ionic cape
#

i see

#

u should request for a sound demo

#

to make sure

lethal shell
#

I might. It'll be a while before I can afford it if I buy a Yamaha guitar tho
