Unless by blitzkrieg he means slow and painful death
Then ye sure
is it just me or does it look like he aged 10 years in that pic
"We survived the earthquake, I can definitely not see any further tremors nope not at all I swear"
The worst part of an earthquake isn't it happening
It's the aftermath
Structures are damaged but not fully, so it only takes a small tremor to take skyscrapers down
Aftershocks are scary
What we have witnessed so far with the sanctions is the main earthquake
We just need that little shake and it'll all come tumbling down on putin
Hopefully
But so far it seems like Putin is trying to replace everyone he distrusts
And launch tons of lawsuits against everyone who opposes the government
I keep hearing dad's russian propaganda say "for victory, for country, for the president", and I can't help but think of the nazi posters "ein volk, ein reich, ein fuhrer"
I wonder why that sounds familiar
hmmmm
Also something else I‘d like to draw attention to is this short article, I believe that Kallas makes a very good point with the headline as well: https://news.err.ee/1608534163/estonian-pm-west-should-not-say-it-will-not-intervene-in-ukraine
hmmmmmm i wonder why
I hope he also replaces every competent doctor or surgeon around him
Wouldn’t that be wacky
The amount of denial in Russia is insane
An actual decent title that isn’t all click grab
Indeed, that‘s good public broadcasting for you
My understanding of global economies isn't the greatest, but this shit aint over right? it just means they 'survived' this payment, but I assume that its not just one payment?
Yeah
Like most countries they have a lot of debt in other countries
And this was just one deadline, there‘s more to come
So this just means they managed to not default for this month, but who knows about the next one?
Arguably the process could be sped up if the EU actually also disconnected Sberbank from SWIFT
Yup!
Well, I guess not every country will have the same payment date, so maybe not even month. just the next upcoming due date
Though they‘re also trying to negotiate some sort of deal with India
The details are a bit of a mystery as of now
India's stance has been a bit disappointing.
The point is that they are likely to default, but it might take months
Though I guess its because they receive a lot of military stuff from Russia
And they are still earning tons of cash through gas & oil exports
Yeah, India has become a close ally of Russia over the years
And while they don’t want to publicly be seen as close (e. g. by not voting on the UN resolution condemning the war), they do support Putin economically
I also love how I just posted the Kallas article and then Scholz says this https://twitter.com/kyivindependent/status/1504454758412824577?s=21
⚡️Scholz: NATO will not intervene militarily in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During a press conference on March 17, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that his country will, however, continue to support Ukraine.
1624
281
Kallas said that she complained about this to Scholz himself ._.
Scholz has been saying this like every day for the last 22 days
Indeed
At this point he spends more time talking about what he definitely won’t do than what he will do
https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1504448706174672897?s=20&t=dCWg_NOuF5bA_-Ec8OysZw https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1504448769307426819?s=20&t=dCWg_NOuF5bA_-Ec8OysZw
⚡️ Ukraine’s military intelligence: Syria to provide Russia with 40,000 mercenaries.
Some 150 Syrians were transferred to Russia to take part in its war against Ukraine on March 15; up to 300 are ordered to be sent to Ukraine every day.
2815
1017
More weapons and military equipment are planned to be transferred from Syria to Russia and Belarus soon, Ukraine’s military intelligence reports. According to the report, some Syrian mercenaries see this as an opportunity for illegal immigration to the EU.
2293
653
And note that this statement came right after Zelenskyy gave a speech in the German parliament
ah yes, the modern, advanced equipment from Syria
Terrific
which got it's modern, advanced equipment in the first place from...
checks notes
russia
👀
clownfest
Honestly I don’t think those Syrian mercenaries will stand a chance
Because like you said, they’ve poor equipment, but also incredibly poor morale
My German friend told me how they're so upset scholz got in during the election
Now I can agree that he's a fucking gobshite through and through
Because I highly doubt any of them feel that happy about fighting in Ukraine
but u see they fought the rebels in the desert, therefore they can deal with the early spring temperate climate and pown the up to date NATO armory
E.g. sending weapons that don't work to ukraine
Sand and snow are both solid, it‘s close enough
other than stuff from germ any
Scholz won the election by being as quiet and inoffensive as possible, and that‘s what’s backfiring now
And Lindner is being incredibly elitist once again
The only minister whose performance I‘m somewhat happy with is Baerbock
Because she‘s really doing a good job but it’s clear that her hands are tied because of Scholz‘ stance on this
Martin, the taoiseach here, is doing an ok job I'd say
That’s good to hear
He's not giving guns to ukraine partially due to how we've near none already here, but we're letting in refugees and giving them places to stay, as well as humanitarian aid
