If you don't know what genre of music you want to play (although you can play most genres on most guitars), get an HSS guitar, I think the guide in this server recommended a squier affinity

Lighter things (distortion wise) and a singlecoil on all 3 positions would be fine

They're supposed to be the cheaper line of the same guitars basically. Ironically Squire usually has better deals in general spec-wise and sometimes even better QC.
