What is a good fun piece to play and learn the travis picking pattern at least? i been playing about 1-2 years and am curious about travis picking but am overwhelmed by how much music there is.
i generally play on my nylon classical guitar. i occasionally play on my acoustic.
elvis presley classic "cant stop falling in love" seems fun. but also am interested in "dust in the wind".
i also want to do pearl jam "just breathe"- but it is so much faster and lengthy compared to a lot of others. would anyone be able to offer tips and insights and recommendations?

To directly address your question, I usually ask people to start with threes and twos. Play three notes with a finger in the span of two notes with your thumb at the same time, do this with all your fingers for practice one at a time opposite your thumb, then reverse it so your finger plays two notes in the same timespan your thumb plays three.

Just breathe is just endurance on thumb plus ring finger double stop, middle, index, thumb, ring, middle, then it repeats. The real trick is making sure not to pluck too hard. Just enough effort to sound the notes, thumb on the downbeats. If you need a hand with the pattern when you decide to work on it let me know.

Did you watch the video link in the song learning archive? It shows the exercise exactly. Fingers play three notes, thumb plays two notes in the same amount of time span, use all the different fingers, then reverse the pattern and play three notes with the thumb and two notes with the fingers in the same time span. It is similar to a drummer's exercise in polyrhythms.
