I've been a bit out of the loop these past few weeks
What's the current Ukraine Situation lookin' like?
North liberated, upcoming heavy battles for the east

Dear god...
I just scrolled up to see several articles about children dying from LANDMINES?!
those are articles from Donbas war era
dating 2015-2016
around that 8 year period before this invasion
Okay
you might want to scroll futher up to see today's russian hit on Kramatorsk's railroad station
and the Bucha massacre
this
Fucked up
Literally a terrorist attack. Purposely attacking civilians out of propagandic 'revenge'
Very
And this. A lot of people burned, executed, tortured, put in to mass graves, etc. CW gore, death, a lot of fucked up shit ||https://twitter.com/search?q=bucha massacre&src=typeahead_click|| Just scroll down this twitter page to see some very gruesome pictures
There's also evidence of them knowingly doing it, as can be seen in this message from one of the russian propaganda telegram channels, urging anyone to not evacuate through the railroad station in Kramatorsk way before the hit
The fact that they wrote this on the missile should be a pretty good indicator as well
it's just fucked up on so many levels
It doesn't help anyone
2 children died from this very same rocket too
It's completely morally wrong and there's no arguement that there was any benefit from anyone. It was pointless violence.
man
There was never an intention from them to help
Denazification, demilitarisation - absolute bullshit on paper that just means complete genocide and maraudering
Russia's idea of "liberation" seems to include mass execution of everyone opposed to them
all the war crimes done by them were not accidental, they're not here to have a proper war
They just want to fucking erase us, once again
Time and time again history fucking repeats itself
Repressions, famines, genocides
Just to dictate their "great and powerful" russian narrative
Fuck that
That's why we're fighting like there's no tomorrow, why we're urging west for sanctions and weapons
Our entire existence is at stake
That's been the case for over a century now
When tyranny loses the war against Ukraine, it will be one of the greatest contributions to Europe's security in decades. Consequently, one of the greatest contributions to the security of Finland. That is why we need the weapons that Finland's partners in the European Union have. That is why we need truly effective sanctions against Russia. A s...
We're already at the false claims stages. Russia is now claiming it was a false flag attack and that they do not employ Tochka-U missiles.
Despite that being blatantly false.
Plus there are a number of videos clearly showing them But there are multiple videos showing exactly that https://twitter.com/newsburko/status/1512391257997385736?s=20&t=NC4kGRPHtVnXr40c0FW6Kg
Today Russia hit #Kramatorsk with Tochka-U. And the @mod_russia claims that allegedly #Russia "does not have" Tochka-U in service. But the facts say otherwise.
In this video, #Russian OTRK Tochka-U with the letter "V" was recorded on railway platforms in Gomel, March 31, 2022.

for reference. The vehicles they're carried in
#Ukraine: An Azov fighter hitting a Russian BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle with a RPO-A Shmel rocket-assisted flamethrower at close range in #Mariupol. The BMP appears to be damaged and crew, as claimed, were killed.
This is an unusual weapon choice, however it works, as seen.

