born in Florida, grew up in Virginia, currently live in SC
america is a net exporter of oil so you shouldn't be hit too badly
mr biden seemed confident in his speech
it already is hitting
before this
the US uses A LOT of oil
I'm perfectly fine with it
but I always knew there was gonna be a cost to sanctions like this, but they are needed
the US/NATO/EU/etc. has 4 options: 1. Do Nothing, 2. Only Condemn, 3. Sanctions, 4. War
and 3 and 4 are the only effective choices...but they each have costs
A war with sanctions is less deadly than one with bombs and bullets
Especially with a nuclear country
yeaaaah
So it is most logical this is the step that is taken
the only other thing we can also do is aid indirectly by sending equipment or funding or bring revolutions to the UNSC/UNGA or etc.
which doesn't include the whole stupid idea of a no-fly zone over Ukraine - _- people gave Hilary crap when she suggested that with Syria, its dangerous this isn't like Yugoslavia this is more direct with Russia
I believe they gave scrutiny due to how there isn't an air force there
As in ISIS doesn't have planes
yeah but the issue is Russia has planes and one mistake leads to a US jet shooting down a Russian jet
with Syria that would have taken a lot of coordination between the US and Russia
What's best then is supplying as many AA guns and as much ammunition to the Ukrainian army
if say it was passed by say the UNSC for the US or NATO or whoever to setup a no-fly zone then maybe
then at least it wouldn't directly be the US or NATO doing it
Ukraine needs weapons, give it to them no problem there
don't see the UNSC passing a no fly-zone tbh
well yeah I'm just saying if there was going to be a no-fly zone
besides that the only other way would be for a non-NATO nation to set it up
hey Finland wanna help :)
nice idea, and i know you're half-jesting with Finland being the example but Russia would just state the third party country was pressured by the west.
or a puppet or whatnot
well yeah but at least if their jets get into a fight than that doesn't trigger article 5 of NATO
The Swiss would be best then as they're a neutral party
maybe so, but it would still escalate things and would give Russia a justification for war with Finland... tho Russian forces are tied up in Ukraine or other borders atm
yh the Swiss sanctioned Russia
so they aren't purely neutral anymore
atm Israel are the mediator in negotiations between Russian and Ukraine
Also gotta remember one thing related to the oil/gas/coal ban that will impact more than just the price of gas at the gas station so the price of a lot of goods will go up
so I would argue Israel would be the best option
yep since oil is used to transport all goods -> all logistical, transport and commute costs go up
there's a stark correlation between oil price spike and recessions
Then again Israel are us allies
they're a major non-NATO ally yes
but they have fairly good relations with both Ukraine and Russia
I'm surprised the world hasn't learned from 73 and 79
With the oil crises
and are geographically removed from the conflict
Israel could be an option, they are fairly close. They do have a good military. Maybe there could even be a setup to land on Cyprus for emergencies. Wouldn't activated article 5
well oil is the 'path of least resistance', politicians don't have to spend taxpayer money investing in 'dangerous' nuclear plants or renewable energy.
doubt it will happen
probably won't
⚡️ Pentagon: 2,000-4,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine.
U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency Director Scott Berrier said that the intelligence community has “low confidence” in its assessment of how many Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine, CNN reports.

