prolly more a quid pro quo
but no love lost with the west
anyway im back briefly
was reading an article in the private eye about a British-Israeli figure called Ehud Sheleg.
An extract from an old eye article which can be found on Ehud Sheleg's bio on Wikipedia
"Our special report earlier this year revealed not just Sheleg's close relations with Moscow, hosting Russia’s ambassador at the height of post-Crimea-invasion sanctions in 2015, but also his major deal with organised-crime-connected figures in establishing a Cyprus outlet of Halcyon the same year. At a minimum, due diligence appears not to be Sheleg’s strong suit. The Eye’s report also showed how Sheleg's Halcyon company had filed erroneous accounts (not great for a party treasurer), and how in 2009 it had liquidated one of its subsidiary companies (high street art chain Castle Galleries), walking away from £4m of debts and simply carrying on the business under a new company."
- anyway Ehud seems to have made £450,000 donations to the Tory party, followed by another donation of £750,000 and then a further £10,000 donation to Brandon Lewis the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
Furthermore Sheleg seems has links with Sergei Nikolaevich Kopytov - a minister in the Crimean government under president Viktor Yanukovych from 2013-2014.
One of many instances of corruption within the British government embezzling Russian oligarch or pro-Russian Ukrainian oligarch money
A lot of wealth seems to have vanished from Ukraine which can't be accounted for from the devastation or migration caused by the ongoing war.

⚡️Russians say occupied parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts will switch to Russian phone code.
Kremlin-controlled news agency Ria Novosti reported, citing Russian occupiers in the regions, that a new mobile operator has begun working in the occupied territories.
^ that's very concerning
this isn't good
wait what’s so bad about that? what difference does it make?
genuinely curious, not saying it isn’t a problem or anything
This shows that they started converting the claimed Ukraine area into Russia area
I think this confirms that they want to extend their borders and make it officially Russia's terrain than doing something else
i mean i thought that was already kinda obvious

Russian state TV has just told viewers that Ukraine using these long-range rocket systems will amount to the US "crossing a red line"
(with subtitles)

yeah, I have a feeling these will be used for attacks on russian soil
I was le stupid and forgot to save a thread I was reading earlier
but, dependent on which missile is sent, the range is 70 / 300km
more then enough to do cross-border raids
and 300km is from the front line to sevastopol
ukraine has every right to attack russian soil, as long as it’s not civilians they’re targeting
mhmm
Sadly, Russian civilians will likely be hurt, as is the nature of war
but as long as the targets are legal military ones, and they take adequate precautions against collateral, they have a legal and moral right to fight russia on its soil
himars has pinpoint accuracy so hopefully they can avoid civilian casualties
Let’s hope that the Russians don’t take hostages of their own people
all the more reason to be happy the us are doing that
Now we live in hope it'll beat the russians into submission
they've described literally everything as crossing a red line
russian government when they see another country (it's scary)

Germany at Nato is wondering whether violence can be fought with violence (quoting Scholz…)

i’m sick of this bullshit high and mighty pacisift rhetoric from germany. i get that they don’t want people to think back to the 1930s, but they need to get their act together asap. as long as putin wants a war, he’s got a war. a war that’ll send shockwaves throughout his country and set it back decades.
i don’t mean to sound like a warmonger or anything, but there comes a point where you have to stand up to countries like russia and fight for what’s right
we didn’t get here by allowing nazi germany to conquer europe
No country cares about what's right
its not about that, never has been, to governments
Supporting ukraine is a political and stregical decision, for them
even, then, it still makes sense for germany to help ukraine from a strategic pov

ah yes of course
tbf, I don't doubt poland wants parts of Ukraine... but the chance of them acting on it in any way is 1 in a billion

⚡️Putin extends age limit for joining Russian military.
Under the new law, signed by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on May 28, Russians under 50 are entitled to sign their first contract for military service. Prior to that, the age limit was under 40.

