All the units in Alaska were reformed into the 11th AB division as well, like hell we’d even give them an inch of land
there's a reason why we have f-22s stationed in alaska
even if they had enough of their glorified parade float su-57s to try an air attack, they'd be no match for the f-22s
also speaking of the su-57, i love how russia passes of their inability to create stealth aircraft as "intentional" because "stealth will eventually become obsolete so we won't even invest in it"
Eventually yes, but we are talking about the far future where instead of sending blips out to locate objects in the sky we find displacements in the air or something along those lines
If we can detect their aircraft though with our current level of technology then that’s still going to work in our favor

I'm hoping Penny Mordaunt wins
who's that
A minister here, and one of the frontrunners
I'd say with Wallace gone
Sunak, former chancellor
and Mordaunt, former holder of various ministerial/cabinet positions
and the 2 front runners
sunak is more known, penny is more popular with the youth due to being more lgbt-friendly
Tugendhat seems a bit of an early favourite because tbh he's had his campaign ready a while
Other than everyone you've mentioned, I'd say Jeremy Hunt is also a big contender who's a bit more left-wing so should hopefully still help in Ukraine
Nah, he isn't
he's had his campaign ready, but he's a backbench nobody
relatively speaking
Sunaks campaign website is over 6months old
so not just him has been plotting
Ah. Yeah, I saw that with Sunak, I guess even he could see that the ship had sailed then

wow
they got m270s now? nice
Now that we know about the corruption of Russia, does that make the Armata a terrible tank?
Im personally in full support of unmanned turrets
the armata was already a terrible tank because it was way too expensive for russia to ever mass produce, even before the invasion
also it’s broken down twice during victory day parades lmfaooo
Ik
But unmanned turrets are the future imo
Doesn’t the new panther have an unmanned turret feature or am I dumb
unmanned turrets are great and all, but when the tank is so expensive that you can barely afford to produce any it doesn’t really matter
Russia’s economy is weak. If the US was developing a tank with similar specs, cost wouldn’t be an issue
Armata is pretty bad
also the armata still has weak russian armor that relies in single-use ERA
But it gets a decent aps
a completely unproven aps
It’s decent on paper but that doesn’t mean shit
exactly, russia can claim it’s the greatest thing ever all they want but if it can’t reliably stop a javelin or 120mm round it means nothing
and we don’t know if it can
say what you want about abrams, it may be old but the us knows exactly how it’ll perform
Combine that with corruption and we get a recipe for a failed tank design
It does need to be replaced though
Upgrades can’t be done forever
yeah i’ve heard the replacement is in the early stages of development
but i mean very early
I’ve heard too
I’m hoping that ETC gun tech gets better
Those things can be terrifyingly deadly

Definitely, though haven't heard that legalised homosexual marriage is a requirement

Its not a set in stone requirement, but the EU demands high levels of certain aspects

The notable thing is that even Russians admit they can’t de-concentrate their ammo dumps to save them from HIMARS. Their command and control system is overcentralized and they fall short of competent mid-level commanders.
Getting this done will take many months if not years.