either way neither Ukraine nor Russia seem to wish to reach a ceasefire for the time being...
I mean what's the chance russia would respect a no-fly zone setup by the US, NATO, EU, UN, etc....now what's the chance of russia respecting one by Israel
more likely than that of NATO, since it would be a sign of weakness/submission obeying a no fly zone from the West
I mean even if somehow China setup one, Russia's relationship with China has always been shaky they would think China is being influenced by the West even if that wasn't true
I doubt that Russia would think that China is influenced by the west
sure they're paranoid but it's blatantly obvious there's animosity between the West and China since 2020.
yeah but also gotta remember this is Putin
why would russia respect a no fly zone made by anyone
so even through Putin's distorted lens he wouldn't see conspiracy
russia doesn't respect any military more then its own
they'd tell them to get fucked
and that they are flying where they want
a no fly zone isnt an agreement, its a military dictat
ah we're back
lmfao
https://twitter.com/Charles_Lister/status/1501268895939837954 us giving the traded planes to Ukraine!
some of the memes on discord going down are great
anyone worked out what caused it yet?
dunno but spotify has been down as well today
I'd speculate it be collateral from the increased frequency of cyberattacks atm.
that would make sense
oh shit we back
welcome back everyone
only pictures seem not to load
things that happened - McDonalds(finally), L'Oreal, cease operations in Russia, Poland sending all of it's spare MiG-29s to the Rammstein air base in Germany, which will then be transferred to Ukraine
McDonalds is temporary but thats huge nonetheless
They load if you open them in a browser on your laptop? Otherwise they dun load
especially symbolically
oh they do?
Ayyye
temporarily might mean until everyone else comes back tbh
as McD was one of the first companies to move to the USSR under gorbachev
Yee yee they did for me, you like right click the image and hit open in new window
discord is still having significant server provlems
hence images and shit still broken
might take a while

Idk. but i don't think it's that much of a loss tbh
again its more symbolic
them coming was a sign of the changing times for the soviets
them going even for now is a sign oof rapidly changing times
i got that point, but still. I think they have bigger issues atm
Just saw the Russians 3 demands on the news hot dam Putin sounds like a ass

Oh damn, McDonald’s is closing in Russia, last time I went there it was hard to find a restaurant because of the lack of windows in the town I was at and proper signs so I just ate McDonald’s every day when I was there because it was extremely easy to find them

Apologies if this has been posted already. I tried to take a couple days away from this thread and there were way too many messages to read up on them all
Hell yes
I love how they’re technically giving them to the US first
JAMES
Well Poland is replacing their fighters with what I only assume would be a fleet of F15s, and the us is sending the migs over to Ukraine, this is perhaps the smartest thing US has done recently after the botched withdrawal of Afghanistan. Instead of forcing the Ukrainian pilots to train on American built fighters, they give them Russian built fighters which they have trained on

i think the us is sending some old f-16s to replace the migs, poland already uses it so they won’t need any new training
Fair enough, and I believe the f16 is slightly better than the mig 29
Even though it’s slightly older
its more importantly about switching from russian based airframes to US ones
so you rely on america, not russia, for upgrades, maintenance, spare parts etc.
high prices hype
ysee
the issue is
russian exports wont hurt us as much as us banning their stuff
we'll see
of course
it will hurt
but not as much as them us
and if they ban gas oil etc they hurt themselves most

Who needs Russian state media to spread misinformation when private YouTube channels do an amazing job at it too!
yeah that's what my dad watches sometimes too
My grandparents used to watch Rossija 24 and NTV on YouTube
Now that those are banned they managed to discover some private channel that pulls off exactly the same lies
I find funny how they don’t mentions any reasons for the Euromaidan but just focus on the violence
And of course it’s not a good Russian YouTube documentary if not the US is not mentioned
Ah yes, the documentary is by Leonid Mlechin
Who has won numerous government awards… hmmm
Has anyone posted the itch.io bundle for ukraine stuff yet? And if not, is it okay to post it?

Oh boy oh boy, it's collapsing even further
What is the lowest a currency can go?
uh
As low as the government is willing to put up with before giving up and either making a new currency (ala Hungary in the 50s) or using someone else's (e.g. Zimbabwe using USD and the Yuan)
which will likely collapse too
if they tie it to the gold standard it doesnt mean people wont invest in it
Using someone else's currency is definitely something Putin does not want to do.... especially if they have to rely on the Yuan which makes Russia basically bow down to China
And inturn make their relationship not on equal footing, but where one is slightly higher than the other because the latter relies on the former to survive

