#Epiphone Les Paul or a Yamaha Pacifica 012?

Can't decide between em

hallow tree
#

Would be good to know which epiphone you mean, but if youre a beginner it might honestly not be a bad idea to just buy what you feel looks the best.
If you can, definitely try both and see how they feel in your lap and if they feel comfortable.
Maybe google something like „single coil demo“ and see if you like that kind of „glassy“ tone, because thats something you wont get out of a les Paul

left bane
#

@graceful tinsel Why do I sense the LP might be black

left bane
#

They're going to sound relatively similiar, especially on beginner amps

graceful tinsel
left bane
graceful tinsel
left bane
#

I expect a review in a few months so i can copy vai_urine

#

Going to be in Kr and jpn in early spring

#

so might grab something for the ride back

graceful tinsel
left bane
supple dust
#

i know why you chose the LP and Pacifica as the options

#

bocchi bought the pacifica to replace her LP

#

so go with the pacifica

#

(pacificas are also generally better value than Les Pauls given the same price brackets)

graceful tinsel
#

I mean pacificas are generally better value than 95% of things in their pice brackets

left bane
#

When are we getting an anime expounding the virtues of the revstar

long sluice
left bane
long sluice
#

i'll see if they have them

left bane
#

At the beginner stage it’s mostly about just wanting to play

left bane
#

And picking an instrument that will inspire you to pick it up

graceful tinsel
left bane
#

The actual specs etc are nice but not super important as long as the overall quality is good and, most importantly, the guitar is set up properly

graceful tinsel
#

legit just try out a strat and a les paul

#

see what you like more because they're way different in how they feel

#

way different

long sluice
graceful tinsel
#

Specs are the least important part of guitars

left bane
long sluice
#

right now it's more about learning than about which guitar i get
makes sense

graceful tinsel
#

Guitars and other handicraft/tools are more like food than they are computers or cars

But that's a conversation/rant for another time

left bane
#

Specs are more about targeting a specific goal rather than making one guitar better or worse than another

long sluice
#

lol i'll just get something that looks good

left bane
#

Based

graceful tinsel
#

unironically what a beginner should do

left bane
#

If it looks good you’ll want to show it off, to show it off you need to play it, to play it you need to practice 🤔

long sluice
#

yea so i just practice till i can show it off™️

left bane
#

One little caveat, when you actually buy the guitar, negotiate with the store for them to set it up for you

long sluice
#

set it up?

left bane
#

They don’t come out of the box in a playable state most of the time

#

Lots of little adjustments to be made

long sluice
#

oh so i have to tune it and stuff like that?

left bane
#

You’ll learn to do them yourself in the future

#

But it’s nice to have a clean baseline

long sluice
#

makes sense

graceful tinsel
left bane
long sluice
#

that makes sense

graceful tinsel
#

caveat: some stores won't do shit to the frets. If they don't, ask them who to take the guitar to

left bane
#

Fixing these kind of requires you know how they should be and can need tools, so best for the shop to handle it

graceful tinsel
#

remember: most store staff play too

#

so they're gonna have friends who tech for a living or as a side gig

long sluice
left bane
#

For tuning, buy a clip on tuner

#

They’re like $15 and infinitely more convenient than the little microphone ones

long sluice
#

but the apps work just as well right?

left bane
#

No

long sluice
#

oh

left bane
#

They can, in theory, be correct sometimes

#

But practically no

#

You don’t want to use a microphone to tune

#

It picks up noise, it’s imprecise etc

long sluice
#

does this mean i tuned my guitar wrong?

