In most of Ukraine, Russia's war effort is slowing.
But in Lysychansk, that is all a world away. It is here that Russia is pushing its Donbas offensive the hardest, concentrating its forces and slowly but surely moving forward.

#Ukraine: The Russian side for the first time claimed the targeting of US-supplied M777A2 howitzers in Pidhirne, #Donetsk Oblast. Firstly, a ZALA KYB loitering munition was used, but given the distance of the impact and weak explosive payload it caused minor damage at best.

If Russian forces ājust retreat across the border to Russia,ā there is no reason to think most Russians would accept that as a victory. If that happens, Putin would likely lose power, or at least face heavy domestic pushback, which is why he didnāt do that on Victory Day.

short analysis of the t-90m footage, it appears that the tank was actually destroyed by another tank and not a carl gustaf. it seems more likely that it was immobilized by a carl gustaf, and either a russian tank destroyed it to prevent its capture or a ukrainian tank destroyed it to prevent the russians from recovering and repairing it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjx_GMLF--Y
Many of you are probably aware that Russia lost the T-90M tank, which is currently the most modern tank in their arsenal. This is kind of a big deal because, up until that point, Russia has only been using cheaper upgrades of old T-72 and T-80 tanks, while the T-90M is supposed to be a much more expensive and advanced vehicle.

Discussions are reportedly ongoing over whether Ukraine can retake Russian-occupied regions of Crimea and Donbas.
709
can (physically), can (diplomatically), and should, are 3 separate very complex questions wrt crimea/occupied donbass
Diplomacy has been set aside with the end of negotiations
Should is not even a fucking question, they're occupied territories, taken from us illegally, we have to take them back
The only valid question i see now if we can actually have enough power to actually strike russos out of there
another reason as to why should we even liberate those comes from a post earlier
Ehh, it's more complicated then that
There are a significant amount of people living there who do genuinely wish to be independent/be with russia
and I'm absolutely not saying the region shouldn't be ukranian, or justifying the annexation
but there MUST be thought and consideration and steps taken to take the minority wishes into account
and not as simple as just "retake add back to ukraine with same status as every other area"
an increased degree of autonomy as well as a form of power sharing / co-operation between the two ethnic groups is likely a good first step
as well as a non-legally binding census of the views of people living in crimea, and the people who left during the invasion in 2014
crimea was already incredibly autonomous iirc
ah, good
(Just to clear up. I'm not meaning to say russia was justified at all, the invasion and annexation was just a militaristic power grab by russia with the citizens as an excuse. Just contrasting the very black and white views I see of people online that miss all nuance and necessary consideration that needs to be put into this)
And, as often in international politics, the legality of the action is far from the whole story
anyway it sleep time now so I'll leave the late night rambling there
Surely, but how do you imagine us doing that while we're still not in control of the territory?
Right now the question of de-occupation is primary, everything else will be solved after it
you're acting as if our goals this entire war were nothing more but "get land back, fuck people"
We remember Crimea. And we will never forget 1944 - the genocide of Crimean Tatars committed by the Soviet authorities. And 2014 - the second wave of destruction of everything free on the Crimean peninsula.

This might sound like a dumb question and I doubt any of you know the answer but how are the Russian prisons not full yet yk? Must be packed with so called terrorists
we don't know about the situations in prisons, and many people are too afraid to speak up
I mean, I assume they just build a lot of prison space
Time to do a quick google
First article i found https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.euronews.com/amp/2021/02/08/russia-protests-moscow-prisons-overcrowded-after-weeks-of-arrests

