man
hey i see that zelensky is saying what i have been saying this holl time fucking take away veto rights on the UN counsel
the UN humans rights council is like
filled with countreies you dont want on a human rights council
Which normally I haven’t been in favor of removing members…but I’m fully in favor with this
let's goo lithuania is there
It even has the US the champion of human rights
also wtf russia and ukraine in the same thing
Venezuela, Russia, China, Uzbeksitan, Qatar, UAE
thats just the ones elected in 2021 from eastern europe
Man that would be awkward if that was the current setup
Countries do 3 year terms
it is
these are the current 47 members
Russia and Ukraine are together as they are both Eastern European States that do a term 2021 - 2023
UK trying to flex with that long name
The current President is Argentinian
How long is the president term again?
12months

btw, the uk/usa/russia here DONT have permenant seats
And France
they, too, have normal 3 year terms
And I’m guessing it has to be full members so no Vatican City or Palestine
ye
The General Assembly can suspend the rights and privileges of any Council member that it decides has persistently committed gross and systematic violations of human rights during its term of membership.[15] The suspension process requires a two-thirds majority vote by the General Assembly.
Okay so 47 current members
2/3 x 47 = 31.3333 = 32 members
lets take a look
I mean we got enough to over rule the condemnation in the UNGA
Remember Russia vetoed it in the SC and we had to overrule it in the GA
Well it say GA
Yeah that’s what I’m saying
I think so
Idk how abstains or no votes count
There’s the overrule for the condemnation
thats way more then 2/3 anyway
well, 20 over min
if you include absentions as nays
the General Assembly, by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting
sooo abstentions ignored
so 2/3rd is incredibly easy to get
Oh really?
Well present would mean they don’t count no votes
Does it say specifically abstained
Section 8 paragraph 3
Members of the United Nations; when electing members of the Council, Member
States shall take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and
protection of human rights and their voluntary pledges and commitments made
thereto; the General Assembly, by a two-thirds majority of the members present and
voting, may suspend the rights of membership in the Council of a member of the
Council that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights;```
and voting means non-abstainers
since abstaining is the process of declaring no-vote
if you see here
Burkina faso was not present
Burundi was present but not voting
I wonder why ones weren’t present
tbf its very common in both the UN and general politics
I assume they intended to abstain anyway
soooo makes not a great deal of difference
It’s just dumb :/ like you have a job go do it
The thing is I think there was a least one that was present for a vote but didn’t vote they didn’t even abstain
Like why
And then they spoke explaining why they didn’t vote
but just not confirming an abstention counts as the blank
it counts the same in practice as abstaining
I think
Not 100% certain here
Like bruh just hit the abstain button
It’s not rocket science
I wonder what happens if you hit the wrong button by accident
Can you change your vote before it ends
Like that would make my anxiety go crazy thinking this is the right one to push for this vote right
I wonder if that could account to some not voting
I still love the point out that Serbia voted to condemn Russia
They didn’t even abstain
I wonder if it could be related to Kosovo 🇽🇰 since Russia was supporting break away regions
The main issue with getting any vote done is hoping for a country to just have the balls to get it started
Slowly glances towards poland
Like they talk a big game and it’s like okay here’s one way to show you are serious being it to the GA to vote
That was one of the ones that voted against condemnation
Eritrea has a worse freedom of the press rating then NORTH KOREA
Ah explains why they voted against
Eritrea is North Korea but in Africa
Russias one of the only nations willing to work with Eritrea
and they have a military base there
Because I was like Russia duh, Belarus duh, North Korea yeah makes sense, Syria yeah makes sense, Eritrea…wait what
That makes sense now
Eritrea is bottom 5 in almost every single human rights ranking
Oof
frequently ranking alongside Afghanistan, Syria and North Korea
Wasn’t Eritrea at war 20 years ago?
Sounds like a great country to have on the Human Rights Council:)
I remember reading something about them being at war with Ethiopia
Yeah

Markus Lanz' talk show yesterday was awful
They had a journalist in Kyiv talk about what she saw during a tour in Bucha, and he was asking legitimate questions about their freedom of movement and whatnot, but things went downhill from there
Lanz outright asked her if she thinks that she‘s part of Ukrainian propaganda, then quickly apologised after she slammed him down and then suggested that the Ukrainians shouldn’t have invited 50 international journalists but instead only "2-3 independent journalists who wouldn’t have recorded such explicit footage and shown it to the public"

Russia has absolute air superiority in the region, which must be challenged by hundreds of Stinger and Strela deployments to the area asap.