Russian World War 2 era T-34 tank plays dead to avoid being sent to Ukraine.
A Moscow court has fined popular Russian YouTuber about $2k for “promoting gay propaganda” by interviewing artist Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich in April 2021. Surely, promoting art as a career is the greater danger to children? https://t.co/KwWZpyKDcu
Valentin u r definitely carrying this thread
Yeah it isn't as lively as it used to be
kinda shows how the whole trend for this war ended
It’s because the war basically turned into a trench war
Because both sides lack the required tank firepower and defense capabilities
That and the fact that people across the globe got tired of it
*artillery war
Good thing is that we're still getting funds and support from many officials of different countries
Yeah arty war
Roscosmos' death may be very, very, very slightly less sad https://twitter.com/nexta_tv/status/1547113121927634944?cxt=HHwWgIC9vf_LufgqAAAA
like HIMARs that we got are doing gods work
Those himars are just cheating man
I’m all for it
with each day being a few succesful tries at fucking demolishing russos ammunition storages
I'd personally say that we reached a tilting point in all this, with cases slowly turning in benefit for Ukraine
There might even be a counter-offensive to take Kherson back later this summer
The war has been in a standstill for a while now
I still think tanks aren’t obsolete
Nobody who knows what they're talking about does
this war just shows you cant go
"haha tank go brrr" and throw 1000 tanks at the enemy
they need to be integrated with infantry and friendly air
ye tanks aren't battlefield carriers, but just a cog in the army
Like every other tool
I see people on twitter wanting to disband all tank units
And it’s draining me
couch strategists
They are so dumb
i stand by my past statements that an armored box with a huge gun on the front will never be obsolete
Hell it doesn’t even have to be armored or have a gun at all and it’ll stay
tanks are fuel guzzlers now
its the air that is the more crucial battle now
and the fight against the air
that may be true but tanks will always be important for ground warfare
In Ukraine? Noooooo….
You couldn’t be further from the truth
Air has done basically nothing in the war
the only "air warfare" going on right now is russian bombers launching cruise missiles from within russia, ukrainian bombers occasionally attacking russian positions, and sometimes helicopters providing cas
it really isn't a huge part of this conflict
However, the fact it isn't huge... is in itself huge
The fact neither side has gained superiority is huge
Day 1, Hotmolsted Airport, whoever you write it
if russia had air superiority
they'd have a huge army landed in and rolling into kyiv before anyone knew what was happening
the gulf war was a masterclass on how to use air power properly, if the russians knew what they were doing, ukraine would've been like that
ukranian air prevented russia landing their transport planes
soo couldn't get reinforcement troops or heavy vehicles
so it was just encircled paratroopers
It’s not just that the air war was one so well (even tho it was) it was also because the Iraqi army was demoralized and relatively primitive
the iraqi army at the time actually wasn't that primitive, they were supplied with tons of soviet-made stuff that was relatively modern for the time
Another reason that they lost was because of terrible leadership, and command and logistics. Saddam Hussein was so paranoid that he made Stalin look like a normal person
true that
ukraine appears to already be using the precision gps-guided shells sent by america for the m777 https://twitter.com/UAWeapons/status/1547230531833716736
#Ukraine: For the first time, a complete M777A2 howitzer was spotted in the hands of the Ukrainian army- unlike the others this one has a full digitization set including GPS & PIK meaning it can fully employ all the advantages of the A2 upgrade, such as GPS guided projectiles.

I feel like that is information we learned back in WWII
In WWI, even
Idk about that, tanks were introduced so late that they didn’t get a good grasp on tank warfare in conjunction with air and ground forces, there were no good anti tank rifles as well and tanks were not as well armored as they were on the lead up to WWII
hard to talk about learned lessons when their military tactic has been nothing but "idfk just send as many people as we have there, that'll do it"
"Tanks with no support suck ass" was learned pretty quickly
Also, I don’t think their tactics were wrong just misplaced, last tank battle we’ve seen was back in Iraq where there was no infantry support in that battle and it was a decisive victory for the better armed side
They probably took the that battle and tried to apply it
Not realizing infantry technology has developed so far that a single soldier with barely any training can take out a well disciplined and trained tank crew with extreme lethality
It’s like the tactics of gunpowder all over again, much like how a peasant can be trained to use a musket and take out a knight the next day, a single soldier can be trained in a single day and take out a well trained tank crew the next
If Iraq had even a fraction of what we gave Ukraine, and the soldiers the same level of training, I don’t think desert storm would have been such a quick war
whether their tactics were incorrect or “misplaced” the point is that russian generals are/were still living 30 years in the past. that likely has something to do with the fact that putin prefers appointing yes-men rather than competent tacticians as generals
Also
Air superiority
In Iraq the coalition had air superiority, in Ukraine, it was mixed
aircraft support helps tanks massively
through targeting and general suppression of enemy units wanting to combat the tanks
its funny, it's been a game of catch up since the 1920s
an infantry rifle could do it, then the armour got too thick, then they made a bigger rifle, then the armour got too thick
From the days of the tankgewehr to the boys anti-tank rifle, to shaped charge like the bazooka and super bazooka, till the modern day with javelin and such
also I assume that means tank on tank
if the coalition. tried to conquer an iraqi city with pure tanks and no infantry, it'd go terribly I'd imagine
they’ve had drones out there for like the entire conflict
the fuck
same
though tbh the new guy would probably not be any different and continue destroying roscosmos' standing

