No, conversion only cares about the end result, so if you convert 80% of your damage to cold, %cold % attack %elemental damage are all better than %physical damage.

The stats from your weapon ofc still want %phys +phys etc since that's the start of the calculation before the conversion

Hmm... Kinda, so long as they affect the weapon, because that's the base number that it rolls before doing any conversion or additions. Say you're using ice strike since that's a common example if you have 10% increased physical damage it would only scale the 20% non-converted, so effectively a 2% increased damage node whereas cold damage/elemental damage would be an 8% increase for the same 10%. Attack would be the full 10% since it doesn't care about conversion, just that it's an attack.

Do you have 75% light/fire/cold res? 50%+ chaos res (ideally 75, but can be hard to get)? 2k+life? Assuming you are evasion based, 65+% evasion? Those are defensive goals you should be trying for.

If you don't have those, you have to either trade for upgrades or just farm very carefully until you get some upgrades

It gives you 20%, but you also get -60% by the time you get through the campaign. Without ANY bonuses to resistances, fire/light/cold would all be -40%

Resistance is the first thing you should be trying to take care of. If you are not solo self found, you can often buy a bunch of nice rares that will let you cap your res with only a few exalts