There were significant feuds between Poles and Ukrainians in the borderlands before WW2, with targeted killings taking place on both sides, and the Soviet Union later exploited those tensions by limiting cross-border tensions and spreading various stereotypes about Poles in Soviet Ukraine, most of which centered around purported criminal behaviour. Polish-Ukrainian relations only really improved in the 70s and 80s, and after the fall of the Soviet Union of course

NEW: The Biden administration is likely to announce the approved decision to send long-range M31 GMLRS multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine, U.S. media reported referring to well-informed sources. https://t.co/oxmRzrmjEi
1093
193
on a related note, if you see headlines that say "BIDEN ABANDONS UKRAINE BY REFUSING TO SEND LONG-RANGE ROCKET SYSTEMS!!!!!!!!!", don't listen to them. biden doesn't want to send the extened range rockets, but he's alright with sending the 70km versions that can't reach russian soil as easily. he understandably doesn't want american-made weapons attacking russian soil (at least not yet)
with how much support the administration is giving ukraine you can't be too mad if they're apprehensive about something
^
and yeah, not wanting to send weapons which will primarily be used on russian soil
makes 100% sense
as all it takes is one misfired missile hitting a civilian target aaaaand we have a major international crisis
because we sure do hit civilian targets, yup
i get it though, it's a matter of precaution
Not accusing you of doing so deliberately
but when using explosive weapons of war... there's never a 0% chance
shrapnel launched half way across a city, missile targeting failure, civilian in the wrong place at the wrong time
in war it happens
even though the us and/or nato would curbstomp russia in their current state, we still don’t want armed confrontation and american munitions falling in russia could be a big escalation
especially if they end up killing civilians
Yeah
when was the last time america was worried about killing civilians
but being able to plaster the face of a dead child everywhere heightens what geopolitics russia can pull
that’s also what i mean, american bombs on russia soil is kinda a big deal regardless of who’s using them
yeeep
but like i said before, american mlrs is extremely, extremely accurate compared to russian mlrs. if, god forbid, they’re used on russian soil, there’s a much smaller chance of civilian deaths
unless they send cluster rockets, in which case goodnight irene
yeah but america doesn’t subscribe to the anti-cluster bomb treaty 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
The treaty banning cluster bombs is only signed up to by about 50% of nations
Ukraine, Russia and the USA all aren't signatories
i assume it would still be very frowned upon
ok so like tbe entirely of the western world
The treaty was only made in 2008
only a few years earlier, the west used a truely frightening amount of cluster munition in the wars in the middle east
and did a huge amount of collateral damage with it, as well as causing damage to this day
i imagine that if they sent it america would look even worse in the eyes of russia
Yeah
It being banned by half the world, including most of nato
puts pressure not to use it
or, at least, stick to only using them in conflicts the media doesn't talk about much
probably because they had to go up against american cluster bombs not once but twice in like 10 years
highway of death moment
somalia somehow signed it
@fierce arch Purple is signed and ratified
Blue is signed but not yet ratified
Pink is accepted but not formally signed yet
yeep
And they see people to this day get killed by then
children commonly mistake unexploded cluster bombs as toys
and that ends about as well as you can expect
diplomats where probably bored one day
thankfully though, modern cluster bombs like the cbu 97 are at the very least design minimize civilian casualties as much as possible, unlike older ones that just said “fuck it, you dig this up that’s your problem and not mine”
but still, they shouldn’t be used anymore
I mean, yeah, since Ukraine borders Russia, technically any weapon can be used on Russian soil unless it has a miraculous range of 0km
i maant moreso the concept of ukraine retaliating against russia w/ attacks on russian soil
well its already happened a few times

I'll watch the video later but that idea seems very very cursed
also he called ukraine and Russia Europe's two biggest country
my inner geography nerd is amgery
Well, ig if you add asterisk only counting land inside europe it's correct

