i wont believe anyting these days before it gets fact checked to hell
Alright cool. I shall tune back in then
most paratrooping attacks to sieze airfields are high risk
Either this is gonna world war 3 or it'll be a really quick conflict. No middle ground
hope ukrain gets some boys into the air soon
and the paratrooper vanguards often find themselves surrounded and run out of supplies without airdrops/ reinforcements or a coordinated ground push
^^
Which also applies to air assault
right my bad airborne
My money's on an insurgency. Even if the Russians manage to "win" quickly, there's gonna be an insurgency
im used to ww2 history not modern war
I mean same diff, it’s a highly mobile strike force able to deploy infantry and light mechanized
That's the last time something like this has happened tbh
Yeah, there were tanks with parachutes near Pskov
This does feel like something that would happen 50 years ago, not today
but I'm glad they recaptured the airport. If they hadn't, it might have been over already
It started less than 24 hours ago, it's not going to be over for some time no matter what happens
Well in Europe at least right
Yeah
They would have had a much easier time if they retained it
i realy hope i can at least have a peacfull ski trip i now that sounds bad ass hell but i realy want to have my few minuts of peace before exam stress
Best of luck on your exam man
i will ofcource be keeping an eye on the situation
are you talking about hostomel airport?
Honestly I've lived through so many ridiculous world events before the age of 30 that this doesn't shock me and that's sad
i have lived true to many before being 18
I haven't even reached 20 yet
I'd argue that the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan was the last time something like this happened. The Afghan's were embroiled with a Communist uprising, and the Soviet's went in to help install a new Commie government.
Fast forward to today, and Ukraine has been embroiled with separatists in their eastern regions for a while. Now, Putin is going in to install a Russian-friendly government (like Belarus, which is practically a Russian puppet state, and why they're (the Russians) have been able to invade from the North and get close to Kyiv so quickly).
The only difference here is that Ukraine is in Europe, and surrounded by NATO
Chechnya is more equivalent to this imo
Yeah
they are still fighting https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1496928031474171905
CORRECTION: The report was by Oleksiy Arestovych, an advisor to the president, not by the armed forces.
He has deleted his initial report and said that the fighting is continuing in Hostomel.
Oh
thats why we fact check peapol
man
Pushkin Square, maybe less than 1000 meters from Red Square and the Kremlin, is the cite of a significant protest. These people know the risks of challenging the regime. They’re on the street in-spite of major personal costs. https://t.co/bYEfbO91xG

to be fair, they reported it as emerald said before correcting it themself
be strong free Russia
This is all so surreal
Yup
Yep
I was so sure that they were bluffing
How close to Kyiv
The protests, my god. These people are brave souls
not kyiv thats moscow
Putin, a former Soviet spy in East Germany, feels threatened by NATO's expansion and reach across Eastern Europe. He longs for the days when the Soviet Union/Russia was a major power. He's trying to flex his muscles and distract his people (and the world) from Russia's internal troubles (their economy has been stagnate for awhile now). But his people, and the people of the world, are seeing through the façade and are rising up in protest. No one wants war. Only Putin.
I mean the invasion
there still a way's of
huge fucking support for those people
the decleration was less then 24 hours ago peapol
Absolutely!
Aye
There's a lot of people in Russia. More people than jail cells, more people than police.
Protests are erupting in several Russian cities tonight against Putin's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, along with attempts from police to forcibly suppress them. Here's his hometown of St. Petersburg. I'll be threading videos below as I find them. https://t.co/B5MyG5E4ou

thread of many protests all over russia
I mean, it's not an issue of factchecking
its an issue of "A member of ukraine cabinet got it wrong"
its good at least that a lot of people are willing to protest in russia
whether or not it'll be enough to stop a dictator is another thing, but its definitely a good thing
May I ask where this is from? It's not on the main article.
The information, was from a valid and trusted source, with nothing really to counter it, it just turned out not to be correct, sadly
At least the general populace sees and is willing to rise against the problems
Gods help and protect the people of Ukraine and Russia who are standing up to this BS
yuppp
It is? It's literally the main picture that is constantly updated when needed
People marching through central Moscow this evening chanting “No to War!” https://t.co/BTQ3ZOGTan

maybe they saw the president of ukrain's speech
i mean its likely they just, dont want their government to invade another country lol
@clear creekto answer ur question from gen pub, it's a bit unnerving what's happening south-east from here, especially since I have some family there, but Biden has said the US will still defend us and other NATO eastern Europeans
thx
oh where are you from, if i may ask?
lithuania
ethnic russian tho
won't be able to speak in russian with fam when outside in case people are gonna throw stuff at us
As much as I said "Russia isn't stupid enough to invade Ukraine" and they did, they DEFINITELY aren't stupid enough to invade any NATO members
So like what happened
That would be a death sentence for everyone
oh i see, tough day for all eastern europeans
Russia declared war on ukraine
Why don’t they just like stop
This man spittin
He said what we're all thinking
well that was the idea of the diplomatic talks
Putin is completely delusional and the world is in fear
yeah i doubt it a lot, but again its impossible to know what tf putin is panning next
Do you think he’s become more delusional due to his isolation from Covid?
Putin is incredibly insistent on taking Ukraine and threatening anyone who opposes him
are you safe, val?
One of the reasons they're invading is to stop Ukraine from joining. Ukraine is really the only remaining former-Soviet-non-NATO member that isn't aligned with Russia
Bamba you’re a twitch mod now?
Moldova to some extent
Ukraine wouldn't be able to join NATO with separatist states within their country anyway
Belarus was apart they aren’t in nato
But Belarus is under russia's thumb
Putin really just wants to conquer and reform Greater Russia
But they were planning to do something with NATO military things in Ukraine, right?
yeah, no air sirens so far
What’s an air siren
Stay safe, val
Aye
Like bomb warning?
