If you've got an easy way to apply exposure or resistance reduction then dropping the penetration investment is probably worthwhile, yeah. Although it can depend how clunky it feels, too - penetration is "always on" whereas curses and exposure obviously require you to use more skills to apply them, so they might feel worse for that reason

Yeah, that fight is a nightmare for low-DPS. Well if you're cursing already then dropping the pen investment for %increased damage/attack speed/crit/whatever could help
That's the thing. I'm not cursing. I just got a lot of pen. But like half my points at this level went into getting it. I'm considering if somehow applying curse and spending those points into more damage elsewhere be better. I just really like this build for clear, but it's obvious it's not the best for bosses

Curses are very expensive, mana-wise, so they're not necessarily meant for melee builds, which is the issue. But it's certainly easier than spending half your passives on pen. You could always drop some pen and invest the points elsewhere
The exposure support gems exist also, but they're not great until the patch this week hits

Well, wand allows you to use off-hand focus as an extra stat stick. I don't think one is necessarily better, it will depend

How do you guys deal with survivability on ranger/dex characters?
Evasion doesnt help against slams and even with good elemental resistances and + max HP on my gear i end up getting oneshot by physical attacks. Should i just put some points into strength to get some armor on my gear?

Yes
It would help against slams (would also make stacking dodge a lot harder) but even with high evasion i get to roughly 87% dodge chance so if i get hit by a strong physical attack i still die 13% of the time.

Hello! Would anyone know if font of rage on Pain Offering will affect minions? The DPS meter doesnt increase over time so im not sure if the minions are getting affected by the rage build up

I use 3 heralds and spam storm wave for clear and ice strike/bell for bosses, but I'm super squishy. Also seems a bit meh
Unsocket it, then put back together. Then go outside the hub area, to some location. See if it works. I had this happen to my heralds. Try restarting from character screen
It usually happened to me if I temporarily didn't have enough spirit or stats to activate it, but then it doesn't realize you do again

should I even bother with trying to make a witch / bow build? It feels like going with anything but dips in sorceress is pointless (witch class as base), tried making a witch / monk hybrid but couldn't come up with anything that could probably be done better with sorceress abilities instead
Focus on a skill you want to interact with and find its synergies, dont look at class until you find what you want to do with skills
I think once all weapons and ability categories released we will have a lot more classes with funny weapons and builds

Most of the time you don't want to spread yourself too thin, so focusing on one or two elemental damage types is a good idea
Especially because fire damage and ignite nodes are on the opposite side of the tree from Monk
Its thematically working against it (even though you could do it if you wanted to)
the main thing though is beside the poison skills, it feels like when I look at a specific bow skill and think of how to synergize it with witch skills then it seems like "oh it doesn't do anything significantly more than the <element> equilavent in a more friendly dip tree", not sure if this is because going from magic user => weapon user is harder than vice-versa

does profane ritual not work with sacrifice? i've got sacrifice on, and i can summon zombies straight from the skeletons, but profane ritual won't work on the skeles. when I think about it this is probably on purpose but i figured i should ask - is this a bug or a feature?
Chaos / Freeze can work but you have to focus on the applicators to see if that concept is viable (it is through Chaotic Freeze support and Contagion, bread crumb)
But also, messy if you don't splurge on tabs. Fills up quick

yea I saw that, it just was a tier 3 gem so it was far off for me. I was trying to use barrage + escape shot for high freeze rate + movement utility but it was cubersome and cutting into APM too much for it to be worth it compared to frostbolt plus ended up trying to use cold snap to gain usage out of the freeze which was spreading the build too thin
No, penetration determines how much of a hit goes through resistances, which is separate from the calculation for chance to shock, you want more raw dmg if that makes sense

You sound split between spells and attacks, I'd focus on one or the other since your freeze buildup is reliant on the actual amt of cold damage you deal

It's abt the same complexity as learning D&D, it just takes time, dw. A lot of the things are in the weeds and you dont need to worry so much

Yes, poison magnitude (the thing that determines the poison dps) can only come from physical or chaos damage hits

That being said, the poison dps itself after the hit is scaled by chaos damage, so it's more effective to scale via chaos damage hits, but there aren't very many sources of that for attack builds since weapon bases are mostly physical, so attack poison builds generally focus on physical hits