left bane
#

No its not wrong

graceful tinsel
#

I never had issues with microphone tuners... in an isolated environment

#

that's the keyword there

left bane
#

Just think of it as the difference between throwing a dart at a board and landing dead center vs just a random point

long sluice
#

well my room is pretty much the most isolated room in the house

supple dust
graceful tinsel
#

clip tuners are faster, track better, more accurate, etc

graceful tinsel
#

just get a snark headstock tuner

left bane
long sluice
left bane
#

I use this, dirt cheap and very reliable

#

Snark is also great

graceful tinsel
#

snark also comes in very flashy colors so you can't really lose it accidentally

left bane
#

And just cause this might not have been clear

graceful tinsel
left bane
#

Headstock tuners use vibrations

#

They don’t care about noise

long sluice
#

will make sure to buy

left bane
#

So let’s say you’re watching tv or playing with friends, it will still be accurate

graceful tinsel
#

one of John Suhr's favorite guitar is a FULL BASSWOOD BODY AND NECK axe that Grover Jackson made for him in the 80s

long sluice
#

also if i happen to buy a guitar online, i'll have to set it up myself yeah?

graceful tinsel
#

now if you ask me, I think that that is insane

left bane
#

You can bring it to a shop

graceful tinsel
#

as in, not sane

long sluice
supple dust
left bane
#

Setup prices will vary depending where you are

#

But usually not terrible

#

Generally when you buy a guitar you can get them to throw it in for free, though not always

graceful tinsel
graceful tinsel
#

but John likes it despite its fragility

graceful tinsel
left bane
left bane
#

(Unlike k-on)

long sluice
#

well

#

i've been playing easier bocchi music

#

the ones she plays not during concerts lol

graceful tinsel
#

it's already on the screen

long sluice
#

like double dark past and the elegy of the part time worker who lost her identity to the just-arrived newbie

graceful tinsel
#

hey it's literally on the screen

supple dust
graceful tinsel
#

Ryo wrote the music

#

which makes sense

graceful tinsel
#

The best music are written by bass players who aren't shit tactics

long sluice
#

well i think she can write music too
she has been playing guitar for every day for 3 years

#

and 6 hours a day at that

graceful tinsel
#

The best guitar player I've ever seen can play anything, but holy shit

#

when he's left to write his own music, I would rather listen to elevator muzak

supple dust
#

she probably could write tho with that hijink of her doing a slide improv instead of breaking down and exploding

graceful tinsel
#

and that guy was playing better than legends, and doing guitar clinics across America (a foreign country) when he was like

#

12

long sluice
#

oh.

graceful tinsel
#

Basically songwriting is a skill that also needs to be developed like everything else

graceful tinsel
left bane
#

Id implode if expected to play an improv slide solo

#

I bought a slide once, couldn’t figure out how to put it on and decided maybe slide isn’t for me

graceful tinsel
long sluice
graceful tinsel

that's why we have the whammy bar tactics

100,000% Yamaha Pacifica, and here’s why: the epiphone will have bad quality control, and at this price, you need good quality control or the guitar can be crap. The Yamaha is famous for its good QC, and good reputation overall

#

TLDR: get rhe pacifica

crimson shadow
#

Idk about epiphone having bad QC. That's more of a HB thing. If it's inspired by Gibson it's gonna be pretty solid.

left bane
crimson shadow
left bane
crimson shadow
#

classic and modern les pauls, and my brother has an SG standard

left bane
#

I tried a couple last week and my assessment didn't change

crimson shadow
#

idk if we've been playing the same guitars

left bane
#

Gibsons are fine, the QC issues in their case is mostly just finish stuff

#

just a hazard of using nitro really

#

mid/high end epiphone to me has always felt like a $200 guitar cosplaying as a gibson

long sluice
#

i'll get a black yamaha 012

left bane
#

Just so you know and for absolutely no reason whatsoever, if you were to say, want a black pick guard, you can get them for like $10 on amazon

long sluice
left bane
#

The plastic

#

Not related to picks

long sluice
left bane
#

Budget?

long sluice
#

hmm

#

100$?