If there was an attack, you'd assume they would immediately divert to nearest NATO airfield

unless a ship somehow got hit, which is incredibly unlikely
although i wouldn't be surprised to hear russian news outlets claiming this was the result of some cutting edge experimental weapon like a dew or hypersonic air-air missile
malaysia arlines flight mh17 was shot down 8 years ago today by the separatists
I remember when Russian media would spend months saying "ackchually it was ukrainian forces, they thought they were gonna shoot down putin's plane"
Our flight to turkey was about a week after it happened, and due to the shooting down, all airlines avoided going into Ukrainian airspace for a while
of course

🪦
I’m honestly surprised that Russia still has tanks left
vintage oppression tanks
though the amount they could actually use is more likely In the 2-5k range
iirc there's about 850 visually confirmed kills
assume the real is say, 50% higher, and you've made a big dent, but certainly not wiped them put5
Most of those are almost non functioning though
Ye
but you can combine multiple non functioning into a functioning

god damn that’s a lot of dead tanks
i’m curious to hear the uk’s take on russian aircraft losses, ulraine claims they’re shot down hundreds of helis and jets but last i checked oryx has less than 100 russian helis and jets combined
of course, aircraft kills are probably on average harder to visually confirm than vehicle kills, but still

haven't kept up with the situation in a while
to me it seems kinda dumb how countries are placing 900 sanctions on Russia and sending military aid to Ukraine
when the money should be going to civilians that are suffering the most
saw in the news the other day that a lot of people who fled Ukraine when the conflict got intense, are being forced back
because they don't have the money to live abroad
is this true?
because if so, sounds stupid as fuck to me how a bunch of money goes into military aid yet civilians aren't getting it
I'm sure it's a lot more complicated than I realise, just wanted to know more so here I am asking questions
I‘m just going to respond to this in a couple of paragraphs:
- Military vs civilian aid
Even if civilian aid doesn’t receive nearly as much attention in the media, a lot of countries have and are providing financial support to the Ukrainian government. Wars are very expensive, and ultimately soldiers, but also public services like schools, fire departments, hospitals etc. need to be paid for. The Ukrainian government is running low on cash, but at least for now most public services seem to be operating to the extent made by possible by the war
Some people do return, yes, both because they choose to and because they‘re not given adequate support in the country they‘ve fled to. Ultimately that‘s very much an issue worth discussing, but a lot of it is due to unnecessary bureaucracy and oversight
The thing about military aid and civilian aid is that they go hand in hand
The hardships of the current situation won’t stop if Russia wins, they‘ll only get worse
And ultimately the only thing keeping Russia from advancing further is the military
You can’t just throw money at something without addressing the root cause
I see, thanks for the long yet simple explanation!
I have trouble understanding things like this so the simplified yet still informative paragraphs were much appreciated
I see
You‘re very welcome!
I‘d also like to add that getting aid to Russian-occupied territories has proven to be very difficult in the past
And then there’s also the whole issue of people being forced into filtrations camps and then being sent to various places in Russia with their preferences being ignored
Russia heavily restricts access to NGOs and humanitarian aid groups
And occasionally violently cracks down on them
So its very hard to provide aid in occupied areas
aka literally send an artillery rain to a humanitarian convoy
A British humanitarian aid worker recently died in detention of the breakaway donbass states... very likely by their hand
They claim he died from "sickness and stress"
If he was actually sick, and you cared about saving his life... you'd have handed him over to the British embassy
Paul Urie, yes
At very best he died from negligence and refusal to care
Most likely he died with a bullet in his head
It was most definitely another case of russian near-death torture, but when the guy dies they do their classic "i don't know what happened, wasn't me"
#Ukraine:A Russian Su-34 strike aircraft was shot down, likely in the vicinity of Alchevsk, #Luhansk Oblast.