Best of luck to you
haha yeah
Air siren warns you of an Air raid
there were talks of bypassing certain rules to allow Ukraine to join NATO
🫂
Ye… islanders still suck
Think missiles, planes, that stuff
Belarus is practically a Russian puppet state (Lukashenko, the Belarussian "president" is often described as "Europe's last dictator")
yes
this is definitely gonna skyrocket international tensions for a long while, but i dont know if russia will want to go further than ukraine
Wow, are you inland or on the coast
Air bombardments tend to occur before ground invasions
but it isn't really feasible inviting a nation with breakaway states into a defensive pact without being drawn into those separatist conflicts
i thought they were just set on certain regions
Yeah
which wouldn'tve been gone through, since it would provoke a war with russia (the irony)
I think Putin will. There’s been rumored plans that he will try to get like Finland and maybe Poland
Wait Val are you in Ukraine If so PLEASE STAY SAFE 🙏🙏🙏
I don't think they're gonna stop at ukraine
Tbh hell probs keep going until he’s stopped
finland would mean going against sweden, norway and denmark too
putin's crazy but i don't think he's gonna try and conquer Europe
Ye
I reckon Moldova is gonna be next, with it's contested region on it's eastern side that I can't spell
I mean he’s got bombs, nukes
I think going against Finland would be more like digging his own, snowy grave
unless provoked he'll probably stop at Ukraine
Of course
If Ukraine joined NATO, or became an ally of NATO, Russia would basically be blocked from Europe (in terms of land access)
Putin is trying to conquer what he can, aka nations not pat of NATO
He took Allez Allez Allez to literally
Honestly bro they just need to get their money up
so firstly Putin will try to conquer as much of Ukraine as he can, mostly east of the river Dnieper
agreed, there probably wont be any winners if he declares war on a nato nation
Ukraine remains the one non-Russia-aligned-non-NATO-state bordering him (or at least one of the last ones remaining)
The Sanctions are gonna have a pretty large effect at the very least
Yes
Probably
I could see China form an alliance with Russia
Have a strong alliance*
They already do to some extent
What's the current state of the invasion, how far in are they?
But it’d be interesting if China broke that alliance off
secondly if Russia can take Kyiv and collapse the Ukrainian government they can push west of the Dnieper
From wikipedia
Obviously not confirmed but yeah
I’d assume further because they have Russian hospitals set up too.
especially if every other military power joins since at that point it would be a WW3
he's in lithuania
it would be suicide
Exactly
Idk
As bold as Putin is, he doesn't have a death wish
It's a NATO country right?
Yup
But I still think places like Moldova are at risk
Maybe Putin is thinking he is gonna die soon so might ass we’ll go with a bang.
All the Baltics are
That map is already out of date unfortunately
He's not some supervillain
well
Luhansk/Donetsk at a stand still, paratroopers forced out of Kyiv airport, Russian forces pushed into Chernobyl region.
Not likely
he is but
this is handy
you get the point
The Baltics are NATO, yeah (except for Finland and Sweden, I think)
They're not Baltics necessarily
Oh fuck he's gonna go after Ireland
Chernobyl's been captured
I know they won
Fell bad for Finland if something happens cause they just won gold in hconey.
And all the other countries
and Russian forces on the back of naval superiority have made huge gains in Kherson
The northern front has moved south and it doesn't show kyiv airport in Russian control
irish fishermen > the entire force of russia
It gives a general idea though
as much as putin is insane enough to pull this shit, there has been tensions between ukraine and russia for a good while, especially when it comes to nato being in the picture
true
Ye
Accurate
cant say i know anything about belarus tho
They've reached as far as Chernobyl IIRC
Belarus is a Russian puppet
Basically Russia, mini
they have given access to Russian troops allowing Russia to invade Chernobyl
also russia has been preparing this for a long while, building up narratives and spreading disinformation
Do you think if they do touch nato countries it will escalate to nuclear war
Plus building like tent hospitals and setting up
Their 'president' is frequently referred to as "Europe's last dictator"
but Belarus themselves aren't directly involved in the war ... yet
If they touch NATO we are in a world war
rural irish farmers > all world powers combined
true
Russia won't touch NATO
Tf is Biden talking about
According to a Ukrainian official shelling hit a nuclear waste depository as well
he sure would, if he could. But he can't
I hope you're right
That’s whT my history prof. Was saying. She thinks he’ll try to get Finland, Ukraine, Belarus
there's no reason to while they're involved in the Russo-Ukrainian war
Does everyone have there Nuke bunkers Ready
Putin is a former Soviet spy. He dreams about the Soviet Union
Knowing Putin he'll clean up Moldova and Georgia before messing with NATO
easier targets
But Finland is gonna affect the Nordic Council so
I think he will go until he’s stopped
we need to think about the present
No reason to get Belarus. It's practically a Russian puppet state
apart from full integration
no sanctions on russian oligarchs. so no pressure
Exactly
Very good point
US Congress is working on sanctions against them
Russia isn't going to annex Ukraine in any case, they're going to create an essential Puppet state
But Congress being Congress, I don't know how effect it'll be
Warsaw Pact 2: Electric Boogaloo
basically, yeah
true, but theres not much we can personally do other than just spread facts and speculate rn
You're right
i just read this
it's unfortunate, but the west can't do all that much
Sanctions and sending defensive weapons are about the limit
White House Press Conference has been pushed back to 2:45 US Central Time (3:45 PM US Eastern Standard Time)
Ah
God damnit
Extremely russian names to the point where they look like they were made up by someone with no knowledge of russia beyond the stereotypes
Off topic but do u think this would be different for the US if trump was still in office?