interrogators can't believe that it's possible to think for oneself
The UK are doing next to nothing and I saw sky news try to claim how kind the British people were when talking about refugees in Ireland
(u can watch the latest post in the pinned bbc news)
Yeah, I saw videos of how refugees are treated at Dublin airport and they were very wholesome
Next to nothing in aiding refugees, i mean
Militarily I'm pretty sure they're giving good NLAWS and such
Well, a lot of Brits signed up online to provide housing, but all of that is pointless if people can’t actually get to the UK
Yeah
Their visa scheme is a bad joke
Johnson government continue to be as hostile as possible yeah
I mean, the Home Office just does a poor job treating everyone
I‘ve heard of Brits who are more or less stranded in the EU because they can’t get the necessary documents to move back to the UK
And at the same time they can’t lead a normal life in the EU because one of the requirements for moving back is giving away their IDs
https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1504201062097563649 who doesn’t love random American journalists
The parliament of Estonia has formally demanded a No Fly Zone, which effectively means they have formally demanded that the US impose a No Fly Zone. Isn't it great to be in a sprawling military alliance with tiny countries who demand insane actions they could never do themselves
4339
793
fun fact: for every refugee the UK has let in
ireland has let in 67
ireland with like 1/15th the population of the UK
ehh
I disagree with parts of this
The chairman of the Reform Party said she had emphasized in a meeting with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday that the best way to achieve peace is to give a clear signal that the West will intervene if necessary to prevent the situation from worsening.
That's just threatening war
threatening an invasion of russia helps... nobody
It‘s not about threatening it, it‘s about not revealing all your moves
The prime minister said it has also been difficult for Putin to explain why he is attacking Ukraine, long regarded as a brother nation. Instead, he has built a narrative that NATO is attacking Russia.
....and by threatening to invade russia
Of course you can decide against an intervention
But constantly saying that you won’t get involved is helping no one
If anything, it just tells Putin that he can do whatever he wants
theres a difference between "we aren't ruling out escalation"
"vs"
"we will intervene"
will meanss, well, that it will definitely happen
Yeah
russia
No one‘s invading Russia either way
yet they are threatening it
nice
Almost at the edge of Kherson
I don‘t quite follow your logic if I‘m being honest, this isn’t about making decisions but about communication
I think that especially Scholz‘ statements are very counterproductive
she is saying you should threaten to invade russia
you shouldnt do that
I don't know what Scholz' has been saying
I've not been keeping up with the german response
I'm saying that paragraph, I heavily disagree with
Scholz has been saying the exact same thing for three weeks now https://twitter.com/kyivindependent/status/1504454758412824577?s=21
⚡️Scholz: NATO will not intervene militarily in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During a press conference on March 17, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that his country will, however, continue to support Ukraine.
1624
281
It’s even the same wording most of the time
I mean.... good?
I disagree
I don't see how saying nato wont intervene military is a bad thing
because we should not intervene militarily
Maybe we shouldn’t
there are next to no circumstances where we should
But constantly saying that out loud is sending a message that Russia is free to do whatever they want
Because Putin personally doesn’t seem to care about sanctions, he‘ll be fine, even if his country isn’t
No he won't be fine
thats like standing on a sinking ship and saying "ah sure ill be grand"
That’s what he‘s doing
Putin being delusion doesn't mean the sanctions arent having an impact on him, his leadership and his nation
yeah, so him "not caring"
means
nothing
because whether or not he cares
I mean, we‘re likely to see a "purge" in the coming weeks
the sanctions will still do the same damage to his economy
that will do the same damage to the oligarchs
who will plunge the same daggers into putins back
I wouldn’t count on the oligarchs alone
physically or metaphorically, we wait and see
I wouldn't personally give out that message Scholz did... but I don't see it as much of a loss either
and I don't agree with part of the estonians PM advice
He spends most of his speeches talking about what he won’t do
I think thats just raising tensions for no gain
Eh, but I get where you‘re coming from
I don't really know how Scholz has acted in the context of this invasion
bar the weapons transfers (good) and the military rearming (bad)
Note that the weapons transfers didn’t fully work out because he ended up shipping faulty missiles from the GDR
i know a lot from german friends about his pre-war domestic policies, which have been across the board good
lmao
It later turned out that they had been stored in some forgotten warehouse and were partly covered in mold
He had good ideas, but he‘s not exactly uncontroversial either
sure
And let‘s just say that his performance as chancellor is an entire different thing
but I much prefer him to the CDU

