This man can play anything ever written by anyone. Any Classical piece, any electric piece, with the finest technique I've ever seen. He's easily the best technician alive.

We didn't specify having to compose music.

#

Jazz, fusion, rock, classical. Clicks and whistles without boomer bends or with, Whatever.

#

Most electric players (all mentioned above except Henson) can barely play two notes at once in the same rhythm. Polyrhythmic phrasing with three plus notes they'd all fall apart.

#

Shawn Lane was fast but needed a plectrum, and was 90% single note phrases.

#

Henson has room to expand his technique to catch Dukic by the time he's 54. Lane is gone already, sadly. Becker has ALS and it's a damn shame because for a while he was ahead of Dukic with a plectrum before his disease limited him to being a fantastic composer.

The rest mentioned are not even close

Guthrie Govan for the technicallity and EVH/Petrucci for the musicality (they're both amazing player, but what is really important is their image/popularity, and the parts they created)

Tim henson isnt even the best in his genre

#

Id go with Zoran or Tosin Abasi

#

imo tosin is leagues better than henson musically and technically

elder anchor
#

Gotta check him out

Eric Johnson is underrated too imo

#

I'll also offer a nod and a glance toward Robert Fripp

#

And i dont know about "greatest ever" but Wilko Johnson is extremely underrated, taking his technique into account. The album he did with Roger Daltrey is a great first listen if you haven't already.

Actually now that I got time to think about it

#

In terms of technicality, either 90s Paul Gilbert or Anton Oparin

#

But they both have the same issue.

Not enough songs where they get to apply their musicality

#

(nothing mind blowing there either)

#

Yeah, mix of technicality and musicality it's either Shawn Lane or Yngwie before the crash

hidden orchid
#

Imo my list (not in any order)

Guthrie, Tosin, Gilbert, Yngwie in terms of electric

Then for classical I’m going with the ā€˜classics’ Segovia and TĆ”rrega (mainly cuz I only listen to those two)

I would say that Guthrie Govan is probably the most dense guitar player of our generation, as far as the capacity to comprehend and articulating themselves on the instrument. He's certainly not my favorite, as I don't think his music has extended the instrument past its typically tonal qualities. G.G. does sit on the shoulders of those like Shawn Lane, who I would argue was the most musically and mechanically refined of all of the highly dense and technical players of the 80s/90s.

Jason Becker has a quality to his music that is certainly masterful, yet full of a deeply carefree and youthful kind of energy. His technical spirit was very well practiced, but I think its hard to argue he was the best.

icy pivot
#

He's nowhere near the most technically sound

#

As in

#

he's fast and musical but he's sloppy

#

Like let's say in the realms of shred and country

I was saying Shawn Lane was mechanically refined

oh my bad

I was about to mention Shawn in that case lol hyperkek

keen lark
#

not GG, I could have phrased that better, but I agree with you

#

I think the reason why I have a huge amount of respect for him and mentioned them together is because he did some of the best known transcriptions of Shawn's music, who does have a huge reputation for his mechanics

Like,

Guthrie is clearly very fast, very skilled and very versatile but he definitely is not as clean as a lot of players who aren't as good as he is.

That's perfectly fine music-wise IMO (as far as the music is concerned anyways)

#

99.9% of us are hyperkek

#

I don't think he has. Weird though because IMO Petrucci is a bigger target
