I'm kind of a newbie if it comes to gear so i came here. I really wanna mix up some genres (Polyphia styled riffs+Djent/Thall) and can't figure out which guitar should i buy.
For the record, i prefer 6 string guitars and really dig the aesthetic of Polyphia (e.g. TOD10). I was thinking of getting either an Ibanez JEMJR or ICHI10. If any of ya'll got better recommendations, i would be thankful if you let me know about your opinion. Thanks c:
(btw my budget is around a 1000$)

Ibanez RG550 or Charvel DK24 if you want something more like the AZ models Tim and Scott have right now
Charvel (left), Tim's new sig model (right)
bro i thought that they were thr same fpr a sec
also on the charvel, what is that little silver switch
to switch between parallel and series on the pickups
what the flip does that mean lol
series is how most humbuckers are wired, parallel separates the two coils so both pickups in the humbucker are sent through the output
@jovial snow can prob explain better if he sees this
r u a newbie when it comes to guitar as a whole
cus djent and thall regularly use 8 strings for a reason
that low tuning and scale length
ur not gonna mix polyphia shit which is almost all in E standard with another genre that’s essentially an octave lower in tuning, on the same guitar
jemjr sucks, and i dont see why the ichi10 is even considered here
if i were you, id just get a good 6 string for $1000 and save up later for some shit for thall if need be
or get a 7 string with a long enough length on the low side
i know that, i mainly use virtual drop pedals to achieve these tunings
woah, those two are nearly identical
it's a shame that it doesn't have a simillar inlay
ik the ichi10 is a single coil so it doesn't fit here but why does the JEMJR suck?
i know that it doesn't sound as good as a real 7/8 string+ i'd have to get thicker string gauges
i regret that i didn't explain this earlier cuz it looks like i'm an idiot
i actually mean that the guitar needs a lot of clarity in it's sound
+that charvel that someone sent COULD be my final pick
the jem jr sucks bc the tremolo is made of zinc which is really soft and eventually you won't be able to return to pitch
i would pick the charvel too tbh
i mean, people say that it's good
maybe it's bad when you can compare it to much better gear
which costs a lot more
but is it bad for the price?
@jovial snow hope u understand 😭
But it isn’t good
No it’s terrible for the price
yo, but why?
material choice isn’t good for what it’s designed to do
but just like wood on the body or overall
i think most guitars in this price range have similar specs
the trem is the issue here
zinc alloy is soft, soft materials are not meant to continuously rub against metal under tension
which is what occurs with use of the tremolo
i'm sure most customers don't update their review when the trem stops staying in tune
anecdotally i have a family member who owns an ibanez with the same trem and he decided to block it since it wouldn't stay in tune
i mean, my friend has a much cheaper ibanez, abuses tf out of the trem and it doesn't go out of tune that easily
i myself wouldn't use the trem that much so i don't think it would be a problem
I get that you might wanna get best value for money, but most of the time the only way you’re gonna do that is by paying more… which sounds silly but you really do notice the difference. The charvel (it’s depending on what you like) will probably have better pickups, quality control and therefore feel better than something cheaper. This is even without mentioning the tremolo. I know other people have explained but when you have a trem made out of soft metal alloys, they don’t hold tuning as well meaning you’re gonna be out of tune way more often with the Ibanez because the metal used on the fr1000 is just better. Fr1000s are used for models almost double the price, since they’re one of the closest things you can get to the OFR.
