#Most overrated band
1 messages · Page 2 of 1
so in other words the popularity was on musical merit first and foremost
i wouldn't call nirvana overrated. they had a lot of bangers and defined a generation
I think that was back when like the music itself was actually popular
These days the music isn’t as mainstream anymore
metallica you could argue is overrated now, by not really living up to the legacy they created
Play Teen Spirit in front of a bunch of zoomers, some of them will know it for sure but that’s about it
And Something in the Way too cause of The Batman and the Tik Tok memes
and master of puppets coz of stranger things 💀
Yuuup
That’s just how much of the music the majority of zoomers know tbh
Except nowadays people just know Nirvana only for Kurt Cobain
Basically Nirvana = Kurt and then his suicide so it’s Nirvana = Kurt = suicide jokes
Seriously from non Nirvana fans who are zoomers, the only things I’ve ever heard when Kurt’s name gets brought up is just suicide jokes 💀
And then actual Nirvana fans, it’s just “cOurTnEy kIlLeD hIm”
(Which I believe tbh)
Sometimes I gotta remind myself that Metallica was actually part of the 80s
their 80s albums are all killer no filler
Yeah I’ve only ever heard their 80s stuff
And then not much after that
It’s not that I hate it, I just haven’t bothered to 💀
black album is classic also
I think the general consensus among the opinions I’ve seen is that they peaked around AJFA and black album era
And just haven’t reached that peak ever since
the consensus i've seen is pretty much distributed equally among first four albums. everyone has their personal fave. black album is often considered a step down tbh
Oh yeah that too
But I just mean like in terms of live performance
Or popularity in general
Then again that’s entirely up for debate
But this is the general consensus for peoples favorite albums yes
I feel like some fans of Kill Em All are secretly Megadeth fans who are trying to hold the urge to spam “dAvE wRoTe thE wHolE alBuM”
(But some fail miserably to hold that urge)
Nowadays it’s Something in the Way
Cause of the Batman and all the Tik Tok memes that followed after it
I personally think that song is overrated too, it’s been meme’d into oblivion and I wasn’t even that much of a fan of it
I don’t like it tbh
Doesn’t mean I don’t like songs that have been meme’d into oblivion, like Bad to the Bone imo is still a good song and the memes make it funnier tbh
the amount of FUCKING times i’ve gotten “PlAy ThE bAtMaN sOnG”
i know how to play it on the drums
super easy really
one of their easier songs
Something in a way is actually such a bad song, doesnt make the band overrated tho, like litterally, most people find out about Nirvana is because its "Omg the dead smiley shirt", and yeah, dude my mom forgot about Nirvana untill 2013.... They aren't overrated or underrated, some songs of theirs is overrated but the band itself is perfectly rated
But lets not talk about Elton John, Eric Clapton and their bands... Everyone over the age of 37 is in love with those
This is actually a good description of Nirvana
I said earlier in this chat that I think Nirvana can be a bit overrated but then yeah I realized some songs are just overrated
And others are underrated
Overrated songs are like Teen Spirit, “the one Batman song 🤓”, maybe anything else from Nevermind??? (Then again some of the other Nevermind songs are pretty underrated like In Bloom)
Underrated songs imo is like anything from Bleach/In Utero
But yeah I think Nirvana is pretty perfectly rated
teen spirit is one of the greatest songs of all time
it cannot be overrated
it is immortal
this thread is such a waste of time xD
Theres only like 3 songs from that album that are overrated, mainly the songs i dislike the most, teen spirit, in a way, and im bloom
In*
Is it just me or do you think a song like Lithium should have been the main track of the Album
In bloom is good, i like that type of skater punk rock
Yeah the vibe to the song is nice
But what I like is the lyrics
The verse lines are just so random that I like to just randomly say it out to people and confuse the hell out of them
And then of course the chorus has a good message
im still trying to learn this song , that one fill in the chorus is really hard, dave really is talented and god of triplets
Nirvana is the most overrated band frrr
Many Japanese bands are underrated
And Chinese band
pov you don't like the beatles
Led Zeppelin or Radiohead
That one guitar guy when i was at highschool. He never played good idk why people liked him defo overrated trash
Pink Floyd is super overrated
I have heard better prog rock band smth like sense of wonder
thas crazy
xD
i went to see pink floyd tribute band few months ago
was mindblowing
i can only imagine what it must have been like to see pink floyd for first time, in the 70s
and god bless roger waters and everything he stands for 🫂
zero directions
I saw Roger on the 10th
Crazy show
My mum saw Pink Floyd (without Roger) back in 1990
beatles are so overrated
actually nirvana is perfectly rated
they arent played much on the radio
pink floyd is litterally for old people
and they arent overrated
nor under
or perfect
they like
ick
idk
Damn
krinj
System of a Dawn. So much overrated
System of a dawn sounds like emo version of system of a down

well, maybe both are overrated 🤣
||in fact this could be a good name for a shitty cover band of soad||
well, I was originally talking about System of a Down, but I made a mistake on the name and we joked on it. But yes, System of a Down is overrated
no it is not
they have so many great songs
amazing albums
On all the songs I heard of them I couldn't find really relevant things and I didn't liked them
ok but you personally not liking something doesn't enter the equation of whether you consider it overrated or not
||Yeah this is true that I didn't heard that much of them, like 8 songs max, but still||
lul
yeah I know , but everything here is subjective. for me it's overrated
If I see atleast 50 people a day with a nirvana shirt on and they don't know 2 songs I'm pretty sure there overrated 😭
Yet everyone has there shirt?
No, were talking actual fans not kids that think there cool Lol
They only throw it on cuz its cool or wtv
But I think they are definitely perfectly rated
That’s people who don’t even actually listen to them
They don’t count
But honestly if they think it’s cool to wear it, just leave it alone
Quizzing them on how many songs they know is so elitist and cringe
its a fuckin sick smiley tbh
Heyyyy 😡
With u
Honestly tho, I do enjoy Stevie Ray Vaughn a little, I had a phase over his stuff..