Get the Oligarchs, you get Putin.
as long as its not getting "nukes" and "ww3" trending on twitter and blocking any actual info
Absolutely
How so
Trump was trigger happy
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Trump is on Russias side
Trump admired Putin
Correct
So the US wouldn't be doing anything at best and would be helping Russia take over Ukraine at worst
The man's crazy tbh
I heard that Trump tried to tie this into the 2020 election somehow on Fox News, but they cut him off
Oh my god
in fact Trump was describing Putin as 'savvy' in response to Putin recognising the republics of Luhansk and Donetsk
"i know putin 👌 I know him very well. Hes a lovely man 👌 he is excellent at making coffee."
no, americans want a war, he, and every other president would be pushing to help Ukraine
No Abramovich, Alisher Usmanov or Leonid Mikhelson. none of the above are even amongst the top 20
pushing to further provoke Russia
whatever Trump meant by that who knows
if he tried to get finland that would escalate to nuclear war
Huh???? Is there context I missed
it would literally be suicide
Well that's nice
lmao
Nuclear war is seriously not a realistic problem because it would mean the end of humanity
isn't finland usually pro-russia?
No one is dumb enough to engage in it
wat
no, very much not so
nope
oh wtf
finland is about as anti-russia as you get
that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard bro
soviets invaded them in 1939 (the winter war)
america thrives on proxy wars, idk if theyd want to start a direct war with russia
There's no doubt that the MAD doctrine is still in effect
the finns sided with the nazis to fight the soviets in 1941 during the finnish continuation war
No
then proceeded to not join nato not out of wanting to side, but to avoid angering stalin
I can't imagine it escalating that far even if they did try to go further tbh. Conventional warfare can still exist in a nato country.
it's only use is to scare of others of using it, which they won't because they are too scared to use them
As far as i know, MAD will never not be in effect
90% of the time nuclear war has come close due to mistakes and misunderstandings, not due to agression.
MAD is definitely in effect
Precisely
If Russia invade Finland, they'll get flashbacks to Simo Haya
Exactly. The amount of times it came down to one person is astounding and frightening. Ever hear about the Soviet submarine officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis?
Yep
yup, unless putin and every other official feels suicidal and psychopathic all at once, then no one will want to start launching nukes
Petrov I believe?
Yup
Shit like that is what keeps me up at night
🥲🥲🥲🙏
putins gonna have a heated gamer moment and accidentally release a nuke
It's gonna be a game of DEFCON
scariest game on the planet
No one wins
Everyone dies
Haven't played it yet is it really anxiety inducing?
What? Why smily tears?
those screaming russian kid videos but also with nukes
Here's your friendly reminder to watch WarGames again
Good film
Putin releases nukes because his minecraft house got blown up
Who knew that Ferris Bueller almost started WWIII
Quite
okay i apologize for being stupid but i thought that russia and finland shared military training or something
Oh that's the closest crying emoji I have....I only use it for sad times sorry for misunderstanding
@azure plover Belarus my dude
bro it was hilarious nearly spat out my drink
Finland was the Soviets' Vietnam before Afghanistan (and Vietnam, I guess)
Kazakhstan is the other country in Russia's CSFO sphere
this is what "cyber warfare" means, destroying each others minecraft worlds
There's really eerie music, and you win points by the number of civilian casualties you inflict. It's a demonstration of what a Nuclear War would be like
DEFCON is bloody scary
Don't apologize my friend, you didn't know but now you do!
I'm glad you asked because I also didn't know
😵💫
or trade!! or something!!! i swear i'm not going insane
there's something that they do together
i doubt finland would ever take russias side given their history lmao
with the USSR at least
What about the former-Soviet-member states in the Caucasus mountains?
(On another note it makes sense. The Baikonur cosmodrome is located in the Kazak steppes)
someone know whats going on in bulgaria?
bulgaria?
If anyone is unsure about how devastating a nuclear war would be, or is just interested, search up DEFCON on youtube
It's genuinely terrifying
yeah, bulgarian defense minister wouldn't want to call the situation in ukraine as a war
Only thing i found is they're welcoming Ukrainian immigrants
don't know how the newly elected administration is handling this
Yeah. Nations near there (Georgia, too)
I'm not that well versed in terms of relations between those nations and Russia. I do know that Turkey, which borders Georgia, is a NATO member state
And they control the Bosporus
And also controls the Bosporus (thanks HOI 4)
ngl hoi4 is bad
Bought it, still don't know how to play after 200 hours
I know how to play and have like 300 hours but it's so boring
Paradox interactive would like to know your location
Stellaris on the other hand is pretty fun
Real Chads like Age of Empires II
Ooph our air force base is buzzing
I just came back and it's all about games
Only with gamers, can you turn a thread about the first major war in Europe in nearly a hundred years into a discussion about strategy games
thought the same. but it was a nice distraction
Doesn't help that those strategy games were war games
You think Putin war-gamed his invasion with the Millennium Dawn mod in HOI4?
Should we keep it on topic or
Yeah
I'll keep it to #video-game-chat
Yes please keep it on topic thanks 🙏

Kiev will fall within 96 hours
I can really see a revolution happen against Putin
Source???
💪 solidarity
That would be ironic, seeing as how some scholars would argue that this war is meant to distract the Russian people from Russia's failures
could be if you soo how far they are in already
Russia has captured an island in the black sea
source of the map?
