This is Mariyanka, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine
Russia tries to occupy the city since March 2022. Being unable to break through Ukrainian defense, the Russian army razed the city to the ground with artillery fire and airstrikes.

Hi
Very cool it won't embed a tweet of portraits of passed American heroes that fought for Ukraine
An interesting dialog that shows the current mood of Russian propagandists:
- If Ukraine now launches their vaunted drone, and it flies towards the capital of our country. What will our response be?
- Well, there will be none.
We asked people in the streets of Kyiv:
Do you remember 24 February, beginning of the huge war?
Did you think it was even possible?
Listen to their responses
I forgive young people, who fall for such stupid ideologies, but seeing these grown-ass adults waving their stupid little hammer and sickle flags and harassing victims of genocide is just beyond pathetic. Shame that such people aren't ridiculed more.

Communist protesters attack Ukrainian refugees in Paris.
In the past, Putin has made promises not to occupy Crimea, not to violate Minsk agreements, not to invade Ukraine, yet he has done all of these things. Do not be fooled: he is an expert liar. Every time he has promised not to do something, it has been exactly part of his plan.

For context this is an opinion piece from Andrew Marr for the Statesman a centre-left political magazine in the UK.
Marr expresses doubts over either the Kremlin or Kyiv achieving a clean victory, but paraphrases Oleksiy Danilov (Ukrainian security adviser) that any form of partition like that of Korea during the Korean War, would only temporarily satiate Putin's ambitions (akin to Chamberlains appeasement of the Third Reich in partitioning Czechoslovakia During the 1938 Munich conference) and would have dire consequences for both Zelensky's government and the Ukrainian state's future.
However Marr goes onto state that the British government and public are overly optimistic about the length of the Ukrainian War and the future of the British economy and World economy - (one can infer this implies the British public and the world as a whole may become more self-centred and less interested in Ukraine repelling the Invaders overtime, so long as their living standards remain lower for multiple years).
The later part of the the video is highlighting the weakened state of the British armed forces on the international stage, due to long term underfunding (which is unlikely to change due to current state of the British economy). This will likely mean less valuable military support from Britain in the long-term as well.

New Statesman political editor Andrew Marr explains why the war in Ukraine will go on for years and what the consequences this will bring for Britain.

I personally found Marr's outlook to be a bit overly pessimistic, but it is generally true the longer the War lasts the less interested the publics of countries fairly distant to the Ukrainian War will become.

I haven’t watched the video yet, but I think any sort of partition would result in a rather unstable geopolitical situation overall and a heavy militarisation across Europe
I don’t think that reordering the entire economy and having to choose between defense and funding for other things is likely though
There‘s enough of a split as-is between western and northern/eastern Europe when it comes to the war

yeah, this development is just oof
also hell yeah I could understand maybe half thanks to knowing Russian/Ukrainian
You know Ukrainian too?
Kinda, it's similar to Russian so it's easier to understand, plus I was there many times
I try to use an analogy for my friends of like… different Romance languages
I have a friend who is fluent in Spanish and I described it to her like that
Like “try understanding Portuguese or Italian”
I kind of wish I could visit my parents’ hometown in Russia
If it wasn’t such a hellscape politically
Maybe one day
They’re from the Rostov area
I'd like to visit my grandma's hometown that's on the far side of current Russia
My Russian is honestly not good enough to get around in Russia lmao
My dad liked to shoe where distant relatives are, mainly around central Russia which is just the western part around Moscow
My dad knows Ukrainian too
God what an empire
I can teach u
When we were watching Zelensky’s New Year broadcast it was weird
My dad was translating from Ukrainian into Russian, but my gf, who only speaks English, was also there, so I was translating from Russian to English for her