Theory-crafting a bleed-bow build and struggling to decide between ranger and Merc-Witch hunter.
I am definitely going to grab Spiral Volley for mapping as soon as I am able to, but I am super curious about the performance of Barrage, for single target, compared to casting Snipe multiple times.
Is the movement speed penalty from attacking considered slow? Can you move at normal speed while casting if you take Relentless Pursuit as Pathfinder?
Barrage is a buff in this game, you empower the next bow attack you cast with an additional arrow plus an additional arrow per frenzy charge
In PoE1 you didnt move at all so in my eyes it's fast 
But yes that node seems nice in general

It works as an empowered attack buff, similar to the empowered slam buffs from PoE1 if you come from that game

No spirit required, just a cast time and then you get the buff for a duration to use the additional arrow and consumes frenzy charges if you have them
I am 100% stacking topend and chance to apply bleed with ailment mods here.

Witch hunter gives you exploding corpses and a super strong cull, so with Spiral Volley you clear entire maps in a cast or two depending on how many frenzy charges you can generate

Depends on the utility you want on the base type, some base types have faster attack time and lower flat damage and some have the opposite while some have alternative utility like chance to chain or have an additional arrow
Im trying to respecc from infernalist arsonist to demon form build and it costs so much gold 💀
At the end of the day you want the most throughput damage and if you're looking at bleed you'd want all phys damage, but the base type matters for what youre trying to do specifically
Chance to chain (warden bow) is very nice for spiral volley from my experience rn
whereas additional arrow (dualstring bow) isnt as impactful for spiral volley

Definitely does, I'd likely have weaponslot 1 for Spiral Volley and weaponslot2 for bossing with sniper barrage.
I definitely think the chance to chain is a must have for Spiral volley, and additional arrow is insaaaane for sniper barrage.

Follow up question here, regarding the generation of Frenzy charges, the aura states, on hit, does this apply to, for instance, poison arrow's gas cloud damage ticks as well?

Trying to see which early ability I could lean on for generating charges before consuming them all with Spiral Volley, I saw JayTX running Pin Down on auto attacks with a very high chance of pinning enemies and guaranteed charges from doing so, the utility of cc + guaranteed charges seems really strong, but wouldnt there be a better medium to transfer this than auto shots, like the poison or electric arrows instead? - Maybe they dont apply the effects at all

If you're referring to Combat Frenzy, it's only Freeze, Electrocute, or Pin that need to be triggered to proc the frenzy charge generation.
Cold damage inherently has freeze buildup (can be increased by modifiers), and lightning damage inherently has electrocution buildup (also increased by modifiers), but physical damage does not have an inherent buildup to Pin, so if you want to effectively generate charges with Physical damage only I'd recommend using the Bushwhack unique boots which allows your physical damage to inherently generate Pin buildup.
how good is the decimating strike node on witch hunter? Only works on full life sounds kinda bad especially for rares and uniques?

From my exerience the issue is moreso that spiral volley shouldnt use all your frenzy charges on cast, it'd be much smoother if it only used one at a time lol
Yeah, the dependancy on the 33% chance to not use charges is too great
35%, but yeah it's a 130% cost multiplier support that doesnt add any damage

but in general my build is surprisingly decent aside from the frenzy interactions being hit or miss

For bossing its okay that barrage uses all our charges because thats extra arrows and more hits, and with Mark being more viable to use in single target its fine especially since snipe provides guaranteed crits, - although I assume that the Mark will get consumed on the initial hit and provide no bonus for the rest, but the multiple hits dealing physical damage might allow further generation of charges with pin mechanics, especially if you apply the pin support gems to something like rain of arrows and use that without/between frenzy charge generation - to generate more. - if thats how it can work.
Check out the support for increased chance to pin based on distance from enemy, its been hella effective for JayTX
For the Mark portion - yes, correct. once its consumed from an instance of critical hit its gone until you re-apply the mark
For the pin generation - there is an internal cooldown on Combat Frenzy so it only generates once every time that cooldown is up
can someone help me to understand why shield charge is NOT working?
I've bypassed that by using Bushwhack, might explore options in the future to use better boots but this works for now
The internal cooldown is a base of 6s iirc