They're so fucking unbothered
they think they're dying for the right thing
and those people who get phonecalls from those same husbands/sons, they just don't believe them
zombie nation
russian embassy in dublin attempted to get more heating oil yesterday, failed
the company that they spoke to also denied them it due to the barbarity
Russians afraid of a little bit of cold
pathetic
Literally 1984
unironically
According to my grandparents, some former American general said on Russian TV that the Russian troops in Bucha were "only trading bread with the locals in exchange for canned food"
How vile do you have to be to even say something like that
Losing 1.3k men in a month is still significant considering in the 20 years the various nations were in afghanistan, we’ve only lost a recorded 3,502 soldiers
And that includes coalition forces, not just US
thats 175.1 a year
if the alleged rate according to the russians keep up it would be 15,600 a yaer
About right
that's the russian alleged too
the ukranian claim already has it at higher then that
in 45 or so days
Let them die for their country, no bastard ever won a war by doing so, they won by making the other bastard die for theirs
indeed
Well, the Ukraine forces are going off of destroyed vehicles which is not a bad thing, a single troop transport can carry 16 or so individuals, but instead it could also be carrying logistics, an apc that is taken out could be dismounted, but they count as if it is full
Either way, a single soldiers death only goes so far, taking out the assets really harms their invasion
Russian TV is going to air a special on "the liberation of Mariupol" now
They claim to have taken 252 marines as POWs
Of course there‘s a Russian correspondent in Mariupol!
"As you can tell they are surrendering" intense shelling in the background
ah yes, your usual "russian army retreating heroically while ukrainian nazis are cowardly attacking"
It‘s their usual tactic
- Deny it happened
- Nazis did it
- WHAT ABOUT IRAQ
Now they deny that they don’t have Tochka U missiles… hmmmm
hmmmm
OH
Lmaooooo
You know what their explanation is?
"Yes, Tochka U missiles were used during the February 2022 drills…. BUT THOSE BELONG TO THE BELARUSIANS"
My my
the bus 🚍
🗿
also the whataboutism for iraq falls apart the second you stop to consider
you can still want people to be prosecuted for iraq WHILE wanting prosecutions for this illegal war
Yup, but they don’t care
ofc
I wonder how they managed to record these interviews
I doubt Russian state media is welcome in Ukraine right now
Usually they only appear in combat areas
Pfffff
Okay
It seems like the "interviews" were actually recorded in Donetsk
New Russian theory! The missile just didn’t reach its intended target, mhmmm yes
how does anyone believe that shite
"the missles didn't exist, but if they did they were belarusian, but if they weren't belarusian then they didnt hit the target, but we dont use those but we do but not"
I talked to my grandparents today and they believe it ._.
"No-one with that many reasons could be lying!"
jesus i'm so sorry
It’s okay
mass exodus of russian youth out of russia
mainly to istanbul, as theres no flight restrictions, and 90 day visa free
As a result, you can now hear Russian on the streets and on lines that form in front of ATMs — with Russian credit cards disabled, Russian refugees are living on any cash they can withdraw from ATMs. Inside coffee shops, you can overhear Russians exchanging tips on cheap places to stay, how to open a bank account or the best places to exchange currency.
Under Turkish law, they can only stay for 90 days. What will happen to them next is a topic in the cafes, bars and hostel lobbies where they also gather to discuss the political developments in their homeland. Most still have friends and families who are left in Russia.```
quite a long article, written by a journalist who also fled to turkey at the start of this war
NEW: Elon Musk’s SpaceX drew praise from Ukraine for sending Starlink Internet terminals amid the war, cast by the company in part as a charitable gesture
But the U.S. is paying millions for some of the terminals & much of the transportation, docs show 🧵https://t.co/1lEWopLnPy

And Musk takes all the credit, great
👀
of course he does, same with everything spacex does, and now everything epic that happens, he's the main person mentioned
Well, he was in Berlin recently and was denied entry to the most famous nightclub here lmao
LOL
The Russian Foreign Ministry transfers its "denazification" rhetoric on Ukraine to Latvia:
"The ruling regime in Latvia has long been well known for its neo-Nazi preferences and attempts to whitewash the atrocities of Nazi Germany 's henchmen"

Nu jā, es neesmu pārsteigts (Well, I‘m not surprised)

the correct response to russian threats here is
"you and what army"
I mean, if they ever decide to attack the Baltics it would likely involve a full mobilisation and declaration of martial law
yeye
I was making a joke like, russia doesn't really have any excess troops to even make threats with
Yup
yyyyeah i just saw a pic of a 3yo kid with ||his head blown off||
pic taken after the bombing in kramatorsk
enough for today
Oh jeez
Oof that's definitely completely undeniably a war crime