My grandmother used to teach me but her health has gotten too bad, dementia
I know what it's like too well
I don’t know what it is actually called in Eastern Europe but she was a teacher for small children (Kindergarten here, yes a German loan word I think)
So we have a bunch of old Russian children’s books
My grandma was a Russian grammar teacher when she lived in Khabarovsk
She used to watch the Russian news, started seeing stuff about the war, but still thought she was in Rostov, so she started asking my mom if we were stocked up on food, if we were ready to leave if we had to, etc.
God...
She moved here to live with us a few years ago
Actually got her US citizenship already
And here people are so distant from all of this
Idk what my grandma's views on the war was, other than she wanted it to end
Mostly distant from the propaganda
I often have to explain at least a bit why I am so invested in it
By the time the war started she couldn’t really understand it well
But I know she holds the general view of violence bad
My grandpa was a medic for the Soviets during the afghan war in the early 80s so her view on war was negative, cuz he saw some fucked up shit
I wonder how this war will affect the people coming back from it decades later
I still find it sad that my grandpa is on the Russian side when the front lines are like 100km from his birth village
My dad was conscripted into the Soviet Army in the mid 80s
He had friends that were sent to Afghanistan
He was not sent there, and he wasn’t combat infantry
But he still dealt with some fucked up shit
One story he told makes me think he narrowly avoided being sent to help with the cleanup at Chernobyl
Yes my parents are decently old
That time was really hard for us
Things are still not great, seeing a loved one go through that is really hard and I wish nobody here has to
Yea, my boyfriends mother is Ukrainian and I see her watch the news very often
I used to worry she watches too much news but if it was my home town I’d be worried too
Really puts it into perspective
There’s nothing I want more than the war to end and my bf to see his family; he’s never been to Ukraine and it crushes me think he might never get the chance
I’ve signed up for a language course to prepare, it’s good to keep some optimism
Whats this about claim of russia attempting to coup moldova after their pm resigned?
Better them than the ukranians
Do we know any numbers on the Ukrainian attrition?
I think I read that US intelligence puts Ukrainian losses at over 100k too
But it's unverifiable as the Russians are untrustworthy and the Ukrainians are quiet too for morale
Oh yeah but it's sadly to be expected as a defensive force

U.S. President Joe Biden promised new military aid for Ukraine worth $500 million during a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday, almost a year to the day since Russia's invasion.
Besides from the symbolic importance of Biden visiting Kyiv during Wartime, $500mil new military aid is also being sent to Ukraine.
No mention of fighter jets yet however, which is what Zelensky was pushing for.
China's top diplomat is due to visit Moscow shortly, and may possibly even meet President Vladimir Putin, as the United States says it is concerned Beijing may be considering supplying weapons to Russia.
In less positive news tensions have increased between China and the US after the US shot down multiple Chinese ""weather balloons"" flying over Canadian and American territory. China seemingly in response has offered military aid to Russia, which as brought Sino-American relations to a new low in recent times. It'll be interesting to see what comes of the talks between Russian and Chinese diplomats, hopefully just empty promises.
In my view it's in the best interests of the US and Ukraine to keep China as neutral as possible, maybe offering them the opportunity at the peace broker table if that keeps them from any form of intervention in the Russo-Ukrainian war (whether that's a morally justifiable position I'm not sure). However it seems to be in China's interests to let the Russians and 'the West' fight amongst themselves.
Noting says "Putin has already lost' like Biden surprise visiting Kyiv in the midst of a fucking major offensive

