I’m thinking about getting a multi effects pedal to upgrade my rig because I have an old boss ME-70 multi effects pedal and it’s not great. How was your experience with the Line 6 Helix floor pedal boards and did the amp models sound really close to the real thing (enough for it to be negligible) or is it worth all the extra money to get the high end amps/pedals to get “the sound”? Do the models feel like a real amp when you play them?

This is an excellent question. Great that you want to take the next step after a ME-70
The Line 6 Helix will absolutely blow your mind... IF you know how to dial it in correctly. You'll have an even better time if you're running it through an actual power amp and speakers
Something Helix excels in is getting a realistic impulse/attack/feel from hitting your strings. Even in the slightest way
Yea I’ve heard great things about em. I need my rig to grow with me so that’s why I’m deciding between this or another guitar😂. I play at my church and this would make prepping for songs so much easier cause I could save all my presets
Oh yeah dude. I have friends that run Helix at church actually. Perfect for lush reverbs and light Overdrive
Also, regarding your question about do you need high end amps/pedals to get the sound
A thousand times: No, you do not
Everytime I see someone using a helix they always have some ambient tone on😂
Helix will solve all your problems, the only remaining variable is how it sounds vs Fractal Axe FX/FM3, Quad Cortex, or what have you
at that point it's semantics
Yea I know you don’t, just curious how close the helix can really get
No one can tell whenever I play 🤷♂️
I run a lot of 5150 and Revv Red tones
Yea, I listened to a comparison video and I definitely liked the quad cortex amp captures better than the helix
But the helix only has models anyways
I think Quad Cortex is better at cab sims/IRs out of the box
But if you add your own in, and EQ for fine tuning
You'll be very surprised haha
Yea, that’s what I noticed
Oh yea I’m sure
"out of the box" is the key phrase haha
Yea lol
I could make a POD HD500X sound good
So it really comes down to what you enjoy building tones on!
Yea, I can make my boss pedal sound good but it’s a hassle and it takes work
Helix, to me, has the most fun user interface
You can even buy a Helix LT if you wanna save a little (you probably won't use 100% of helix anyways, chances are)
Rhett Shull actually mentioned that the helix’s effects are amazing
I was going to buy an LT if I decided to get one
There’s no difference anyways besides it being easier to see stuff
You can also just build tones from your pc
Unless you prefer to work on the unit itself
That’s what I was actually excited about. And being able to download presets for songs from people like Worship Tutorials
I probably would some of the time
I think you have everything you need to decide now hahaha
Not that I'm trying to sway you or anything 😛
I'm a Helix fan through and through
Yea, you clearly like the pedal a lot lol
It’s just me considering buying it over a guitar that might help inspire me more and get me to play more. I’m a senior and trying to save money for college so I don’t have to much to spend on gear lol
I have to pick and choose
Ahhhhh that's different then, what do you want in a guitar
I mean if i were you, i'd just pick a decent mid-range guitar, and go for the Helix
Just for the sheer variety you get
Well I’ve already upgraded to a PRs se custom 24 but I didn’t know much about my preferences then. I was going to make a pilgrimage to Sweetwater and find one I really like and bring it home lol.
Oh if you like the SE Custom 24, just hang on to that man, it's a great guitar
My budget is $1000 max. I’m not going over that
you have tonssss of options
Yea it is, the tuning doesn’t hold great sometimes and the G string ugh.
It’s cause it’s a Les Paul style guitar
It could be that if you change the way you wrap the string on the post, it could help with tuning stability
But I wasn’t going to sell it I was just going to keep it and get another one. It’s nice to have verity
Also, if you put graphite in the nut (like pencil lead), it'll help the string not bunch up in it (which causes tuning stability issues)
I could try that
You could also just flat out replace the nut. Hahaha
I’ll try that next time I change strings
True lol
Get a nice bone one, or graphite like a TUSQ
Never having tuning issues related to the nut ever again
Now if it's the 2-point trem bridge... that's a whole other issue (but it's very unlikely)
It's like incredibly unlikely
Yea, I wanted to get a T-style guitar cause all the music I listen to is modern country (like 17 hour playlist on repeat lol). So I wanted something that reflected that
It’s a 6 point floating bridge
Oh it's a floating bridge... that makes even more problems haha
Yea, I figured that’s why lol. Floating means it moves both ways right?
Yeah if it moves both ways yep
You probably will need a little setup too, on top of those little upgrades/improvements i mentioned above
Honestly if i was in the market for a tele
I'd just go with fender
something like one of those Nashville player series or something, just an honest to God tele
with a little bit of extra kick, with that middle pickup
Yea, I like ceramic pickups better honestly, alnico sound too pure to me. There’s not much going on besides just a really smooth sound from the string
I think what matters most is the neck profile you like, the rest you can find in pretty much any brand that does Teles haha
I like a bit more punch and grit in the tone
Yeah if that's the sound you prefer, yep
But you can find those specs in nearly any brand for sub $1000
the neck profile is the real choice
between brands
and everything that comes with that, radius, etc
I did a shootout with tells at a guitar center and I like the squire bullet guitar’s sound the best lol. Would have been almost perfect if it had more output
I was looking at a G&L ASAT classic actually
Dude, honestly, there are some killer Squiers out there just existing like it's nobody's business lol
Technically still an authentic tele
G&L yep still authentic technically
Yea, I was thinking about doing a parts caster and using some of those pickups😂
Technically😂
Partscasters are like a rite of passage for anyone physically modding anything in the electronics of their guitar haha
Gotta give it a go
I'm a huge fan of HSS
Yea, my dad was never big on guitars but he did build his own PRs. My dad and grandpa are geniuses when it comes to building things especially with stuff like wood and electronics. They’re engineers lol
Yea I really want to. Maybe over the summer if I don’t find “the guitar” at SweetwaterSound lol
Point being I got some people who can help me not screw anything up
Nice dude! Definitely ask them for help if you need it, because chances are you will need it haha
Electronics can get confusing the first time around
and for installing components, it's nice to ask if you're afraid of damaging anything
Yea, I know how soldering works and stuff. I could easily teach myself but it helps to have guidance lol
Soldering for a stratocaster is way easier. You can just take the pickguard off and get to work
For literally any other guitar where the electronics are in the back... it's like playing operation with your guitar
hahahaha
Yea but the layout on teles are easier
so make sure you protect the body
True lol
Yes very true
Also you’ll need to learn about wiring diagrams! Different ways to wire different kinds of selectors and # of knobs
Also series vs parallel for pickups
Yea, I’m not too worried about that. I am planning on going to college for mechanical engineering so I think I should be able to figure it out
Hopefully😂
Yea that too
Well if you just buy the guitar with the config you want you just disconnect the pickups and add the new ones haha
Building a circuit from scratch is where ya need to know
True, the player 2s feel amazing so I could just swap the pickups on those
Yea true
Yeah do what is easiest and takes the least time tbh so you can get to playing sooner
But that would be expensive lol. Couldn’t get the line 6 If I did that lol
I will say, a Nashville tele would be sick to have lol
Maybe stick with the PRS, do the setup and things mentioned above to improve stability
Then get a helix
Yea, the PRs is fine as is. It’s just my growing desire for more gear talking. I’m starting to see how people will collect like 20 guitars lol
It gets addicting yes hahaha