2 frogfoots doesn’t sound like “absolute air superiority”
Thats just a video of 2
Ukraine has very little air coverage up in that area
they're still having limited success with MANPADS
they’re flying low, so it’s likely there’s still long range air defenses in the area. flying low significantly decreases the missiles’ range
they’re also dumping a ton of flares so they’re def scared of manpads too
And yeah, there's still air defences up
just no ukranian air
nor significant pressure to push the Russians out
damn that's scary

The Russian airforce is being completely memed on already, I wonder what would happen if Ukraine got fifth gen jets like the F-22
it would probably force them to start using the su-57. that would only result in them getting memed even harder tho because the felon is a cheap knockoff f-22 that is barely stealth capable and it would get dunked on by ukraine’s air defenses
i’ll give it this tho: felon is probably the coolest nato name for a plane

When the actual vote unfolds in the UNGA, I expect to see Global South countries to abstain, which will facilitate Russia's expulsion, or in some cases, break their silence
But its clear that the Bucha Massacre isn't causing a seismic shift in world opinion on Russia
133
Agreed
Honestly, this just casts doubt on the non-aligned movement
Here‘s some more footage https://youtu.be/kG4G66EBzFs
And it was just about the only way to transport a lot of equipment too
I imagine it's just wanting to not draw hostilities with russia
Apparently they finished maintenance on it 9 days before Russia invaded
And they had plenty of time to fly the aircraft out of Ukraine
Its devastating that they decided against this
Yeah, but I found an article in The Guardian about this and quite a few states explained their stance with not belonging to any bloc or saying that the war doesn’t concern them
i'm not surprised that those countries arent signing it
the entire point is to be non aligned
I mean, they're not wrong that its not their business, talking purely geopolitcally
i think its abhorrent that they do this
but the foreign policy of many countries is to be as neutral as possible
with no exceptions
Today, nations around the world are called again to take sides – between Russia and the west, and very soon between the west and China. But as the map of sanctions attests, the cross-pressure between these great powers may once again spark a movement for non-alignment, demanding a more universal application of international law against demands for unilateral exception
Agreed
Like you can decide to be completely neutral when it comes to trade or internal affairs of other countries, but all countries should follow and support international law
its horrible, but sadly the way our global political system is built
^
same situation with the uyghur genocide
yep
"“Neutrality does not mean indifference,” says Pierre Sané. “Neutrality means continuously calling for the respect of international laws; neutrality means that our hearts still go to the victims of military invasions and arbitrary sanctions never imposed on Nato countries"
The whole "calling for" part is just typical UN language that has no effect whatsoever
I think Russia‘s actions have more than shown that no diplomatic solution alone will convince them to back down
And even if they provide no aid themselves, they should at least use their vote in the GA for good
Neutrality doesn‘t mean that you don’t simply don’t care about international law
Neutrality shouldn't
But in the world we live in, nation states only care about human rights when it concerns then
And ultimately peace and the observance of human rights is only possible if governments possess and use their power against violators
Same
but sadly that is how it be
The thing is that there’s always going to be someone who will try to violate human rights or start a war
Which is why it’s important to have the capabilities to counteract that
Looking away like many countries right now is just awful
Indeed
For all the tines you hear human rights in ukraine mentioned, how many times do you hear the effect of the Cuban blockade
Cuba is very much a topic worth discussing in its own right
aye
As are the numerous other conflicts around the world
The thing I don’t understand is why people use that as an excuse to do nothing
What better time is there to start leading by example than now
Because pointing fingers at others is not going to help anyone
yeah!
But since many countries haven’t even made their position public yet we‘ll have to wait and see what the voting results will be like
I doubt it'll fail
probably just be similar to the vote we had a few weeks ago
where only 5 nations voted ❌
its 2/3rds of Yays+Nays
Abstainers aren't included in the total
Ah, that‘s good
there's just no chance it fails, especially after bucha
I wouldn’t bet on that
Theres a chance it fails, but a low one
main reason a nation would ❌ is precedent
if russia gets kicked out for their massacres
then they might get kicked out for their massacres
true
cuba cannot be compared to bucha in any sense
or anything else in ukraine
the cuba situation is really closer to the sanctions on russia than the bucha stuff. cuba's government isn't exactly a force for good
another thing to consider with the Global South, (I'm under the impression this refers to most of Africa, South America, South Asia and Oceania) looking at the countries, especially in Africa, there actually a common link between them all.
Countries who are in deep shit and rely on other countries for aid.
Most of Oceania signed it, bar like, the tiny island nations
NZ, Australia, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands did
but those are all very western-integrated nations sooo makes sense
but yeah your point holds with the rest
don't forget palau
missed that one :D
micronesia, marshall islands, and palau are all in a CFA with the us so its no surprise they signed it