But now I just think its all the same, its not as great as it is pictured out to be
Everyone always freaks out over his tone and yeah its alr
Idt its anything to die over tho
🤥🤥🤥
They had a massive following, but I don’t think they really “reinvented” as much as influenced
jimi hendrix and the Beatles
the Grateful is the only corrent answer
The Beatles single handedly reinvented pop song writing by actually writing their own songs instead of just performing what others had already wrote
They were always at the forefront of the 60s because of how they changed the music industry
During their early “boy band” days, they basically started the whole British Invasion and made the poppy rock music from the 50s popular again at a time when the future of rock was considered bleak after Buddy Holly’s death
And during their midpoint, the experimentation they did single handedly pushed psychedelic stuff into the mainstream and popularized it
They also were a key figure in the 60s culture revolution
👆
thats crazy man
ngl i think its js one of those bands that only got big(as of the last few years) cuz of tiktok and the whole alt/emo/quirky thing
and yes i did just realixe that im replying to a 4 month old post
what songs
also everyone also say they sound generic. MAYBE CUZ THEY WERE THE BAND THAT CREATED THAT SOUND ASILFJHWEOLIFUHGOWILUEFHB
💀
Nickelback and five finger death punch bad pls give me upvote
On a serious note I think SOAD is overrated
💯
i dont
(I am basing my opinion on 3 songs btw)
But I don't like how they go from serious to goofy as fuck
that's because they are often mocking stuff in their lyrics
Every slipknot song just sounds like 5 seperate car alarms going off while the singer talks about wanting to die it's really not appealing
i liked bone church
I'm not joking send me your address, we fight like men
it's different, not like most of the other slipknot ive heard
They have a few I dig but most of their stuff makes me wanna decay
you just named their next song
Haven't listened to new slipknot much but chapeltown rag and the dying song are MID
i make myself decay
LMAOO
check out bone church
Custer sounds like the singers constipated I'm sorry
An underrated song from Slipknot though is Gematria, I love how technical it is
I will later
Beatles
Every Beatles song is either like "I looooove my girlfriend she is sooooooo prettyyyy the sun is soooo cool" or "the world doesn't exist, cheese is a figment of your imagination, I am a light beam"
I don't rlly like the Beatles but that's probably just my music taste
Beatles be like "I am cattle you are a cart we shall run away together with the families groceries" and for some reason people flipped their wigs over it
what albums have you listened to
and how did drive my car make that list
not a bad song but the best???
Abbey Road
The Beatles
Help!
Rubber Soul
Let it Be
Revolver
Yellow Submarine
1
most of beatles sound too calmly for me
like too soft?
yes
oh
white album has some hard songs you may like
yer blues is pretty good
oh mb you listened to that
well cant help youi ig :/
np
Nirvana idk why people went crazy for smells like teen spirit
I still like them tho
And also Beatles I don't know what made them so popular the songs are too boring and simple for me
AC/DC and for me Megadeth as well i just dont know how you can get popular with those singers
There was a band I've heard called betrayed and a guy said it was like megadeth except the singer could actually sing couldn't find it anywhere tho
that would be a way i would like their music. I mean musicaly they make great stuff but dave just cant sing
They were innovative that’s all
What you think of now that’s pop-y and cliche in music is basically cause of them
But lots of other 60s and 70s bands point them as a big infleunce cause they built off that
Cuz its their first song that actually didnt sound like kurt was struggling, also everyone liked that weird typa music at that time
For megadeth it was because of the whole metallica v megadeth thing
Metallica better and less overrated and more perfectly rated
Megadeth is perfectly rated too, but some overrated songs, as well with Metallica
metallica is THE popular metal band so they're necceserally more overrated than megadeth imo (i say that as a big fan of their early albums)
megadeth struggled to pick up the pace and make a name for themselves in the 90's
Polyphia
imo teh animals as leaders guys seem underrated in the "guitar world"; they should be as famous as polyphia with the cool innovative stuff they do
Yeah they need lyrics
Dave Mustaine was from Metallica before getting kicked out in 83
Nah there were a couple of songs like that beforehand
About a Girl comes to mind
He did earn songwriting credits on some of the Kill Em All songs
But Megadeth fans and Dave will make it sound like he wrote all of Metallica’s early music
That being said tho, it is fair to give him credit on the songs that he actually wrote
Not just songs but riffs and solos
mmhm sure, i think he had tons of substance and personality issues and a messed up childhood which explains his temper
still, james is an amazing composer considering what he did by himself
theres a long-form interview with Mustaine on the Gibson channel which was pretty good
its basically the whole mustaine story from childhood through his career and such
Yeah his childhood sounds horrible
Still I don’t think he should be complaining about being kicked out of Metallica even 40 years later
Megadeth has been holding strong as its own band for years
Even if they’ve always been living in the shadow of Metallica, Megadeth has sold more albums than 90% of all other metal bands tbh
To be kicked out of the most popular metal band in the world and then start a band that’s good enough for people to still rival with Metallica, that’s a pretty good achievement
i think they peaked in the 90's or so right?
Well this is Captain Hindsight at work, how would mustaine know what metallica would become, before they even released their first album? they werent in the map at all when he got kicked out
That’s true but he already knew they were kinda mooching off his riffs by the time MoP came out
Cause at that point Metallica was actually getting pretty popular
That was also around the time Megadeth first formed I believe
Even so before their first album came out yeah no one new Metallica would be this popular, but even so Dave felt like Metallica did him wrong
Which is understandable since he had just got kicked out and was yet to form Megadeth
But I think after 40 years later with the pretty good success of Megadeth, it’s dumb to still be mad about this
FR
Nirvana. the only good songs they’ve made are In Bloom and Smells like Teen Spirit.
besides, Pearl Jam>>>>
💀 How ironic
Heart shaped box? Mr. Moustace?