long sluice
graceful tinsel
#

@left banelike clockwork

left bane
#

It really does look better with the black though honestly

#

Yamaha uses like an optic white instead of cream

long sluice
#

I wanted an all black guitar so

left bane
#

This is a safe space

long sluice
left bane
#

@supple dust Where to get the bocchi cubes

long sluice
#

I'd also like to know!!

graceful tinsel
left bane
#

I saw the bocchi thread

graceful tinsel
#

NGD after all

left bane
#

Pls continue to play respectfully

#

NOT shredding 20 notes per second pepegoth

long sluice
left bane
#

Yeah I’ll help you out with it in a bit

graceful tinsel
#

"pacifica" has to be there on the listing

left bane
#

I need to handle a meeting in five min

long sluice
#

good luck

left bane
#

@graceful tinsel you want to cover the interface vs amp thing?

#

$100 would probably go farther with a solo + a Marshall plugin

graceful tinsel
#

no I wanna go grab some scotch on the rocks and jam

hollow girder
long sluice
#

what gear do i even need for e. guitar?

#

have been playing on acoustic so far

hollow girder
long sluice
#

what amp should i get?

#

and cable shouldn't matter all that much, right?

hollow girder
hollow girder
long sluice
hollow girder
long sluice
#

sure

crimson shadow
#

see if you can find used boss katanas

long sluice
#

are they that much better?

#

what about the katana mini?

#

i was looking for the katana since i saw that it had super good reviews but it was too expensive

left bane
#

the nice thing with katanas is that it feels like literally everyone has them (because they do)

#

so they come up on the used market constantly, even at retail stores

#

last time i visited guitar center they had a bunch of used ones available

#

as an added bonus, since they're so popular it's easy to find people who had had whatever question/problem you wind up with

crimson shadow
#

katana 50 mk 2 is the best option

long sluice
#

well, i looked on ebay and a bunch of guitar sites
none of them had a used katana 50 mk

crimson shadow
#

reverb?

long sluice
crimson shadow
#

used music stuff website

left bane
#

beyond that, you'll need a cable (probably about $10-20), a tuner ($15), some picks and probably an extra pack of strings for when one inevitably breaks at an inconvenient time

long sluice
#

based in US?

left bane
crimson shadow
#

yes

left bane
#

It's mostly US based

crimson shadow
#

it's ebay for music stuff

long sluice
#

I'll check it out

left bane
#

for the katana though, id be surprised if your local stores don't have them

#

they may just not have a way to list them online

long sluice
#

they have them, but only brand new

#

I think I'll get a fender

#

should I be worried about how it sounds?

crimson shadow
long sluice
#

gotcha

crimson shadow
#

the speaker size on the boss katana 50 is bigger, and bigger is generally better sounding

#

there's more effects with a katana

#

but the mustang LT25 is the cheaper option

long sluice
#

well
I don't think i need too many effects
I plan on playing rock.. and that's it..

#

unless rock needs a lot of effects??

left bane
long sluice
#

so a mustang would be sufficient, yeah?

left bane
#

yeah its fine

long sluice
#

gotcha

left bane
#

if you have picks already, they'll be fine, otherwise most people tend to gravitate to Dunlop Jazz IIIs eventually

#

I have this cable, but you can probably save some money if you shop around. There's nothing really special about it https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09SJVHNPS

crimson shadow
#

the LT25 should be solid

long sluice
long sluice
#

any cable will work, right?

left bane
#

any guitar cable will yeah

long sluice
#

a cheap cable vs expensive cable won't have too much difference is what i mean

left bane
#

I wouldn't go too cheap

long sluice
#

yea of course i'm not going to buy anything too cheap

left bane
#

Theoretically you can get one so poorly built that it actually lacks shielding or something lik that

long sluice
#

10 - 15$ should be fine

left bane
#

just avoid getting a super long one if you dont actually need it lol

#

they tend to get everywhere

long sluice
#

i will need at most 15ft lol

crimson shadow
#

yea

#

i use a 3 metre one

long sluice
#

i will

#

probably need

#

a guitar case as well

crimson shadow
#

are you planning on moving it about a lot?