@SamRamani2 It’s too late. Compassion fatigue. This should have been done within the first week.
yeah
the continent as a bloc (not sure about Liberia) all abstained on the UN vote condemning russia a few weeks ago
one look at libera's flag gives a clue as to their position
I understand why Africa is abstaining, it saddens me but cant do shit about it
So why are thay abstaining then
before I start my whole explaination, if you dont mind, in which country do you live? it helps to explain in context to others
Uk England
ok so the reason, as far as I can gather, for a large amount of abstainance from Africa is due to it's current economic and political climate. Many countries are desperate for any sort of help, regardless of where it comes from, and it's possible that if voting against Russia, they, and their allies, can withdraw support from Africa, which will absolutely cripple some economies and can lead to major instability, worse than it is already. Imagine going outside of London and seeing just miles miles overcrowded houses crudely put together with pieces of junk metal, where 20 people share one portable toilet, or going to the border and just seeing complexes of refugee shelters which barely or rarely meet the minimum requirements of basic living needs. Imagine going home, everyday, living in fear of gangs of human traffickers coming to your town and murdering, looting and kidnapping people, or having to flee thousands of kilometers by foot to escape brutal civil wars, that's sadly what a large part of Africa is going through. Hell, here in South Africa, the price of bread is expected to almost double in the next month and were seen as one of the more stable countries. Many countries are in deep trouble and cant afford to risk losing any support at all

it's the past 30 or so comments or so in this thread (whatever name you give it)
It's a significant diplomatic blow to Russia.
Not as many votes in favor compared to the condemnation but still enough :)
Now if we could do the same with the UNSC
well condemnations have no real consequences, there are other "status quo"-ist reasons for more nations abstaining and voting against
We really need at least a peacekeeping mission
I mean it's a nice sentiment, but a peacekeeping mission sanctioned by the United nations security council is a form of direct intervention - albeit with legitimate justification, most nations won't vote for it since they don't want to increase global tensions any further and few nations would want to commit the mannpower.
As well as all that, most Western governments (not necessarily the people tho) believe the Ukrainians are holding their own with the current amount of arms being supplied, and that further intervention isn't necessary anyway.
No, it’s probably because we need to politically show the wrong doing of Russia before we can step in
Ukraine is not part of nato, not part of the EU, but is part of the UN, however Russia had invaded with the idea that as a security member of the UN, it is their duty to step in and remove nazi extremism from the country
probably more anti-EU than pro Russia but hey
what does all that mean
If russia is removed as a security member it will end the reason to be in the war, but also will set a precedent that you can’t invade a country on the basis of stopping extremism
it do be a horse shoe theory
there was a vote to call for "an immediate full embargo on coal, gas, nuclear fuel and oil" from russia, 535 MEPs voted, 22 voted against
the 22 against were mostly from Far Left and Far Right parties
amazing how Putin is the great uniter, united all of europe, all of nato, and commies with nazis
He pulled a lelouch from code geass
well extremists are always unified in burning democratic instructions to the ground
...hence horseshoe theory
mhmm
its not like, legally binding
its a statement of intent
Lithuania's already signing things to be energy independent from Russia, now it's up to others
Practically speaking, ignoring Russia's fabricated justification for the invasion and the immorality and illegality of that, Russia cannot be removed from the security council because of it's veto power as a permanent member.
kind of sums up the stark flaws of the UN really.
Nah, I can tell you that that‘s not the case for the German MPs
ask them kindly to give up their veto powers?
@limber wagon better have a legally non-binding vote to suggest removal of the veto power
... well i'm not particularly familiar with Russophile German politicians
i would assume most grew up in East Germany pre-Reunification
fuck mick wallace
Partly, though business interests also play a big role in this
Mick Wallace has been criticised for supporting Venezuela, Ecuador, China, Russia, Belarus and Syria during his period as an MEP.[32][33] In November 2020, Wallace referred to Belarusian opposition presidential canditate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as a "pawn of western neoliberalism".[34] In February 2021, Wallace was reprimanded for using a swear word during a session of the European Parliament. Wallace had referred to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as being an "unelected gobshite".[35]
....
dont forget the tax fraud
So is this Mick Wallace guy like an Irish Communist? His takes seem hotter than the surface of the Sun...
In July 2014, Wallace and Daly were arrested at Shannon Airport while trying to board a US military aircraft. Wallace said the airport was being used as a US military base and that the government should be searching the planes to ensure that they are not involved in military operations or that there are no weapons on board.[26][27] Wallace was fined €2,000 for being in an airside area without permission, and chose not to pay. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison in default, and in December 2015 was arrested for non-payment of the fine.[28] Joan Burton accused Wallace of "putting Irish people at risk" of terrorism by repeatedly linking Shannon Airport to US-led wars "simply for the sake of some media coverage".
Wow this Wallace guy puts nutty British populists to shame
by most, we hope 'nearly everyone'
I can never tell, if they're actually nuts, or realise they can make a career from outrageous political views.
It doesn’t matter because in both cases it shows that they have no morals whatsoever
Which seems weird with the history between natzis and communists
that's why it's amazing

