the gem system makes it hard to experiment and try things

Don't worry about how slow or clunky the game feels until you get to Atlas and start getting everything together. That's whenever you can start to optimize that and even casual builds will be way way better than just campaign level stuff. If you're going flick strike especially that thing's just known for being a blaster