Uhhh
wasnt poland supposed to transfer the MIG-29 jets to Ukraine?
honestly not sure what's going on here

i think they want to transfer it to the us so the us can send it to ukraine
yeah
The Pentagon said Tuesday that Poland's offer to give its MiG-29 fighter jets to the U.S. so they can be passed to Ukraine raises serious concerns for the NATO alliance and the plan is not “a tenable one.”
Yes, basically Poland said that they would transfer the jets to the US base in Ramstein for free
In exchange for American jets in the near future
This will seriously harm the US‘ reputation if they back down now
Because this was publicly announced by the Polish foreign ministry
And it’s one of the most pressing demands by Ukraine
Mhm?
poland wants to send planes to the us so the us can send said planes to ukraine
Well, Ramstein Air Base is in Germany
But legally the planes will belong to the US, yes
that sounds super fucking complicated
Eh, it‘s just including the US as a middleman before handing them to Ukraine
why
god knows
no wonder why the us would not accept that
Shared responsibility ig
Though in my opinion it would be much better to share responsibility with NATO instead of individual countries if they decide to take such a step
even worse idea
Why do you think so?
putin doesnt like the us

but he hates nato as a whole even more

its so obvious that russia asked for ukraine to never join nato so that it can more easily take control of the country
A quick process to join NATO was never on the table tbf
BCS NATO isn't ready to accept Ukraine
??
"Regarding NATO, I have cooled down regarding this question long ago after we understood that NATO is not prepared to accept Ukraine,"
I don't think NATO would even want to accept Ukraine when it's in active land war with Russia
Nato is not prepared for the chad Ukrainians
well not right now ofc
but hes basically saying that he's okay with bargaining about his country never being able to join nato, or at least not in the future
They have already made me reconsider this “near peer” threat
Well I was constantly told that Russia is a near peer threat, essentially saying that if war was to come, then Russia and the US would be in for a very long drawn out war, but the current crisis has already revealed he Russian reliance of foreign powers, mainly economically, and while US is not considered self sufficient, if we were tossed in a similar situation, Russia would wish it had the same problems we did. Russia is having the same problems napoleon did nearing the end of the war
Oil
I don’t doubt that they have some form of self sustainability, but they are already showing very huge issues
Both in logistics and morale
the issues of logistics are morale aren't based on foreign powers
^
That's based on decades of corruption and a huge decline in competency among military heirarchy
followed by following goals more for show then for practicality
True, reliance is perhaps not the word to use
(see the fact their army has 1mn active personnel, with the same budget as the UK, which has 150k)
having huge numbers of conscript soldiers looks good on paper
but not in practice

If he does trade off east ukraine and crimea what would the backlash be like?
I mean a lot of people died for all of the country, I don't see how giving up so much territory would be welcomed by Ukrainians
Wouldn't that destroy his current reputation as "the president of the people" basically setting the standard of what a leader should be???? Is he getting desperate????
He likely is weighing the costs and risks
He knows he can't join nato

Western media can you maybe don't celebrate fascists
That symbol is sonnenrad, which has origins to the Norse, the kyivan rus was heavily inspired by the Vikings, I don’t think this has anything to do with the nazis this time
The Black Sun (German: Schwarze Sonne) is a Nazi symbol, a type of sun wheel (German: Sonnenrad) employed in a post–Nazi Germany context by neo-Nazis also in some strains of Satanism. The symbol's design consists of twelve radial sig runes, similar to the symbols employed by the SS in their logo. It first appeared in Nazi Germany as a design ele...
The symbol was appropriated by the nazis
yeah
I doubt Ukraine soldiers will wear a patch like that if it was not their unit insignia, the kyivan rus was founded by Vikings and Ukraine probably has put some of their history into their designs for their units
They do have a neo nazi national guard unit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov_Battalion
The Azov Special Operations Detachment (Ukrainian: Окремий загін спеціального призначення «Азов», romanized: Okremyi zahin spetsialnoho pryznachennia "Azov"), also known as the Azov Detachment, Azov Regiment (Ukrainian: Полк Азов, romanized: Polk Azov), Azov Battalion (until September 2014), or simply Azov, is a right-wing extremist, neo-Nazi, f...
But idk how widespread that shit it. A lot of the russian propaganda keeps talking about how all of ukraine is neo-nazi, but that is completely false. But they do appear to have a bit of an issue if there is an entire official battalion of them
@lilac sparrow No... its definitely a nazi symbol
Its like saying Adolf Hitler wasn't wearing a swastika, he was wearing a 3000year old Hindu symbol
the only place you'd seen the pagan symbol is an archaeological site
Seeing a bunch of confusion here. The Kolovrat (first) is a pagan Slavic symbol. Sure, it's used by right wingers, pagans and panslavic movements alike. There's context.
What you're seeing on most soldiers is the 2nd one. That's The Black Sun - 100% Nazi symbol, in all contexts. https://t.co/Ad6IyrBZf4

