so in other words the popularity was on musical merit first and foremost

i wouldn't call nirvana overrated. they had a lot of bangers and defined a generation

Also dire straits’ self titled is honestly mostly filler. The two songs that stand out are sultans of swing and down to the waterline and all the songs on there honestly just sound like Knopfler trying to make sultans of swing

Part of that cultural change was then sudden big shift in music. It’s basically the reason why it only took like 12 years to go from Johnny B Goode to Black Sabbath

If you listen to early 60s music and then listen to the late 60s stuff, there’s a noticeable change

I think one thing that isn’t thought of a lot is that when the Beatles experimented with their music, it made everyone else kinda wanna follow them

That is definitely traumatic
John lennon was a man who let his Ego take over
But when he wrote music, his ego was pushed away for just a little bit and he really showed his vulnerable side
In interviews hes very pretentious and acts like he's the smartest person in the room, but in his music he lets his gaurd down and shows his true self
His often overlooked debut album "Plastic Ono Band" is a gut wrenching look into a person who is so fed up with everything
He struggled with his ego till the end of his life
That boating trip he went on really changed him and at that point he realised he just wanted to be with his family
It's why there is like only 1 interview between the time of his sailing accident and his death
It's why his death is so heartbreaking to me, because right when he was starting to better himself, he had that chance at redemption snatched by a man who just wanted to be famous by killing John Lennon