but that would mean Turkey is smaller then estonia
and that isn't useful for anyone
Johnson has proposed a "European Commonwealth" of the UK, Ukraine, Poland, Baltic States & later Turkey that would be an "alternative to the EU [for] countries united by distrust of Brussels and Germany's response to Russian aggression", reports @Corriere https://t.co/9F8ZLitmVM
686
432
Primary source for this seems to be Corriere Della Sera, a Milan based daily newspaper
I don't know what its reputation is like wrt truthfulness/factuality
But yeah, as a brit, I can't emphasise strongly enough how much I hate that idea
the commonwealth of europe, like in fallout
It hasn't been repeated by any other paper
british or otherwise
which makes me doubt its authenticity
so basically the eu but instead of germany being in control of everything its the uk
lmao
hell yeah taking british taxpayer money instead
i haven't watched the video yet but i'm like 99% sure its that
What the british wont do to ignore France
which im sure the baltics would love being a part of
european politics are so complicated
Like lets be real if you ask any country “wanna join the eu or the mock eu” they’re gonna go with the eu
that sounds super redundant
like nato exists
Poland and the EU have a.... very bad relationship
Because poland wants to do fascism things and the EU gets amgery at them
Pwease can we do fascism 🥺
Hungary and Poland are in the same situation
“No”
It baffles me that hungary is still in the eu tbh
nato already is pretty lenient with dictators
Like Mobutu for example
to kick a nation out of the EU requires a unanimous vote
Poland protects Hungary
Mmm
Hungary protects Poland
Sounds like a grade A loophole
unanimous decisions sometimes make no sense to me
especially if you're talking about something as big as the eu
Youd think they just do a unanimous vote instead
Well, yeah, thats what it is
Wait do poland and hungary have vetos?
Cuz like if most eu countries just say “fuck off” it doesnt matter if they protect one another right?
well in a unanimous vote basically every country has a veto
A unanimous vote means it requires a 100% vote
💀 thats stupid
unanimous makes sense in some situations
allowing a new nation into a military alliance
Yeah but it shouldnt be required to kick em out again
having a threesome
True
lmao
Unanimous votes are important for those
geopolitical threesomes

Thats an L
Tbf the alt right didn't really exist 20y ago
The name European Commonwealth makes it seem like to me, London wanted to grab power in Europe instead of just a normal alliance. The idea of the alliance isn’t a bad idea, but I have a feeling there more to it than just an alliance
I like how the video brings up, who’s allowing Ukrainian Refugees….oh it’s the EU not the UK
Yeah UK the commonwealth proposal is pretty sus ngl
Yep
Its a pure powergrab
The tories here have been massively exploiting this war for their own, primarily domestic, political benefit
and this is a continuation

Technically there’s already the JEF
true
but thats mostly joint military co-operation and training
rather then a formal alliance / integrated economic block structure
Yup, though I think it’s something worth putting more effort into
Whether it’s authentic or not, I highly disagree with Johnson‘s proposal
And the mentioned choice of countries is… questionable to say the least
Plus the intentions behind it aren't good
i wouldnt trust johnson with a glass of water he'd drown someone with it
In good news Johnson maybe be about to be yeeted by his own party
Oh thank god
if 54 Conservative party MPs write a letter of no confidence, there is an election held for the new leader
Ooh nice
currently ~30 have done, and theres about 20 or so suspected
(they don't have to make it public)
Some MPs announce it, but I imagine a few just do it quietly and keep their heads down
if the threshold is hit, theres a vote for who will become the new conservative party leader
Assuming bojo loses, then either the new leader will become PM, or there'll be a general election early
Ohh, thank you for the explanation!
you're welcome!
The current odds give Jeremy Hunt the highest chance of being the new leader
Followed by Liz Truss, then Tom Tugendhat
Tbh I think that the tensions between Germany and the Baltic states could be quite easily solved if the government wanted to
And the same goes for other European countries like France
mhmm
creating a new rival european power block to split europe in half