You didn’t miss anything, it was boring as hell

So can we make some kind if toust to one year of succesfull western but most importantly ukranian resistence to Russian expansion and colonialism
I now its wierd celebrating it but come on
I was on a buss going to Italy when the invasion was picking up i think it was day 5 or somting the anonymus atacks happend while we where driving true Germany was kinda cool watching it play out even with bad data conections
Whearing masks was still very much a ting for me last year crazy what all happend in 1year
I personally will only celebrate once Russia loses
and will support until then
man I remember when the attacks started, while working
I felt depressive especially thinking about my Ukrainian coworkers
I saw r/Russia get quarantened minuts after the mods pinned a post about Putin reconising the donbas republics
It was kinda wild seeing it happen so fast on a nutoriosly slow website
I made a presentation about the news two weeks before the invasion where i had one slide about the "milletary exercise at the ukranian border" and where after i put the facts in order i said i tought Puting wouldent be stupid ebough to begin a war in Europe
I got dead glares from the one 1/4th Russian girl in my class for the rest of the day
my workplace did a winter event in ukraine, few days before the war
I still think what if the war started a few days earlier
Dam
and I was actually nervous about the start a few months back, my boss was like "dont worry it wont happen" but I was still kept with the news
the signs were there
lots of people didn't believe a war would start
Btw the 1/4th russian girl and me got into a bunch of arguments for the rest of the year cuz she would terorise me with pro putin shit all year cuz she new i hated the far right
damn
We still go to the same school school. I ignore her like the grave to save both of us from the reputation
yeah
I get internally angry when I see ignorant people about the war, but I try not to engage with them
I would just lose
I am terrible at making arguments lol
Oh i got bullied by her and her friends for the rest of the year cuz they new exactly how to triger my anger and anxiety i finely shamed her friends into being normal humans do
(i mentaly colapsed in class after 2 hours of bullyng all fingers got pointed to them)
at least you can ask them how the russian army is doing lol
the was/were army
"hows the losing side huh?"
Oh how i wiched i could do that but again ignoring her like the grave
yeah it's best to ignore
Both of us do better that way
at least that's how I do with people who are just tiring to talk with
Ight im gonna sleep now early day tomorrow
Long live Ukranian resolve
alright cya, slava Ukraini
This is not the smartest statement to make right now in my opinion as it is exactly what Russia is looking for in regards to justification for either an Overthrow of the Moldovan Government or some kind a Military Intervention in Moldova.
Why does he want to go to war with moldova when ukraine has gone poorly
I'm never going to forget when I was watching videos live of the first explosions in Kyiv

anniversary losses per ZSU https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1629061179246010369?s=20
This is an absurd amount
Like, that amount of personnel could staff a couple divisions
started off with 190k around the border, then thrusted in more divisions from around the country, then had a mass mobilisation of 300k people, a 2nd wave added 200k more, and there's apparently a covert mobilisation
example is this thread, though seems they failed to bring in these future officers
147k losses is already more than any other war fought in the last 40 years
The mass conscriptions aren’t going to lessen the rate of losses
especially when the conscripts are poorly trained and equipped
Equipment is the big problem here
They can’t send stuff in time
Russian logistics is more corrupt than even their training
throwback to the first mobilisation and there being a flood of videos of drunk people at the conscription offices and in barracks
A year ago I was in the mindset that Russia could competently field an army that could provide a challenge to nato
I didn’t believe they could win a conventional war, but it wouldn’t have been easy
a year ago Russian propaganda constantly fear mongered invading the Baltic states too, and I was worried about that especially after the Invasion
I’m pretty certain Poland alone could’ve steamrolled them
but now they've sent like 50% of their stationed forces in Kaliningrad to die in Ukraine
good shit I'm safe
Barring nukes ofc
Definitely a big loss in offensive capacity
Not that they would’ve gone far with Poland being there
especially not when Poland went on a shopping spree last week, buying 100s of tanks, fighter jets, MLRS from US and South Korea
Poland is like that guy in a cartoon that gets held back yelling “lemme at em!”
insert demonic Wojack titled Poland, pointing at a big red button titled "Article 5"
I remember getting that on my twitter timeline some odd 8 months ago
especially when a missile landed in their border
I remember that
If Russia didn’t have their nukes that would’ve been a formal declaration of war
Nukes are both good and bad things
Mostly bad
I've read that Russia recently tested out an ICBM but that failed spectacularly
Even if 90% of their icbms fail to reach their targets, they’d still have enough bombs to reduce earth to a frozen hellhole
I have no idea why anyone would ever need more than a hundred, let alone 7k
they don't
you don't really need more than 300 to utterly annihilate an enemy alliance
which is why China for example isn't growing their numbers much
that's just increased upkeep cost
lmao
i think thats the point
Ik this thread is about Ukraine, but what has China been doing
My knowledge is five months out of date
there were talks of China sending arms to Russia, but doesn't seem like that happened yet, no Chinese things found on the battlefield, other than consumer drones lol
Drones are also a fascinating subject
This war is like a modern version of the Russo-Japanese war, but with ground armies
they were truly revolutionised during this war, so I expect we see them more in future wars
even fucking drone on drone action
Footage spreading across the internet today shows what appears to be a Ukrainian Mavic drone in airborne warfare against one of its Russian counterparts, in what some are suggesting is the first documented account of drone vs drone warfare ever.
The footage, captured by the Ukrainian drone, shows a Russian drone flying up towards it, before app...
and its just consumer grade drones too wtf
What are they doing there
That’s certainly one way of disabling a drone
These drones are really cheap right, and I’ve heard of people strapping bombs to them and raining down grenades over enemy positions
How could anyone counter that
yes
shoot them down with RPGs or just an entire mag or 5
we see footage of them high enough that they can't be heard, but will probably be seen if your vision isn't of a 80 year old
there are also specific weapons used to disable drones or at least disconnect them from the controllers, saw them being used against Iranian drones
Ukraine are basically the pioneers of drone warfare then
Win or lose they war, some of their tactics will definitely be integrated into nato armies
I still think it’s funny that it’s classified as a Ukrainian cultural sight
What a great submarine
https://twitter.com/KyryliukRoma/status/1629059421702586370?s=20 https://twitter.com/KyryliukRoma/status/1629059423564967936?s=20 https://twitter.com/KyryliukRoma/status/1629059425422942209?s=20