they "liberated" the city btw
Mēs te noteikti visi esam neo nacisti, neciešu tos krievus.
😔
Viņi ir pati nacisti
Vienīgajā vietā latvijā kur varētu būt neo nacisti ir latgales austrumos, pie krievu robežas
Tur ir trakā propaganda
Yeah, Latgale is… special in many ways
Fr
They just completely blow it out of proportion
Especially considering they have people like that in their country too
Yeah
Also that Legionnaires‘s Day in March, it‘s not even an official holiday anymore and it hasn’t been for like 20 years
And yet they still act like everyone supports it
Same with Estonia, everyone there is a Nazi to them now too
😔
And today they accused Lithuania of trying to close the land corridor to Kaliningrad
It is
Especially since I‘m more worried about them closing that corridor to Lithuania
everyone is the enemy but us
everyone has faults but us
we are a perfect wittle countwy uwu
- Russia 2022
russia for at least a decade now
I mean, their entire narrative is based on them being anti-fascist
Well yeah actually
opposite day is not just a day, it's an entire existence
everything said is always the reverse
They‘ve had issues with the Baltics for a very long time
mad cuz we broke out of the union first
Since they’re supposedly "ungrateful"
very ungrateful for the 50 years of slavery 🥺
But we just wanted to build a metro in Riga 🥺
god, if russia wrote some bullshit pact with us like they did with Ukraine back in the 90s of "pls no nato, gib nukes n we protecc", we'd def be invaded as well if uncle sam wasn't protecting us with his 2nd longest largest nuke stockpile
This comedy sketch also shows how Russians expect people to think about the deportations of the 40s: https://youtu.be/IWLKiLXBGhg

"historical truth"
Yeah
People werent crying and starving on the train to siberia
And werent separated from their familes forever
Yeah, and sometimes they didn’t even know what they were doing
ever wonder why crimean is ethnically russian
Hold on, I have to look up something
and why the crimean tartars are <15% of the population
ill give you a hint, the cause starts with S and ends with Alin
Tbf they started deporting parts of the population during Catherine‘s reign already
There was a pretty big article on Russian imperialism in regard to Ukraine in History Today
hence
Yeah
"to be fair on the Soviets, they only continued the genocides that the Empire started"
(by which I mean I don't think "Tbf" was a fitting opener)
Fuck you stalin!
Which were basically people with huge farms
And when the Soviet Union annexed Latvia the first task they assigned to their officers was to find the Kulak in each village and deport them
The only issue was that at the time Latvia had already enacted major land reforms so they weren’t even people with huge farms you could call Kulaks
At least thats nice
So they either randomly chose farmers to blame for everything or people ended up telling on their neighbours and those got deported
Salin
They were literally like "Oh, we don’t like this guy, let‘s tell the Soviets that he‘s a Kulak"
⚡️ BBC: Russia changes its military command.
According to an unnamed Western official, Gen. Alexander Dvornikov, who has experience in Syria, will lead the army amid Kremlin's desire to reach “some kind of success” before May 9, when the country celebrates the victory in WWII.