This seems like a pretty good video not just looking at all the optimistic things we hear from the pro-Ukrainian side of things, but also the videos from the Russian side of things. So it includes footage that we don't really see, because no one likes sharing videos of Ukrainian soldiers being defeated or their stuff being taken/blown up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igq2fqa7RY4
The third week of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is covered in the fog of war and that can be confusing. In this episode we investigate some of the Russian claims of victories and advances around the country to avoid falling into a cognitive bias trap. I suggest that we're living in a bubble thanks to the social media platforms that are pushing...
even if it isn't seen, I feel like people understand that there might be losses on our side too
they're just too little, comparing to occupant losses
I believe its important to also have a look at the things that you don't like to see. Otherwise your perspective gets warped and you wont be able to see the full picture. If you only look at pro Ukrainian sources, then of course things are gonna be biased towards being more optimistic. Especially if you also throw in sources from the Ukrainian government or military. Of course they're gonna tell as little negative things as possible, its in their best interest to not do so.
mhmm
and western governments also class as pro-ukranian sources

plus most (but not all) OSINT groups have agreed not to report some forms of intel on ukranian troops
which, for better or worse, reduces a lot of what we can see on the other side
That as well
(I say for better or worse simply as I'm not sure myself whether its for better or worse)
Depends on who you are. From our perspective its worse, since we get less info, but of course for the soldiers and people in Ukraine its better, because the less info about Ukrainian troop positions, numbers, capabilities, etc the better.
I think to myself though, about the second half
And this is mostly in the form of citizens reporting where troops are on Telegram and the likes. Everyone is gonna report sightings of Russian troops, but people are less inclined to report on Ukrainian troops. Especially after the government asked people to do exactly that
"Why am I saying its good they aren't reporting on ukranian capabilities or troop positions"
And I come to the conclusion > its because I support the ukranian side in this war
OSINT groups are, by nature, meant to be detached from state control and provide open source intelligence fairly to all
Which is what puts me in a moral :/
I dunno!
Moral decisions are complicated!
yknow, we are kind of fighting off a fascist menace that bombs pretty much everything and calls it a "special de-nazification operation"
so I think it is morally correct not to help them by any means, including reports of Ukrainian positions
oh of course, comparing being curious vs potentially less people being murdered is a very easy decision

I understand none of this
what's the catch
theres none
theres a direct correlation between being anti-vax and pro russia
if i had to guess, its linked to susceptibility to mis-information and or opposition to mainstream media standpoints
ah
I will say, n=1035 is kinda low. especially when you consider 85.8% of Canadians have had at least 1 dose
meaning that the 'vaccine refusers' (which btw is kinda a sussy group name) is only 147 people
they give the MOE as 3.1%
assuming the polling company has done their maths correctly, 3.1% really isnt bad
EKOS was the company behind the poll
I've not seen anything particularly positive or negative about them
Yeah, but is that for all the people or the smallest group?
All the people I think
also, that doesn't mean they polled 147 people who didn't take it
Its not that I don't neccecarily believe these statistics. Seems not unreasonable. But I find the name "vaccine deniers" a bit suspect. Since a title like that is kinda .... dunno what to call it
Poll weighting is a thing
it paints that group as just vaccine deniers while there are also people who just cant take the vaccine for other reasons. The fact that they gave it that name jsut makes me question how unbiased they are
me neither
soooo take it with a pinch of salt
tbf it says "vaccine refusers," as in, they refused to get it for whatever reason. it doesn't say they outright deny the efficacy or legitimacy of the vaccine
there might be people in that group who are unable to get it for medical reasons, but i'd imagine the majority are just anti-vaxxers
someone that cant take the vaccine due to medical reasons is not someone that refuses to take the vaccine
^
that's a fair point
they very specifically chose the wording vaccine refusers for that poll so that it would exclude medical excemptions
The problem is the naming. not the "well technically its still accurate". If they wanted to be neutral they could have just said "no vaccines"
which it isn't since not being able to take it isnt refusing in most senses
it's probably how they asked it in the poll since most people that refuse the vaccine are pretty vocal in their refusal and wear the title as a badge of honor (in my experience at least)
so due to asking it like that they dont immediately turn away the people they actually want to poll
yeah, i think you're right. i was really just correcting the language from "deniers" to "refusers" because i think those are different things
There is definitely a way too big group of that, but I also know several people who don't want to take it because they're genuinely worried about long term effects. Valid or not, its a lot different than being proud of your ignorance
my dad had some pretty nasty side effects from his 3rd dose
and has already said he'll refuse the 4th when offered
significant side effects are very rare, but I can see why they'd make more cautious/paranoid people wary, especially if they know someone who had negative reactions
beats dying from lack of oxygen
mhmm
But I can see why my dad - having gone to the doctors with massive painful swelling across the entire left side of his body - will be put off by that
I intend to get my 3rd dose shortly
became eligible start of this month, but wanted to leave it till after exams
as both 1st and 2nd dose have made me ill for a couple days
UK's only just starting 4ths, so will probably be near end of the year I'm eligible
at very minimum if they rush it to all 18+, it'll be 12 weeks after 3rd dose
since the uk has always enforced the 12 week gap between vaccines, where most nations did 21 days
canada was 12 weeks as well
but the waiting lists were so long most went a good 5-6 months in between doses
here there arent really waiting lists
except like, the first dose rollout
as we do ours in age bands
80+, then 70+, then 65+, then 60+ etc.
down to 12+