BBC just announced
Idk if that map is accurate
Growing increasingly close to Turkey with that island in the black sea
I don't think Russia took that entire island
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014
I have been proven wrong
Said when
map from DRM Journal
Ah ok
Huh are they that increasingly close to Kyiv??
seem so
I don't mean Crimea BBC just announced it was a small island
That's slightly more concerning
but the map is also 2h old
its nice to see them be able to push back, but Russia is not gonna risk looking weak against Ukraine, even if it costs them a lot of a military power tbh
Only way I see Ukraine winning, is either through NATO intervention, or an Afghanistan-like insurgency with the backing of NATO
That coupled with heavy sanctions against Russia and its Oligarchs
well rip
paratroopers are useless if the main army cannot relieve them
This statement was not so good to say the least
CNN's John Berman talks to Gloria Borger and Maggie Haberman about recent reaction from prominent members of the Republican party to Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggressive moves in Ukraine, and President Biden's response to it. #CNN #News
they can only carry so much of everything
Jesus Christ
I’m done with trump at this point
it would be insanely embarrassing for Russia to pull this and not be able to take ukraine
At this point it can be easy to argue that Trump was Putin's puppet, whether it be literally or metaphorically
saw this earlier today and this will stick with me forever. Can't imagine what those people are going through
finland ussr
o7
Have you seen what Tucker Carlson has been saying about Russia? He makes Fox News look like they're under Russia's control
ok but everyone was distracted by WW2 right?
China: "Stop using the word invasion, we are not calling it an invasion, that's only in the West" HUH????

I guess
it would be even worse if it happened here lmao
It's an invasion by definition lmao
Like China, what are you doing with that statement
I got a lot more juicy leaks
China is trying to balance their relations between them-and-Russian, and them-and-the US (as strained as those are)
Anyone else afraid about china using this as a distraction to get taiwan?
everyones eyes are on russia rn, if they arent able to take ukraine then thats the equivalent of pissing yourself in front of an audience to them
And then we get a Pacific Theatre once again
Relations between China and Russia haven't been that good since the Sino-Soviet Split, but they're not enemies. More like "friends with benefits" than actual friends
I'm screaming https://twitter.com/Reuters/status/1496941831824760836
Russia should not be cut off from SWIFT at the moment - Germany's Scholz https://t.co/2sJiXQARJ7 https://t.co/DvP5K8zocg
Alright y'all I'm tapping out for now. Going to try and do some homework as a distraction.
Keep me posted as things progress. I'll check in later.
I love y'all, stay safe, remember to take breaks from the news and drink water!
News are saying it's an "Entante" atm
They are using it
Why not?????????????
At that point the US will get involved
They've done everything to show their support for Taiwan except say it out loud
We will get involved eventually, I’m already packed up ready to head out in the near future
for certain?
Had to do paperwork most of the day day in the event I die
where are you?
Still in the US
I live in a major US city for school. I don't give a damn if classes will still be in person, my bachelor's won't be worth the risk of nuclear annihilation
Thats the island I'm talking about
Smarter man than me, gave up on college and joined the army, thought that since we are getting out of afghan then it would be much safer if a career
Political classes in all Universities are gonna be WILD
As much as I want to see Putin fail and get his ass handed to him, I'm more worried about what would happen if NATO gets directly involved
I had a political science class last semester. It was online, but the discussions were in person
That is literally a world war, that's why we are hoping Ukraine can hold out
Ukraine already captured some Russian PoWs
still don't think there will be any nato involvement unless article 4 is invoked
NATO will wipe the floor with Russia, I have no doubt in my mind that the outcome can be anything less than victory, it changes if Putin hits that big red button
The only time Article 5 was invoked is when 9/11 happened
Article 5?
how is it a world war when only 2 countries are at war?
I could've mistakened it for Article 4; basically "An attack against a member state is an attack against all member states."
Well if Ukraine appeals to the United Nations for aid, then can’t a nato member and eventually the rest of nato join?
It would be a World War if NATO got involved
4 is threats against member states, 5 is explicit attacks
no. Nato wouldn't join
NATO is defensive
That'll be difficult, seeing as how Russia (and China) is a permanent member of the UN security council
They have full veto powers
But isn’t Russia involving any itself because Donbas appealed to the UN for intervention?
I could be mistaken though
I remember Putin’s speech mentioning that
No
Hostomel airfield now finally back under controll
Fuck geopolitics. I just wanna vibe
I'm feeling really fucking stressed with the entire Russia and Ukraine situation
Starts in ten minutes (White House Press Briefing)
This whole thing is stressful because I'm scared of nuclear warfare
Pretty much everyone
You forget how fucking stupid Putin is
He's violent, not moronic
There's a difference
If putin was dumb enough to engage in nuclear war, he would have by now
But he will if NATO gets involved and pushes his forces back
he is a horrable despicable evil man, but he's not stupid by any means
If NATO gets involved is what I was responding to
Likely an empty threat because again, it's suicidal
https://twitter.com/KyivPost/status/1496941052074201090
Second times the charm.... right guys?
Hostomel airfield was repulsed by Ukrainian forces.
This time for sure! https://t.co/vnBpMKQaqU
Let's hope
Okay Uhm, the News seems to be just repeating....is everyone like asleep? Like what time is it?
Hopefully its true, but fuck knows if it is
If nuclear warfare happens, it'll be the end of us all
im ready
So i don't even know whats happening, I just joined on today and apparently the world has gone to shit?
Why can't the world just get along
Probably not all of us, South America would be looking a lot nicer
Yes
yes
Russia declared war on ukraine
have you not been watching the news
Exactly our reaction
NO
Ukraine is struggling a bit it seems
Why what
why was war declared?
Because
because
Russia wants Ukraine to be annexed
Because
Don't know what else to say
Tensions were high
Putin wants to expand Russia's borders
;-;
Because Russia claimed that ukraine was genociding the people of separatist ukraine and chose to intervene as part of the UN Security Council
I personally think it's unlikely, as MAD held out and the Cold War ended. I do think, however, that everyone has that fear itching at the back of their head. Just because it's suicidal, doesn't mean it's off the table. In fact, that may be the reason why it'll be on the table.