long sluice
#

yes

#

are amps heavy?

crimson shadow
#

can be

long sluice
#

well is the mustang heavy

crimson shadow
#

it's 5.7 kg

long sluice
#

man

#

that's pretty heavy to be carrying around all day..

crimson shadow
#

what

#

amps aren't meant to be carried around all the time lol

long sluice
#

true

crimson shadow
#

you set it up, leave and use it for a bit

#

for comparison the katana 50 is 12 kg

long sluice
#

owh

#

okay i think i'm set on the mustang lol

#

anything that i should look out for in terms of guitar cases?

crimson shadow
#

just get a decent gig bag

long sluice
#

gotcha

hollow girder
# long sluice what about the katana mini?

Don’t get the katana mini, if you want a mini amp, get a used spark mini. If you can find it, a used Spark 40 or boss katana (I prefer the spark) is really really good

#

But the mustang lt25 is good as well

faint furnace
#

roadrunner has some good gig-bags

#

left bane
graceful tinsel
left bane
#

Tbh I wish I had one when I started lol

long sluice
#

should i??

left bane
#

Would have been way nicer to bring to school and friends houses than the old 1 watt miniamps we all had meow

long sluice
left bane
#

Even 1 watt is plenty loud

long sluice
#

oh

#

I guess i shouldn't worry about watts that hard then

left bane
#

I’ve gigged with a drummer on a 5 watt lol

long sluice
#

fun

left bane
#

Watts start to matter if you want a clean (ie not distorted sound) at high volumes

long sluice
#

well, that only matters in a band or something like that right?

left bane
#

Practically yeah

long sluice
#

there's a used one for dirt cheap right now too

#

the privilege of choice haunts me...

left bane
#

I’m kind of on the side of just buy what you want to play rather than what’s actually the best (which is probably the katana). For amps, I’d say just@go to guitar center and play around with them

#

They’ll have all these in stock

#

The big advantage of the thr is portability

long sluice
#

im going to be moving around a ton lol

#

school concerts, playing with a pianist friend in public (if I have the guts to do that lol), stuff like that

crimson shadow
#

There's not many effects on the THR-5

left bane
#

Thr would probably struggle with live playing

long sluice
#

hmm

#

more of an indoor amp, yeah?

left bane
#

Yeah, or solo busking really

#

It’s basically designed as the ideal practice amp

crimson shadow
#

The mustang LT 25 is more versatile. The THR-5 is what I'd get as a practice amp second.

long sluice
#

I'll look around a bit more,, sorry for being so indecisive

crimson shadow
#

Unless you don't mind buying pedals later.

long sluice
crimson shadow
#

Then effects won't matter and you can buy the ones you want.

left bane
#

Personally I think effects are massively overblown

long sluice
#

in what way?

#

not as important as they are made out to be?

crimson shadow
#

I mean playing power chords without overdrive or distortion is gonna sound a bit whimpy.

#

That isn't available on the THR5

left bane
#

Just use the appropriate channel

#

Boost into a digital amp will sound like poop

#

Thr has reverb, chorus, delay etc, not really sure what else you can possibly want

left bane
long sluice
#

makes sense

left bane
#

Compressors are great, but also probably the last thing beginners should use lol

long sluice
#

the hell is a compressor?