Probably my favourite book on the history of the Baltic states, sadly it hasn’t been translated yet and I don’t know of any good English books either
Just grow smh
Putins 170cm
the biggest problem with russia’s military is that putin filled its leadership with yes-men instead of guys who knew what they were doing. chances are this won’t help much
which is 5'7
Yup hes 170
jeez putin is a short ass boi
Hopefully, they're still gonna throw everything at donbas
Yeah, the Donbas offensive scares me
Hey I'm 170cm too 😤
SMOL
Hopefully they fuck up massively
And hopefully fail
yikes lmao
looks down
manlet alert
Probably, I bet the tanks are gonna get stuck again
Die
Can’t wait to see the MANPADs make a fucking joke out of the airforce
Gib heavy weapons nato
slovakia or some other central european nation recently donated all their s-300s
not bad
Nice
NATO is in a quantum superposition of doing something and being fucking useless
Germany still refuses to sell tanks to Ukraine because "they require training"
As is a lot of nations saying they’re helping while actually sending the bare minimum
Like I‘m pretty sure Ukrainians can learn, they‘re not eternally trapped in the 80s
There’s literally 100 tanks standing around ready to be dismantled
yeah probably atgm’s, tanks are the backbone of russia’s army
Yeah
They need tanks themselves too though
Seems like tank combat in a cityscape scenario isn’t exactly great though
that could be huge too
Yeah
it allows biden to send arms without asking either congress/senate approval
Oh shit
It was last activated in 1941, to assist the UK
though i’d imagine biden doesn’t want our more advanced tech potentially falling into russian hands
When does Ukraine get the F-22s
Anti air to fuck up any more missiles and planes
sadly never because the usaf is the only operator
exports are banned
I’m guessing UAVs are incredibly useful too
different folks say different things, but the general consensus is anti-tank / anti-air, but theres also a significant need for small arms
They can do reconnaissance or attack things like artillery positions
A lot of ukranian resistance is being made up for volunteers
with minimal training
giving them anything more advanced then an AK... isn't effective
Sadge 😔
give them some old predator drones if the usaf still has any in their inventory
Yeah, but then there’s also the actual army
guns are pretty easy to learn tbh
Russia is like slowly losing and getting pushed back
point, shoot, reload, sometimes clean
How have they not completely lost yet
numbers mostly
Because they still have reserves
they got conscripts and tanks for days
While there has been lots of attention on large weapons systems, Ukraine sees the small-arms ammunition they are receiving as a “lifeblood,” senior U.S. defense official says.
400
(Dan Lamothe is Washington post reporter)
Lets see the Ukrainian defence slowly dwindle those numbers into non existence
Yeahhhh
Not to mention all the missile strikes
Yeahhh
urban cities, especially, they are gonna be horrific to retake
And it‘s very likely that similar atrocities as in Bucha have taken place across the occupied areas
Specifically Mariupol
God fucking hell…
Kherson, Mariupol, will be bloodbaths to retake
Though knowing the Russians they‘ll try to get rid of the bodies
Feels like UAVs would be incredibly helpful in this war
Kherson negotiated a surrender when russia entered, but sadly, I doubt the russians will show the save mercy to the city
they are
To attack artillery/missile positions
hence the USA and turkey and flooding them into ukraine
also vehicle columns
UAVs can very easily drop a bomb on lead vehicles
and block up the entire column
God I’m so fucking sick of hearing about atrocities and war crimes every other hour
i think i heard the us is planning to arm the tb2 with more advanced missiles, likely hellfires
The Donbas offensive will likely require a lot more heavy equipment though
yeah...
its fucking horrible
war, war is hell.
I find the denials even worse sometimes
Like Bucha was already fucking repulsive and vile of the Russian “”liberators””
And to imagine there’s gonna be more of that
The lengths people go to is incredible
If theres one thing I hope this has taught people, it's how fucking horrible war is, and how it must be avoided in the strongest possible way, at all times.
^^
Yeahhh
yeah this is probably one the most well-documented major conflicts in history, much of the world has learned how horrible war really is
there’s nothing glorious or romantic about it
And to think it’s not just Ukraine
mhmm
I’m sure there’s several wars, some spanning decades now, still going on
War's just as bloody, or more bloody, continue to rage across the globe
God fucking damn it
Hey, in positive news
A couple weeks ago
a mass ceasefire was signed in the tigray war
in ethiopia
which is very positive news, and will save tens of, if not hundreds of thousands of lives - as a famine is extremely close, and this might just stop it getting bad
assuming it holds
I meant to search CIWS but I ended up searching COWS and I feel slightly calmer now, having looked at cute pictures of cows
c:
Aww
Another issue are the mines in the Black Sea and what to do with them
Since those are currently preventing grain exports
Also uhhh
Why doesn’t the US export things like CIWS?
To defend against the missile attacks on the city
Isn’t CIWS mainly used on ships
Or is it not really possible to defend against those missiles
Ah yeah true
CIWS is naval
You can, but those are different systems
They got a Soviet-era system from Czechia recently
Are there alternatives?
The US mainly uses the Patriot system
But Ukraine is a huge country so it would require quite a large number of them
Hopefully they actually work, wasn’t there the whole fiasco of some country sending old non functioning equipment
That was Germany
Germany, of all countries
And I‘m sure they work because it was in active use, whereas Germany sent random stuff they found in some warehouse (I‘m not kidding)
Hugely cringe
God
Or "anything that requires training"
Like
I‘m pretty sure you can teach them like the British are doing with their missiles
I’m sure the USA’s “small” military budget would “struggle”
Mhmmm, totally
You have to keep in mind that Estonia sent more humanitarian and military support than Germany
Fucking hell
In spite of being about 1/60th the size of Germany
Congrats Germany
Scholz is just blocking everything
You’re like the central damn country in Europe and you fail to send functioning equipment
Round of applause to Scholz
I read an article detailing his approach today
And basically what he does is pretend that nothing ever happens randomly or is unpredictable
And since he knows everything that‘s going to happen he does everything right, that‘s his logic
I‘ve heard professional soldiers say that training the Ukrainian army in Poland or wherever is possible, but no, clearly we have to keep sending them the worst of what we have
ciws is basically a worse sam system, it’s short range and fairly inaccurate
Oh
on naval ships it’s a last resort
russia’s ciws is actually a lot better than america’s, it has 2 30mm gatling cannons that both fire faster, and it’s also got missiles
america’s is 20mm
whats the cost for both of them
no clue
it's not like our soldiers understand shit slowly either
but oh well
sure sure, just stay resilient while another couple of thousand innocent lives falls to crazed ideas of a balding lunatic

