theres 3 practice sessions on normal race weekends with only one on sprint weekends what it does is basically gives the drivers and teams a chance to get used to the track compared to the finding in the sim before the weekend and keep tweaking the setup to get it as good as possible they also run different plans on fuel loads tire plans and run distances just to get all the data they might need for the weekend

last that I've heard the drivers and teams have limited test days on track where they are able to drive their current car one of those days is the cars shakedown which is either on the day of their car launch or just after otherwise there are limited pirelli tyre tests which the tracks vary but they wont have any practice on the next race track before fp1 unless its on the sim

The time between two GPs is described in Article 10 of the Formula 1 Sporting Regulation (Track running time outside a competition). The Basic rule is - this is not allowed except you get the explicit permission by the FIA to do practices outside the competition weekends. For that you have to differentiate between

  • Current Cars (2024)
  • Previous Cars (2023/22/21)
  • Historic Cars (2020 and before)

Aside that, every competitor has 2 Promotional Events (PE) with 200km max. and 2 Demonstration Events (DE) with 15 km max. for current cars or 50 km max. for older cars. Both PE and DE must be done with special tyres and come with additional restrictions, so none of these Events can be used for propper "practicing".