honestly probably
since it just goes by IP
I think its embedded as part of a java script library - coders use library to significantly reduce the amount of work to do certain functions
eg, instead of writing a full program for random, you use import the random library and ask for "new random number"
Meaning that any code that uses the library is infected

wait, no, node ipc is a library interconnecter
meaning its part of dozens if not hundreds of libraries
and millions and millions of users

Reminds me of the discourse I‘ve been seeing a lot online
Why would Orwell be jealous...?
E. g. The Ministry of Peace
poor defenceless russia is being forced to invade ukraine because of how strongly theyre defending, against the invasion
bcs he didn't think of this when writing his book
1984 if you wan't to look it up
yeah that makes sense
I‘ve seen people make that argument
Turned out they had written for RT previously
there is no fucking way
Such a coincidence
I don't think jealous is the word
well at that point its not in good faith, its just propaganda lmao
figure of speech
The horseshoe theory is back at it again
pls not
Well
There are actually very good takes on this when it comes to generally reducing our dependence on fossil fuels
how so?
No idea what the theory is about, but the statement of Russia being anti-war, trying to stop the war is just straight up bullshit
Both the extreme far-right and the extreme far-left are starting to mirror each other’s rhetoric
And I don’t understand why so many American pundits try to make this about the US
i mean, horseshoe theory is reductionist as hell
It is, it‘s just worth mentioning in this context
doesn't make sense, since american left is still right
A lot of people don’t seem to realise that your enemy‘s enemy is not always your friend
I do
Many Americans are very self centric and nationalists
everything revolves around america
if you take 2 war loving authoritarians that claim to be either far left or right, theyre gonna have similar war loving veiwpoints lmao
I‘m referring to more extreme standpoints than what’s considered leftism in the US
that horseshoe diagram
i think that's an utterly insane thing
ikr, fucking wild lmao
like i'm a very shaky catholic yet i'm incredibly left wing
and the left are very much not anti vax
Every catholic cannot care about the environment
well clearly you might as well be a fascist smh
Yeah, like I‘ve read essays with interesting takes on the crisis, but what strikes me is that treat Ukraine like the people there have no agency whatsover
yep
thats how american media treats every war
korea
vietnam
afghanistan
Libya
Yeah
its never about the people of that country
yeah pretty much
and both world wars
its about how it effects america
depends on who you talk to. but idk. Image was just to portrait what the theory is about
its hilarious honestly
true
lmfao
pan-shrekism killed me though
BASED‼️
lmao
no anarcho-monarchism
Lmao
Yakub is the anarcho monarchist
also I think this has gotten a little off-topic
your right, sry
true
Okay, I found the name of the journalist I was referring to, it‘s Caitlin Johnson
can we spread this a little more, it's very important
I know it’s important but I personally need more info to verify this because this is really an extraordinary fact if confirmed
^
This is an unbelievably heavy claim and thus requires a lot of evidence
is your evidence considered a report from independent journalists?
I don't have one, I'm just asking generally
with no sources with them
As far as I can tell all the reports are based on statements made by members of the city council
guess we'll have to wait for guardian or fucking whatever
how can you not believe your own family?
god thats fucking awful
yeah I've read of many people whose russian family members don't believe them, even when shown videos from the street, they're all just "oh dw they're only targeting military installations/ its the ukranian army bombing civilians"
propaganda be wild