@cobalt agate Putin plans to overthrow the Ukrainian government and establish a puppet regime
Is Europe sleeping atm (I mean by time)
They should be nearing bedtime
yes
No wonder why the news is basically looping
It’s like 10 pm for them
It's around 10 PM in stockholm, Sweden
Sweden gang
^
I hope nobody resorts to using nuclear weapons, that would be disasterous

extremely unlikely
MAD would trigger so yeah
Hopefully Russia doesn’t go full belka and start throwing nukes everywhere
nothing for Putin to gain from nuking a country he's invading
Chances are nobody will use nukes (we survived the Cold War), but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility
<<a nuclear border>>
not much point conquering irradiated rubble
As long as NATO doesn't get directly involved, nukes won't be involved
You know mato everyone else is giving me actual reasons and you keep saying that this is to gather more land and I don't think that is the case.
NATO cant get directly involved, NATO is a purely defensive alliance they can not attack if not attacked themselves
that's how Putin thinks
It technically is, they have recognized the separatist ukraine which is Russian backed, and they recognize them as nearly half of Ukraine
the 'reasons' for invading Ukraine are justifications not the actual reasons
yeah id rather listen to the others mato.
There are natural resources in Ukraine that could be seen as the reason (coal in Donbas) and getting more of Ukraine's area would mean getting more ports along the Black Sea which is important strategically. But there are also the other political reasons Putin does what he does
the purpose of the russian attack is twofold, take the land the selfdeclared republics lay claim on and overthrow the current Ukrainian government to install a pro-russian government
bingo
there is a third bonus objective, Ukraine is europes main producer of grain wheat and barley
need that barley for beer
i'm just here trying to focus on classwork and finally enjoy lengends of arceus and now I'm stressed out cause a war is happening
Yes, I think they supply Middle-East with a lot of grain. This is going to hit them as well through that
Not just the middle east, Ukraine is the 2nd largest grain exporter in the world after the US
⚡️Now for sure: Ukraine reclaims the Hostomel Airport near Kyiv from Russia's forces.
Sources: Deputy Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko; Ukrainian parliament's Telegram channel.

#Ukraine 🇺🇦: multiple reports of renewed fighting in #Sumy tonight. If true it would mean the Ukrainians are conducting a counter-attack. https://t.co/MZJQafOJNi
Sorry not Middle-East , Egypt and other North African countries. My mistake
if russia manages to take control over that grain supply they can make Europe even more dependant on keeping good relations like they have already attempted with the natural gas supplies
Mariopol being Bombarded atm
i'm pretty sure Europe isn't that reliant on food exports from Ukraine
I see there is now a thread for this, am very glad
i'm just stressed
Don't stress over it for the time being
If Ukraine completely falls and NATO is attacked then stress....but now hope and pray
i'm a little stressed over it cause my partner currently lives in Poland and, while it is unlikely for Russia to attack a NATO member any time soon it is a very real possibility they might get drafted into the polish army and be at risk
Poland still has laws for forced draft
do they have any factors that could disqualify them from the draft?
According to Politico, Ukraine is EU's fourtg biggest external food supplier...provides about a quarter of cereal and vegetable oil imports and almost half if its corn. So it will hit, and with food prices already in a rise... well, it wont be nice.
Unfortunately not, we are looking into getting them to move in with me in the Netherlands as soon as possible now
ah, well good luck getting them to NL
Wish you the best with that
But NL is NATO too no?
NL doesnt have a forced draft
I don't think NL has a draft
What’s NL
Netherlands
Ah
Okay the news is just looping I'm gonna stop watching
least we have the luck of both countries being EU so the immigration process should be relatively smooth, mostly just a matter of saving up enough money for the trip and living expenses for while they find a job here
hope things will calm down over night
But yeah i mostly came here to share the speech from the ukrainian pres but saw it was already posted a couple of times
and the news seems to have indeed slowed down and be looping at this point
also can i say it's incredibly awesome this server is providing a place for people to discuss the situation? a lot of other servers i am in have a hard no politics of any kind rule and are shutting down any talk about it
Usually when politics are discussed, things get, well... political (i.e. hands get thrown). But in this situation, most, if not all people are united with the idea of standing with Ukraine against Russian aggression. That and people are afraid of war
Probably because of nukes
We as a mod team have realized that this is a very important topic, and is something that we decided that these convos where going to happen here no matter what. So instead of doing something like shutting down multiple convos about it, we push it to a localized spot.
The russians are now in Nikolaev
The Armed Forces of Ukraine see Chechens and Grushniki everywhere, who have laid land mines on the road and are waiting for them to blow up a lonely BMP as soon as possible, and cut off the heads of the survivors.
That seems a bit harsh
This is what the Russians are doing now
Ahh
any source?
Comes from Ukrainian soldiers
nice
@solid adder wait where are you from
sweden
ah
Any idea why NATO isn't creating a no-fly-zone?
Other than "NATO doesn't want to be directly involved"
To scared probably
They may not have the authority to do that over a country that isn't part of them
there practically already is one
I guess I can reframe it as "an official no-fly-zone"
🇺🇦🇲🇩🇮🇱 At this moment Ukrainian Atsaly volunteers are sending another bus with Israelis from Uman towards the border with Moldova.
Just came in
Shout out to the mods for this
Just wanna say thanks for actually allowing this
I was wrong earlier concerning the timing of the White House Press Briefing. It actually starts in ten minutes.