Also remember my rant about tanks yesterday? Scholz never fails to surprise me with his inaction
⚡️UK, Germany won't send tanks to Ukraine.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a joint conference with German counterpart Olaf Scholz on April 8 that it “wouldn’t be appropriate” for Western allies to meet all of Ukraine’s weaponry demands.

And minister of defense Lambrecht says that Germany doesn’t have anything to send anymore and that she can’t talk about what they‘re sending anyways
All of this is such bullshit, how much worse do things have to go before they get what they ask for
When their throne built upon capitalism, excuses, and lies starts being endangered

⚡️ Chornobyl nuclear plant staff say Russian troops interrogated them, used force.
The employees have also said they had been trying hard to find fuel to prevent a radiation leak and even had to steal fuel from the Russians, BBC's Russian service reported on April 9.

Instead, the U.K. will send £100 million of defensive military equipment to Ukraine, including more Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles, and another 800 anti-tank missiles.

Yeah, definitely
Though it‘s still sad that the biggest country in the EU is doing so little
I mean, a lot of economists say that an embargo would be possible
But even if it isn’t possible right away, the German government should at least announce a clear date when they are going to stop buying Russian gas
Because honestly, to me it seems like a lot of people here want this war to be over as quickly as possible so they can go back to doing business with Russia
Not because they particularly care about Ukraine
But doing so would mean another invasion in 2-3 years
Indeed
But I have a feeling that even if, say, Estonia gets invaded a lot of politicians would be like "Oh, you know, Estonia is so far away and there’s Russians living there… let‘s not provoke them"
Yea
I honestly don't understand how can they be so laid back when Russia is deadass framing everyone as their enemy
That’s a difficult question to answer, but I think something that plays a big role in this is just the way students are taught about other European countries
We only ever really talked about France, and France is also the country that usually comes up in history classes and whatnot
You can’t reasonably expect history classes to deal with every country‘s history but I really would have appreciated a bit more on the rest of Europe
For example there’s a different focus whenever WW2 is taught (which is usually the western side of the war), whereas Eastern Europe is much less commonly mentioned
And even so, while we did talk about the war of annihilation and the Holocaust in the east, as well as the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, pretty important details like the annexation of the Baltics or the deportations there were not even briefly mentioned
⚡️ S&P cuts Russia's foreign currency rating to 'selective default,' saying Russia was unlikely to honor its obligations to foreign bondholders.

russian parliamentary channel- Duma TV- has been banned om youtube
the russian govt. is now threatening to ban the site despite it's incredible popularity

naw all russian tv has been banned in lithuania
Welp guess he just has to watch Alex Jones like the rest of us
Do not pick up cobalt 60 with your bare hands.

but still my god do not touch highly radioactive materials with your bare hands
god...

