#Why is there an ERS?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
The F1 cars are hybrids - part of their energy comes from the Internal Combustion Engine (burning fuel), part of it comes from a battery.
The ERS is the Energy Recovery System - it allows them to harvest some energy from the brakes (kinetic energy) and exhaust gases in the turbocharger (heat energy) and use that energy to charge a battery.
The driver can then use the ERS to deploy that energy from the battery and make the car go a bit faster.
The driver controls the ERS with his steering wheel buttons using preset modes - allowing him to choose when to harvest energy and when to deploy it (giving the car a boost)
It can get quite strategic when a driver is trying to overtake or defend - they need to choose the right moment around the lap to deploy the boost, and make sure they dont run out of battery.