Cool
Cool
Sanctions are not gonna help
They will if they are strong enough to economically starve Russia
They still have china and North Korea on their back
and when i say fecked I mean Over 45% stock market drop
Targeting the Oligarchs and their off shore accounts will fuck them over
what about nk? starving farming nation?
NK can't really do anything but yeah concerned about China being able to soften the impacts of the sanctions
North Korea is reliant on China, and if Russia crashes China will carry the weight of both
Their nukes
nukes are not an issue here
The costs of which will be far higher because war is expensive
5 mins till conference
Do u guys think because Putin has been extremely isolate from Covid. If he got it he could be hurt assuming he doesn’t have the vaccine
this is a bit of a sus question
I don't think it's that psychological
Ukraine and Russian tensions have been high for ages
Nah I just mean in general
Putin just took drastic action recently
Like if he got Covid would he die
no??
Uh
I can just predict the man's death
Covid has a pretty low death rate though
So it's not likely he would die
Covid laced with other
Uh
"Citing martial law signed by Zelensky today, Ukraine's Interior Ministry says the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine is prohibiting men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country."
Daaaaamn
"How to say you're implementing a draft without saying you're implementing a draft."
Hopefully press briefing isn't late
Today, I asked a Russian diplomat how he was doing.
"I don't know how to respond to this question," he texted back. "I am disgusted with myself, I am sick with myself. I am ashamed that we all partially let this happen... We all lied... How can there be forgiveness for us?"

Damn
No one really wanted war, only Putin and his cronies wanted war.
apparently this is also happening: https://twitter.com/ABarbashin/status/1496945849359814656
The Union of the Committees of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia, Russia's oldest NGO in the field reports draftees being forced to sign contracts and shipped off to the border with Ukraine

This isn't Russia's war, it's Putin's war
Just look at all the protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
One War hurts economic global prosperity so there's that
Why fight
When you can trade
young conscripts beeing pressured to sign in as contract soldiers
We aren't psychologists
like all out war far
probably not, Putin has already removed non-loyalists
If the Oligarchs begin to feel the economic pressure
Since Putin is practically so isolated that he's only taking bad advice if say no
Putin has the same iron-grip as Stalin did
Idk nothin about the factional conflict in the inner circle of russia so not sure
its quite a facisnating subject of discussion
I hope Ukraine descends into insurgency, get bogged down in a 20 year war
I don’t think the oligarchs are too happy with what‘s going on
all the sergeis are upset
i heard someone in another server say US intelligence should try "leaking" past assassination attempts on putin to try to make him feel paranoid and maybe get him to start executing his upper guys
It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when
No one is really happy about the war apart from the people who started it
the oligarchs don't need to be happy, they just need to be fearful of the consequences of plotting against Putin
no thats an awful idea
i feel like that would make putin mad at the US and go at them
cause there exposing his flaws
Well, tell that to Margarita Simonjan
Idk who that is
She runs Russia Today
they could make it look like it came from someone within russia or something, US intelligence has really stepped it up these past few months
Ah ok
And frequently appears on Russian TV as a high-profile guest
ye, but i see that as an easy backfire
That would be insane
That would create more instability
^^
So the Press Briefing hasn't started yet... Just gonna apologize for continuously getting the timing of it wrong
it's pretty clear this isn't stopping until we make putin uncomfortable
bruh this is just… is the official Ukraine account really shitposting on Twitter…
yes
And either way, US intelligence has quite a bad track record when it comes to assassinations and the like
Think it just comes off that way. Sentiment was to get people talking about what's up. Bit of a boomer moment but good sentiment
i'm not saying assassinate him, i'm saying make him paranoid with reports of past failed attempts
Yeah, but I think the very idea of that is wrong
he's already a pretty isolated person
The issue with that it may lead to him more brash and dangerous actions for the world
i dont think making him uncomfortable stops him
^^
Just look at how many times the CIA tried to off Castro
I think itll need a more physical stop
It might just make him more aggressive
What if leads to him thinking he has nothing to lose and goes all out
Don’t forget about the various South American dictatorships too
The official Ukraine acccount does that a lot, posting "non serious" tweets and kinda memey posts.
I think the problem with this is the If varable he could do a million different things
The most dangerous person is someone with nothing to lose
I'm not a big Cold War nerd, but I can't recall a single time in which the US did a successful assassination (though, wouldn't it be best if the successful assassinations were kept secret?????)
and because of that factor I think most people would be out because its an IF factor you cant tell. Its also a pretty big deal so id think of it as a last resort option
Definitely true, but it’s still odd considering literally everyone is talking about it. Sentiment is great it’s just an odd time and place for that
Hmmm the press briefing seems to be late
Here are some successful ones
to clarify, when i was talking about assassination attempts, i meant failed ones by russians, not the west. there's at least a few afaik, probably more we don't know about
not sure it could work with the tech now
They offed Che Guevara?
Not included is lmumba
due to his death the crisis in the congo happened
ukraine account is always on fire reagarding memes and shitposts
I have to get back to my history paper
A Bolivian firing squad did, but it was directly assisted and paid for by the CIA
Ohh, thanks for pointing that out
ah so they just fund
Patrice Émery Lumumba (; alternatively styled Patrice Hemery Lumumba; 2 July 1925 – 17 January 1961) was a Congolese politician and independence leader who served as the first prime minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo) from June until September 1960. He played a significant role in the transfo...
Now I'm thinking how much future students have to research about of events in that happen in the span of 3 years
Idk much about everything that’s going on just yet but I hope all you in the affected areas are safe
yes, shall be quite an interesting college expierence
The good news is that the air assault on Kyiv seems to have been halted for now
My soul hurts reading all of this...
Though ground forces could still get there in a day
Aw, maybe try to take a break to distract yourself?
That's what I've been doing all day. I've skimmed this thread in ~5 minutes.