wow wouldnt've guessed not to pick up fucking radioactive material i really do like staying alive yes
Worst thing is, it's a beta emitter... and he almost certainly got some on his hands, and then likely face

⚡️ About 10% of population fled Ukraine, yet numbers decline.
According to the UN, 4.44 million Ukrainians fled the country after Russia began its full-scale invasion.
The number of new refugees in April decreased — about 414,000 people have left the country since April 1.

waiting for one russian to find an alpha emitter and lick it as a dare
wouldn't even be that surprised
i think he might disintegrate soon
always remember astrology girl advice: do not pick up rocks with evil auras without protection

Oh no
I'd watch that
As much as i hate the russian forces, i dont want death
The only people that i wish would perish are the kremlin
And some other
Others*
ah yes because it's the kremlin personally that rapes women and kills children
Well yeah thats absolutely not ok
Then what the fuck are you on about
in my personal opinion, every russian who isn’t deserting, sabotaging, or surrendering absolutely deserves what happens to them
that ^^^
I hope the russian invasion is stopped in full, and as fast as possible. I do not wish for russian soldiers to die, however it is a.... horrible necessity in warfare, to defeat the invasion you must fight back, and that includes killing enemies in battles. Those russian soldiers who have committed atrocities, I hope they are caught and face the full force of the human rights law.
like i feel no sympathy for the heli pilots that burn alive in those crashes
Yes
I do not wish any russian soldier to die, but accept that it is what happens in war.
And that the death of young russians, is a necessary shedding of human blood, to stop the invasion
It's like, if someone charges at you with a knife, and you fight and in the process of self defence, you kill them
I 100% couldve worded that better
It is unfortunate they lose their life, however, it was a necessary sacrifice for you to defend yourself
yeah especially if you consider that very same person had also killed people before you and committed several war crimes like killing civilians, striking hospitals, schools, homes, maraudering, looting
the list goes on
War is horrific, and the loss of life is always horrific.
And the path to ending the war, is to defeat the invasion
Not wishing death is cool and all but there is a difference between a death of an occupant soldier and a peaceful civilian. At this point one russian soldier dead is a few civilian lifes spared, so I really don't like the take of "I don't want any deaths", just sounds very whataboutistic and passive
Everyone wants to live in their perfect world of peace and prosper, but as we all said, there is no war without death
They're soldiers, they're meant to die, harsh truth really
They are like pawns
Yeah
And while they are people, they're still committing crimes against other people
Heavy fucking crimes
Mhm
and after all that just hearing someone say "oh i don't want any deaths"
very delusional and neutral
There’s like the saying of ‘not even wishing that on your worst enemy’ (something like that) but when your ‘worst enemy’ is doing the.. things.. Russia does then I don’t think it’s very applicable

Sneaky Bojo
Do we know what specifically they are discussing or just that he went