Ukrainian kids singing the national anthem in front of burned-out Russian tanks on the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
These people can’t be defeated.
very cool of them to just completely demolish that theatre after killing 100s in there
Remember, Russia totally definitively is not an empire
map of Russia, but i divided it randomly with absolutely no respect to cultural, religious, or political boundaries whatsoever
This is the real territory distribution of the Russian “federation” isn’t it
yes
I was referencing this meemee
oh yeah, I remember that a disproportional amount of dead mobilised men are from those non-Russian ethnic groups
Moskals on their way to run several ethnic cleansings all at once
This one hurts, as most of my family lives in Iraq

Britain basically caused all of Iraq’s problems
no thought was put into drawing Middle Eastern and African borders
It’s so painful, it’ll never disappear from the cultural mindset
For Russia, the Middle East, and Africa
Imperialism is inherently an evil form of oppression, it always destroys more than it builds
indeed
This last year has had a lot of introspection for me
yeah lots of world view changing events
I used to dislike my country and had a slightly negative view of Russia(ns), but after the war and seeing how both groups behaved, I now love Lithuania and despise Russia and dislike many Russians
I’m now a “radical” social democrat
my opinion on NATO did become a very little more positive, because we here need to be protected, but not as much as I expect now
I’ve always been pro EU, and I also support nato
I'll repeat today what I said one year ago as Russia invaded Ukraine.
A dictator bent on rebuilding an empire will never erase the people’s love of liberty.
Brutality will never grind down the will of the free.
And Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia. Never.

For a month, the people of 🇱🇹, a country of 2.8 million, have raised funds to buy Ukraine multifunctional tactical radars.
Today they're gifting 11 million EUR worth of radars to help 🇺🇦 protect its skies&fight for freedom.

- In a conversation, a Russian woman is livid as she cannot understand why civilians have to supply the Russian army with essentials.
- Russian soldier talks about a drone attack that devastated a T-90 tank, its turret went flying. Also mentions a commander who sent 120 people to sure death without adequate reconnaissance.
- Russian mobilised man talks about the relentless friendly fire from tanks, guns, and artillery. He believes the life of mobilised soldiers is worthless as they're not provided with any equipment.
That’s pretty nice
Is there any news on that counter attack near bahkmut or was that false rumours?
How many russian people need to die and continue to die until people do something
At least 149240 Russian soldiers.
But I honestly dont think its as easy as 'enough people have to die before people take action' in a pretty authoritarian country like Russia. You can just ship anyone who disagrees off to who knows where
You cant ship everyobe
Not if everyone rises up no, but good luck getting everyone to do so when they're already beaten down
But if you ruthless enough with the ones you do, most people would be too scared anyway.
By this point people can get large fines for something as simple as making vague anti-war or pro Ukrainian posts on their social media accounts.
Police is posted in city' centers after every major event or announcement.
Every bit of independent anti-war mass media is banned.
Propaganda works 24/7, if not convince in necessity of this war, than to create so much informational noise that you wouldn't know what to think about it.
How many soldiers died in this war? 50-150 thousands out of 140+ million Russian citizens is not a lot.
Otherwise prices have gone up, some comfots disappeared, but it was slowly happening for the last decade anyway, so nothing dire enough to create spontaneous emotional mass protest around.
I don't think much will happen on this front until russian economy will completely slide into shit.