Fair
I've seen a lot of posts on twitter basically saying "see, they're all nazi's" together with a picture of that battalion in a picture where they also have a nazi flag. and then and then claiming all the russian propaganda about that is true. But that of course is complete bullshit. its a country of 44M people, of course there will be idiots. You can do the same for literally every country.
US for example
yes
but things need to be put in to context. its concerning, something should be done about it, but lets not pretend a single group paints an entire nation
Nationalism definitely rises through the roof in times like this
But idk if that also equates to right wing extremism and neo nazism. seems a bit of a leap
I mean
Azov was born and rose as a result of maidan/the donbass crisis
in 2014
and used conflict to grow and expand
Fair point
I am kinda expecting that this will be addressed in their EU membership requirements. If it isn't I will be disappointed.
I'm hoping the huge amount of photos of soldiers wearing nazi symbols
is mostly isolated on mariupol
but I aint so sure of that
Yeah, idk either, but I havent seen any evidence to that not being the case.
Who knows at this point

hmm (guardian)
Don't you know Val? Talks require you to invade a country and siege its cities.
but of course, how could I not
man the last few days feel messy, Zelenskyy having second thoughts about joining NATO, and thinking of bargaining with Russia about the occupied lands just so they would fuck off, and other politicians in general being very negative about the western allies
on one hand, kneeling to the aggressor and agreeing on the goals of keeping some of the land would mean all the suffering, destruction and death would be for nothing
but on the other, it might prevent more people from dying
nah, it's not for nothing
nor the exact scale of the probable renewed assult on kyiv thats been reported
I know for sure they ain't giving real casualty numbers either cuz that might affect morale
That sacrifice would be to defend the rest of Ukraine
We know russias goal was complete annexation
sooo a piece deal only giving up the donbass and crimea, while heartbreaking, would de facto not lose ukraine any land
I do suppose that 'only' annexing the donbas region does allow Putin to save some face and claim that that was the goal all along.