Not gonna post link cuz it contains a horrifying picture
They knew it was used for evacuations and still bombed it, what the hell
On TV they‘re mourning Zhirinovsky‘s death featuring a very sad Putin
Bozo mourning another bozo
Funny how he founded the "liberal democratic party" yet hes far more right than most Republicans
Yep
they're already blaming it on us
Now they’re talking about "precision air strikes"
Including strikes on "targets near Slavyansk" which might include the strike on Kramatorsk
Speaking of that, I overheard the most projecting thing ever, the pundits talked about how the west and ukraine are running a propaganda war in which "they blame everything on one side"
Probs someone with a gun behind the camera
Why do they even show these clips, the actual civilians seem distressed
They just talked to some apothecary and she looked incredibly uncomfortable
Oh the civilians are just afraid that the evil Ukrainian nazis would bomb their own population
Apparently they’ve established their own "police" in Zaparozhkaja oblast
And they’re openly showing that they’ve installed a new administration too
Oh yeah they did prepare a large number of "police" to "police" in "liberated" areas
But of course, how would the brave Schutzstaffel Rossijskaja Gvardija protect the defenceless population
I don’t understand how people don’t question the news, they claim that the "special operation" is going very well with no major resistance and then proceed to show a dozen soldiers who died yesterday
They dont need to try when you zombified a large number of the population who are trained to deny anything that doesn't fall with Kremlin's narrative
True
We dont know just how much of the population is aware it's all bullshit cuz they know they'll get arrested if they question anything
And you know, something I‘ve read and which I think is a very good take too is that they aren’t even focused on making people believe their narrative, but making them believe nothing
Kadyrov time!!!
My favourite
They’re showing soldiers shooting at nothing with traditional music playing

Create so many conflicting versions of events along with illusion of ouside hostility, so that people wouldn't know who to trust.
It helps them to distract everyone with pointless discussions about who lies more
Someone cranked up the contrast to read the meter about 30 seconds in, when it is at the outside of the camp. 71 μSv/h. About 3-4 chest x-rays an hour.