Especially for a bleed build, where you just want to apply top end bleeds - and crits defeat the purpose of bleeding at all almost, and get guaranteed crits from your boss toolkit already
Support gems are always high priority on the skills you want to use for damage, so just taking a utility support to enable an effect that can be enabled in other means is generally not optimal
There are inherent caps on available slots for sure, and costing them toward something you can sacrifice something like crit chance for, is definitely a bad trade...
Everything is contextual on the skill and effect in question, but this one in particular is easily solved with boots that you can get 30% MS or two sockets with a good corruption anyways so whatever

No but pen isn't ever bad, it will help with the occasional rare mob with high resists or map mods. So up to you on how to optimize

Acolyte is currently far inferior to Invoker iirc. Mainly because of the impracticality of darkness vs spirit limit with available buffs, you sacrifice a lot of survivability to have to run around and pick up orbs every 5 seconds to be able to gain more damage, its just impractical

I'm allocating point to my passive skill tree without guides, is the game forgiving when it comes to going blind and exploring the choices you have? you can respec them any time, it costs gold and the higher lvl you are the more it will cost. Right now its kinda high late game but not impossible, with the new patch they are making it somewhat cheaper aswell so yh you could wing it and respec later

How to know what is local and what is global ?
As per MarkGGG:
A local mod affects that property of the item, as opposed to a global one which affects it for your character. Thus a local mod can only occur on an item with that property, and conversely, global mods will not occur on such items.
So, purely for example, "% increased physical damage" on a ring, can't be local, because rings don't have base physical damage. "% increased physical damage" on a weapon is local, and affects the value of the weapon, rather than you. You'll see that the damage values on such a weapon are blue, rather than white, to show they've been modified by local mods.
The global version of a mod will (almost) never spawn as a random on something that it could be local on. You can get global crit mods on weapons, where they could have been local, but only as implicit mods (daggers give global crit chance, and thrusting swords give global crit multiplier). In those cases, to prevent any confusion, the global mod is specifically labelled "Global" so you can see it isn't local.
So, if you see an "% increased armour" mod on a helm, that's local, not global, and the armour value of the helm will be in blue to show that that's a modified value. If you see "% increased armour" on a ring, that's global.

i'm currently supercharging dark effigy, and right now spam vine arrow when I go on the defensive, I have envenom on that skill, so currently it can help proc 2 attacks per sec from dark effigy (one from chaos over time and one from the poison). Hey guys, I'm making my own "monk" build which has been working great so far. I've got a lot of health on kill, critchance/damage and attack power. And all my attributes are on STR. I'm using a 2h mace with pretty much just mace skills and killing palm + contagion. And my spirit ability is Herald of ash. Basically, I prime them for stun, then I stun them and they all explode and die. So far, super strong, super fun, life's good.
Now comes the time to pick an ascendancy and I don't know which one to pick. The dark one would seem the best but it disables spirit, and as it stands my build essentially revolves around herald of ash overkill explosion and the fact that with a 2h mace roided on damage and crit it clears the whole map after I kill 1 guy. The elemental one seems to revolve around elemental damage (duh) which I deal none, and I'm all in on STR so I don't have the IQ to grab the better elemental spells. What do you guys recomend?

Hard one. Chayula has some decent nodes that may work. Into the Breach which gives you life, mana, and gain bonus chaos damage on top of your damage, the node after doubles these benefits. There's a "Gain X% of damage as chaos damage" node so you get a chunk of chaos damage added. There's also a chaos resist node that will double your chaos resist.
I'm unfamiliar with invoker, but I believe that's very lightning/cold oriented?

Because Lightning Rod converts phys to lightning. Heft increases maximum phys hit of any physical attack. So your base is 100, heft makes the ceiling 130 (As every attack randomly deals damage within a range of values)

noone really knows right now , but it isnt really a hard question since pen doesn't go below 0 and %s are not ginormous.
If your build does not use exposure or curses, then pen will always be valuable. as pen on tree is only around 30% in general anyway.
If your build uses exposure and or curses, you generally have a large amount of negative res. almost 50% . So pen does not have value as its likely most mobs are going to be at 0 or negative res

i don't know. this is easily testable by putting a skill and thne putting a More duration gem in there and checking the arrow to see if the skills duration went up.
my answer would be most likely yes it applies to the skill inside, as thats how it works with things like Withered support and more duration.
It's because you have a range of damage before conversion, and heft is applied to that range passively. When the skill does damage, it rolls the phys damage then applies the conversion. At least that's my understanding. The flow is usually:
Base Damage Range > Heft Increased Damage Range > Roll Phys damage > Conversion
Since you need the damage range first for any of the rest of the calculations, basically.