Nirvana made a lot of okay songs, but the only two good songs are the ones i listed
BTS
Yeah this ^^^^
Bro probably came from a parallel universe where Teen Spirit is underrated
^
^
Absolutely I 100 percent agree with this person
Or Serve the Servants
Yuuup
Blink. 182 all they do is power chords and lyrics that are just stupid and rhymes so simple that just make me cringe. They don’t do anything tonally that’s good at all and just turn on overdrive with power chords and call it a day.
Here’s the thing, all of those are good bands, but if a lot of times if you listen to an album of why artist it’s bound to be absolutely boring with filler in between the hits. So yeah probably
I tried listening to album that Snow by chili peppers was on and I just couldn’t get through it. I also tried listening to Radiohead’s ok computer and that shit was mid as well. Good songs throughout , good artist, but boring ass albums imo
It's all taste
I just try to respect all music for what it is
Because I can't sing like Ariana Grande or write Metal or Country songs
I could never write a Radiohead album or a chili peppers album so I just respect them for what they do even if I personally don't like it
I’m saying that these are good artists that I like, but they are technically overrated in my book due to the amount of filler in their albums.
There are some good albums with little to no filler from artists tho
My two favorite examples are Sgt pepper’s lonely hearts club band by the Beatles and What’s the story morning glory by oasis
My favorite albums of all time still have filler that I’m not a fan of.
Sticky Fingers and Tattoo You by The Rolling Stones both have an unceremonious amount
more so tattoo you
ah i see
imagine dragons
Lmao yeah fuck imagine dragons
they’re music is kinda like “if it sounds chorusy and epic and grandiose then it will sound good” but it never does
Ehhh I never liked Sgt Pepper too much myself
I always thought Revolver had no filler
Well actually nvm there’s a couple of filler tracks
But most of the songs are good
there is some filler in sgt pepper but all of the songs still contribute to the mood of the album and the songs lead nicely into one another. Also most of the songs do make you feel something.
One of my fav albums is Rumors by Fleetwood Mac but the one song on there that is an instant skip for me is never going back. It sounds too much like old McDonald had a farm imo
Also dire straits’ self titled is honestly mostly filler. The two songs that stand out are sultans of swing and down to the waterline and all the songs on there honestly just sound like Knopfler trying to make sultans of swing
One short album with no filler by them is Making Movies.
I always thought that Kill Em All and Master of Puppets had no filler
I haven’t listened to those honestly
Ride the Lightning has a couple of filler in the middle tho
I think another album with little to no filler is London Calling by the clash
Most of the songs on there are bangers but my favorite is lost in the supermarket
I honestly haven’t listened to much Metallica at all
Sry can’t comment
“Panic! At The Disco” is overrated imo
ur name...so good
Incredibly so
I don’t rly get it, after listening to A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out and The Death of A Bachelor
It was just so eh
Bachelor felt like stuff I’ve already heard before
Nah you're good, if you wanna listen to them in your own time you can
ACDC ima guitar player and I say they had three reslly good songs everything else booty cheeks asf
you must really not like nirvana and green day too huh
No those are good bands
Green Day uses power chords and tone in creative ways and has good songwriting
Nirvana has good hooks, riffs, songwriting tone, etc so them using power chords isn’t an issue
Nirvana wasn’t really poppy imo
I mean Teen Spirit is pretty poppy but Bleach and In Utero albums are not poppy
That was always the deal with those albums
Oh you’re talking about use of lyrics and power chords
Yeah Kurt was able to write some cool riffs and lyrics
They're the definition of over rated
Erm ashually people always consider them overrated to the point where they’re ironically underrated 🤓
Metallica using another 30 minute intro just to use the same solo and same type of riff
the beatles are fairly rated only if youre old
The next thing I will hear next is someone saying Elvis Presley is overrated
and as we all know, being old is a bad thing
BTS.
well done
Why did I YouTube this
Yeah obviously
In the next 50 years
Michael Jackson
Bruno Mars
Taylor Swift
All bad
Jackson and Bruno Mars are the only two that I do like, I think Taylor’s mad overrated
Silk Sonic is good
taylor swift is already bad
real
She’s a stellar songwriter but her vocals are great at best
I don’t think she can match other people of today with her vocals
But she definitely makes it up with her songwritings
Oh no I think you lost your GF cause you sayings that you don't like Taylor swift probably made her angry that's a reference on how Taylor swift fans are sensitive on criticism on their favorite music
bro swifties are the bottom half of humanity, they are physically and mentally lower then everyone else
now of course there are some that have a brain and arent insanely annoying but generally speaking they are just insufferable
My sister*
Lmao
I’d consider that rude
thats the point
😐
i know DAMN well Volbeat wasn’t on that list
if anything they’re underrated in the States
nah bruh its in alphabetical order bro doesnt mean any of it
Name 3 posers with a bullet for my valentine shirt
indeed nuh uh
hi server owner
God damn what isnt a poser band then?
Any band that has less than a million listeners on Spotify, must be that exclusive
A wilhelm scream, evile, heaven's basement, riffobia, Sodom, the fall of Troy, sao sin, crush 40, Týr, hellripper, vega, solution .45, nitro, the F-ups, death, Zebrahead, hail the villain, drist, jerk, behemoth and kreator
See guys I'm not a poser cause I know all this bands
With less then 1 million listeners on Spotify
Mf put opeth twice
Soundgarden is literally godtier grunge. Also Weezer is overrated.
Kim Normal
But the Beatles weren’t on it and I think they’re like the most poser band everyone can think of
I think ChatGPT didn’t include it on purpose 🤔
Nah I kinda figured you just copied and pasted a list of most popular bands and sent it here
.
Ohhh, bruh
green day sucks
Nickel back…change my mind
Why would we do that
“I hate Nickelback”
-🤖
Lol
i have a hateboner for most california punk in general. People claim that Husker Du were geniuses for inventing punk pop or something, i think they were evil geniuses if anything, because it sucks lol.