left bane
#

It smooths out the volume of your playing to make it more even and consistent

#

Stuff like tapping comes through much clearer with less actual force playing

long sluice
#

ah

left bane
#

It can also just generally make the guitar feel a bit more responsive

#

Downside is it covers up sloppy dynamics

#

So great to have down the line, but can be a crutch

#

If you know math rock at all

#

They tend to use them heavily

#

Or the sound of people like Ichika Nito

long sluice
left bane
#

Oh it actually had a compressor built in anyway

#

Go figure

long sluice
#

oh

graceful tinsel
left bane
#

I too abuse compressors

long sluice
#

okay so i think

graceful tinsel
#

ah true

long sluice
#

that thr5 has enough effects for me

left bane
#

I play covet shit vai_urine

long sluice
#

i'm literally going to play one genre

#

also it's 110$ i think that's a steal

crimson shadow
#

id still prefer the mustang lt25 just because of the bigger speaker personally

supple dust
#

the THR5 is no slouch

#

it can get pretty loud

#

good travel amp, top 5 (not like theres good ones 5 to choose from to begin with)

faint furnace
long sluice
#

hmm, found a fender squier sonic strat that i really like the look of
how does it compare to the pacifica?

graceful tinsel
#

Worse

long sluice
#

gotcha

#

also are there any good "cheap" les pauls? just curious since someone here said they had bad quality control or something along those lines

crimson shadow
#

epiphones are fine

#

id get a les paul classic or standard from epiphone, the classic is the best relatively budget proper les paul

long sluice
#

meant something along the lines of 300$

crimson shadow
#

it was £350 here

#

the inspired by gibson stuff is what you wanna look at imo

long sluice
crimson shadow
#

rip

#

SGs are usually cheaper

#

there's also yamaha

#

they make something les paul/SG esque with the revstar

long sluice
#

sgs?
yea I'm planning on buying a yamaha but I'm a bit curious about les paul since I really like the looks

crimson shadow
#

£350 is $442 apparently so i got it a lot cheaper new lol

long sluice
#

lucky

crimson shadow
#

uk sucks for everything else

long sluice
crimson shadow
#

if it's an inspired by gibson one it's probably solid

#

but

#

it's $500 lol

#

are you in the US?

long sluice
#

nah

#

central Europe

crimson shadow
#

looking at thomann then?

long sluice
#

that could work

crimson shadow

i might get a 112

any 212s in your budget?

crimson shadow

yamaha might do their frets a little better, cut the nut a little nicer

I like the look of a squier affinity but prefer the sound on a yamaha pacifica

i can't really decide lmao

long sluice
hollow girder

Or well, a total lack thereof anyway kekw

long sluice
#

and i thought i'd lucked out finding that color lmao

hollow girder
#

well, mostly, if youre in europe, its really not a bad deal

left bane
#

For the price they’re honestly pretty good, just need to budget in a setup and hope you get very lucky

hollow girder
#

but what shape did you like?

hollow girder
long sluice
#

but there seems to be a lack of good les paul shape guitars around my budget lmao

hollow girder
#

are you in europe?

long sluice
#

yup

#

was checking out thomann

#

i might be getting a yamaha pacifica

#

either 012 or 112

hollow girder
#

the pacifica is a great option

#

but if youre in europe

#

a harley benton would actually be quite nice

#

mabye not a B stock

long sluice
hollow girder
#

but HB is definetly an option, since there arent any shipping fees

#

a BIG reason why people dont buy HB

#

is (other than QC issues) the shipping, since they are made in germany

#

if youre in europe, there is little to no shipping

long sluice
#

fair

#

quality control issues = variable quality right?

hollow girder
#

yes, but you can send it back for a new one

#

and you can do it for free

long sluice
#

sounds like a hassle..
and i'm not sure if i can even tell if there's an issue with it

hollow girder
#

since shipping = around 0

hollow girder
long sluice
#

tfw the only guitar store is a 3 hour drive away

#

how does a hb compare to the pacifica anyway?

