All of this damage and destruction makes me believe more and more that Russia isn't intending to annex Ukraine, but rather divide it in to 4 like we saw in that image.
Since annexing against such an angry and at this point definitely anti-kremlin population is not gonna go well. That would take at least a decade of having to hunt down and suppress separatist groups. Not to mention having to pay for restoration.

Seems more likely to me that dividing up ukraine and installing puppet rulers will be the goal. As this way Russia doesn't have to deal with the fallout as much

firstly - to weaken Russia's economy to make sustaining military operations too costly in the long term.
secondly - to tempt the wealthy Oligarch industrialists and capitalists propping up an aging and increasingly detached Putin to find a new man to back.
thirdly - to show the West and Ukraine are united against expansionist Russian aggression.

"defaulting" also reduces the likelihood that a 'would be' investor will buy bonds in the government in the future - making it more difficult for that government to raise money to fill shortfalls in the budget.