I don‘t think they will tbh
european commonwealth is some hoi4 level shit
They certainly might reconsider arms deliveries and the like, but especially in Sweden freedom of speech is highly valued, with all the associated consequences
turkey shouldn't get any arms deliveries from the west
they're no better then russia
Agreed
And one of their demands was also them supporting Turkey‘s combat operations in the Middle East
Which is a no-go too
special combat operation :)
Erdogan is just being a bitch rn
Probably because he thinks Finland and Sweden bowing to his demands will result in some kind of domestic victory
I haven’t checked Swedish media on this yet so I’ll probably check later or tomorrow
out of curiosity, has the dod given any reasons for why they're sending the himars over m270s? i know that both have different strengths and weaknesses, i just wonder if there was any rationale behind the decision besides cost
BREAKING: Germany will supply Greece with infantry fighting vehicles. This will allow Greece to supply Soviet era equipment to Ukraine
8138
1125
Senior Biden admin official tells reporters tonight that Ukraine has provided assurances it won't use the new longer range rockets the US will provide them against targets inside Russia
grow a fucking spine, germany, stop making the equipment transfer unnecessarily long and complicated
I mean I guess it's better than nothing
but yeah...
and Ukraine getting NATO equipment, even older NATO equipment, might be better as that equipment was designed specifically to counter what the Russians are using
aren't they supposed to be the leaders of free europe?
they sure as shit aren't acting that way
its all a political game
They're acting in a way that keeps them leaders of Europe
by trying to keep le status quo
I mean, why has ukraine applied to the EU
Or georgia, or moldova
fear of Russia
fear of russia prompts EU growth and expansion
Ending the Russian threat, or massively weakening it, removes thats fear and that force for expansion
which works against Germanys interests
Germany is trying to uphold the status quo, with minimal personal involvement, is their game here
Do I like that this is the case? No, I hate it
But if we're analysing the way the world works, we can't forget that stuff is much more complex then "russia bad, beat russia good"
i know that basically all nations helping ukraine are only doing so because there's strategic value in weakening russia, but i still loathe how germany is choosing to sabotage their war effort by not sending equipment for their own personal gain
like i know that all nations act selfishly in these scenarios, but that doesn't make it any less infuriating
yep
I hate the way the geopolitical world works
Doesn't have to be built this way, but sadly, it is
Germany with ukraine infuriates me, Turkey with kurdistan infuriates me, America with Israel infuriates me, Britain with Saudi infuriates me
the arms trade and industry is immorality and human lives traded for money and political gain all the way down
can you really compare what germany is doing to the other 3
The scales are significantly different
that is true
probably should have found some closer examples
Germany probably has to jump through extra hoops in order to supply Ukraine with weaponry considering their history
it looks bad when a country sends state of the art equipment to a country that is not Allied, while their actual allies, which could be in danger within the next couple decades, have been using equipment that is extremely outdated
Biden opinion article in the NYT, here are some of the important quotes-
Biden- "I’ve decided that we will provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine."

From what I’ve read some German officials are afraid of seeing images of German-made tanks fighting Russian vehicles being published
Tbf arms deliveries to other NATO countries haven’t been an issue, it’s more that Germany is neither capable nor willing of the sustained deployments other countries ask for
You have to keep in mind that a lot of military equipment, from tanks to helicopters to airplanes, is not operational, and some units have to keep borrowing equipment from other battalions because there isn’t enough for everyone
And yes, there is a funding issue here, but at the same time I suspect that the current funding is not used as well as it could be either, considering how much money is spent on random consultants
I truly don’t know why the Russian govt bothers with this trash. It would be impossible for the combined forces of NATO, Ukraine, and George Soros to cook up something more embarrassing for the Kremlin than this pile of shit video.

⚡️Wall Street Journal: Traders outsmart sanctions to supply Russian oil to US.
The oil is being concealed in blended refined products such as gasoline, diesel and chemicals, while traders obscure its origins to keep it flowing, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Fuels believed to be partially made from Russian crude landed in New York and New Jersey in May, according to the newspaper. The U.S. and U.K. imposed an embargo on Russian oil in March, while the European Union introduced a partial oil embargo in May.

How do the Swiss have so much money ?
I mean it... makes sense
If switzerland made a missile, sold it to france... then france handed it to some terrorists who fired it at the white house
Theyve sold it
I get what you mean
but they belong to denmark
fuck politics, all my homies hate politics
the UK in the falklands nearly sunk french ships supplying weapons to argentina
they had plans drawn up for it and were seriously considering it
believe it or not, people don't like it when you're involved in a supply chain to their enemy
switzerland wants control over where its guns are used
I wonder How much fire Power the Uk would need to sink all of France
almost every country in the world has laws the same as switzerland on this
Charlotte
but why can they block the shipment, why can’t denmark say “fuck off, we do what we want”
Im not against you
Physically, they can, but then switzerland just says
It's just stupid
"Okay no more arms sales for you"
its sold under agreement
"you can buy our guns as long as you use them in line with the contract"
The law makes perfect sense imo 🤷♂️
ok this makes a little more sense now. i was under the impression that switzerland was physically stopping the shipment, like it had to go through them or something
hm there's an active outbreak in a region, I will not ship my medicine there
german made vehicles that have been sold to other nations, cant be transferred to ukraine without berlins green light
however, i will say that if denmark is really that worried about losing swiss weapons shipments, i think the us would be more than happy to backfill their reserves
tbf it's... not as simple as that
It's a major diplomatic thing, and probably a violation of law
and would lead to massive diplomatic issues between the two nations
Hopefully true, but yeah I'm concerned too