You'd need to look at monster variety then average out all of their resistances to find a sweet spot. How you would do that is beyond me.
It's a hard question to answer really. Penetration can't make resistance go below 0, HOWEVER we do know that capped resistance is 75%. So really if you wanted to cover all cases then 75% is your go to. If you want to generalise without the above effort, go with... 37%? Nice middle ground

I'd have said either would work? They'd both scale the damage, the only caveat is the difference between Spell and Attack scaling nodes
With this passive, if my spell penetrates 20% cold res and lets say enemy has base 50% cold res, does that mean that enemy will get hit as if it had 0% cold res or -20%
Unless there's a component to the damage scaling for the Bow Lightning stuff, you can do either. I'd probably do both, just be careful as Bow is Attack and not Spell. Also consider that a fair few of the skills convert phys to lightning, so get decent phys on your bow

For sure. The passive applies only if the target is Frozen. So penetration will help you freeze the target (As Freeze Buildup is determined by the cold damage you deal. More cold damage, more freeze buildup). Once they're frozen penetration is no use. It atleast gets you there faster.

Hmmm, How the dots get updated dynamically would be valuable information for clever use of game mechanics... especially for PoE due to how ailments scale with highest of x magnitude hits applying x number of ailments. Theres a win/loss between increasing tick rates at the cost of less ticks, unless you can somehow make use of the interaction for the dynamic updates on the dots and use it to your advantage.

Would the swap circumvent both modifiers or only one of them, for instance, if the weapon is not capable of using the skill that applied the debuff, would it update at all, would you gain no effect from swapping or partial effect, like, %dmg is a common one to get dynamically updated to avoid exploitation, but other mechanics in the way ailments calculate damage might not be as fullproof :>
If you mean srs, you have to invest in minions for them to be rly usefull, but it you have the spirit you can just use them for fun and maybe catch a few hits

Hi guys. I wonder if anyone here plays warrior. I'm about lv 81, full 75 resistance. I'm about 2100 health and 7500 armor. When I go to tier 9,10 maps, monsters hit me very hard. If I don't play carefully, I only need to get hit 4,5 times by ranged monsters or rare monsters hitting me twice and I will die immediately. I've tried to upgrade notes like leech, life regen but I still can't get stronger. Is it because my total health and armor are still too low?

You need to deal with both elemental and physical hits

So wagering from this, item wise, if u decently stack armour on all itmes, I'm wagering the most you can get from items before any passives or whatever, is 3000.
And the most u can prob stack armour to is 10k with passives.
So the most something can hit with a physical attack must be capping at like 2k, if not, well, tanking physical attacks is fucked.

if it says "rate" then it refers to the time if takes for life to regenerate from life regeneration, not the actual life that is being regenerated

Ahh, my initial understanding was that if I picked up a 0.5% life recovered per second, then that would effectively increase it to 0.55%
hence why i said if the node truly says "rate" then it refers to the speed of the regen. i alsways double and triplecheck those , because i also fall into that trap :D

When you see speed of the regen, what does that actually mean? Like how long it takes to starts regenerating. Unlike energy shield life doesn't recover automatically without affixes from gear or passive skill points

i was just looking at the tree myself - yes. so usually life is regenerated per second, and my estimated best guess (based on how this works on Energy Shield), means that the amount regens faster than 1 sec.
Hmm those three nodes add up to quite a lot than, might be worth getting after all in the future. And when I get hulking form, that 30% would become 45%
I only just hit Act 3, so still pretty early. My build is hilariously bad but it's all about that class fantasy. Mace/shield with a lot of survivalibilty. Killing slowly but surely 😂

Do you use demon form? currently demon form unequips your sceptre so you lose minions. If you're trying to stay in demon form as long as possible then no it isn't good

It doesn't have an impact on the unique effect but will on the things like energy shield . I'm pretty new to the game myself too, I think there are some rules with what item level unique items drop that someone else can answer.
If you hold Alt (on pc), you can see the tier the modifiers drop as (T1, T2 etc). The unique effects should be labelled as unscaled so for example the 50% revive rate shouldn't be any faster if you picked up the item at the peak of engame
using this on merc with cull+decimating strike and herald of thunder and it's literally onetapping whites
