I was watching cool down room highlights and saw numbers above names (for example max verstappen and number 1) and I just don't know what they mean

It could be two things, either the position they’ve finished, or their personal driver number. Each driver gets a number which identifies them on their car- e.g, Norris is number 4, Alonso 14. This number sticks with them their whole career, and is reserved for them for two seasons after they retire (e.g Vettel’s 5 is unavailable until 2025). Max has 33 but because he’s the reigning wdc, he can also choose to use 1- 33 is reserved for him until he needs or wants to use it again