A bizarre thread on how a standoff on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border turned into a full-scale "billboard war" in just one week. It started on 8 March when Ukrainian soldiers guarding the border with Belarus put up billboards reading "Occupiers have no place on Ukrainian soil" 1/

Say you are petty without being petty
This is hilarious
Ukraine did started it but ngl they were quite chill about it compared to Belarus who seems to be going full nuts lmao
Ukraine wanted to de-escalate or more like sending a message "hey please leave us alone, thank you" while Belarus really wants it to escalate
Now I'm curious what more will happen in the billboard war lol
Ukrainians should just put up a giant picture of someone from the Belarus opposition with no elaboration
that should trigger Luka

It's interesting to see the measurable impact of the invasion on Ukrainian culture
The percentage of ukrainians speaking russian at home went from 33% in 2021 to 23% now
Might be because of Ukraine not measuring the terrain where Russia took
Makes sense to me. I imagine there is probably a lot of social pressure to talk Ukrainian and even some distrust towards people speaking Russian.
Ngl I didn't think of that
Tbf your paid job problably isn't to work on stuff like that
I'd assume that people who esrn their living this way would not miss such a detail
uhm it was the russian jet that did the aggressive action, the drone was flying normally
Le joke goes woosh
oh
Its funny because the russians claimed the drone was aggressive
Can someone explain what is happening there?
they're just doing what their favourite WW2 hero said 🥰
Looks like a russin jet is trying i harass a US drone above ukrainian airpace but looks lime it miscalculated on the last fly-by and smacked into it
whats hilarious is that the US military also called the pilot unprofessional and an amateur (paraphrasing)
ah then that explains it
One important detail, it‘s not Ukrainian airspace but international airspace
Yea i heard it wrong
oh.. that is way worse than I thought
Yuuuup
Dunno if anyone mentioned it yet but the fuel dumping thing may have been an attempt to get fuel into the drone engine's intake and cause it to ignite
The phenomena in question
so basically they wanted to destroy a drone without using bullets or rockets
so that it somehow doesn't count
I do wonder though
Why was there an US drone there in the first place?
Feels weird that there was a drone in the midde of the sea
anyone knows why it was there or at least where it was going?
I mean they couldve just dumped petrol on it because they thought it was funny yk
You dont know with these things
yeah it is a bit of a mystery at this point
I doubt Russia would want to bully US with this
but at the same time who knows
for many months now, the US has been flying surveillance drones over the black sea to share intelligence with Kyiv about Russia's activities in the sea and Crimea, it's also a good warning system for when Russia plans to launch missile attacks on Ukraine
you can usually see one on flightradar24
ah I always thought they use one of the big airplanes for surveillance
there's one in the sky over Romania too
the drone is usually in the sky for 10s of hours at a time and I'm always impressed at how long it stays up there, usually comes out of Italy's Sicily
there are also other surveillance planes flying around east europe that share intel from Königsberg and Belarus
the one downed was a mq-9 reaper
it can stay up in the sky for 14 hours
oh wow they weight over 2000kg
it a big boi
I always thought they are like lightweight to be more efficient
one other US surveillance aircraft you could track over the Black Sea is the e-2c hawkeye, its got a funni dish on it's back
if russia were to ever down that, they'd have killed people
that's the one I heard about
