my theory is that now that we've killed Hydaleyn, the Mothercrystal and Zodiark, there is some 'flow of aether' between the stars that was essential to the survival of the shards that is now severed, presumably we use the Key and Azem's crytal to create a 'bridge' (very Bifrost inspired) that allows the aether to flow again, which conveniently also allows us, the bearer of Azem's power to travel between them as well

In the Sphene trial fight, when she tries to drain other shards her attacks first become earth-aspected, and then wind-aspected. In the EX version, she tries a third shard and gets ice-aspected attacks. So my guess is that the other remaining shards (8th & 11th?) are also at Flood of [ELEMENT] stage for earth and wind.
