It may be a classic but you can’t really go wrong with the ts9 (or similar ones), really versatile, works great for crunch and slight od, all the way to metal, I also really enjoy using the boss sd1 to boost metal amps, I wouldn’t buy really exotic/unique pedals as a first, you’re better off buying something that’s good at mostly everything so you get to know what you like, and then buy specific pedals

Really depends on what you play now doesn't it ?
I agree with @prisma linden that you can't really go wrong with a tubescreamer type pedal, but it doesn't quite cut it if you want to play really heavy music

I feel like something with a moderate amount of gain like a Marshall really gets into thrash realm with a ts9