Nirvana. Not because the music is bad. But because Kurt Cobain SUCKED at guitar. Some could say it was bad in a good way. But we was quite sloppy with everything he played
kinda irrelevant
I mean, the sloppiness in bleach makes it great, it’s all simple raw catchy riffs
Pls dont kill me but AC/DC(not bad but not as good as everybody says)
Not really. It's overrated for how bad he was
acdc, guns n roses, deftones, black sabbath and all punk idfc if im generalizing, all punk is shit
i'll agree with ac/dc and guns but deftones and sabbath i dont think are too overrated, especially sabbath since they literally invented metal
his simple and sloppily played riffs were intended, grunge is not suppose to be perfect and clear
Could you atleast give a wilhelm scream a chance
ALL OF THEM
goes to show that music isnt about technical skill necceserally and you can be a great composer even as a "bad" guitarist
i dont think he intended to "play sloppy" but its definatelly not a detriment to his music
its much more of a punk vibe where its about the energy, and maybe playing a few extra strings "on accident" actually transmits that energy to the song
Tbh it only started being this way ever since he uh
Hmm
The peasant uprising
I like that term
most blues artists werent like super technical either, nor folk artists/writers
Honestly, the fucking 60s
Yeah and they weren't super celebrated
idk what counts as "popular" for what people liked in teh 20's or whatever tbh
A lot of them were recognized after the fact, not during
eitherway many traditional songs that people regionally sing every festivity or whatever are quite simple usually
popular music in general tends to be catchy, have a hook or some memorable lyrics, you're not gonna get the masses hyped for some experimental jazz
err
if you were to go back in time, or tbh even today, and ask a minstrel or a folk player or a lutist/mandolinist to play
they're gonna be far, far better than most electric guitarists
Better projection, better dynamics, cleaner technique
hmmm maybe, but thats also because those instruments were extremelly expensive back then right
so its less likely for people to have free access to them unelss they're trained
and what kind of music would people do if there wasnt a lutist/mandolinist in town back then? probably sing the best they could and make simplified versions of songs they know
i doubt regular folk had access to highly talented musicians
idk I'd think they probably have more important things to do on their hands than art
wasnt saying the band was bad. Nirvana is a great band. But its overrated af
Fr
Nirvana
People conflating "overrated" with "bad" and "underrated" with "the GOAT" will never stop being amusing fr
It reminds me of how the word “mid” is thrown around these days
People confused “mid” with “bad”
Or “worse than bad”
Mid means meh
True
like seriously
I think Randy Rhoads was a great guitarist. I also think he's overrated as fuck
Contrary to fanboy belief, he wasn't as good as EVH was. He had better soloing technique, but that's irrelevant playing in that style went all to fuck once Yngwie stepped onto the scene. Meanwhile EVH continues to impress with groove, harmonics and overall feel.
Jake E Lee was also better in so many areas too.
Yeah overrated does not always mean not good
And underrated doesnt always mean mean it’s so good, feel like it just means it deserves some attention
nirvana is def overrated. For what it is, every music class and fucking dorm room has a nirvana poster
my friend goes to a classical piano class and they have a nirvana poster on the wall
not even remotely the same genre
Definitely is yeah
Imo Nirvana is overrated for the popular songs
Honestly true
Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come as you are are the only songs people actually know
what was the biggest band of the 90s
Don’t forget “the one Batman song”
real
No clue. I was born in '96
something in my ass
Aaaauuuuuuuu
well it was a rhetorical question, just takes a quick skim through journals and whatnot to see that for "what was the biggest band of the 90s" the consensus is pretty much: Nirvana
and they weren't even active after 1994

so kids in 2023 probably don't see what the big deal is
Pink floyd
I don’t really think Floyd is that overrated, they were a pretty important band and influenced a lot
I think grunge basically died with Kurt
Didn't die soon enough
Unpopular opinion: I like Revolver a bit more than Sgt Pepper
It just flows better
Actually, that’s debatable
But I just like the songs more on Revolver
But Sgt Peppers is still a classic
I agree with that ngl
I’ve always found Sgt Pepper a bit boring
Fair, like it’s so “GOOD” that it loses its charm
I mean like for an album that’s so critically praised, I don’t see how fun it is
Like there are some bops, but overall, it’s not completely masterful in every way
u-um its his style so hes not bad 🤓
Um no
it doesnt matter how it looks, but how it sounds
he may have "sucked" at guitar for you but its his actual style
Yes that's the gripe people had with grunge
"It was now fashionable to be bad"
If you play too well you are a poser and have no soul and feeling. If you play sloppily you are bad and lazy. If you play in between you are boring. Cant please anyone
And this is why you care about no one’s opinions
Arctic Monkeys is definitely overrated
idk
There more main stream stuff like AM definitely is
And I'm a huge fan of them
I never really got the AM hype
the amount of boomers who havent listened to any new music since the 80's and think Pink Floyd is the only band worth listening to makes me think of them as overrated
afaik the biggest divide of music fans in the 60's was beatles vs rolling stones
kinda like nintendo vs sega, where rolling stones were the "edgy" ones ? i guess
Yeah that was the whole trope behind them back then
The Beatles were the pop friendly band and The Rolling Stones were more bluesy and “edgier”
They're both pretentious as fuck in hindsight
The Beatles (mainly John) was traditionally pretentious
The stones tryhard into being edgy and crude it loops back inti being pretentious
John was actually the most pretentious out of all of them yes
By far
Look, anyone who unironically writes a song like "Woman is the N Word of The World" is beyond saving
Paul is second but not by a close second imo
He’s a nice guy but he was a pushover sometimes with trying to innovate and be different
I think he basically did that just for the lols
But yeah his rebellious streak just felt pretentious
haha i see
its funny when you look back at pictures of him and yoko with their maid
"John & Yoko waiting for the maid to make the bed so they can continue protesting against the system, 1969 "
Yup lmao
His rebellious streak was very pretentious
its funny most of hollywood is probably like this too, they just dont take pictures of their home staff
hypersocialized individuals acting like they're fighting for mankind or something, pure narcissism
Nah it’s just the Savior/Messiah complex
The irony is that the same celebrities would do this and accompany it by also singing John’s song “Imagine”
Or “Give Peace A Chance”
haha
well you gotta be some sort of narcissist to have savior/messiah complex right?