i'd edit as "here you go, my dear bitch ass relatives, (observe) your "russian peace", fucks sake. my dear mom, how you keep fucking telling me that nothing's happening. There's my house, do you fucking see, you were here, you saw it before. Here, please, look at how we're sitting in the basement because this is beyond fucked"
wonderful how they reveal their plans this way
based and better than my translation
another opportunity to shoot themselves in the leg taken by russian forces, cheers
"this is what we're gonna do, but it wont actually be us, we're gonna be framed"
and of course they're blaming azov again
Went to a nearby village/very small town today
local pub had exchanged the english flag for the ukraine one
o7
my half ukrainian aunt that lives in london messaged me earlier asking if my dad could help a family of refugees, like if he's got some work or could give directions of who could help, showed my dad but he just said he's always too tired after work cuz he does that 6 days a week. so I told her that, while also adding, in english in case my dad ever saw the convo, that he's deep in russian propaganda and would probably not be the kind of person to help someone that the russian media constantly berates

didn't you know? It's all been a false flag so far!
based
that sounds rough
ive noticed a few ukraine flags in my town, which is really cool to see
nice to know theres support over here
it's really cool to see
The only flags I‘ve seen here are the ones of the local football club which coincidentally uses what basically looks like an upside down Ukrainian flag
❗️Marshall Plan No. 2: Poland talks about recovery plan for Ukraine
The Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki stated that it is necessary to prepare a plan for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which should be co-financed by the wealthiest European countries. He will raise this issue at the next European Council (24-25 March).

An example of the accounts I was talking about earlier…
fucking tankie
how do you going from being anti fascist and anti war to being pro russia
fr lmao
It's people who don't realise
you can be against american imperialism
AND
russian imperialism
AND
every other form of it
They basically deny Russian imperialism even exists just because they didn’t have any colonies in Africa 🤷♀️
Meanwhile russia conquering the entirety of siberia
then alaska
then invading japan
shhhh
Don’t forget the 19th century Russification policies of the Russian empire too
And the 20thC Russification policies of the USSR

this just helps russian propaganda
lmao
and fucks over a talented young person
:/
also wtf, town hall of a town in western ukraine, right next to Lviv, is on fire https://t.me/suspilnenews/8291
and him living in the west would have a very high chance of not being brainwashed by russian propaganda too
Russia's fired the first of its trans-sonic missiles to ukraine today
they're probably whats hit the west of ukraine
trans-sonic missiles are only remarkable in that they're fast as fuck (so can't really be intercepted), and have the range to hit all of ukraine
also this is terrifying, there used to be a smol red line around Mariupol, now they've made a massive land bridge
the rocket hit quite a bit south tho
I doubt theres just been one
hm
then there was a fuckup if they only decided to bomb some random town hall in a small town, those hypersonic missiles must be expensive as fuck

Russians online make it even worse: they're always trying to come up with some "solid" argument and act all cocky about it
constant comparisons to nazis, "where were you during 8 years of Donbas, you get what you deserve"
when you shatter all of these illusions, they still find shit to say
unbearable

I know that Russia has invaded ukraine and it is considered what we call “war”. But has Russia physically declared war on ukraine?
I ask this because I see people saying that Russia has declared war on ukraine. And I’m not sure if something has changed from when I first checked in here
I'm not sure
But Russia is really clinging onto calling it a "special military operation" in places like UNSC meetings so... probably not?
Officially, no
But that doesn't make it not a war
yup
the ICC has opened an investigation into war crimes in Ukraine so yeah
Putler and his braindead school of fish are calling it a "special military operation" but it's absolutely a war
Ok. So basically officially they haven’t but it is a war
Pretty much
so how close are we to getting to a month since the "especial military operation" or even the "peacekeeping mission" started
countries don't really declare war anyone
Legal Eagle has a good video on it
Nowadays official declarations of war have been rather uncommon, if anything, an act of aggression is usually recognised as such through resolutions
To quote the ICRC: In practice and under customary law, a declaration of war is no longer necessary for a state of war to exist; it suffices for one of the parties to make its intentions clear by actually commencing hostilities. Similarly, a formal declaration of war is not necessary for the application of international humanitarian law
Falklands wasn't a declared war but it was a war if that makes sense