USA
wait really?
America has over 2 million prisoners
blimey, land of the free more like land of the freen't
A lot
America has a lot of private prisons
which have agreements with the state for minimum amount of prisoners
They intentionally lock people up for minor offences so they can make money off them
Anyway off topic
fascinating, and terrible
So my father send this in the family group chat with the text "Russians liberating Ukrainians". Can someone tell me whats being said?
For context he is mostly believes all msm is lying about everything and that the opposite is then true. Also he believes the russian propaganda and that the moonlanding is fake, that covid is being faked and that there is a secret organisation behind it
among other things
tell your dad I got covid, put me in quarantine for 2 weeks and I didnt even get a dime from the shadow government
wow, got an email today from Open Collective, a non-profit that runs as an umbrella company providing legal infrastructure for charities / other money management
Their 1k project, which provides in-need Ukranian families with $1000 each, raised 5.4million dollars
crazy amount of money donated
hell yeah
I've used OC to donate before so I get semi-regular emails about their successes š
very nice to recieve
the fucking opening line is literally "russian liberators in LPR are freeing people from ukrainian nazis"
About what I expected from him
the whole video is about them rescuing this family from a "mined" house
don't know man but the entire thing looks awfully staged
ah, of course
That makes total sense to do
ye, even allow foreigners join
if theres an over 40s military while there would be more people with experience, it would be a damn guarantee that there will be an abundance of people who arent combat effective
unless people who are far from their prime are there main target then go ahead
mhmm
would be fine if like, they were soldiers for many years
and trained to keep their skills
but yeah this will be 40 year olds who havent served since age 20 being coerced into joining a suicide mission
Hey that reminds me of this other army that used children for soldiers, oh man cant remember the name, it was around 1944
(They're removing upper age limits)
Yeah, I doubt most of them are reservists
not younger
Oh
Also, being entirely fair, ukraines allowing people a lot older then 40 to join
Yep
mfw both ukraine and russia have higher minimum age for soldiers then the uk
Though they donāt give out guns to the elderly as my grandpaās friend in Kyiv bitterly told him

Mariupol fell to Russian forces on May 16, 2022. Why is this such a big deal? Why did Russia want it so badly? What does it tell us about what Putin wants out of this war? And what are the strategic risks for Russia? In short, the near-complete destruction of the city indicates a...
POV: You send in a huge force on an invasion analysts said "would take a week", 2 months later you've mass retreated with minimal gains and massive economic and material losses
š
The art of war
To be fair, war has changed so much that even the United States might have a hard time against a determined force, they are not dealing with minimally equipped militia like we did in the the last few years in the Middle East, theyāre dealing with a nation that utilizes significantly modern weaponry, stuff like drones, thermal detection systems, smart missiles, even tanks and helicopters, their old doctrines no longer hold up. we have seen the tank become an economic liability and the infantry regain the title of the queen of battle. On top of that the level of reporting is on a different level compared to the US involvement in Afghanistan, in the few months since Russia invaded, we have seen about as much videos of it as we did in about a year during Afghan. Russia is completely fucked in this war, and I hope a peace agreement can be decided before the end of the year
regarding seeing videos, yeah this is probably the most documented war in human history, nearly every soldier has a smartphone with which they can take videos and upload to tiktok/telegram, so it's very easy to see some of the losses on both sides
i feel like ukraine would probably have been curbstomped if russian forces actually knew what they were doing
like the opening days of the gulf war are how this war probably should have looked if the russians were competent
not to discredit ukraine or anything, but on paper the russian military is significantly stronger
of course, this war has shown us that when your generals are all incompetent yes-men, that means nothing
Yea, the Russians are going off 90s doctrines of elimination of anti air assets, quick precise strikes via air assault units against strategically important places like what was seen in the gulf war, the only difference is much has changed in 30 years that now the advanced technology from the 90s is available for these countries, these anti air assets are no longer giant vehicles that give off heat signatures the size of the sun, but a random dude that was given an American leased modernized stinger, the anti tank assets are now capable of easily piercing most armor from a mile away
This is like a repeat of foreign involvement in the Spanish civil war, where both sides were leased items to see which of the two sticks were stronger, except we know our weapons are easily capable of piercing near-peer threats
Except theres a lot less men going over
its mostly just sending fancy guns to their men
The Ukrainian trees are stronger than the Russian twigs
i think the real reason isn't as much "war has changed" as it is that this war is particularly unique, and that few armies are not designed to fight in these environments
ukraine has seen more urban warfare than perhaps any other war in history, save for ww2 and ww1
i don't think that the russian military can't compete with guerrilla tactics, i think its the opposite
the russian military can't compete with an actual organized military
SunTzu
sadly but 1 tree in that forest is a neo nazi so we have to burn the whole thing down :)

When Russia invaded Ukraine, one of the reasons cited was the need to 'demilitarise' Ukraine and prevent the expansion of NATO.
In doing so, it convinced the nations of Finland and Sweden to break with long traditions of non-alignment with military alliances (and strong public support for that stance) and apply to join NATO.

i think this helicopter is a quite a beautiful design, shame its being used by a country like Russia
Sadly a lot of the time the nicest military tech belongs to the worst countries
as what makes then the worst is what they do with the tech :p
...well, you also have like Sweden, who builds beautiful tech thats makn purpose is "hide in forest incase the Russians get any ideas"
western helicopters are far better than russian helicopters, but iāve always thought that russian helicopters looked way cooler than western ones. especially the hind, itās a real shame such a gorgeous machine has been used for evil deeds for so long
i feel a similar way about planes like the backfire and flanker, beautiful designs that frequently end up on the wrong side of history