I guess so
Actually sometimes it’s just more like you’re so guilty of having it good that you try to make up for it
I’m pretty sure the N word is the N word of the word lol
Wel, we're not dumb like John
I'm going to get buried but AC/DC
oh yeah, fact
especially their early content
that was ridiculously formulaic
even then the later content was kinda pretentious, especially johns stuff
kurt cobain definitely didnt age from 16 onward, but he was right when he said john lennon is wrong about revolution
mayhem has okay music only popular bc of actions taken place
metallica
not saying they are bad
just saying that bc of stranger things it’s all stranger things this stranger things that
AC/DC. Why? I do not see enough variety in their music, but many know what they are getting.
The uniqueness of the voice is amazing for the band, but that meant they didn’t have to improvise
so I get whatchu saying
His voice is grating to me, I can't go through more than 1 song
That makes sense I suppose
I dig it tho
Just a preference thing
Have you heard of Finger Eleven before?
They’re a pretty awesome bunch
I haven't, what genre?
Rock, but the vocals are VERY crisp
A bit more on the edgier side but
I suggest checking out this album https://open.spotify.com/album/2pCfqddO9tLKRz3wzSNGsZ?si=pUAc6ff8QMeSYYT_l3Lcsg
Brian Johnson’s vocals were always a bit unbearable for me too
That’s why Bon Scott was the better singer
But then again Bon Scott always sounded like he was moaning every 5 seconds
No if you play to well your a god
I commend guitar players with that skill level
pure talent
That is because you are open minded. Some people automatically call you "no feeling" if you dare play faster than 5 notes per second
Although thats a exaggeration but you get the point
Is jimi hendrix overrated? i feel like eric clapton and jimmy page are kinda more interesitng and jimi hendrix is blown out of proportion for what he was, RIP
I mean, it might not seem so impressive now, but BACK THEN, he was the stuff
He changed the game
But now we know all of that and how to do it
He was an inventor so he is never appreciated enough no matter how much you give him credit
If you think Hendrix is overrated, you should listen to what guitar solos there were before Hendrix came along
was it though? the blues guys were amazing back then too
Fair
it may be one of those things where you cant appreciate it unless you're very familiar with how earlier music was, like Citizen Kane in cinema
But this ⬆️
Oh whoops sorry didn’t see your message before I sent that
but if it was "good for the time" that also tends to imply he didnt stand the test of time....
Oh
its like saying "cars in the 50's were great for the time", it lowers teh bars, implying that cars nowadays are way better
so saying hendrix was "amazing compared to what was before him" also implies theres not much point on listening to hendrix other than historic reasons
since it implies things got so much better after..
Tho, I do like his music
i like some stuff too but when he plays blues i think the other guys from his time were way better at it
I mean, you have to admit, we DID come up with a bunch of crazy techniques after him. Tapping, Sweep picking, other crazy technical stuff
well you dont really need tapping or sweep picking to be very interesting melodically
most music i like has none of that
its only technical skills
a soulful slow solo will usually be better than some guy playing 500 notes per second with those techniques you mentioned imo
That’s a good point
i guess thats the two ways in which music can advance, you can get new techniques, or you can get new styles and melody types or something
dunno this is way above my knowledge lol 😛
gotta say, the animals as leaders guy is about the only metal i still listen to from time to time, and its like the most technical guy ever, but i enjoy him more than "shredders" or wahtever other showoff metal types do
I mean even today Hendrix is still considered pretty good to some people
hendrix has some amazing songs (soundwise)
little wing sounds it could be from today
little miss strange is a bop too
long hot summer night slaps too
Ghost is overrated imo
And even his more dated songs are bops to me
Foxey Lady, Purple Haze, Voodoo Child
They’re considered the “Hendrix starter pack” but I still like them
voodoo child is a very cool song
although honestly im not a big "are you experienced" fan
Honestly same
Purple haze is okay and foxey lady is a bop but the rest is kinda just okay
nah
purple haze aint that good imo
neither is foxey lady
wind cries mary is a beautiful ballad though
Bro Foxey Lady live at the monterey pop festival is an confidence booster for sure
A lot of rappers that are popular really lack basic skill.
In the past 2 years the standard for who is a good rapper has really gone down.
There's so many rappers that can't rap on beat, have zero flow, are uncreative, often times don't even rhyme properly, and just a general decline in overall quality.
Even rappers that were once great are falling off like Kendrick Lamar.
His stuff with Baby Keem is whack af
Although Baby Keems verse on "Family Ties" is legendary
Rap these days just feels so pretentious and self absorbing
Older rap music from like the 80s and 90s is actually pretty fun tho
Back in the 90s I feel like it used to be like what other “underground” genres like metal and punk rock was, it felt like it actually had a meaning
Like it was basically spreading a rebellious movement
Nowadays tho it just feels so pretentious with wannabes
Yeah rap music is…
Kinda feels soulless, even maybe has a stereotype attached to it
If you hear some samey-feeling rap song with autotune vocals coming from a expensive/flashy car, you’re probably dealing with a high school popular kid or someone with zero music taste
I feel like rap basically sold itself out to become cringe and be more pop-friendly
The amount of kids at school who have a small speaker in their backpacks and start blasting music
I hate it
Something becoming more poppy isn’t all that bad
But when it starts to lose purpose, then there’s a problem
There are a few diamonds in the rough though, like Nothing on You.
That’s true
Yeah I feel like rap used to be like metal and punk where it was “underground” and had a real meaning that was trying to rebel against society
But now it’s the complete opposite
Has no meaning and people just enjoy it somehow
Songs require meaning to me
Both in lyric and feel
But tbh there’s people like Tyler, the Creator who are really good
IGOR is a bop
Mozart
All of the man's music sounds the same
🆗
when it comes to Contemporary Christian music I feel like Hillsong and Bethel are overrated. I know they're not bands, but as a Christian I just see a lot of it pop up.
but if I were to do more mainstream music I'd say imagine dragons, ac/dc, and the beatles
Goddamn
Wow, AC/DC is overrated? Why?