Yamaha is Yamaha tbh, you’re not going to beat it without spending significantly more

#

The most realistic part of the show was replacing a $3000 Gibson with a $600 Yamaha vai_urine

hollow girder
#

if it goes well (the HB) , you have a great guitar, but the pacifica will guaranteed be good

#

i would get the HB, because its what you specifically want

#

it wont be much hassle to just ask a guitar store person if there is anythign glaringly wrong

long sluice
long sluice
hollow girder
#

if you want the pacifica over the HB, then totally get the pacifica

long sluice
#

and i don't feel like getting the guitar checked

hollow girder
#

fair

long sluice
left bane
#

Just with an aftermarket pick guard ($10)

long sluice
#

almost the same

left bane
#

Go figure

long sluice
#

also speaking of pickguards, do i really have to cut all the strings off to replace it?

left bane
#

Just do it when you change strings

long sluice
#

fair

#

thanks for all your help

left bane
#

Just a heads up, I would budget in a visit to the store with any guitar you get

#

It’s still going to need a setup

#

If you’re handy you can probably manage it yourself, but there’s a bit of a learning curve

long sluice
#

sure
what'll they be doing with the guitar

#

string replacement and stuff like that?

hollow girder
#

intonation

#

action

left bane
#

Adjusting string height (action), neck curvature (relief) and cleaning up the fret ends (they can start to sprout out of the wood if humidity changes)

long sluice

okay that makes a lot of sense

#

and i probs wouldn't be able to do that at home

left bane
#

1 and 2 you can, 3 probably won’t be an issue

long sluice
#

i'll go to a store with it if i can

#

but i'm not sure since the only guitar stores are quite far

#

probably all the questions i needed to ask

#

thanks a lot

pacifica 112 imo still

long sluice
#

yes

#

actually yes

long sluice
#

well

#

what's the difference

left bane
long sluice
#

ah

graceful tinsel
#

I would like to explain here

#

"alnico pickups" does not mean "better". You will find many high end pickups with neodymium or ceramic magnets

#

the thing here is that cheap ceramic pickups are almost always trash, trash trash

left bane
graceful tinsel
long sluice
#

oh but the 112J still has ceramic pickups

#

it's the 112V that has alnico pickups

left bane
#

go figure

#

yamaha and its billion 1 letter models

long sluice
#

it's pretty confusing isn't it..

left bane
#

It's both better and worse than ibanez

#

Japanese guitar manufacturers in general are allergic to names

#

meanwhile in ibanez land

# graceful tinsel wtf even

i swear once they start raising prices they feel a need to also start adding numbers so you feel like you're getting your money worth

long sluice
#

not sure if that works..

left bane
#

idk the rg8870 is is definitely at least 16 times better than the rg550

graceful tinsel
#

I forgot what the 2 is other than "no pickguard"

#

no clue what R is

left bane
#

there are prestige tiers now?

graceful tinsel
#

always has been

#

the higehr the number, the better it looks

graceful tinsel
#

the lower the number, the plainer it looks

left bane
#

well now my AZ feels terrible

graceful tinsel
#

at least that's how it was

#

back when they had like the 1550, 2550, 3550 etc

#

idk what they're even doing now

long sluice
#

guitars are confusing

graceful tinsel
#

if Ibanez ever makes a J Custom AZ it's gonna reach suhr prices kek

left bane
#

I demand they add 3000 to my model number

#

so that it's at least on par with the RGs that cost the same

graceful tinsel
#

tbh an RG that costs the same as a higher priced (read: artist) AZ are J Custom holyFUCK

#

anyways back on topic, just check which 112 is the coolest

#

don't worry about the pickups

#

that shit's replaceable

left bane
graceful tinsel
#

AZ has a different scheme

#

the first 2 numbers denote the number of frets

long sluice
graceful tinsel
#

idek why the 22 fret models are 2204 and 24 fret models are 2402 tho

#

like wtf are those 02 and 04 for?

left bane
#

so the numbers don't feel too short for the price

graceful tinsel
#

Actually no

#

I do know

#

it's pickguard and non pickguard, HH vs HSS

#

because they did make the 22 fret HH model under 2202 iirc

left bane
#

yeah that seems to match

graceful tinsel
#

short lived tho

left bane
#

i have a 2204, pretty great even if I miss the 2 extra frets once in awhile