Probably should have assumed that
This is almost certainly a political move by bojo
theres a massive scandal brewing in the UK so he needs to distract the papers
hopefully more support for ukraine comes along with it
Hopefully indeed
That’s just pointless tbh
All it does is make life harder for journalistic as I doubt many people watch that channel regularly anyways
yeah will be a bit harder for western journos to see wtf these assholes are talking about
Also I found this "draft for a peace proposal" online and oh my
It’s awful
[Marc Weller if Professor of International Law and International Constitutional Studies in the University of Cambridge, the former Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and of the European Centre for Minority Issues, a former United Nations Senior Mediation Expert and a Barrister (Middle Temple) at Doughty Street Chambers. He ...
All it does is give major concessions to Russia
to be fair at the start, he does state this is just as example of what he believes is the best middle ground between the two sides that, rather then a suggestion
Plus this was from 16th March, when the military situation on the ground did look worse for ukraine
he notes here that issue
Just a few highlights:
- Ukraine pledges not to join EU for at least ten years
- Ukraine is barred from keeping its forces closer than 20 miles to the administrative borders of Donetsk and Luhansk oblast
- Russia gets to station 3500 troops in the LNR and DNR
- LNR and DNR receive a permanent special status through a new constitution
Marc's been an adviser at international peace negotiations before, so he does know what he's talking about
He certainly knows a lot about international law, but I find this proposal just so far-fetched
I mean
I think that's a fairly realistic analysis of what the situation was on the 16th March
This would basically establish Russian control over the east of Ukraine while weakening Ukraine‘s defence posture
yes
Honestly
The people who wrote proposals like this clearly have not been listening to Putin‘s speeches
This isn't a suggestion
that's important to know
he's simply giving his take on what would be the fastest route to peace, not what he suggests or recommends
I know
His entire argument is based on this though: The text is mindful of the fact that Russia launched its initial threat of force against Ukraine in order to extract concessions from NATO, rather than Kyiv
Yet Russia‘s framing is wholly focused on the denial of Ukrainian statehood
And I think that was already clear in March
I... agree with him?
Russia's trying to hurt NATO primarily
How so?
and the easiest way to do that... is to embarrass NATO by an expedient conquest of a nation they were friendly with, and enticing to join
"Oh nato, you were in the process of inviting ukraine? too bad we conquered them in 3 days and now this is a stronk russian nation"
how does that make nato look
I don’t think that quite explains their actions though, considering they could have picked an easier target
Moldova would be harder
Theres an isolated russian brigade in the mountains, without sea access
that would be fighting a mountainous guerrilla war without supply routes
the soviets tried this in afghanistan
Ukraine has a very high symbolic value to Russia
I don't doubt that was a very high cause to
And ultimately, all negotiations with NATO members in January and February failed
It‘s the primary cause
I think anti-NATO was the primary goal, but they chose ukraine as the symbolic value made it an even juicer target
Demonstrating strength to NATO countries may be a motive, but it‘s far from the primary one
No, that wouldn’t be in line with their messaging
Nations... don't broadcast their real goals on national TV?
Why are you taking russia's goals at face value here
Just because the kremlin says it doesn't make it true to their intentions
I‘m not taking them at face value, I‘m telling you what many Russians believe
Because yes, this war is popular among certain demographics
I don't get your point here man
I think the war is primarily anti-nato, and that anti-ukraine and the symbolism and history was a juicy extra, so they abused that symbolism in their public messaging
to convince people this is about helping russians in ukraine and denazification
The point is that in my opinion this war is first and foremost about slowly subjugating Ukraine, with NATO being a side effect and not a primary motivation
Maybe
But Ukraine has already said that they won’t join NATO if it‘s part of a peace agreement, and yet the war still continues
The war continues now because russia cant back out
Putin needs a win for popular support
even if only a symbolic win
Putin needs some tangible victory over ukraine
Exactly
And it might continue for a very long time
Though there are rumours that it‘s supposed to be "done" by May
their goal is to win by the 9th may
Yep
(due to time zones the signing of the surrender was the night of the 8th in london and paris, 9th in moscow)
If they don’t gain any ground, there is a chance that they might back off
Or they might grow even more desperate
they'll be desperate
a may 9th parade is like holy to them
one hell of a day to showoff their "might"
whatever the outcome will be, they'll still declare victory
Yeah, the parade is huge
Or it‘ll be time for another Great Patriotic War Special Military Operation
yeah
honestly no idea what shit they'll pull out of their ass then, better to focus on now

This reminds me of a sketch from a British comedy
Field Marshal Haig has formulated a brilliant new tactical plan to ensure final victory in the field.
Blackadder:
Ah. Would this brilliant plan involve us climbing out of our trenches and walking very slowly towards the enemy?
Captain Darling:
How could you possibly know that, Blackadder? It's classified information!
Blackadder:
It's the same plan that we used last time and the seventeen times before that.
Melchett:
Exactly! And that is what is so brilliant about it! It will catch the watchful Hun totally off guard! Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time!
There is, however, one small problem.
Blackadder:
That everyone always gets slaughtered in the first ten seconds.
Melchett:
That's right. And Field Marshal Haig is worried this may be depressing the men a tad.