They never really changed their style or experimented
A lot of it hasn't aged very well and nowadays is full of rock clichés
I can see your point in that, yeah. But people usually loved them because the voice was extremely unique, I don’t think I’ve encountered another singer ever with that amount of growl in the voice.
I would agree they didn’t change their music much, but it makes sense because almost every album during their rock reign was a success, so they didn’t need to change the formula
But yeah I don’t want it to sound like I’m disproving you
I think Panic! At the Disco is overrated
Like, extremely overrated
My Chemical Romance as well
Only one good song
I actually like two of their songs
Emperor’s New Clothes and High Hopes
Emperor’s New Clothes only because I did it for a show choir song bahahah
High Hopes is the definitive Insurance commercial music
I really just say that because they dont experiment as much as they could and it seems like the “cool to have on a tshirt” band. Despite that, they have some really good songs.
One of the first times i heard it was when i was at like party city or something for my sister
and beatsaber a few years ago
I hate contemporary christian
as a christian, I can say christian music sucks so bad
Mainstream at least
I like old relient K
Not their new stuff
like, genre/style biases are fine, but i really wont listen to it if the lyrics are not biblical and if the music takes away from the praise
I just like it because
It makes it so Jesus is cool af
Like he was already cool, but now he’s even COOLER..
Lmao
Cigars past intercourse
real
i think korn's a tad bit overrated
The entire genre of metalcore. It lacks a lot of elements that makes music good. I could write a book
Fight me
Nirvana
Anthrax
Explain your reasoning.
Nirvana and KoЯn
Nirvannas pretty overrated but mostly cus everyone has a nirvanna shirt
Anthrax, it would be different if you were going to see them in concert\
anthrax live have tonnes of energy
its not overrated, its popular
but theyre definitely not overrated
^
Yeah more like “overhyped”
Overhyped for the wrong reasons
oh yeah, now that i can kinda get behind
its definitely somewhat overhyped. I keep seeing people always comment on how their live shows were “so unique” when really the most unique shows were the early to late bleach era shows and the late nevermind early in utero era
their songs are no short of straight poetry and genius though
im still infactuated with “milk it”s lyrics. “Youre scents still here in my place of recovery” is such a haunting phrase.
pink floyd, rolling stones, acdc, metallica, polyphia, nirvana (nevermind album), korn, foo fighters(color and shape), iron maiden (number of the beast).
im tryna think of some more old bands
the beatles
van halen (dont hate me) is very overrated, great guitars n shit, but i feel its too overrated
🆗
The mc’s are great lol
One second let me correct that
All music
😩
Honestly making your music appeal to the masses is also a skill with that in mind you can’t really be overrated
Popular ≠ Overrated
metallica and nirvana aren't overrated
Polyphia tho
You are absolutely right
Polyphia is trash
When is something overrated? 😭
Seems like everyone just sends band names here without even knowing what overrated is, huh
My definition of “overrated” is always “gets so much undeserving attention”
When is attention undeserved?
“Overrated - rated or valued too highly”
Depends, it’s up to peoples opinions
Like people will say Nirvana is overrated, but have differnet reasons as to why
Generally, I think people find attention towards a band undeserving if like they’re always played too much
So you’re basically saying more people like it than should be liking it?
Not exactly
^
Well, imo it’s more of
It gets a lot of attention but there’s other bands that deserve it
But again it’s up to interpretation, attention towards a band can be undeserving because of like a specific reason
Like people will say the Beatles are overrated because their music is too soft and tame and don’t understand why they’re popular
People will say Nirvana is overrated because their most popular songs get played too much
But it gets played cuz people wanna hear it
Exactly, and some people especially elitist Nirvana fans don’t like that
That’s why “overrated” is way more of an opinion-based thing
There are people out there who like Teen Spirit, and they may have a reason why
I just think it’s a useless opinion to have
I guess
Why would you be concerned by who/ how many people like what
Seems like wasted brain space
I agree with that too tbh
I think generally it’s just an excuse people try to use to justify the fact that they don’t like the bands/artists music
Like what you like, don’t listen to what you don’t like, simple
💀, when people say "this band is the best" its overrated and ive heard that about almost every band
Just come up with a good reason you don’t have to put something down
You can just say “I don’t like the guitar parts on that” or “I don’t like the vocal tone on that verse” etc
Yup exactly
What that guy was trying to say is that just because a band is popular
It doesn’t mean you have to not like them for it
Or that if you find a band overrated, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re extremely popular all the time
Im not disliking anyone, i like all the bands up there, but overrated
Popular yeah, but played too often, said "these guys are amazing" too often
Which in my opinion
Is overrated
did you just copy and paste the house hold names?
this dude is officially dumb.
not a band but taylor swift is overrated
agreed, but this is about bands
ik i cant think of any others that havent been said though
honestly the most overrated band i can think of is mcr
great songs, but i dont think it deserves this much attention
i agree with that
the only names
@dawn grove alright who do you consider underrated
suicidal tendencies, any other nirvana album that isnt nevermind, excel, and i forgot the name of the other 4
they arent that old tho
late 80's bands
Nirvanna metalica and most definitely no deny whatsoever acdc
Neverminds pretty good
But its like the only album of nirvanna people know
Insecticide is the best album imo
no one knows about excel, they couldve had so much potential if it wasnt for metallica
skater punk needs a new upbringing
in utero the GOAT tho
No Bleach fans?