Thing is, I'd love to say ukraine should fight on and not accept a peace deal

Or maybe they don't want to hurt the west and Russia feelings

So why is it that the end consumer price must go up at the same rate as the cost to buy, maintaining equal profits for the companies
So the people get squeezed
why not squeeze the companies instead
If the base cost of oil rises 30%
so the government increases the end cost cap 30%
Oil companies profits remain constant
people pay 30% more
what if instead the government froze the cost cap
and made companies profit drop, instead of costing the end consumer
How are we douing
in wartime the government should prioritise the people... not a group of oil companies
if "we all must make sacrifices", that includes companies
This war will be the biggest wake up call for western nations since the start of the pandamic
sadly they won't wake up and do anything useful
they'll just switch to a new dictator for oil
and waste more money giving it to the military
you dont seem to understand that oil companies need to buy the oil too lmfao
yes I do
as i said before, oil companies rely on razor thin profit margins
which is why they are so sensitive to changes in the market
if they were pushed down
razor thin profit margins
they would almost immediately go into the red
+174bn dollars profit
I aint no economist but gaining 174bn in a year doesn't seem too bad
the number of people buying gas turns those razor thin profit margins
into massive amounts of money
Sooooo why don't we decrease those margins further
- thats ALL gas companies
why should gas companies we protected by law to always make a profit
because the most you could do is probably like a few cents
especially when they explicitly try to push up prices by restricting how much they drill for
i wish all oil companies a very go bankrupt
mood
though not right now
hold the prices steady, make oil companies have to figure out how to make it profitable
rather then people
until we finally transition
please dont pretend you understand how this works
@fierce arch hi question
if prices are so razor thin
explain to me what france and the uk do differently
that Frances price cap rose 13% and the uks 44%
because markets are volatile and lots of factor affect the prices
is it really that complicated
such asss
come on if you're the expert and understand how this works
surely you can bless us with an explaination
or maybe I could do it
seems simple enough to me
take €8.4bn hit
and therein lies the issue
you can hate gas companies all you want but the simple fact is that they are all public companies
so what seems like an innocent loss
can affect a lot of people
from retirement funds to individuals
so how does that effect the entire nation
public stock trading is a cancer
when'd i say it did
that hit means every single person in the country has a 30% less gas price rise then in the uk
at the expense of... some peoples stocks and pensions
idk man seems good to me

wdym
France, Germany and Spain have all introduced these measures
gonna be honest I've not seen any convincing point why they shouldn't also be in the UK
bar people bending over backwards for oil companies
i'm not gonna say that oil companies are perfect and we should all accept our new gas overlords
I mean
-_-
"why not print more money"
okay thats better
concluding points: gas companies are money hungry leeches who need to be heavier taxed and have profits slashed before any price rises hit the customer 👍
either way you'll be fine if prices rise by 50%
I hope they only rise by 50%
its good that heating won't be an issue in the coming month but man
also did you forget about the like
hundreds of thousands of people
employed by these companies
(I blocked you racc so I'm not gonna respond, as a fyi)
rude
theyve already risen by 44% since the start of the year here 😢

imo it’s time for a nato to call vladdy’s bluff and enforce no fly zone. maybe not the entire country, just say it’s for nato’s security interests/fleeing refugees and only do the western half or something. the way i see it, one of 3 scenarios could happen:
1 (most likely imo): russia takes no/very little action against nato, as they’re already struggling pretty bad with ukraine
2: russia goes to war and gets bent the fuck over by nato’s combined power
3: russia launches nukes and everyone dies. i think this is the least likely because russia doesn’t actually need to have ukraine. putin is a mad man, but i bet even he knows it’s not worth causing the apocalypse to take it.

just say it’s for nato’s security interests

thats how everyone dies
russia is just going to conquer everything they want as long as we cower in fear every time they say the word “nuke”
time to call their bluff

ireland?
I don't want stuff to escalate
Ireland yes
The threat of Russia seeing nations sending military aid as acts of war or whatever putin called it, has more reasons to be feared, since some of the nations, like Finland, aren't part of NATO iirc, so it'd be easier to "prosecute" these nations, as opposed to nuclear suicide.
i know you dropped this convo but one important thing is that a no fly zone assumes shooting down russian planes, which can easily escalate into a declaration of war by russia and potentially the CSTO

Apparently there is a new conspiracy going on that claims the US is funding bioweapon research facilities in ukraine or something like that. And russia is also making these claims?
No pictures of course, just the claim
But lets for a moment entertain the idea. Why the hell would the US, build numerous bioweapon facilities, something that can be considered top military secret in a foreign country thats right next to another very big country with which they've never had the greatest of relations.
Like seriously, sometimes these claims are very stupid

wasn't posting pows against the server policy?
There was a discussion about it in the mod team and videos of POWs are kind if allowed, as the server wont get in trouble since reddit is just full of those, plus the message about POWs was unpinned
Ofc it's best to not post videos of POWs getting brutalised
i sent a video of one being treated before well and people still demanded to delete the message
I guess back then people were unsure
I mean, it was never a risk of the server getting in trouble, was a case of "do we consider this the right thing to do"
I was the first person who brought it up as I felt it wasn't, and we shouldn't be doing it