Not directly related to the conflict, but I just want to share the absolute beauty of the Ukrainian national anthem https://youtu.be/xDeQVaoTvJM
My channel is dedicated to anthems, hymns and patriotic songs, here is the link to our discord server: https://discord.gg/Vw5SgNDuVV
do you think russia will try and cut off exits of places trying to prevent any flanks and ultimately cornering people in
Yeah, that‘s good. This thread is all over the place sometimes, so I can imagine it’s a bit overwhelming, if you want a concise summary, the NYT and The Guardian have them
no
oh
Wouldn't that just be a war crime at that point
what
no
This war is already a war crime
no
Like Putin is above that shit.
If anything Russia would allow those who want to leave to leave
I have to exit for a bit to continue my history apper
good luck
less people to keep suppressed that way
Russia is no Stranger to Committing war crimes
just think of syrian hospitals
Hold on when is the press conference supposed to be???
ofc Putin would like to keep some of the more critical people like administrators, bureaucrats etc. if possible and wouldn't want to cause too much emigration.
Which press conference are you referring to?
actually wtf
Cause like it's been live for so long without starting
first nordstream and now this
i Am a james lol
pls Germany stop
nordstream was already a mess. But this is beyond
russia acc having the german govt in their back pocket rn like wtf
I’m so concerned about how this is going to go down
Oil Prices Are Stonks
Oil Prices went up as much as 60% today
scholz try to do fucking anything challenge impossible
It would've dealt proper damage to Russia as well 😦
it's all about gas and oil prices. Already higher than usual here. Germany is reliant on russian gas
He wants his rubles
nobody in germany is happy with him, at least from anyone i know
the helmets thing is a complete joke and if ukraine is defeated he played a role
Germany needs gas and oil, the problem is most of their fuel comes from Russia
not even the ones who voted for him. Even the green party is taking a tougher stand on russia than him
Is Scholtz from same party as Merkel was?
Ah. Thank you
I actually cannot believe someone thought that making their entire country dependent on Russia through Nordstream was a good idea
It's beyond me
Thankfully not a thing now but the fact it even happened
Germany should have not been paranoid with nuclear power
Can't they outsource from France anyway? They've got surplus I swear?
Merkel was as centrist as it gets
there is already nordstream 1, which has more than enough capacity
Bruh so it's still essentially an issue
If only there was A treaty That stopped world powers Using nuclear Weapons and nuclear WMDs
Doesnt a gasline go through Ukraine? And Nordstream was a threat to that, since Ukraine was paid for use of their land
northstream 1, yes, but ns2 wasn't supposed to replace this
your left is still our right
fair enough
Yes, but I think that the main issue is the two party system which necessarily polarises people
yesterday texas passed a bill that says that gender affirming medical care is child abuse
Oh yeah, i live in the us and it is really wacky
what does this This Icon mean I keep seeing it ?
Reports are coming in that the Russians took the Chernobyl Power Plant
People‘s political opinions are too different to fit them into a binary system
means “this is true” or “i agree with this”
Yes, that was like three hours ago
already hours ago
Really?
Yeah
Uhm this is not ontopic of the Ukrain Situation....it's becoming a bit too American Politics atm
Tank you
Shii, my news hella slow
Check The Guardian‘s live coverage
sorry
whats with the planes
The decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Germany was probably the worst political decision made by Germany in recent times
They‘re avoiding Ukrainian and southern Russian airspace
Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, killing dozens of soldiers and civilians as it pushed in from multiple directions. Over 17 of 24 oblasts were attacked, either being shelled, bombed, struck with missiles or invaded by ground forces. The following is a liveblog of the Russian attacks. 11:30 […]
I disagree
damn
I'm only partially informed sadly
To be perfectly honest, I was hoping that the end of the world would be more... spectacular? Like an asteroid smashing us and our planet into dust. Not some asshole with his finger on 'The Button' taking us all down with him. This is just depressing...
It's not the end of the world
Not yet
but the consequences of Germany being reliant on Russian fuel are severe
Sorry, I'm just stating how it feels things are progressing toward...
i get that this is an issue to some people. But this isn't an issue atm and probably won't ever be
Gas only makes up 16% of electricity generation, most of it used for heating which is the issue
don't get any of us wrong the Russo-Ukrainian war will be one of the worst events in our lifetime but it's not going to escalate beyond Ukraine in the shortterm
it's more a start of a second cold-war
I hope you're right...
increased military spending across Europe etc.
Oh yeah, there’s already thousands protesting in russia against the war as well
gas prices already went up by 100-140%. Imagine what would happen if germany would need to import gas via LNG's
Going forward there will be several crisis, another refugee crisis, which then brings more far-right sentiments etc, but we will most of us live
Well, there‘s enough gas for this winter
I wouldn't guarantee far-right sentiments will actualise from the upcoming Ukrainian migrant crisis
I don’t think the refugee crisis will be as pronounced this time in terms of far-right parties
I would predict some sympathy from Europeans
People don’t mind Ukrainians around here
and hence, less political opportunity to score points with anti-migrant rhetoric
^^
but take my views with a pinch of salt im british afterall
I'm back what have I missed?
@rare walrus i wish them well- but protesting in Russia is a risky business
when were you last here?
Uhhh few hours ago
not much
already more than 1700 people have been detained
got to love a police state eh?
Last I saw was... 4 hours ago
Yeah, theres been i think around a thousand confirmed arrests already? Im not too sure on that number but i wish all those protesting good luck on it
Is Putin basically Stalin II now?
close enough
Yep
The sanctions will hurt Russia
Putin isn't quite as paranoid or ruthless as Stalin, but still unhinged enough to unjustifiably declare war
The most important thing I think is that Gostomel has been recaptured
By?