💀
That’s not what the office program looks like
Cuz its not the office program smartass
wait its not? im confused
Its an 80's and 90's skater punk band
i agree
Oh wow really? Didn’t think it was a band
You really don’t pick up on sarcasm do you? Ahhaha
No not really
This was a joke to begin with
ac dc, pink floyd, nirvana, slayer,
Pipes subsequently inhaled after the getting to know of one’s genitals is indeed a band
gotta be between the beatles and pink floyd
I honestly like the Beatles
theyre alright, but just because they were the first to do what they did doesnt mean they were the best
they laid the foundations for some amazinger bands
That’s fair
Like people say “The Beatles were the peak of music” they were good, but they walked so others could run
fr
and everyone ive talked to about pink floyd said they're really good but i just haven't found any songs that live up to their reputation
Sometimes I feel like Pink Floyd is kinda pretentious
Especially with the extra long songs
dont touch the Deftones!!!! without Deftones we wouldnt have goth girls as we know them
i really like deftones, but i see what you mean when a lot of deftones songs can blend into the background
modern goths are a national treasure now?
you just answered yourself
Lol
Then they’d go back to worshipping MCR…
I feel like this is the same logic why people say Jimi Hendrix is overrated
I personally love his stuff, but I get the argument
lmao
lana del rey annoys the shit outta me
im sorry but there is just something there that AAAUGHH
I know, it’s so annoying
bro Taylor Swift
Taylor swift is a good song writer
DONT PUT TAYLOR SWIFT AND GOOD IN 1 SENTANCE
tay tays pretty good but i can see why you think that
indeed
but i still find her overrated af
and her fandom
i dont know whats worse
Swifties or K-Pop Stans
hmm i find Polyphia overrated at times
some of their songs slap but some of them are unlistenable to me
kpop sonetimes goes hard but the fan base ruins it
never really listened to it
but the white girls go crazy after Korean and Asian culture because of them
yea
I agree but I'm still gonna go see them live just to see them play their songs with my own eyes
When something is hyped up more than it should be, the band itself can still be good but just over hyped
And why would it be hyped up more than it should be?
Because people think some bands are way better than how good they actually are
Well not better but like
Yeah
Better
How do you measure how good they are?
if this were a literature discord you'd have 15yos here saying how charles dickens is overrated
💀
Thatd just be a jazz discord or sum
Lmao fr
Alter Bridge/Tremonti
What? 🥲 SOAD is amazing tho I can’t get enough of it every time it comes on it’s a banger
Green Day is an overrated band so is Queen playing Bohemian Rhapsody everyday nah maybe once in a while sure on a car ride with friends sure
That just sounds like you only find Bohemian Rhapsody overrated
And not the band Queen
Yeah
Most of the "x band is overrated" takes are just people who think their cool if they don't go with the norm
Ofc you can dislike a band, but saying "Queen is overrated, I've only heard Bohemian Rhapsody and that's the most experience I've had with the band" is just childish and for some reason people follow it like gospel, which is how the Beatle hatewagon got so popular online
Fantano is a bit of a dickhead but he makes a lot of good points in his new video
You can also make plenty of good points as to why a band is overrated, but I rarely see people doing that
Yeah 99% of the people come in here and say “lolz i find the beatles overrated” and proceed to give no explanation
I can understand why people would not like them because they sound too poppy tho
Depends which records and which parts of the records you listen lol
Go listen wild honey pie and say it sounds poppy 💀
Or yer blues
That's true
limp bizkit is overrated (not really i just think their music is trash)
👉 🚪
I never liked the beatles until I saw Get Back and then it finally clicked for me and fell down a huge rabbit hole. Still not huge on the cheesy early stuff but what a band.
Nah Limp Bizkit get far too much hate because of people's opinions on Fred Durst. They're an incredible group of musicians, each with their own style that fits together well imo
Yeah I think the thing is that people will look at the early stuff which is the poppy boy band stuff and then think “Yeah they’re overrated”
Then again I think the thing is also that the early stuff is what’s always shown the most, along with Abbey Road/Let it Be which was when they basically went back to making poppy stuff
if someone who has just heard bohemian rhapsody thinks queen is overrated then they just have bad taste
no matter how overplayed it is, bohemian rhapsody deserves every bit of attention it gets
it's an excellent composition executed to perfection
Fair
And I mean, the chances that BR is the only Queen song you've ever heard are very low
I wouldn't say Abbey Road and Let it Be are poppy, moreso they are very overplayed albums
Definitely the songs you'll hear the most of
But yeah many people haven't heard rubber soul to white album
I agree
I think the irony is that the poppy stuffy is overplayed because it’s well… more pop friendly
Whereas their middle era stuff kinda isn’t
I haven't heard a lot of the early stuff on the radio and such apart from yesterday
That era has not aged well
It’s like how Teen Spirit became overrated because it was way more pop friendly compared to stuff Nirvana released before and during In Utero
I think people immediately take "overplayed" and turn it into "overrated"
Yeah their early stuff is basically like listening to early rock n roll
I still like it tho
I like some of the early stuff
She Loves You and I want To Hold Your Hand are really dated imo
Super high vocals
Too upbeat
Yeah people also need to realize that “overplayed” and “overrated” doesn’t necessarily mean bad
Mate stairway to heaven is still one of my favourite songs to play on guitar
Can't tell me otherwise
Day Tripper is good tho
You can hear how they were going from early rock n roll to their mid era when they made that
A Hard Days Night has basically been associated with grunge because of the influence that album had on Kurt Cobain
Eh
I think it just their best early stuff
The real transitional album was 100% rubber soul
We should just rename this thread "talk about the beatles"
That's usually what's happening in here anyways
I mean true but I think that Day Tripper was like the transition before the transitional period
If that makes sense
Day Tripper, Ticket to Ride
I feel fine is a little different from their other early stuff too
That’s true too
Like that opening A and how they kind of mute it
Nah there’s other bands that people mention here too, I think we should leave it as is
I was joking anyways lmao
Oh lol
rly? time to order a box set collection
Yes
Who r?
the beetles
The spellings yeah
Uhm
Why tho?
What did they do that was racist and sexist?