This worrying indeed, I think Zelensky is getting desperate in a bad way, but his sense of sanity is still going strong. Does he really want to rethink their potential membership only because the western leaders won't hear his plea (aka closing skies) which would mean ww3?
a while ago they were supporting it
Oh my god this is amazing, Russia is becoming completely isolated even from their allies
I believe that's only currently serving troops
Yup I've seen retired troops from all over the world volunteering in Ukraine
but this post talks about troops too
You mean ex troops
I really really hope Zelensky with the almost abundance of support ukraine is getting would not make him think of having second thoughts on NATO 🙏 again
it just says "british troops"

That can be vague and can mean ex and currently serving? Ex troops can't be called veterans yet, but they have retired? Hm .

overheard what the russian media is talking about, and they've now went on obsessing over "bioweapon labs" that were apparently made by the US, and it's all they ever talk about, or how Ukraine constantly shells Donbass, but absolutely nothing about how their army is doing
as much as it pains me to say the war crimes are the norm now - in fact it seems to be part of the Russian military doctrine to break civilian morale and passive resistance.
are there any new developments to unconventional weapons being used, or changes in the Kremlin's uncompromising attitude towards peace negotiation?
Well, there was some sort of TV event for their "fallen heroes"
No, though as far as I can tell, this isn’t about possibly membership in NATO anymore but about the EU

Russia is losing the information war and despite the brutal clamp downs on anti-war protesters and the propaganda department clutching straws to fabricate a new justification for their war of aggression in which they're sending young men to die in - Russia will struggle to continue to control the narrative as the Russian people start suffering from the economic sanctions.
I bet it‘s just an excuse to punish whoever came up with these terrible paratrooper ops

probably a thing Kremlin wants to spread and add it to the "list" of reasons why they're invading
it would've been dumb for the US to place their top secret shit in a country like Ukraine, that's not part of NATO, EU, and is close to the most batshit insane country on the planet

I think they might just blow it up
only saying that ammonia isn't deadly enough to be used in chemical warfare. But as far as the article goes, it could still be used to drive peoples out of their shelter (no facts, just as a thought)
^^
not sure why they'd use ammonia for that
I mean, ammonia is an important precursor to various chemicals
in a practical seminar, i once had the misfortune to smell pure ammonia and i can tell you, it's no fun

Starstreak is a British short range man-portable air-defence system (MANPADS) manufactured by Thales Air Defence (formerly Shorts Missile Systems), in Belfast. It is also known as Starstreak HVM (High Velocity Missile). After launch, the missile accelerates to more than Mach 4, making it the fastest short-range surface-to-air missile. It then la...

UK Starstreak missiles are seriously nasty & small anti-aircraft missile w/three dart warheads.
Being laser beam riding, Russian flares are useless to decoy them.
They are much faster than a Stinger & all the operator has to do is keep the crosshair on the aircraft.👇

@KiarKini @MB_Drapier @0x0000F5 @TrentTelenko You need to be on the simulator weekly, with regular live firing camps, on these things - the skill fade is incredible. I used to train guys on these things. So I'm skeptical, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
-soldier who used them
sadly it'll take quite a while to get these in action
as it takes a lot of training and skill to use em
honestly probably be effective as a deterrent more then anything else
might need to be verified here
Wouldn’t that make civilians combatants though?
yea
Civilians are protected against attacks, but they lose that protection during the time of their effective participation in hostilities.
US House passes ban (H.R.6968 - Suspending Energy Imports from Russia Act) on Russian fossil fuels, will move on to the Senate https://rollcall.com/2022/03/09/russian-energy-ban-passed-by-house/
Question with more and more companies, businesses and restaurants suspending operations in Russia.....and genuinely hurting the Russian people, (I have seen the toxic comments already especially the toxic comments to CD Projekt Red) wouldn't that make regular Russians hate us even more?
suspending operations in Ukraine
I think you might have the wrong country here
Oops re editing that........but it's either that or just a Natural reaction to basically losing all that they took for granted due to war
Also in terms of businesses, they often bring money into the economy and the toxic comments are people looking for someone to hate on and just seizing an opportunity
Hmm, with regards to the video games community, I guess it's just people whining they can't play the latest games anymore, even trying to argue that they shouldn't be going away because they themselves are trying to protest the war 🤷
apparently this is something of a mistranslation
and no it doesn't make them combatants - until they enter combat
its just authorising the use of lethal force in self defence
(take this with a grain of salt as I can't translate this myself, thats just according to my friend)

