Looking for a pedal that does a plexi type overdrive/distortion, had a few on my radar such as: Friedman BE-OD, Nux Fireman, Joyo Uzi, Xotic SL drive and the EHX Glove. I like to keep things cheap so the EHX glove was looking really good, but sound wise i prefered the Xotic SL drive and the Friedman, not sure if I can dial in the EHX glove to sound like those as I have not demoed them irl next to each other before. Any recommendations? Any thoughts?

I’ve heard that the Friedman is hands down the best one
Same but its also 300 dollars so can't really afford such a exp pedal
i have the friedman its pretty good
its more like hot rodded marshall higher gain british tones
hence the name be-od
it was modelled after the friedman be100
but its definately still very versatile cuz of that tight knob and the internal gain pot
i also run it at 18v for more headroom
You can do that?
How similar would the Ehx glove and the friedman would sound?
not very similar id say the friedman is worth the extra money
I guess I’ll save up and try to get it used
A guy is selling it for 140usd used and brand new here would be around 230usd
Also would the Deluxe version be worth over the standard?
Or maybe a dirty Shirley?
are you looking for an amp or just od/dist?
i run a sansamp tri-od, which has a ‘British’ mode on it on my board for the Marshall sound, and it also has a Mesa and Fender drive in it. they’re somewhat hard to come by, and if you only want the british part you can get a sansamp character series british
just a drive pedal though, not a power amp
pretty sure its emulating a 70s metal-face
Why did you have it on your radar then
just the OD/Dist
the friedman amps are like way outta my league
just for frame of reference of a sound i liked, but i found it quite cheap used so i could maybe cough up enough for it
if you don’t need to power a cab off it, check out the TRI-OD if you can find one or the British
sure you can find some sound demos online
about $200 AUD, so whatever that is in your currency
the British has more controls on it, 3 band EQ, and a character option. both have level and drive
comes with greenback speaker emulation, tri-od does speaker emulation as well but don’t know what speakers
tri-od has balanced out for going to PA, but don’t know about the British
it’s 1/4” balanced not XLR
sure i will give it a listen
wdym by power a cab off it?
like monitor speaker?
it isn’t speaker out, only regular guitar signal. you’d need to run it into the front of a head, then out to a cab.
it’s not an amp, just a drive pedal essentially
i never realised you could put pedals in between cab and speaker
you can’t. sorry if what I said was unclear. you need to go into the input of a amplifier head, just like you would with other pedals. it’s not an amplifier in a pedal, just a regular pedal.
the amplifier head powers the cabinet, you run your signal into the amplifier head
speaker out as in 1/4” speaker cable, transmitting signal and power
ohhhhh i get it
sorry if my title was a little confusing but what i meant by plexi in the box was more of like a drive that sounded like a plexi
nah it was clear, I assumed you just needed the drive but sometimes people are looking for pedal sized amps to power a cabinet
is that possible? I thought lunchbox amps are the smallest you could get
EHX 44 magnum, Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 and a bunch of others. they’re not gonna be super loud valve amps but I’ve got a 44 magnum as my backup of backup amp
wtf how does something so small generate 44watts
wont it melt or smth
no, solid state amps can be much smaller than valve amps
they still get hot over time, but not having an EL84 heating up to 200 degrees after you turn it on helps
i see. I dont get solid state vs tube wattage tho, if they are both outputting 20w why is tube so much louder
valve amps are usually very efficient, and the way a valve amp distorts at higher volumes is perceived as an increase in volume; whereas solid state distortion is perceived as sounding awful
the 3;1 ratio applies to perceived louder loudness, but even then two 100w valve amps can sound different in volume
ah i see thanks, still wonder how they measure wattage values for both amps cuz numbers dont lie...
anyways looking at all the prices I think the Dirty Shirley OD would be the best. Found one used locally for USD123 and it does have the sounds I liked
yes definitely imo
it fixes the main issue of the regular beod which is the lack of mids and getting lost in the mix
there is a mid knob
also its insanely versatile if you dont have other dist/od pedals
you can just turn down the internal gain pot of the low gain channel to get a perfect low gain drive tone and use the other one for high gain
I see. But from demos is till find low gain still pretty.. gainy. I went with the Dirty Shirley in the end. Able to get lower gain plus a mids knob without needing the space or cash for the BEOD deluxe. But ears don’t lie, when I get it I’ll report back