If you want a good deal try second hand. I found a limited edition Matt heafy guitar £500 near me in mint condition the other day - it’s just a matter of looking around
transpose one whole octave down??? does it even sound good
also you literally miss out on the high strings doing transpose with a 6string
save a bit for a cheaper 8 string later
used dillion/jackson 8s are like 150-200 and replace pickups for another 100
i think it sounds pretty decent, if i changed the string gauge then maybe i could get it to sound like an actual 7/8 string
but getting a baritone may be a better option
😭 youre still gonna miss 1/2 strings
you just get to choose what strings to miss
and for technical stuff like polyphia you NEED all standard strings at least
contrary to popular belief djent isnt 00000000
so getting a whole 8 string just to confuse myself and not using the rest of the fretboard when i switch to djent
especially thall where the entire catch is low strings -> high erratic notes -> repeat
yeah, that could work with a transposed 6 string/baritone guitar
it takes like 10 minutes to understand a 8 string fretboard after switching from a 6
this also comes with the issue of low scale length
itll sound absolutely muddy
loathe yes
and 8 strings are even more expensive
more expensive than 6s yes but you can def get things for under 1k
i guess so
the tremolo sucks dick
and its mediocre all around
ur paying extra for the looks
its not actually in the same tier as other 500 dollar ibanezes
if i werre u, just get a Charvel or a Vola or something, 24 frets, tremolo
if i could ask, what guitars do you have? (what price range to be exact)
i mean, you're probably used to way more expensive gear
no its literally bad compared to things in the same price range
charvels in the 5-600 range use like gotohs far better
im use to good gear, not expensive gear, and the jemjr is objectively just bad value
not some like
i actually decided to go to a guitar center next week
“oh u own better gear so ur use ti better stuff”
no
it’s genuinely just not that good
imma test the JEMJR and Charvel
if u look up jemjr forums, half the posts, most of them, are people MODDING their jem and asking what to make it better
and some 7 strings
its not that good of a guitar
charvels just the far better optijon
and the price reflects it
the jemjr is effectively an ibanez gio wrapped up ti look good and sold at ibanez standard range prices
for proof that i wasnt exaggerating
yeah, unfortunately you can get really deceived by looks
i just looked up “jemjr forum” nothing about modding and repair, yet most of the posts are about just that
lmao😭
thats the point
a lot of the jemjr buyers are beginners who just think it looks pretty
but its made of the cheapest parts possible
cuz it looks pretty😭
easy money
watchu think about getting a squier jazzmaster baritone?
i dont see how that fits ur polyphia thing
i think it could be a good replacement cuz it's good for really low tunings
sound clarity i guess??
i mean, can't you tune a baritone to e standard?
u can
but whats the point
ur also making playing more difficult, both from string tension as well as the neck
the frets are more spaced apart
just get a multi scale 7 string if u want the best of both worlds
better yet
a multi scale 8 string
youd basically have e standard and Drop E at the same time
polyphia and djent basically
polyphia also used 8 strings in Drop E on their new album anyway
yeah i think on one song
or more, i can't tell
more
theyve bene using 8 strings fir years anyway
look but dont touch is an old song
chimera, look but dont touch, bloodbath, reverie, probably some more
yeah, maybe getting more strings is the way to go
the only downside to 8 strings is some players dont like how they feel
theyre bigfer
wider neck
etc
i need to grab one and test it in a guitar store
then i will be able to tell
actually my first pick was the Ibanez RGD71ALMS-BAM
whatever the case
dont get jemjr
the rg450dx is just a better version of it
and priced the same
yes
if youre gonna use the floating trem then the jem jr sucks
note that only the newer one with edge zero ii is better
the old one uses the same standard dl trem and sucks
so if you buy used then keep an eye out
the difference is very noticeable (left is edge zero ii and right is standard dl)
nightmare is another
theres an ibanez 8 string for 300 bucks
genuine question: does that mean you only use 7 out of 30 guitars or that you only still own 7 out of the 30 guitars that youve had
scratch that its 450 new
but still cheap
solar/esp/jackson/dillion/agile/ibanez
i also thought about the Ibanez RGDMS8-CSM
that ones good
theres also ibanez axion label if you want a 7
yea it seems good
if your budget is 1000 bucks then id suggest using all 1000 of it
no reason to cheap out
ye ye, that was my first pick
imma decide when i go to a guitar store
yeah, i'll try to get it out of my system lol
i mean like if you really like the inlay you could just buy a tree of life sticker
it goes on the fretboard and kinda works
wouldn't these scratch off easily?
i dont really know, ive just heard of them
id suggest doing some research and buying a good quality one tho
yeah, buying a cheap version from aliexpress is a bad decision
otherwise getting that glue residue out of your fretboard would probably be a nightmare
i'd get someone to set it up for me
truee
you dont need that. its just any normal sticker. nothing fancy
just make sure you go for a good brand that wont rip off or anything
id suggest looking further into it though idk how good of a choice they are
30 owned throughout the years
7 i have right nkw
i buy and sell a lot
ah ok
yeah i need to search for the right one
i actually prefer the tree of death inlay but idk if anyone made stickers like this
also @velvet valley if you have the money you could do a full custom inlay
@jovial snow u think that may be a good decision?
idk if manufacturers would do the TOL or TOD though
naah, i don't wanna spend too much money
i think stickers look tacky
and its kinda obvious
but thats just me
theres no harm in stickers
yea thats why i said pick a good quality one
they look slightly more real than a cheap one off aliexpress or amazon
wouldn't they get easily scratched off?
imo you could buy one and put it on your next string change and try it off
yeah yah
no reason to put them on right away
i dont really think so
if you have sweaty hands depending on the material of the sticker it might wear it away
and your playing style would also affect it
i think more playing would actually set them in more as youd be pressing down on those areas a lot more
I wouldn’t say a baritones the right option