of note, this is just gamma radiation
given they were digging in contaminated soil, likely also some alpha and beta injested, doing further damage
(alpha and beta do little unless injesteted, as they struggle to penetrate the skin barrier, gamma has no issue but does less damage)
@Osinttechnical Roughly 51mSv for a troop to be exposed to that for a month. Realistically it's a lot higher due to radioactive particulate inside the body wreaking havok.
Thats greater then the max yearly dose for a nuclear power plant worker
in a month
@Osinttechnical Keep in mind they ate food with likely dirty hands contaminated with radioactive material, they more than likely burned wood for warmth, and they probably inhaled a lot of alpha/beta radiation emitting particulate when digging. The real number will be much higher.
oh yeah
this reading was at the camp built by the Russians in chernobyl
now in ukranian hands
Yeah thats a significant dose of radiation those soldiers recieved
The Russian MFA accused Ukraine of fascism for allegedly not sharing its borscht recipe
114
The original video is amazingly delusional
Bizarre comments by Maria Zakharova, the Russian MFA spox:
"Even cookbooks were banned [in Ukraine]. Why? Because they wouldn't share the borscht recipe... It had to belong to one people, to one nationality. They couldn't bear the thought that.. every housewife in the world
./1
hahaha
Exactly, and this is what I‘ve noticed when it comes to my grandparents too - they constantly accuse everyone of lying and say that there isn’t any truth to be found anyways. Russian media doesn’t have to convince everyone of their worldview, it‘s enough if people just talk about lies like you said as people who believe nothing will do nothing
Russia‘s media has also recently shifted to a new strategy, which isn’t denying the events but instead immediately accusing "nationalists" of being the perpetrators
This is also a part of inner politics propaganda.
Everyone is corrupt, everyone is a lier. There is no point in changing anything, next president/government official will be just as bad as the previous one. Staying out of politics is safer.
that's incredibly fucked up to say
I mean, that‘s the way it was in the Soviet Union
Yet we thankfully live in a different age now
Just asking to have people sabotage at this stage
Rot in piss, won't be missed

good to see Luhanks isn't nearly completely lost, as most maps like to show it 95% in the red
gotta turn those contested colours into blue

⚡️Zelensky reacts to train station attack in Kramatorsk:
“Lacking the strength and courage to fight with us on the battlefield, they (Russians) are cynically destroying the civilian population. This is an evil that has no limits. And if it is not punished, it will never stop.”

Are there any truths to that children claim btw? I dont know a great deal about the war in donbas other than that its a thinly veiled Russian fuelled independence operation
one of the main reasons for Russia to take control of Donbas is it's big reserves of oil and gas, if Ukraine were to keep them, they'd produce enough to be independent from Russia's energy, and also send huge amounts to Europe, reducing it's reliance on Russian energy too
(same goes for Crimea, though that mostly has gas underwater)
the "for our children" thing is def just for propaganda sakes
⚡️ Slovakia sends S-300 air defense system to Ukraine.
“We believe that this system will help save as many as possible innocent Ukrainians,” Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on April 8.

We don’t have full confirmation yet but it is likely to be real
the children thing has been ongoing for all these 8 years, mostly just propaganda
it's basically from the statement of "you've been bombing children in Donbas for 8 years"
Yeah, I'm having a hard time finding specific info.
This is the closest I got https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alley_of_Angels but even that is filled with a lot of citation needed
The Alley of Angels in Donetsk, Ukraine is a memorial for children of Donbas killed during the War in Donbas. At the entrance there is an arch made of forged roses interwoven with machine gun ammunition casings, a symbol of war, and doves, a symbol of peace. Under the arch there is a granite slab with the names and ages of the killed children.

The only thing thats reasonably reliable is the UNICEF claim https://twitter.com/UNICEF_UA/status/1046739870721474560
Three boys were killed and one was wounded by a mine explosion in Donetsk region, #Ukraine. The presence of mines and UXOs threaten the lives of 220,000 children in the conflict zone in eastern #Ukraine. Over 140 children were killed or injured by mines since the conflict started
182
But that only shifts the question to landmines. And I also can't get a definitive answer for that. Though evidence points to Russia/Russian-separatists, as there is a lot of mention of Ukraine attempting to defuse mines as more are planted https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2016/apr/04/ukraine-attempt-defuse-landmines-as-more-are-planted
⚡️ Chernihiv Mayor: about 700 people killed by Russia during siege.
This includes both soldiers and civilians, Chernihiv Mayor Vladyslav Atroshenko said on April 8.
Atroshenko said prior that 70% of Chernihiv was destroyed during the month-long siege of the city.

Pundit Nikita Danyuk: "Of course I think it's unlikely to be implemented, but I've got the impression that the denazification operation should in one way or another take place not only in Ukraine because what we're now seeing in the Baltics is an outright honouring of the Nazis"