they probably had a bunch of cars in stock cuz they're so fucking shit and barely anyone bought them
not surprising its switzerland
mhm
I know that it’s Switzerland but it’s just sort of depressing seeing how far their government and banks going to appease fascists.
In some situations, neutrality stops being a good course of action
switzerland is ridiculously committed to neutrality
i can kind of understand why they'd do this from a foreign policy perspective
i said this once before, switzerland is a prime example of why some people, myself included, tend to hate neutrality in big issues like this
because in clear-cut good vs evil conflicts like this one, they pretend that one side somehow isn't significantly worse than the other
Problem is
In this world
You can't survive as a nation, always supporting moral causes
yeah i know but that doesn't make it any less infuriating
yeah
like with finalnd and sweden having to appease turkey to join nato
Turkey has yet to ratify their NATO bid too
in a situation like ww2 I kinda understand what they did, trying their best to avoid being invaded by Germany without actually siding with them
yeah in ww2 it made sense because they had a real reason to be afraid of siding with the allies
but the thing is this isn't ww2, russia isn't exactly breathing down their necks with arguably the world's strongest military rn
Thing is
If they were to change neutrality for morality
They'd have to apply morality equally
which would put them at odds with NATO from time to time
And if they only cared about morality in times when they aren't opposing NATO... they become a NATO pawn
i don't really care if they want to oppose nato, i'd rather that than their holier than thou neutrality act
(eg: arm sales to saudi arabia)
But switzerland can't oppose NATO
So switzerland either has to become a pawn, or keep its hard neutrality
It's shite but i's the way our geopolitical world is setup :/
wait how can they not oppose nato? not disputing, just curious
Well because what happens when America hears switzerland is providing medical aid to soldiers fighting NATO, or fighting NATO-aligned nations (EG: the moral stance would be to help Yemen, against nato-aligned saudi arabia)
Most likely america slams sanctions and diplomatic pressure switzerland can't really afford
ok that makes sense, didn't think of that
Let the Swiss stay neutral, it’s not their war to fight. neutrality worked for them so far, even while they were bordering the very nations at war with one another in both WWI and WWII
i understand some of the reasons why switzerland wants to stay neutral from the discussion above, but "it's not their fight" isn't really a valid argument when the same can be said for nations like the us, uk, canada, france, and australia who are all pitching in despite it "not being their fight", before the war started they owed nothing to ukraine yet they all became major contributors
also i won't claim to know too much about this topic but i've heard a lot of people who seem fairly credible saying stuff about switzerland's continued neutrality also being due to corruption and unwillingness to go against the russians who have influence there or something
idk wouldn't surprise me
Sounds more like jingoism, if you can’t convince a nation to aid in the war, call them out for being corrupt and being under the influence of the enemy
Rather NATO’s near-peer threat
i mean their banking sector doesn't exactly have a clear track record to say the least
again i won't claim to be an expert on this stuff but the information i've read seems pretty credible
I feel like banking and bad history with not so ideal clients go hand and hand
idk, ever since i looked into the whole banking corruption thing i haven’t exactly been sold on the whole “switzerland is a morally invincible paragon” narrative that some people push (not saying you do, saying some other people do)
They’re not some morally invincible paragon, they’re just neutral
https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1549178478301519880?s=21&t=702xA8t15sr5dI_iS2d5YA
Can Turkey pick a side please
yeah but some people i’ve come across act like they are because they’re neutral
again, no one here
mhm
also the way switzerlands welfare treats poor people, thats a fucking yikes, and definitely shatters any perception of moral invincibility
fuck erdogan
Limits on leaving the country, control of all income, forcing people to work manual labour for $100 per month, and every penny in welfare is debt to the state
Russian President Vladimir #Putin’s likely effort to shield ethnic Russians from high levels of mobilization may trigger resistance in some of the ethnic enclaves that seem to be disproportionately bearing the burden of war.

can’t tell if it’s supposed to be pro- or anti-shootdown
it won't load 😔
Difficult to tell but the day of/before the shootdown DNR channels claimed it was an Antonov military transport plane so I’d say anti?

it’s a drawing of an airliner and an approaching missile that was uploaded today
it’s obv meant to be mh17, can’t tell if it’s celebrating or mourning it tho
the same guy uploaded something a couple months ago that was pretty clearly anti-invasion so i’m guessing it’s the latter
ah
i think it's like a remembrance thing
i’ve looked through some of his more recent stuff and at least 3 things seem to be anti-invasion so yeah it’s probably that