I can only speak for the part of the yugoslav wars that played out in Croatia, but holding NATO bombings as a bad thing is hypocritical because an excellent example of Serbia doing something worse is Vukovar. They almost completely leveled the city, targeted hospitals and at the end of the siege took people from the hospital to an actual concentration camp and executed them. Everyone did atrocities in those wars, but Serbia by far did the most.

Wow Russians actually doing damage
they've been doing damage since day 1, but for propaganda and morale purposes, Ukraine rarely reports it's military losses
Ukraine can win if the west continues providing heavy and light equipment, as they have the morale over Russian troops
it's pretty easy to see your losses once you actually find a good russian news channel, which doesn't just pull even more propaganda
but one thing I know for sure is that our losses are way less than russian's
considering how we're standing against world's second army, we're doing pretty damn well
Assuming this page is unbiased, which it does look like to me, it seems losses are about 1:3.7 hardware wise https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2022/02/attack-on-europe-documenting-equipment.html
Or 736:2746 total documented
so Ukraine is doing better than average
good
I know 1:3 is the average from defender vs attacker
so it having almost 1:4 is quite a good thing
should remember that since Ukraine's military is way smaller, the 736 equipment lost is still pretty significant
as long as nato keeps supplying more equipment, we gud

In the 1980s Daly was a member of the Labour Party as a teenager but was expelled...
In late January 2022, Daly described the Russian troop build up on the Ukrainian border as being "clearly defensive" and believed there is "no evidence that Russia has any desire to invade Ukraine, it would be of no benefit to them".[45] In February 2022, shortly before the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Daly (alongside Mick Wallace) was one of 52 MEPs who voted against providing €1.2 billion in loans to Ukraine, against 598 MEPs in favour.[46] On 2 March 2022, she was one of 13 MEPs who voted against a resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[47] Daly later stated that she opposed Russian aggression against Ukraine and had voted against the resolution because it also stated its support for NATO and had called for weapons to be sent to Ukraine.[48]

so the biggest news today is that there's a chance chemical weapons could have been used? (not confirmed tho)
we know
not the first time they used chemical weapons in the last 10 years, they already made people know they're gonna use chemical weapons, and will def blame Azov
Watch them say that they were given permission to use chemical weapons
“Mmm yes Ukraine said we could, it’s fine”
nah they are gonna call another UNSC meeting and say that Ukraine used chemical weapons
since they always seem to call a meeting about something they did and say Ukraine did it
then everyone rolls their eyes and moves on
nice job microsoft
this is how north korea describes eu sanctions
“We are alive because someone helped us, and thanks to that I can help other people.”

Leopard 1's are from 1965
A few armies, most notably greece and Turkey, still use large numbers of heavily modernised onea
nice drawing
Okay so its a real article... my friend who sent it me evidently found/added the image below :p
Papperger said Ukrainian soldiers could be trained on the Leopard 1 within a few days if they are already skilled military personnel.
They'll provably be more useful fighting infantry/light vehicles then against other tanks
given their age
but they're still absolutely a very welcome and useful asset
I heard chemical weapons has been used
unconfirmed claims by azov of their use in mariupol
have we heard any indications either way if it happened or not?
^
ah thank you
I guess we will see tomorrow
It's gonna be really interesting if that actually happened though
in the politics I meant
not irl because that's just horrible for everyone in there
Italy has seized properties worth €105 million formerly owned by Nikita Mazepin and his father, according to police sources.

Nikita Mazepin was an F1 driver last season, lost his job in March as a result of a chain of events following the invasion
has dad was one of the major oligarchs who took part in meetings with putin in the first week of the invasion
both nikita and father have refused to come out against the war
fuck him
Hes gone on claiming his firing was unfair
funny thing is, he wasn't even fired for being russian
he was only signed to Hass F1 team, as they were struggling for money, and his dad offered a massive sponsorship with a massive Russian oil company in return for his son getting a seat
his son was a god awful driver and came 21st, in a season with 20 drivers
And so when the invasion started, all russian company sponsorships were ended
and they went
"oh we don't need this oligarchs bastard son anymore"
and fired him
and he's been complaining for months and refusing to denounce the war
the usual spoiled rich kids