By the Ukrainian national guard
Epic
Yep, that means no major air assault on Kyiv for now
They announced a general mobilization in ukraine
Pogging
The Russians forces are focussing on taking Kyiv by expanding towards the Ukrainian capital on both sides of the Dnieper
the paratroopers failed to secure the airport
preventing what could have been airdrops/reinforcements by plane right on the doorstep of Kyiv
I saw that the Ukrainian Twitter account has posted a satirical cartoon
they wan't to take out the administrative elite, so no way around kyiv
Ah sweet, was gostomel one of the original locations russia captured last night?
take out the capital the government goes into exile and the Russians can install a puppet government with some legitimacy
Yeah, they sent in 20 helicopters with paratroopers
I‘m not sure where the helicopters went
Ah i see
IIRC Ukraine claimed to have shot down one of them but idk about the rest
So they have got the airport back?
And supposedly the surviving Russian paratroopers fled into the forests
Yep
That's good to hear
also depending on where the military HQ/ news rooms HQ are Russians can take control of the media too and broadcast disinformation from Ukrainian channels * note this is a bit redundant in the social media age tho * and i'm assuming this is in Kyiv
That is indeed quite good to hear
Eh, they‘ve already got Rossija 24 for that
i'm probably wrong then
Alright well, ive gotta go for now, might join back later tho.
bb
YESSS
bb
The main thing they’re trying to do is claim that Ukrainian forces are surrendering to lower morale
Lemme check RT actually
disinformation campaigns are really powerful at demoralising an army
particularly when it comes to those with some Russian ancestry
I don’t know if you‘ve seen it but Latvia has this handy little booklet on what to do during a crisis
It’s called propaganda
And one of the main points there is that you should never believe any news of surrender
They've been shitposting about Russia on Twitter for a hot minute tbf
Like even back in Dec 2021
You know that speech by Charlie Chaplin as Hitler is now so so very relevant
Indeed it is.
Idk if it's insensitive or not to post the memes from the official Ukraine acc so I won't but
https://twitter.com/Ukraine/status/1481536598760173569 one of my favourite
Be assured they've been shitposting for a bit
The Cartoon in question was an attack on Putin's image comparing him, quite blatantly, to the infamous charismatic, yet tyrannical and genocidal expansionist Adolf Hitler - it was designed to not only undermine Russian disinformation of 'denazification of Ukraine' as a reason for war but also accuse Putin of hypocrisy.
@silk iron
I CANT
Pfffffft
From the official booklet
blimey
Yup
memes really are the next generation of political cartoons
Bit outdated now
They really really are lol
based
"living inside of Russia"
who doesn't love a sassy official account

Deadass we live in an age where a war can be going on and one teams side is shitposting on Twitter and doing “Twitter do your thing” tweets
Yes, I got that.

gostomel is an airbase ~20miles from Kyiv, russia was planning on landing heavy reinforcements there for a drive on the capital
it being retaken is extremely important
btw don't get too caught up worrying over history unfolding, things are catastrophic no doubt, but there are many ways in which the Russian invasion can still fail, even in the event Ukraine's government is toppled and puppeted.
Map of Russian military troop movements. Not entirely accurate or detailed, but still does really show how threatening Russia is to Ukraine https://www.gfsis.org/maps/russian-military-forces
The interactive map shows the following Russian military forces:
Land maneuver and artillery units;
Air bases;
Naval bases;
S-300 and S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, as well as other air defence forces that are not part of the land maneuver units;
Russian military bases and installations beyond Russia's borders, including those that...
the people are strong and will resist
https://liveuamap.com/ - This site is also extremely good for seeing a record of all reported attacks, bombings, speeches, sanctions ect.
The site appears to be currently down, its struggling extensively with load, just keep tryna refresh it

Yeah russia is putting them down extremely hard
And may distrub some viewers
FINALLY
2hrs later
"Today we're following through. We will impose sanctions on Russia's two largest financial institutions, spare bank and BTB which together hold more than half of the Russian banking systems assets over $750 billion dollars in total for VTB. We will freeze all of its assets touching the US financial system and prohibit US persons from doing any business with the bank. For spare bank. We will sever its access to the US financial system. We'll also freeze the assets of and prohibit any business dealings with three additional Russian banks with combined assets of over 70 billion dollars. We'll also restrict US investors from providing debt or equity financing for 13 of the most critical Russian state-owned enterprises, which combined have estimated assets nearing 1.5 trillion dollars. And finally, we'll also impose sanctions on the executives at the state on institutions as well as additional Russian elites who are complicit in Putin's kleptocracy and their family members. Those who've shared in the Kremlin's corrupt gains and stored their wealth in yachts and luxury condos and fancy cars will now share in the pain of these measures In terms of the financial impact as I"
Just in case anyone didn't follow that here it is written
That's the first part
Hopefully this will be enough to literally choke hold Russia into economically starving
yeah
The russian central bank is having to take massive measures trying to control the drop
and the costs are only gonna start hitting harder and harder
1 ruble is now 0.012 US
10 year it's also bad
So is the US basically saying they're just gonna let Russia take over??😭😭
"What do you mean you aren't storming moscow and partying like its 1991"
They are saying they won’t directly invade but will take measures to hurt the Russian economy
Yes but that's long term
Short term .....Russia just keeps moving into Ukrainian heartland
Bruh this guy really wants his questioned answered
Did you know that Rasputin's Frozen body is Hidden in a Secret room under the Kremlin
the white house press briefing is a shitshow lmao
Children trying to grab attention of the teacher 🤣
Damn these journalists 🤣🤣
"I know it's late but I'll get to many questions as I can."
Isn't it like, only 6 PM there?
Yup 🤣