What caused the Russo-Ukrainian War? This video tackles that question in four phases. First, we examine the substantive reasons Russia invaded Ukraine. Second, I explain why those reasons are collectively a half-cause for war. Third, we switch gears to discuss bargaining problems...
Military leaders and senior tsarist officials agreed before the war that Russia was a much stronger nation and had little to fear from the Empire of Japan. The fanatical zeal of the Japanese infantrymen astonished the Russians, who were dismayed by the apathy, backwardness, and defeatism of their own soldiers.

ukraine chipping away at russian fortifications while russia makes minimal progress in the donbas region
i worry that this situation will devolve into a territorial dispute akin to what was happening in crimea
It will more than likely become a stalemate, and either Ukraine agrees to give up these regions, or the days following Russian withdrawal, Ukraine will push in and take their territory back
As long as they continue to hold their land, and keep getting supported by the west, Ukraine will hold out
Eventually one side will break

Theres significant shortages of oil here

(as in, the factory he works at, he doesn't own a factory)
ay
the middle east/africa is where the big food concern comes from
The UN is taking the food shortage on the horizon very seriously
Egypt gets more then 50% of its wheat from ukr/russia
Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria, South Sudan are the most vulnerable IIRC
not to mention Russia is the largest exporter of fertilizers
oh great
and a shortage of Russian fertilizer will make it more difficult for countries to become self-sufficient growing their own food.
tl;dr the UN needs to intervene to ensure wheat and sunflower oil can be exported out of the black sea ports of Odessa...
whether that's feasible I don't know
the black sea is mined up
Problem is... what can you do
if theres russian ships sat outside ports
in territorial waters
and land transport of agricultural produce from Ukraine is not realistic, considering a shortage of oil supply.
The UN has been facing this issue for decades in Cuba, how to stop a blockade that is harming civilians
There's a remote possibility for foreign powers to strong arm Ukraine and Russia into some form of ceasefire, but it would require near unanimous international support.

This is Perch (his call sign), 27. He stole an enemy's armored personnel carrier (chased it on an old Soviet car), took down an assault helicopter. While he was saving 11 wounded, he was heavily wounded himself.
Speedy recovery, Perch! Superheroes are nothing compared to you.

After 100 days of Putin's unprovoked, barbaric invasion of Ukraine, let's remember the forest and trees. Putin is winning a few battles now. He may win more. But he has lost his war already. 1/ THREAD

That post doesn't specify, but i think it's a compilation gathered through many regions. Main point is that, despite calling themselves a fucking righteous army/country, they just don't care for any church, not even Moscow Patriarchate

@copper monolith
well, at least it's better then russia
i find it just plain idiotic to have such sanctions against venezuela and cuba nowadays, thats why theyve been driven away from the west
like
castro moved to work with the soviets after the us blockaded cuba and refused to work with em
I hate the cuban embargo, the venezeulan government is certainly a shitty one, thoooough yeah most of the sanctions don't really help
they mostly just fuck over civilians of the country
mhmm
working with the nations (ven/cuba) governments would be... far more effective, if the real concern was actually for the wellbeing of the people
i find most of the sanctions for russia are strategic so it hurts the rich a ton
source, the billions russia lost in overseas assets
ye
and there has been a pretty decent amount of concern given to minimising impact on everyday citizens
not perfect of course, but these sanctions have been handled a lot better then most
im like 99% sure the cuban embargo still exists just because they want to keep tradition
I haven’t seen my wife since the war started, so I came to visit her in a little town in southern France, where she’s been living since before the Feb. 24 invasion (I suspected the full-scale war would happen, so she left Ukraine ahead of time)… 1/