#Ukraine: Apparently, Ukrainian forces used one more tank from a monument in #Mariupol- here we see an ancient T-54 tank, which was moved from its original place in Azovstal and was used as a "defensive position". However it is unclear if it was towed or got there on its own.

desperate times call for desperate measures
i guess it explains why they were destroying those t-34 monuments, everyone was saying they were dumb for doing it but apparently it actually made sense
it does make sense but i doubt they actually destroyed tank monuments before for strategic action
ehhh
it won't be for strategy
like, putting a t-34 back in action is... a waste
I mean, the guns useful
but the armour can be destroyed by any number of handheld weapons
interesting to see if this has... any real effect
yeah, I can only imagine them doing it in Mariupol out of being desperate
in ww2 in the battle of Berlin Germany pressed a lot of museum tanks into service
I mean, read closer
didn't really achieve much
i don't understand how that works but sure
????
Well they're defenders in mariupol
so presumably they just stuck the tank in a defensive ditch/wall and used the gun
that's what i tried to say
thus they didn't use the tank directly
but for a defensive position
which isn't tank combat

it makes it a stationary gun enplacement, specially cause its not able to move from the spot tanks by definition are able to move on their own else its just a fancy piece of towed artillery
and as you said, the guns are still useful the armor isnt so digging it in a defensive position to just use the gun is a great move when faced with limited resources

do you have any idea how much grain russiaās blockade is preventing ukraine from exporting? itās a fuck ton, and there will be a lot of food shortages if the blockade isnāt lifted. it needs to be dealt with, whether thatās done by giving ukraine anti ship missiles or directly forcing them to leave

There is a difference.
Iām gonna have to agree with Charlotte here, any sort of outright assault is not a good idea
no guys but really they're going to do it now i swear!!!
At the same time, I think naval operations are something that should be considered
Protecting shipping in international waters, should be considered
but an attempt to "break the bloackade" must not be done. Period.
As for the other warships, those should be left alone by other nations
treat it the way america treated the blockades in rhe iran-iraq war
America escorted neutral shipping to the edges of international waters, and protected them from attacks
while in international seas
That would already be a huge step forward
But thats the limit
Itās worth a try I think
You must under no circumstances assault the Russian fleet in non-international waters
And the important thing here is communication
^^^
It should be clearly stated how many ships will be operating, what the protected routes will be and what is considered aggressive action
mhmn
yeah that i can agree with
just doesn't mean an attempt will cause a whole ass war as someone here claims
I standby exactly what I say.
my opinion on this is the same as its been since February 24th
same as it was with the no fly zones
direct confrontation between NATO and Russia mist be avoided at all costs
Russian threats relating to non-confrontation actions are to be disregarded
I've tried to keep as ideologically consistent as I can, while admitting where I've been incorrect
Iāll have to find it again but I saw a very reasonable plan from a Finnish naval specialist a few weeks ago
But one of the main obstacles will be finding enough countries to support this operation, as well as convincing Turkey to let warships into the Black Sea again

iāve been thinking a similar way, but i personally think that confrontation with russia should be avoided at all costs unless the devastation from inaction would be roughly the same or greater than the devastation from confrontation
thatās why i supported a no fly zone, i was expecting the bombing campaign to reach operation rolling thunder levels of destruction
I see the devastation of the confrontation as similar to the devastation in Japan 1945, across the entire European continent, far greater then any possible devastation from inaction
luckily it didnāt turn out that way
thatās basically what i was expecting the bombing campaign to become back in early march. the combination of ramped up bombing efforts, uncertainty about ukraineās air defenses and air force, reports of backfires and bears at airbases within range of ukraine, and the more rapid russian advance had me thinking that
I'd rather Ukraine be destroyed, then an entire continent be destroyed, if we're gonna summarise it to this.
gee thanks
maybe don't then?
The ideal is, nothing gets destroyed. And we must strive to attain that.
I was replying to a comment made to me, and that was the scenario it was put into.
And I have supported what I believe to be the best way
To approach as little long term destruction as possible
Send Ukraine weapons, send Ukraine planes, do not get NATO directly involved in fighting. Sending everything short of our men.
And work towards long term diplomatic results, that minimise death and destruction in the long term, everywhere.
The Long Term clause is I why I disagree with some, who say ukraine should surrender to minimise bloodshed
While, yes, it would minimise destruction and death on this day. It would not in the long term