Sure

Everywhere I look there are adverts asking people to donate to Ukraime in their fight against the fascists, billboards, bus stops and even the radio
Lithuania knows its next if russia wins
Hmm, I should pay attention to that. I've seen a few flags, and I've heard a few adverts, but not that much else. Sad, but ig it makes sense I guess, since we're a bit further removed. Though it might also just be because I havent really been to a lot of places recently.
⚡️Kuleba: “I came here with a humanitarian purpose, to walk out of the meeting with a decision to arrange a humanitarian corridor to and from Mariupol.”
Kuleba said they didn’t reach an agreement with Lavrov.

Lavrov claimed they didn't start a war with Ukraine so that was enough
Russia will only hold ceasefire if Ukraine succumbs to it's options
when the topic came to russian economy he just said "we'll take care of it ourselves"
Remarkable news for tech law nerds. EU sanctions against Russia Today and Sputnik require:
- search engines to delist all their content, and
- social media firms to delete posts by individuals which reproduce any of their content.

RT and Sputnik are russian propaganda, yes, but I really dislike the precedent set here
search engines required by lawmakers to delete any trace of entire companies
Yeah, thats mildly concerning tbh
Will have to watch carefully to make sure this doesn't get used in more malicious ways...
But they are spreading russian propaganda
Its more about general freedom of expression than it being Russian propaganda. I agree, they shouldn't have a voice, but some lawmaker being able to say "we don't like what you're saying so now you're gonna disappear from the internet" is not something that sounds like a good thing to me
What guarantees are there that this will remain limited to just russian propaganda?
Plus I like to believe that generally enough people are able to fact check and see through bullshit for propaganda to have a major effects in an environment that allows for freedom of expression.
And its not like many people believed or read those websites in the first place, not enough for it to matter, so does this have that much effect? People who believe this will still be able to get their sources from elsewhere anyway.

The street where the dublin Russian embassy is now named independent ukraine road
Will add that blocking something makes it harder for people to fall in to something like that. Often when certain groups are banned from social medias it becomes harder for new people to join, as there are less people exposed to them. But it also further isolates those groups to places where their extremist views can fester.
Joining Latvia Lithuania Norway and albania
Servers for PlayStation Russia are down
No new PlayStation systems to be sold in there
an example I think are Incel and TERF groups, which have been banned from a bunch of social media's, and in response made their own platforms. Those platforms immediately started becoming more and more extreme, as they now didnt have to deal with outsiders commenting or viewing them, or obeying the sitewide rules. and this isolation and increase in extremism leads to a decrease in people being exposed to it and also a decrease in the amount of people who do get exposed to it falling in to it
@limber wagon There's also a significant difference between ban from a social media, and banned from being listed in search engines
the latter is monumentally more severe
its basically your site being cut off from the entire Internet
Plus the social media bans
thats unbelievably harsh

Many argue that sanctions are "ineffective". That’s false. They are already highly effective in undermining Russian military efforts and can be made even more efficient. They can guarantee that Russia loses this war if they are goal-oriented and not moral crusade-oriented🧵 https://t.co/gfLhTUIvqw

well of course, they're gonna need it themselves as well
But like
This is not going to affect the west to nearly the same
Like
I've never seen a Lada here
yeah, but its not just about hurting the west, its also about saving yourself. A lot of imports just got disrupted, so its inevitable that a bunch of production chains are gonna break. and its better to quickly halt whatever production you've still got going from exiting the country