Still what did he do that was sexist and racist?
i would send the thing but it has hard r
Dm it to me lol
If you got it that be lmao
Lennon has played with a lot of people of colour ig and was househusband for a while so that his wife could work soooo
“The thing”
i sent in dm’s
I see
Lennon didn’t come up with that
The sentence atleast
He just wrote a song about it
He did an whole interview about that
It’s actually a feminist song lmao
oh damn
i couldnt find an interview or statement about that in the like 30 minutes of me looking lol
I sent you the video where he explains it
Also you might wanna read some of the lyrics of the song after watching the vid
thanks
ill watch latwr tonight
Okay lemme know what you think
Lmfao
Bro comes in here:
- Says the “Beetles” are racists + sexists
- Later on only says John was racist for a song he released during his solo career and not with the Beatles
- Called him racist for a song that was clearly meant to shock people
💀💀
Bro the White Album is so underrated
It SLAPS, even tho it doesn’t flow too well
listen, I love the beatles, favourite band ever, but not one of their albums is underrated
We are talking about the most well known, critically acclaimed group of musicians in the world
That’s fair actually
They’re CONSTANTLY called the best band in the world
Even their more experimental stuff is praised
this is WHY they are known as the best band in the world
No band as big as the beatles was experimenting like that
They completely changed the course of history
The band arguably caused political, religious, and cultural changes in the world too
It’s like saying eggs are so underrated in cooking
They’re literally the most versatile thing there is bro
Lol that was dumb, but I get the point
Yeah they were basically one of the main forces in why the 60s had come through a cultural change
Part of that cultural change was then sudden big shift in music. It’s basically the reason why it only took like 12 years to go from Johnny B Goode to Black Sabbath
If you listen to early 60s music and then listen to the late 60s stuff, there’s a noticeable change
I think one thing that isn’t thought of a lot is that when the Beatles experimented with their music, it made everyone else kinda wanna follow them
Also without listening to the songs explanation or lyrics 💀
trash thread keeps delivering
i've been following the thread since it began, half of it is 13yo kids just arbitrarily shitting on any band that was huge in the 60s, 70s or 80s
Yeah those threads are gadgets but it's not as bad as wrong advices given for thoery or gear
and more recently, beatles = wacists and sexists apparently
Missed this one, but I saw so many dumb thing this week
we r just a bunch of boomers for liking them XD
Yeah with people like that it’s no wonder zoomers get bonked on for doing 0 research on stuff like this
Yup lmfao
I love how it was also a song that was under John’s solo work, but they still list it as a “Beetles” song
Love how anything that was from each members solo work is suddenly a part of the whole bands work
“Guys I love that one Beetles song called Imagine” 🥴
💀 so many people use that song to say he is a bad person. But they don’t actually know what it means or where it came from
rubber soul and white album are great
I mean to some degree he was kinda an ass, but I think the thing about him being a wife beater is a bit exaggerated
Towards the end of his life he definitely had strong love towards Yoko again
As for Cynthia, yeah he basically did neglect her and Julian but still I don’t think he ever really straight out abused them
He was definitely pretentious tho
I mean I don’t know him in his personal life xD
True he was just to busy to have kids and a wife at that point in his life I think Julian also kinda exaggerated it a lot I think tho
I don’t mean with like his personal life
Like his whole hippie peace activist thing was definitely pretentious
I don’t know tbh
I think he believed quite a few of the things he said
I mean maybe he did but honestly it felt like just one of those “I’m rich/famous so I can do whatever the hell I want” thing
He literally did a “protest” where he and Yoko just stayed in bed for days
xD
And of course it was in a hotel
Naked version of Let It Be is my favourite.
Almost feels as the 'intended' version of the record
Much prefer The Long and Winding Road on there too
Reminds me a little of Think by Curtis Mayfield
Hahahah true he did draw attention xD
Ofc it’s better it’s how the record was intended
I feel like he did that before he was famous to 😭
Man probably had a lot of unresolved traumas
That's what I said 😂
Yeah naked version of that song is way better
Idk why but the version that was originally released, I don’t like it
Phil Spector really made it sound like a Disney movie track bruh
I slept like 5 hours and didn’t read it properly sorry 😅
All good 👊
The dudes mother was ran over by a car in front of his home and that's where he had to walk to school everyday
That is definitely traumatic
John lennon was a man who let his Ego take over
But when he wrote music, his ego was pushed away for just a little bit and he really showed his vulnerable side
In interviews hes very pretentious and acts like he's the smartest person in the room, but in his music he lets his gaurd down and shows his true self
His often overlooked debut album "Plastic Ono Band" is a gut wrenching look into a person who is so fed up with everything
He struggled with his ego till the end of his life
That boating trip he went on really changed him and at that point he realised he just wanted to be with his family
It's why there is like only 1 interview between the time of his sailing accident and his death
It's why his death is so heartbreaking to me, because right when he was starting to better himself, he had that chance at redemption snatched by a man who just wanted to be famous by killing John Lennon
I love how this went from us complaining about zoomer coming in and saying the Beatles are overrated to this
Still agreed with what you said tho
Well here’s the thing I like some of their songs it’s their songs that are played over and over again that I hate like bohemian rhapsody or Don’t Stop Me Now
Okay so my point still stands
You only find the song overrated, not the whole band
Yes they are a good band that’s why they are still very popular today but their songs get annoying when over played
All their songs?
True :) you’re 100% right it’s really wel documented everyone who doesn’t judge on first glance knows this :)
I really don't think I can blame the younger generation alone in good faith
I'm a zoomer, I was born in 97 but I still see people half my age love the beatles
Their music is truly timeless and when you get that big you're bound to get a lot of hate
Yeah I’m an 06 baby and I prefer older music, I’m not one of those “born in the wrong generation” kids
I just like older music is all
I love music new and old
Life's too short to get mad at literally nothing
Im glad music isn't the same as it was in the 60s
That would be boring
I think it’s a great time to be born in tbh if you wear born when the music came out you might’ve never heard it at that time
Besides great music is still being made
Yeah and I'd rather live in an era where I can listen to any music I want any time
Lot of "born in the wrong generation" kids seem to forget that they didn't just print all your favorite songs from a band on one album like a playlist
Had to buy a CD/record for it which were pretty expensive, and if you didn't like the album too bad
I don’t use much playlists