ukraine doesnāt need to fight for every inch of land as long as russia continues to lose equipment at an unsustainable rate
remember that german forces at one point were able to see the kremlinās towers during operation barbarossa, but they still got crushed later on
and keep in mind that russia is giving their all for these tiny advances
Sure, but having their line broken through and losing a town
isn't ideal
speaking of equipment losses, i think it may be prudent to start training ukrainian forces on systems like m60 and abrams sooner rather than later. russia may be allegedly running low on working tanks, but eventually ukraine will be in the same position i think
I mean, assuming the west wants to send those over
as tech gets more expensive and militarily significant to the west, the interest declines
which might be why they havent started
i meant it more as like a better safe than sorry thing
hopefully we donāt need to send reserve abrams and m60s, but if we do have to it would be great for the ukrainians to already know how to use them

is why it might not happen

Discord rolled out a new fix
It doesn't fix on any tweets that someone has posted on discord between the break and the fix, as it loads the old cache for them
but yeah it should be fine on newer tweets
Iām seeing some scattered reports that the Russians are trying to get DPR militia forces to fight with LPR and Russian forces around Izyum and Severodonetsk. The DPR forces are trying to refuse, as they are mounting an offensive to take territory in Donetsk Oblast.

ā”ļøISW: 'Russian forces have likely abandoned efforts to encircle large Ukrainian formations in eastern Ukraine.'
Russian troops āare instead attempting to secure smaller encirclements and focus on Sievierodonetsk,ā the Institute for the Study of War said in its May 24 update.

This change in strategy is allowing for gradual advances, but at the expense of abandoning several intended lines of advance and deep encirclement of Ukrainian forces in eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces are also likely conducting a controlled withdrawal southwest of Popasna near Bakhmut to protect Ukrainian supply lines against Russian offensives in the southeast of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, the ISW wrote.

Russia has now lost more tanks (734) that the combined quantity of tanks currently in service with the British (227), German (266), and French (222) armies combined (715).

lmao right?
It's a gun, and it shoots
And it can shoot for quite a long time
yeah but like
so is this
but which would you rather have, that, or an m16
I think that in the choice between "no machine gun" and "old machine gun", the old machine gun wins out
yeah, of course
but a maxim is still.... massively outclassed by anything modern
its better then nothing
you're missing the point
ah
It fires the same round as the PKM (which is the GPMG currently in service in the Russian army), at a rate-of-fire only slightly slower
Again, don't get me wrong, its far better then nothing, but it certainly isn't anyones first choice :p
Its effective rate of fire is actually higher than the PKM, because it takes longer to overheat
machine guns do have a pretty long service life
The only place it really falls down is weight, because it's heavier than a Browning M2
but that doesn't matter if you're using it in an emplacement or on a truck
plus a maxim isn't nearly as one man operable as other MGs
but again, a truck helps solve that
i feel like machine guns are one of those things where thereās been a technology plateau and stuff from 100 years ago can be almost as effective as modern stuff
just look at the m2 browning, itās been in service for over 100 years
I'd say the m2 is about the cutoff
I wouldn't wanna use anything older, but the M2 is still perfectly fine
well, its more important on foot, then mounted
something as small as a few kg lighter, or better handling, is very important on foot
but not that important in a truck
thereās also been photos of ukrainian soldiers using old mg3s/mg42s, i bet the russians still know and fear the sound of the old buzzsaw
pretty sure the german army still uses the buzzsaw
yeah thatās kinda my point, āobsoleteā machine guns still get the job done today
well, depends on the job
a maxim may get the job done on a truck, but theres no way in hell you're carrying that on foot without a team
we should give ukraine some Tachanka's
sadly, tachanka is russian and heād never fight for ukraine : (
siege joke btw
absolute meme tier vehicle and delightfully effective

ā”ļøIran to supply Russia with car parts and gas turbines in exchange for steel.
Iranian Industry, Mining, and Trade Minister Reza Fatemi Amin said on May 26 that Iran would use barter trade with Russia to ensure supplies of raw materials for its metals and mining sector.
He also said that Iran would need to import zinc, lead and alumina from Russia. Russia has had difficulties with equipment and components for its industry because Western imports have dropped as a result of the sanctions imposed due to its aggression against Ukraine.
fairly unsurprising
